‘Interdisciplinary course on environment and development for international students’
Month long course from the 1st to the 29th of August, 2014.
Partner Organisation: Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) New Delhi
This training course gives 25 participants from South Asian and International universities the opportunity to critically explore environment and development, poverty, democracy, equity and justice, and culture. As a part of this course, you will be involved in writing, designing and editing a magazine. No prior experience related to writing or journalism is needed.
On this course you are encouraged to debate, deliberate and discuss issues that prevail when balancing development within an environmental context. The course structure is a combination of lectures, workshops and local field trip. Expert lecturers include policy makers, development professionals, leading activists, researchers and eminent academics. Course modules covered will include:
- Poverty and the biomass economy
- Natural resources management and governance
- Environmental conflicts
- Urban growth challenges: water, waste, pollution and mobility
- Sustainable industrialization
- Climate change: Southern perspectives
During the course you will have the opportunity to engage with community led initiatives during a week long rural field trip.

The ‘Challenge of the Balance’ course is an
interdisciplinary orientation programme to give
international participants a first-hand experience
of southern perspectives of the environmentdevelopment debate.
Through lectures, field visits and coursework, the
25 participants will understand and critically
evaluate issues that lie at the interface of
environment
and development, poverty, democracy,
equality and culture.
The course includes classroom lectures, local field
excursions, together with challenging individual
and/or group project work. Field trips will serve to
illustrate innovations and eco-restoration efforts
that communities make to enable them to face
the challenges of managing their natural
resources base. On this course you are
encouraged to debate, deliberate and discuss
issues that prevail when balancing development
within an environmental context.

3. TRIPS: OBSERVE. IMMERSE.
ENGAGE.
The highlight of the programme is the
opportunity for participants to learn from
rural communities during a week-long field
visit. Participants will see practical,
technical and sustainable solutions. (such
as solutions to water management,
decentralised solid and liquid waste
management, meeting a community’s
energy needs, among others).
In addition to this week-long field visit, the
programme includes several local field
excursions, to familiarise participants with
urban challenges, including air pollution
and urban mobility, river pollution and
waste management.
During the course you will write, edit and
produce your own magazine based on the
stories you encounter. The location of the
field trip changes from year to year and
problems affecting the local area will form
the basis for the content of the magazine
that will be produced with training by CSEs

The cost of the course is £1050 and is payable in full by May 2014, with a
deposit of £250 required to secure a place. Spaces will be given on a first come,
first served basis so apply early to avoid disappointment.

8. VISAS
Participants are solely responsible for ensuring they have the correct visa to enter India. Previous
participants have travelled on tourist visas, however requirements have recently changed.
All details of visa requirements and applications can be found on the official Indian Visa
Application Centre website http://in.vfsglobal.co.uk/. We strongly recommend applying as early
as possible.
All foreign nationals need a visa to enter India, the only exceptions being nationals of Nepal and
Bhutan (Note: Nepalese nationals need a visa if entering India from China). All details of visa
requirements and applications can be found on the official Indian Visa website:

Those travelling from or through yellow fever countries must have a valid vaccination certificate.
We can provide a letter of invitation if required. This is often not necessary but previously has been
required for those travelling on a Pakistani passport and those applying for a non-tourist visa (such
as an entry VISA). In this case we recommend you get in touch with us directly.
The photo required for a visa is 2 inch x 2 inch (50mm x 50mm). Note that this is not standard
passport size. These can be produced by the vending machine at the visa application centre and
photo shops should also be able to produce them for you.
Passport validity
Your passport must have 2 blank pages for your visa and must be valid for a minimum of 180 days
at the time of your visa application.
Fees
Visa fees once deposited cannot be refunded so it’s important to make sure your application is
complete and correct before submitting it. Applicants can submit their visa applications either in
person at the application centres or by post. Some application centres (Cardiff and Glasgow) do not
have a passport collections service and will return passport by secured post. This requires the
additional charge and processing time associated with postage of passport to the applicant.
Processing times vary but can be significant, decide how you wish to apply now, and organise when
you are going to apply accordingly. Leave enough time There are application centres in Birmingham,
Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Hayes and Cardiff

9. TRAVEL HEALTH
TRAVEL INFORMATION

VACCINATIONS AND HEALTH INFORMATION
Although we will try our best to ensure you are safe and comfortable, neither CSE or
EWB-UK can be held responsible for your health and safety during your stay in
Delhi or during the field visit(s).
It is recommendable to visit your Doctor and/or a specialist Travel Clinic (e.g. Nomad)
before travelling abroad to discuss advised vaccinations and medical precautions.
This should be done at least 6 weeks before travelling. If your GP cannot provide the
vaccinations you need, they should be able to refer you to a travel clinic. Your GP
may charge for some travel vaccinations but others will be available on the NHS.
Malaria is not prevalent in New Delhi where the majority of the course is held.
However the location of the field trip is not confirmed and some areas of India come
with anti-malarial recommendations.
It is not common practice to drink tap water in India, and as such drinking water will
be provided at all times.

10. OTHER INFORMATION
Faculty:
CSE’s training programmes attract leading experts across various fields to address
course participants. The core faculty for the proposed course will be drawn from
CSE’s experienced research and programme staff. Visiting faculty and guest lecturers
will include working development professionals, eminent environmentalists, noted
academicians from leading universities, grassroots activists and prominent policy
makers, and others.
Course attendance
This is an intensive, full-time course (Monday- Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:30 pm). Full
attendance is mandatory over the entire duration of the course.
The Certificate of Participation will be awarded to those candidates who maintain full
attendance, and have enthusiastically participated in all course activities, including
in-class presentations, readings and discussions, individual and group work, together
with the efforts made in the course assignments.
Learning facilities at CSE
• Classroom with projectors, whiteboards, etc.
• Wireless internet connectivity.
• You are encouraged to use the CSE library located in the basement of the AAETI
building (timings: 9:30 am - 7:00 pm, Monday- Saturday). You may check out books
and periodicals, but please ensure you return such materials before the end of the
course.
• The Audio-Visual Centre (also housed in the CSE library) has a large collection of
interesting documentaries on many environment and development-related topics.
