Colorado Riverfront Project - Stacy Beaugh, Tamarisk Coalition
Grand Junction, CO is one of the only metropolitan areas of its size that sits on the Colorado River, source of water for over 30 million people. The river sustains our way of life through agriculture and recreation, and is critical to desert ecosystems. For over 25 years the Colorado Riverfront Commission helped the greater Grand Junction community (Grand Valley) be stewards of this resource.
The Riverfront Commission was founded in 1987 to serve the City of Grand Junction, Town of Palisade, City of Fruita and Mesa County by coordinating efforts to revitalize and enhance the Colorado Riverfront. The Commission, a volunteer advisory board, boasts diverse membership from local elected officials (ex-offico members), state park and local government representatives, and community members whose current professions range from bankers, doctors, nonprofit administrators, students, lawyers, retirees, and others.
Among many accomplishments, our primary focus has been to connect the various community resources, open space, and parks by completing a paved, recreational trail along the greenway of the Colorado Riverfront in Western Colorado, otherwise known as connecting the “string of pearls”. The Riverfront Trail is becoming a vital backbone trail allowing connection to the incredible natural resources available on public lands surrounding the Grand Valley including five parks that make up the James M. Robb Colorado River State Park system and numerous state wildlife areas. The long-awaited connection between the towns of Fruita and Grand Junction will be completed in August of 2014 and there are many smaller non-connected sections completed between Grand Junction and the town of Palisade, all totaling over 22 miles of hard surface trails. The Riverfront trails current footprint is approximately 2/3 of the Grand Valley’s riverfront and is seen by the community as an alternative transportation corridor, providing non-motorized access to state parks and wildlife areas; is a venue for maintaining a healthy lifestyle; provides opportunities for education; and has provided access to the river for boating, wildlife and bird viewing, and other recreational activities.

They have 4 children enrolled and Susan has served on the board for a year as Secretary. Both Susan and Eric have volunteered at events, coordinating, chaperoning and videotaping. Susan also creates posters, brochures and programs.
Erin Reynolds received the McKerral Award for Community Volunteer of the Year. She has been a board member for 2 years and found the organization through Volunteer Ottawa. Erin is also a member of the Ottawa Classical Choir and has worked on board projects like risk management and marketing.
Literacy celebration 2014
The Literacy Center (TLC) held its Literacy Celebration Wednesday, April 30, at Old National Bank. The celebration was held in honor of their volunteer service and student success.
The Service Award goes to someone who has exhibited an exceptional amount of willingness to go above and beyond the traditional volunteer expectations. The winners were Katy Dunigan, a former executive director and current board of directors member for the past six years, and Reece McDevitt, a volunteer for the past year who has assisted them with events, editing, additional educational opportunities and tutoring.
The Student of the Year award is given to a student who has exhibited an exceptional amount of commitment, determination, and success in working toward or achieving his or her goals. The award was given to Ashley Sauer. Ashley is a student who has shown exceptional progress towards her goals and has consistently gone above our requirements including being a spokesperson. Due to confidentiality of our services, the name of the other student of the year cannot be released at this time.
The Tutor of the Year award goes to a volunteer tutor who has exhibited an exceptional amount of generosity, effort, and commitment to his/her student and to TLC. The award was given to Jessica Mallinder. Jessica joined TLC after relocating to Evansville in late 2012. She has a contagious energy and utilizes innovative tutoring methods that have helped her student make tremendous progress in a short period of time. She helps with additional task behind the scenes including editing and events.
Our Friend of Literacy Award honors members of the community whose exceptional contributions have enabled TLCs to advance adult literacy in the community. The winners were Dennis John Bailey and Diane Douglas of the WIKY Morning show. “DJB & Diane go above and beyond when getting the word out about our services and events.” said Jennifer Wigginton, Executive Director. “They are not only friends of The Literacy Center but the community as a whole.”
The Gordon R. & Helen McKinney Memorial Service Award was the top honor of the night, and went to someone who is an integral part of the Literacy Center’s success. It can be a long time volunteer, a former board member, or a community leader who has contributed large amounts of time, energy, or resources to TLC. The award was giving to Susanna Hoeness-Krupsaw. Susanna is celebrating her 20 year anniversary this year with the Literacy Center and has been a tutor and trainer of volunteer tutors for many years. She has had many students of all levels and is currently Ashley Sauer’s tutor. “She has always gone above and beyond for each of her students in the past twenty years and is essential to our tutor training for our volunteers to understand the challenges of the adult learner,” said Jennifer Wigginton, Executive Director. “It is a privilege to know and work with her.”

Erin Reynolds received the McKerral Award for Community Volunteer of the Year. She has been a board member for 2 years and found the organization through Volunteer Ottawa. Erin is also a member of the Ottawa Classical Choir and has worked on board projects like risk management and marketing.

Literacy celebration 2014
The Literacy Center (TLC) held its Literacy Celebration Wednesday, April 30, at Old National Bank. The celebration was held in honor of their volunteer service and student success.
The Service Award goes to someone who has exhibited an exceptional amount of willingness to go above and beyond the traditional volunteer expectations. The winners were Katy Dunigan, a former executive director and current board of directors member for the past six years, and Reece McDevitt, a volunteer for the past year who has assisted them with events, editing, additional educational opportunities and tutoring.
The Student of the Year award is given to a student who has exhibited an exceptional amount of commitment, determination, and success in working toward or achieving his or her goals. The award was given to Ashley Sauer. Ashley is a student who has shown exceptional progress towards her goals and has consistently gone above our requirements including being a spokesperson. Due to confidentiality of our services, the name of the other student of the year cannot be released at this time.
The Tutor of the Year award goes to a volunteer tutor who has exhibited an exceptional amount of generosity, effort, and commitment to his/her student and to TLC. The award was given to Jessica Mallinder. Jessica joined TLC after relocating to Evansville in late 2012. She has a contagious energy and utilizes innovative tutoring methods that have helped her student make tremendous progress in a short period of time. She helps with additional task behind the scenes including editing and events.
Our Friend of Literacy Award honors members of the community whose exceptional contributions have enabled TLCs to advance adult literacy in the community. The winners were Dennis John Bailey and Diane Douglas of the WIKY Morning show. “DJB & Diane go above and beyond when getting the word out about our services and events.” said Jennifer Wigginton, Executive Director. “They are not only friends of The Literacy Center but the community as a whole.”
The Gordon R. & Helen McKinney Memorial Service Award was the top honor of the night, and went to someone who is an integral part of the Literacy Center’s success. It can be a long time volunteer, a former board member, or a community leader who has contributed large amounts of time, energy, or resources to TLC. The award was giving to Susanna Hoeness-Krupsaw. Susanna is celebrating her 20 year anniversary this year with the Literacy Center and has been a tutor and trainer of volunteer tutors for many years. She has had many students of all levels and is currently Ashley Sauer’s tutor. “She has always gone above and beyond for each of her students in the past twenty years and is essential to our tutor training for our volunteers to understand the challenges of the adult learner,” said Jennifer Wigginton, Executive Director. “It is a privilege to know and work with her.”

This Presentation Documents the Rites of Passage Graduation Celebration for the Seniors of the Turning Point of Lansing, Michigan Non-Profit Community Organization. The Turning Point is comprised of a group of dedicated men in the Lansing Minority community who donate many hours of their time to mentor, direct, and counsel young black males residing in the Greater Lansing, Michigan area.
Many of the young men are from single family homes. Some had encountered adjustment problems in the public school systems and need someone in their corner to help them figure out how to navigate the difficult transition from Boys to Men for black adolescent youth.
This presentation shows some of the phases of the Rites of Passage ceremony, and also the reception immediately after the graduation ceremony. The ceremony was held at Lansing Community College at Dart auditorium on May 13, 2015.
A separate photo album presentation is also uploaded in which approximately 90 photographs taken at the even are shared.
