Real-time Statistics with Horizon

Increasingly, our customers are asking for more detailed and up to date information about the cloud infrastructure on which their applications are running. Currently, the information sources available to Horizon are quite limited in the type of information available, the sources of information, and the timeliness with which the information can be made available. In this presentation, we describe recent work we have done in instrumenting our OpenStack deployments with distributed agents that provide real-time information to Horizon. We describe some re-architecture work done to Horizon to enable it to access this information, and show the results of our implementation. This work has enabled our customers to have increased visibility into the real-time state of their clouds, and has been very well received.

Vevo has undergone a complete strategic and technical reboot, driven not only by product, but also by engineering. Since November 2015, Vevo has been replacing monolithic, legacy content services with a modern, modular, microservices architecture, all while developing new features and functionality. In parallel, Vevo has built its data platform from scratch to power internal analytics as well as a unique music video consumption experience through a new personalized feed of recommendations — all in less than one year.
This has been a monumental effort that was made possible in this short time span largely because of AWS technologies. The content team has been heavily using serverless architectures and AWS Lambda in the form of microservices, taking a similar approach to functional programming, which has helped us speed up the development process and time to market. The data team has been building the data platform by heavily leveraging Amazon Kinesis for data exchange across services, Amazon Aurora for consumer-facing services, Apache Spark on Amazon EMR for ETL + Machine Learning, as well as Amazon Redshift as the core analytics data store.
In this session, Miguel and Alan walk you through Vevo's journey, describing best practices and learnings that the Vevo team has picked up along the way.
Netflix's Could Migration
Netflix migrated its infrastructure from on-premise data centers to the cloud starting in 2008 due to issues with its monolithic architecture. It moved services gradually to AWS using microservices. This provided agility through continuous delivery, elasticity to dynamically scale, and resiliency through redundancy. Netflix also moved corporate systems like email to SaaS. The cloud transformation required changes to its operations model and culture to become more decentralized and cloud-native. Horizon is OpenStack’s web-based user interface. It is constructed in two parts: 1) a core set of libraries for implementing a dashboard; 2) a reference dashboard implementation that uses the core set of libraries. Customization is key to the Horizon framework. It allows developers to construct their own dashboards, panel groups, and panels, and assemble them via a common navigation/presentation framework.
In this presentation, David will provide a brief introduction to OpenStack and Horizon. Then he will review Horizon’s architecture, explain how it integrates with other OpenStack services, examine its most interesting features, and describe how to start developing with it.

DataOps challenges us to build data experiences in a repeatable way. For those with Kafka, this means finding a means of deploying flows in an automated and consistent fashion.
The challenge is to make the deployment of Kafka flows consistent across different technologies and systems: the topics, the schemas, the monitoring rules, the credentials, the connectors, the stream processing apps. And ideally not coupled to a particular infrastructure stack.
In this talk we will discuss the different approaches and benefits/disadvantages to automating the deployment of Kafka flows including Git operators and Kubernetes operators. We will walk through and demo deploying a flow on AWS EKS with MSK and Kafka Connect using GitOps practices: including a stream processing application, S3 connector with credentials held in AWS Secrets Manager.

In this presentation, Juergen Brendel and David Lapsley review Ansible and provide some sample playbooks to get developers up and running quickly. They also describes how to use Ansible, Vagrant, Devstack, and OpenStack to accelerate OpenStack development cycles.
VXLAN Distributed Service Node
VXLAN is a point to point, UDP-based "tunneling" protocol, that enables L2 encapsulation over an L3 "undernet", while also allowing up to 16 million Virtual Networks. One challenge with deploying VXLAN is that by default VXLAN requires multicast support for Broadcast, Unknown and Multi-cast packets. Often this is not possible in customer networks. An alternative approach is to use the Service Node concept where dedicated node(s)/process(es) are responsible for flooding Broadcast, Unknown, and Multicast packets throughout a network.
This removes the need for multi-cast, and greatly simplifies network configuration. However, it does require a scalable, and highly available implementation.

The OpenStack Horizon project provides a web-based User Interface to OpenStack services. It is constructed in two parts: (1) a core set of libraries for implementing a Dashboard; (2) the dashboard implementation that uses the core set of libraries.

Django is a wonderful framework, but a little dated. Pre-dates the rise in client-side and single page applications.
Javascript is used for enhancing the user experience
In the time since Horizon was first architected, there have been major advances in the design, and best practices for web applications. In particular, the use of more sophisticated and robust client-side javascript frameworks like BackboneJS, AngularJS, MeteorJS, have come to the fore.
These applications provide a much more responsive user experience, much cleaner separation between the client and server, enable configuration driven interfaces, and facilitate more modular testing.
This in turn, results in shorter development cycles, more testable software, and above all, a better user experience.
In this presentation, we share some of our recent work in re-architecting parts of Horizon to take advantage of these new technologies. We discuss some of the technologies we use, our application architecture, and some of the pitfalls to avoid.

Key aspects covered include adding a REST API resource and controller to retrieve and manage data, integrating AngularJS templates and directives into Horizon templates, and maintaining a clean separation of client-side and server-side code. Contributing to Horizon and using Devstack for OpenStack development is also briefly discussed.
OpenStack Horizon: Controlling the Cloud using Django
OpenStack is an open source cloud computing project that is implemented predominantly in Python. OpenStack’s goal is to provide the "ubiquitous open source cloud computing platform for public and private clouds”. The OpenStack project was launched by Rackspace and NASA in July 2010. Since then the project has gained considerable momentum with over 200 companies joining the project, and the launch of commercial services and products that use OpenStack.
The OpenStack Horizon project provides a web-based User Interface to OpenStack services. It is constructed in two parts: (1) a core set of libraries for implementing a Dashboard; (2) a reference dashboard implementation that uses the core set of libraries. Customization is a core part of the Horizon Framework. The framework enables developers to construct their own dashboards, panel groups and panels, and enables them to assemble them together via a common navigation/presentation framework.
In this presentation, we will provide a brief introduction to OpenStack and Horizon. Then we will dive into the details of Horizon. We will review Horizon’s overall architecture and how it integrates with other OpenStack services. We will look at some of Horizon’s interesting features and describe how to get started developing with Horizon. Finally, we will discuss some of the current challenges facing Horizon and some future directions.

This document provides an overview and tutorial on using Devstack to deploy Quantum and OpenStack for development. It outlines the overall Nova/Quantum architecture, instance launching process, and how to quickly deploy Devstack. It then demonstrates both a single-node and multi-node development deployment of Devstack with the Open vSwitch plugin. Finally, it provides some tips and tricks, including that default images may need patching to support multiple interfaces, the quantum.sh script can automate testing, and virtualbox works well for multi-node development.

HijackLoader Evolution: Interactive Process Hollowing
CrowdStrike researchers have identified a HijackLoader (aka IDAT Loader) sample that employs sophisticated evasion techniques to enhance the complexity of the threat. HijackLoader, an increasingly popular tool among adversaries for deploying additional payloads and tooling, continues to evolve as its developers experiment and enhance its capabilities.
In their analysis of a recent HijackLoader sample, CrowdStrike researchers discovered new techniques designed to increase the defense evasion capabilities of the loader. The malware developer used a standard process hollowing technique coupled with an additional trigger that was activated by the parent process writing to a pipe. This new approach, called "Interactive Process Hollowing", has the potential to make defense evasion stealthier.
