The project involves stretching the line from Tai Wai to Hung Hom and Hung Hom to Admiralty sections, linking a number of existing railway lines passing through several districts in Hong Kong. The consultancy agreement involves construction of a 1.8km twin railway tunnels, a new underground station with interchange facilities, as well as ventilation buildings and shafts in Wan Chai of the Hong Kong Island – one of the most built-up and busiest commercial areas in the territory. Hammersmith Flyover Strengthening| London, England Agency | Location | Ramboll / Parsons Brinckerhoff This is a project for post tensioning strengthening and bearing replacement for the Hammersmith Flyover. The Hammersmith Flyover is a 622m long example of an early pre-cast post-tensioned bridge. Constructed between 1959 and 1961, it was one of the first major precast segmental bridges. The flyover is a prominent elevated roadway constructed of segmental pre-cast concrete cantilever sections and is supported by 15 central piers. It also features what is described as an “external post tensioned system”, however the system is concealed within grouted ducts for a significant part of its length. Investigative surveys as part of a Transport for London (TfL) asset review identified that the Post Tensioning system was deteriorating and intervention was required. This is the result of a bridge that is exceptional from end to end, focused in relationship to the multiplicity of experiences along its length and the twin communities at each end. The viaduct replacement is managed by the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering. Update revisions and field questions in real time provided clear direction during construction. 3D views allowed the design team to communicate with the client and contractor in a more concise and efficient manner. This project will serve a key focal point for the revitalization of the North Lamar corridor. Within the approximate 18 acre site, there is an approximate grade change of 80 feet. Additionally, there were over 1,300 trees of various species with diameters greater than eight inches. The owner desired a site that would integrate into the natural terrain and preserve as many of the trees as possible. This required close coordination between the civil engineer and architect to strategically locate walls and discuss building access locations. Gatwick Airport –North Terminal | United Kingdom Atkins Global The Gatwick North Terminal Redevelopment Programme is best regarded as a series of enabling works projects in the land side area of the terminal in order to facilitate the ultimate objective of reconfiguring and increasing the size of the North Terminal airside World Duty Free. The project involves the refurbishment of all three levels of the existing terminal; Arrivals, Check-In and Security and includes the following: • Provision of retail/food and beverage concessions, • New vertical circulation core, • New bag drop and baggage handling, • Deliver new, modern security facilities, • Provide new/upgraded MEP services. - 9. Due to thepriority access of sea transport over rail and road, the current bridge over the Caland canal has to open several times per day, sometimes at a moment's notice. When the bridge is open, the route from the Maasvlakte into Europe is not available for freight trains, creating a capacity reduction and at times delays in the railway network. Separating freight transport and sea transport by means of an alternative route solves this in a future-proof manner. Research has shown that the new route called the Theemswegtracé is an effective alternative. Realising the Theemswegtracé on the freight corridor allows for further growth of freight transport in the European Union. It has a positive impact on three of the nine TEN-T corridors, specifically the Rhine - Alpine, North Sea - Mediterranean and North Sea - Baltic. This demonstrates the European relevance of the project. With BIM improved the overall project performance with greater accuracy, more visual and high-performance in design work, and improved error checking. Fanli Bridge |Yixing, Jiangsu Province, China Agency | Location | Tongji Architectural Design & Research Institute Fanli Bridge, located in Yixing of Jiangsu Province, China, crosses Dongjiu River and part of Fanli Avenue. It is a cable-stayed bridge with three lantern-shaped towers. The total length of the main bridge is 500 meters which combines two 168m long mid-spans and two 82m long side spans, 39m in width with 6 dual vehicle lanes. It is located west of la Defense ring (business district of Paris). The existing railway brownfield is tucked between an express road at the exit of the ring of la Defense and the Groues district which is under a renewal project including the site of the station. The first MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) Project in Indonesia, and also the first underground transportation in Indonesia. CECI uses BIM to develop design alternatives of entrances, ventilation shafts and cooling towers. The results can be visualized in 3D. 3D SEM/CSD drawings have been delivered to optimize the efficiency of interface integration for sleeves and opening at slabs, which have minimized errors and duplicate effort. It will run from Dingpu Station on the Tucheng line along Zhongyang Road to Sanxia then cross National Freeway No. 3 to Yingge. The total length is 15 KM, and there are 12 MRT STATIONS. The 4C Concept (Collaboration, Coordination, Communication, and Connection) has been implemented in this project. Strong coordination and communication between different stakeholders enable the information to be shared smoothly. The works have been executed in a more harmonious way which helps to expedite the design acceptance. In order to optimize the benefit of BIM application to the Client, the models are connected within design and the parametric elements to create a robust database, so that project progress, time schedule, and detail drawing can be checked easily. Using Autodesk software and a model-based design approach, Soethe Cursino team developed a more cost- effective, functional design enabling heavy trucks and other vehicles to safely exit and enter the highway. Design software, Soethe Cursino successfully minimized the earthworks required for the project to lower the cost while preserving the local environment, and developed a site plan that will allow extensive landscaping and re-vegetation around the interchange and access roads. This project will serve a key focal point for the revitalization of the North Lamar corridor. Within the approximate 18 acre site, there is an approximate grade change of 80 feet. Additionally, there were over 1,300 trees of various species with diameters greater than eight inches. The owner desired a site that would integrate into the natural terrain and preserve as many of the trees as possible. This required close coordination between the civil engineer and architect to strategically locate walls and discuss building access locations. In 2014 76 women and 100 children were housed for a total of 9,583 bed nights. The current shelters are at capacity and a future expansion is needed. This simulation was created to help fund-raise for the future expansion. Obayashi used ICT to promote rapid consensus-building between the government and local residents, in an effort to not only reduce the time needed to achieve consensus but also to promote understanding of the project content. It is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), and Special Protection Area for bird assemblages, intertidal and sand dune habitats. Native vegetation such as willows, rabbit brush, currants and native grasses will be planted along the new shoreline. Idaho Power has begun removing invasive noxious weeds currently abundant on the islands. The project will require an estimated 63,900 cubic yards of material to be added to the islands. About half of that would come from the dredging operations. Contractors performed core sampling to determine more precisely the type and volume of material available from the riverbed. The remaining material will be hauled in; we anticipate finding local sources for that material. Sea Coast ProtectionScheme | United Kingdom Agency | Location | Mott MacDonald The Scheme is a 5km long coast protection scheme to protect over 3000 residential and commercial properties from coastal erosion over the next 100 years. The Scheme will also provide regeneration opportunities to the area. The £36 million Scheme comprises 23 fishtail rock groynes and approximately 950,000 cubic metres of sand and shingle beach recharge. Mott MacDonald utilised BIM throughout the Project Appraisal Report to obtain funding from the Environment Agency, through to detailed design, to construction. The BIM portal/models will be incorporated into the Client system for asset management of the scheme. Tendring District Council is able to regenerate the local area, provide long term protection to the community behind the defences and as an additional consequence enhanced the amenity provided by the beach. The project reused 20,000 tonne of existing material on site within the structures. Also, the council salvaged a large volume of timber from the site to be reused in other coast protection projects. - 50. Ranney Station Improvements| Carneys Point, New Jersey Agency | Location | Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) Ranney Station is a 2.2 MGD Drinking Water Treatment Facility. HMM teamed with Bowen Engineering as the General Contractor to pursue the Design-Build for treatment of a non-regulated containment in groundwater.. The RFP included a design concept developed by New Jersey American Water. In order to be responsive to the RFP, a construction cost estimate was required to be submitted as part of the RFP response. A 30% model of the planned facility was crated and schedules within the model were used to calculate pipe velocities and confirm pipe sizing during the initial concept development. This and quantity take offs from the model were provided to Bowen Engineering to develop the construction costs. Both 30% design models, and renderings were completed within the 5 week RFP process without the need for a time extension. This would not have been possible in a standard CAD deliverable workflow. For this substation, they would be working with steep terrain and unique zoning challenges. - 52. 500kV Transmission Project| Oregon Agency | Location | Idaho Power The Boardman to Hemingway Transmission Line Project (B2H Project) is important to the Northwest and Intermountain West regions. Transmission paths are key to exchanging electricity between these regions, depending on which area is experiencing the highest demand. Along Bombing Range Road the Navy had requested visual graphics that would demonstrate that the proposed transmission structures would not impact the existing Navy flight easements. With 3D visualization, the team demonstrated the proposed line at the flight speed and altitude of the planes and simulated tree growth on the farm plots. This helped all stakeholders understand the simulations much easier than if only provided this information in permitting reports. - #3 SOFTWARE: Autodesk Revit – Architecture, Structure & MEP Autodesk Navisworks Manage & Freedom Autodesk InfraWorks Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D Autodesk 3ds Max Design Autodesk BIM 360 Glue Autodesk 360 Rendering Project: Shatin to Central Link Firm: Arup Location: Hong Kong Hong Kong’s MTR (Mass Transit Railway) includes more than 210 km of rail lines and serves more than 4.5 million riders each day. The new Shatin to Central Link (SCL) will expand the heavily used system by 17 km through several districts of Hong Kong, including the Wan Chai, one of the city’s busiest commercial areas. Featuring a 1.8 km twin tunnel, the project challenged the design and construction team by limiting potential work areas due to the line’s proximity to heavily trafficked areas and existing and abandoned foundations. With Arup leading the project design, the team recognized early in the project that a detailed understanding of the affected areas, as well as meticulous coordination, would be essential. The team decided to adopt model-based workflows throughout the project. Intelligent models enabled the team to ensure more accurate calculations, labeling, and drawing sheet production. Just as crucially, the intelligent objects within the design made it easier for the team to revise the design quickly and more easily assess the impact of changes on the project as a whole. The extended project team shared project data and multidiscipline models on a regular basis. They also turned to their model for design reviews, analysis, and construction planning and simulation. A whole-project view helped the team to account for construction challenges and limited work areas as they designed the project. Model-based coordination provided a rapid way to identify and address interferences well in advance of construction. As they worked, the design team was able to plan and review space arrangements for construction and systems needed to support the rail line. Using construction simulation, the team created timelines that accounted for everything from site logistics to temporary traffic management plans. The result is helping to optimize traffic management during construction. Arup has found the visualizations enabled by a model-based workflow helpful for communication beyond the design team. By sharing 3D models with the client and other stakeholders—including government approval bodies, the district council, and adjacent building owners—the team has furthered a clear understanding of the project, and has highlighted its efforts to minimize disruptions. Communication materials included visualizations that incorporated realistic materials and animations of traffic movement, enabling stakeholders to quickly and easily grasp the design context. Many of the advantages of model-based processes are translating into time and cost benefits. Models accelerated the approval process, reducing associated costs. Construction and site simulation helped the team minimize potentially expensive and time-consuming project risks. Using a model to plan required diversions of underground utilities allowed the team to find opportunities to minimize diversion costs while also reducing the impact of the project on nearby utility users. With construction under way, the proactive planning is also delivering qualitative benefits to the people of Hong Kong in the form of minimized inconvenience from a major construction project.
- #4 SOFTWARE: ReCap AutoCAD Inventor Civil 3d Navisworks Project: Hammersmith Flyover Strengthening Firm: Ramboll Parsons Brinkerhoff Joint Venture Location: London, England Constructed between 1959 and 1961, the Hammersmith Flyover is a 622-meter-long pre-cast, post-tensioned bridge supported by 15 central piers. Transport for London, the organization responsible for London’s roadways, realized that the post-tensioning system was deteriorating, and it executed an emergency repair in 2012. The organization also engaged the firms of Ramboll and Parsons Brinkerhoff in a joint venture to develop a new post-tensioning system for the structure, with keeping the bridge open during construction a key requirement. With little space for the installation of a new post-tensioning system, the design team sought a way to accurately account for the details of the existing structure, and to precisely design a solution. They decided to turn to a model-based design process, and to use Autodesk® Inventor® as a core design tool. Traditionally associated with product design, Inventor provided a model-based environment that helped the team simulate and analyze the design as they worked. Starting from an initial as-built model, the team explored a number of conceptual post-tensioning options. The team determined that positioning cables to achieve maximum eccentricity provided an efficient solution. During the conceptual design process, the team found that Inventor excelled at setting out complex cable deviator curves. To enhance the accuracy of the as-built model of the existing bridge, the team carried out laser surveys and processed the data using Autodesk® ReCap™. They created 3D models of existing elements not captured by the survey. As the project progressed, the team refined the design and began collaborating with the general contractor, Costain, and a specialty post-tensioning subcontractor, Freyssinet. They used the 3D models as a basis for discussions, and enhanced the models with input from the construction team. By continuously checking for interferences throughout the design process, they were able to address clashes between cable runs and against existing concrete to find a best-fit solution before construction. With construction currently underway, a model-based approach has helped to improve project delivery at the worksite. The team modeled the temporary works needed to carry out the project in order to minimize disruption to traffic flow during construction. The model also helped the team to select tools and equipment for use in construction.
- #5 SOFTWARE: Revit Dynamo Studio AutoCAD 3D Studio Max Project: Sixth Street Viaduct Firm: HNTB Location: Los Angeles, California Spanning the Los Angeles River, the Sixth Street Viaduct is one of America’s most iconic bridges, having appeared in more than two dozen films. A chemical reaction taking place in the cement used to construct the bridge makes it vulnerable to earthquakes, and it must be replaced. The City of Los Angeles decided the much-loved structured needed a worthy—and equally striking—replacement. The new bridge, designed by architect Michael Maltzan, will feature multiple arches and a distinctive lighting system that maximizes light coverage and minimizes glare and shadows. The city tapped HNTB to provide the engineering services required to realize Maltzan’s vision. The Six Street Viaduct will be the first bridge in California to rely on continuous tied network arches as a structural system. Each arch will be supported by columns set on their own isolation bearings, which will greatly enhance seismic stability. HNTB realized that the complexity of the bridge would require sophisticated analysis and simulation along with accurate visualization. Given the demands of the project, the design team chose to employ a model-based workflow and a Building Information Modeling (BIM) process from the earliest stages of the project. With the initial models developed in Autodesk Revit®, the team decided to enhance its ability to model the geometry of the bridge with Autodesk® Dynamo Studio. Dynamo helped the team control and understand the parameters of the bridge. Throughout the process, the team was able to analyze the complex forms and unique shapes called for in the design for structural loads, wind loads, drainage, and more. A model-based process also helped the team to enhance the sustainability of the project, with a design than prevents viaduct deck drainage from entering the river. The 3D models generated by the BIM process aided in design reviews and structural coordination. They also proved valuable in client presentations, making it easier for the client to visualize project progress and provide input. The final renderings of the project were displayed at the groundbreaking for the bridge and provided to the media, giving the public a view of the new bridge in advance. Beyond design efficiency, using a model-based process is delivering tangible dividends on the project in the form of time and cost savings. Coordinating the project with models helped to reduce interferences before construction, and having models to refer to during construction is reducing the number of questions generated in the field. With better advance coordination, the project is experiencing a reduced risk of time-consuming and costly issues during construction.

Infrastructure Design Suite (Premium) Project: Walnut Park Apartments Firm: CivilE Location: Austin, Texas Named by Forbes as one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, Austin, Texas, faces a housing shortage. The Walnut Creek Apartments will help ease the pinch. Providing 277 new housing units, the Walnut Creek Apartments will be situated over an 18-acre site in the North Lamar corridor of the city. With many sustainability elements in the structures, the new complex is also environmentally friendly in its site design, which preserves many of the 1,300 trees at the location. The design also includes a path to connect pedestrians and cyclists to nearby commercial and retail developments. The owner engaged CivilE to provide civil engineering and site visualization services for the development. To meet sustainable design requirements while accounting for the 80-foot grade change over the site, the CivilE team needed to collaborate closely with the architects. The entire team embraced Building Information Modeling (BIM) and a model-based process to help them design, coordinate, and collaborate over the course of the project. CivilE relied on Autodesk® Infrastructure Design Suite Premium for design, and Autodesk® InfraWorks® 360 along with Autodesk® 3ds Max® Design for visualization. The architects turned to Autodesk® Revit® as their core design tool. These tools enabled a model-based workflow throughout the project. As team members from one discipline revised their portion of the design, other disciplines analyzed and accounted for the changes in their portion of the model. For instance, the architects incorporated the civil design into their Revit model to ensure the building design integrated with the site. The model-based approach has delivered numerous benefits for the project. Early on, zoning concerns necessitated a complete redesign of the civil plans. A team of two took advantage of the intelligent objects within the initial design to revise the plans and create new renderings in only two months. Using a model-based approach also helped the firm explore more strategies for preserving the forested character of the site. As a result, the team was able to develop a design that keeps in-situ vegetation while minimizing the need for irrigation. The team brought together all project models within InfraWorks 360 regularly. This provided a whole-project view that the owner and design team could view. The team is even sharing views out of individual units with the owner, giving the owner the opportunity to suggest view-enhancing modifications early in the project. These 3D visualizations will be used to assist in securing project approval from the City Council and Zoning and Planning. When the project nears completion, the owner plans to use the project visualizations to assist in leasing activities.

Location: Mumbai, India Upon completion, the 1.3 million-square-foot Godrej BKC will be one of Mumbai’s most desirable business addresses. The design features 19 floors of modern office space. SOM, the project architect, designed the space to meet the needs of businesses now and into the future. Developed by Godrej BKC in partnership with Jet Airways, the building’s owner is the Godrej Group. The building will serve as the corporate headquarters of Jet Airways, India’s second-largest airline. Godrej BKC’s all-glass façade will provide natural daylight and views of the booming city of Mumbai. With high-performance glass and other energy-saving features, the building is designed to reduce heat and radiation. The building has been pre-certified LEED Platinum. The team decided to adopt a model-based workflow, and engaged Dawn Digital to provide visualization and simulation services. Visualizations created by Dawn Digital brought to life the details of the building and surrounding areas, and helped the team better understand the design. To capture the experience of the building post-completion, Dawn Digital developed a futuristic, near-photorealistic model of the project. It features detailed views of the exterior that highlight the striking façade. Rendered to include exact textures and other minute details, the 3D model can be rotated in any direction. - #13 SOFTWARE: ReCap AutoCAD Inventor Civil 3d Navisworks Project: Hammersmith Flyover Strengthening Firm: Ramboll Parsons Brinkerhoff Joint Venture Location: London, England Constructed between 1959 and 1961, the Hammersmith Flyover is a 622-meter-long pre-cast, post-tensioned bridge supported by 15 central piers. Transport for London, the organization responsible for London’s roadways, realized that the post-tensioning system was deteriorating, and it executed an emergency repair in 2012. The organization also engaged the firms of Ramboll and Parsons Brinkerhoff in a joint venture to develop a new post-tensioning system for the structure, with keeping the bridge open during construction a key requirement. With little space for the installation of a new post-tensioning system, the design team sought a way to accurately account for the details of the existing structure, and to precisely design a solution. They decided to turn to a model-based design process, and to use Autodesk® Inventor® as a core design tool. Traditionally associated with product design, Inventor provided a model-based environment that helped the team simulate and analyze the design as they worked. Starting from an initial as-built model, the team explored a number of conceptual post-tensioning options. The team determined that positioning cables to achieve maximum eccentricity provided an efficient solution. During the conceptual design process, the team found that Inventor excelled at setting out complex cable deviator curves. To enhance the accuracy of the as-built model of the existing bridge, the team carried out laser surveys and processed the data using Autodesk® ReCap™. They created 3D models of existing elements not captured by the survey. As the project progressed, the team refined the design and began collaborating with the general contractor, Costain, and a specialty post-tensioning subcontractor, Freyssinet. They used the 3D models as a basis for discussions, and enhanced the models with input from the construction team. By continuously checking for interferences throughout the design process, they were able to address clashes between cable runs and against existing concrete to find a best-fit solution before construction. With construction currently underway, a model-based approach has helped to improve project delivery at the worksite. The team modeled the temporary works needed to carry out the project in order to minimize disruption to traffic flow during construction. The model also helped the team to select tools and equipment for use in construction.
- #14 SOFTWARE: Revit Dynamo Studio AutoCAD 3D Studio Max Project: Sixth Street Viaduct Firm: HNTB Location: Los Angeles, California Spanning the Los Angeles River, the Sixth Street Viaduct is one of America’s most iconic bridges, having appeared in more than two dozen films. A chemical reaction taking place in the cement used to construct the bridge makes it vulnerable to earthquakes, and it must be replaced. The City of Los Angeles decided the much-loved structured needed a worthy—and equally striking—replacement. The new bridge, designed by architect Michael Maltzan, will feature multiple arches and a distinctive lighting system that maximizes light coverage and minimizes glare and shadows. The city tapped HNTB to provide the engineering services required to realize Maltzan’s vision. The Six Street Viaduct will be the first bridge in California to rely on continuous tied network arches as a structural system. Each arch will be supported by columns set on their own isolation bearings, which will greatly enhance seismic stability. HNTB realized that the complexity of the bridge would require sophisticated analysis and simulation along with accurate visualization. Given the demands of the project, the design team chose to employ a model-based workflow and a Building Information Modeling (BIM) process from the earliest stages of the project. With the initial models developed in Autodesk Revit®, the team decided to enhance its ability to model the geometry of the bridge with Autodesk® Dynamo Studio. Dynamo helped the team control and understand the parameters of the bridge. Throughout the process, the team was able to analyze the complex forms and unique shapes called for in the design for structural loads, wind loads, drainage, and more. A model-based process also helped the team to enhance the sustainability of the project, with a design than prevents viaduct deck drainage from entering the river. The 3D models generated by the BIM process aided in design reviews and structural coordination. They also proved valuable in client presentations, making it easier for the client to visualize project progress and provide input. The final renderings of the project were displayed at the groundbreaking for the bridge and provided to the media, giving the public a view of the new bridge in advance. Beyond design efficiency, using a model-based process is delivering tangible dividends on the project in the form of time and cost savings. Coordinating the project with models helped to reduce interferences before construction, and having models to refer to during construction is reducing the number of questions generated in the field. With better advance coordination, the project is experiencing a reduced risk of time-consuming and costly issues during construction.
- #18 SOFTWARE: Autodesk Revit – Architecture, Structure & MEP Autodesk Navisworks Manage & Freedom Autodesk InfraWorks Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D Autodesk 3ds Max Design Autodesk BIM 360 Glue Autodesk 360 Rendering Project: Shatin to Central Link Firm: Arup Location: Hong Kong Hong Kong’s MTR (Mass Transit Railway) includes more than 210 km of rail lines and serves more than 4.5 million riders each day. The new Shatin to Central Link (SCL) will expand the heavily used system by 17 km through several districts of Hong Kong, including the Wan Chai, one of the city’s busiest commercial areas. Featuring a 1.8 km twin tunnel, the project challenged the design and construction team by limiting potential work areas due to the line’s proximity to heavily trafficked areas and existing and abandoned foundations. With Arup leading the project design, the team recognized early in the project that a detailed understanding of the affected areas, as well as meticulous coordination, would be essential. The team decided to adopt model-based workflows throughout the project. Intelligent models enabled the team to ensure more accurate calculations, labeling, and drawing sheet production. Just as crucially, the intelligent objects within the design made it easier for the team to revise the design quickly and more easily assess the impact of changes on the project as a whole. The extended project team shared project data and multidiscipline models on a regular basis. They also turned to their model for design reviews, analysis, and construction planning and simulation. A whole-project view helped the team to account for construction challenges and limited work areas as they designed the project. Model-based coordination provided a rapid way to identify and address interferences well in advance of construction. As they worked, the design team was able to plan and review space arrangements for construction and systems needed to support the rail line. Using construction simulation, the team created timelines that accounted for everything from site logistics to temporary traffic management plans. The result is helping to optimize traffic management during construction. Arup has found the visualizations enabled by a model-based workflow helpful for communication beyond the design team. By sharing 3D models with the client and other stakeholders—including government approval bodies, the district council, and adjacent building owners—the team has furthered a clear understanding of the project, and has highlighted its efforts to minimize disruptions. Communication materials included visualizations that incorporated realistic materials and animations of traffic movement, enabling stakeholders to quickly and easily grasp the design context. Many of the advantages of model-based processes are translating into time and cost benefits. Models accelerated the approval process, reducing associated costs. Construction and site simulation helped the team minimize potentially expensive and time-consuming project risks. Using a model to plan required diversions of underground utilities allowed the team to find opportunities to minimize diversion costs while also reducing the impact of the project on nearby utility users. With construction under way, the proactive planning is also delivering qualitative benefits to the people of Hong Kong in the form of minimized inconvenience from a major construction project.

Infrastructure Design Suite (Premium) Project: Walnut Park Apartments Firm: CivilE Location: Austin, Texas Named by Forbes as one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, Austin, Texas, faces a housing shortage. The Walnut Creek Apartments will help ease the pinch. Providing 277 new housing units, the Walnut Creek Apartments will be situated over an 18-acre site in the North Lamar corridor of the city. With many sustainability elements in the structures, the new complex is also environmentally friendly in its site design, which preserves many of the 1,300 trees at the location. The design also includes a path to connect pedestrians and cyclists to nearby commercial and retail developments. The owner engaged CivilE to provide civil engineering and site visualization services for the development. To meet sustainable design requirements while accounting for the 80-foot grade change over the site, the CivilE team needed to collaborate closely with the architects. The entire team embraced Building Information Modeling (BIM) and a model-based process to help them design, coordinate, and collaborate over the course of the project. CivilE relied on Autodesk® Infrastructure Design Suite Premium for design, and Autodesk® InfraWorks® 360 along with Autodesk® 3ds Max® Design for visualization. The architects turned to Autodesk® Revit® as their core design tool. These tools enabled a model-based workflow throughout the project. As team members from one discipline revised their portion of the design, other disciplines analyzed and accounted for the changes in their portion of the model. For instance, the architects incorporated the civil design into their Revit model to ensure the building design integrated with the site. The model-based approach has delivered numerous benefits for the project. Early on, zoning concerns necessitated a complete redesign of the civil plans. A team of two took advantage of the intelligent objects within the initial design to revise the plans and create new renderings in only two months. Using a model-based approach also helped the firm explore more strategies for preserving the forested character of the site. As a result, the team was able to develop a design that keeps in-situ vegetation while minimizing the need for irrigation. The team brought together all project models within InfraWorks 360 regularly. This provided a whole-project view that the owner and design team could view. The team is even sharing views out of individual units with the owner, giving the owner the opportunity to suggest view-enhancing modifications early in the project. These 3D visualizations will be used to assist in securing project approval from the City Council and Zoning and Planning. When the project nears completion, the owner plans to use the project visualizations to assist in leasing activities.

Location: Mumbai, India Upon completion, the 1.3 million-square-foot Godrej BKC will be one of Mumbai’s most desirable business addresses. The design features 19 floors of modern office space. SOM, the project architect, designed the space to meet the needs of businesses now and into the future. Developed by Godrej BKC in partnership with Jet Airways, the building’s owner is the Godrej Group. The building will serve as the corporate headquarters of Jet Airways, India’s second-largest airline. Godrej BKC’s all-glass façade will provide natural daylight and views of the booming city of Mumbai. With high-performance glass and other energy-saving features, the building is designed to reduce heat and radiation. The building has been pre-certified LEED Platinum. The team decided to adopt a model-based workflow, and engaged Dawn Digital to provide visualization and simulation services. Visualizations created by Dawn Digital brought to life the details of the building and surrounding areas, and helped the team better understand the design. To capture the experience of the building post-completion, Dawn Digital developed a futuristic, near-photorealistic model of the project. It features detailed views of the exterior that highlight the striking façade. Rendered to include exact textures and other minute details, the 3D model can be rotated in any direction.
