Brazil faces significant challenges from an aging population. [1] Life expectancy has increased dramatically over the past century and Brazil now has over 22 million elderly citizens, a number projected to rise to 31.8 million by 2020. [2] Most elderly Brazilians live in urban areas, with high concentrations in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. [3] Healthcare costs are increasing as the population ages and chronic diseases become more prevalent, yet the current health system model remains focused on acute illnesses. Integrated health and social care is needed to address the multiple chronic conditions of most elderly Brazilians.
