Science Unit Test Forces and Motion
Lessons 1-17- Tentative Date
Language Arts
In Writing Workshop, students will write an opinion piece in which they
state a point of view and then argue their position with supporting reasons and
information. Students will use an organizational structure in which relevant
supporting ideas are logically grouped to support the writer’s purpose. Students
will introduce the idea, state their opinion, and elaborate by providing logically
ordered reasons that are supported by facts and details. In addition, they will
revise, edit and share their persuasive essays.
Students continue to explore root words in Word Study.
Math
In math, in order to prepare for upcoming tests, we are going to learn about
decimals and percentages using chapter 10 (no test). We will then be starting
chapter 12 (Angles). In chapter 12 we will be learning about angles on a line,
point, and vertical angles. We will only be reviewing this chapter since it’s not
in our common core. (No Test for Ch. 12)
Once we are done reviewing chapter 12 we will be studying chapter 13
(properties of triangles and four-sided figures). We will be classifying
triangles, understand the measures of angles of a triangle, learn about a right,
Isosceles, and equilateral triangle, have an understanding with inequalities of
triangles, and understand and apply parallelogram, rhombus, and trapezoids.
The tentative test date for Ch. 13 (Thursday, May 7th)
SOCIAL STUDIES
In Social Studies we are going to be reviewing Government for the
M-Step test. Then, we are going to be learning about the struggles the
American colonists had to gain independence from Britain. We will be
learning how the British government sought to gain greater control over
the colonies, how the colonists responded to British control, and how the
resulting tensions between Britain and the 13 colonies exploded into
revolution and war. Students will be creating a game. Information will be
given at a later date.
Science
Students continue their investigation of forces and motion. In Lesson 14, they will
demonstrate the use of magnetism as a non-contact force that changes motion. They will
research the Maglev train, and write how the motion of the Maglev is due to a non-contact
force. In addition, students will explore how electricity can make objects move in Lesson 15.
In Lesson 16, students will apply their understanding of linear motion to the concept of
non-linear motion. In this activity, they will apply what they know about forces and motion by
designing a top. Students will present their top to the class. Their presentation will include
the top’s design, testing process, data, and related scientific principles.
As we conclude our unit, your child will be working in a team to build a model of a roller
coaster. In their investigation students will design, demonstrate, and explain the different
forces involved in the motion of the marble up and down the track of the roller coaster.
A study guide will go home around April 17th
to help students prepare for a final
assessment over this unit. The study guide is due completed prior to the test (date to
be determined). The unit test is tentatively scheduled for Friday, May 1st.
Reading
In Reading Workshop, students will be reviewing and
exploring different types of figurative language to determine
the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in text.
In addition, students will explore poetry. They will
visualize to create mental images as they hear a poem.
Students will build awareness of inferences as they read and
hear a poem.
