Gold affects currencies and economies in several ways:
1) Gold continues to impact the value of currencies in developed nations, even though it is no longer used as a primary currency. There is a strong correlation between gold's value and the strength of currencies on foreign exchanges.
2) In India, rising gold imports were hurting the current account deficit, so the government increased import duties on gold from 4% to 10% to reduce purchases. 20% of gold imports must now be exported with value addition.
3) A World Gold Council report estimates gold's direct economic impact is at least $210 billion globally and impacts communities and governments around the role of gold.
