· Renaissance (1300 – 1600)
· Description of movement
Renaissance refers to the period in Europe after the Middle
Ages that witnessed a massive renewal of attention to classical
knowledge and standards of the ancient Greece and Rome. The
roots of this movement originated from Italy during the late and
early thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, respectively. This
period experienced a massive flourish in art and literature and
was fostered by the establishment of new technologies such as
the printing press as well as great political stability. The style
of sculpture, sculpture, painting and decorative arts recognized
during this period attained its pick during the late and early
fifteenth and sixteenth centuries respectively (Grendler, 1991).
The art identified with this period sought to highlight individual
experience, mystery, and beauty of the natural environment.
Renaissance is characterized with a renewed commitment to
2. humanism and the deferential renewal of classical Roman or
Greek art forms as well as styles.

· Mona Lisa
This painting was created by Leonardo da Vinci in 1503 and
completed in 1519 in Florence. It is also an oil painting on a
poplar wood panel. The original size of the artwork is 77 x 53
cm. it is currently located in Musée du Louvre, Paris.
· The Birth of Venus
The Birth of Venus is a painting by Sandro Botticelli created in
1484 and completed in 1486. The medium of the painting is a
Tempera on canvas and its original size is 1.72 m x 2.78 m.
This art is currently located in Uffizi Gallery, Florence.
· Baroque (1600 to 1750)
· Description of movement
Baroque is an extremely decorative style of music, architecture,
and art that emerged and blossomed in Europe during the early
seventeenth century and late eighteenth century. This movement
followed the Renaissance period. This movement witnessed the
establishment of tonality in which a piece was authored in a
specific key. Some of the key composers during this era include
Vivaldi and Monteverdi and among others. Garretson (1993)
states that this era was characterized by the dramatic application
of color and key qualities related to Baroque include grandeur
and vitality.

· The Calling of Saint Matthew
The Calling of Saint Matthew is a large oil painting by Italian
painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. It was created and
completed between 1599 and 1600. The medium of the painting
is oil on canvas and its size is 322 cm × 340 cm. The painting
was created in Rome, Italy.
· The Four Continents
The Four Continents is a painting by Peter Paul Rubens created
in 1614. It is an oil on canvas painting and its size is 209 cm
× 284 cm. The painting is currently located in Kunsthistorisches

· Romanticism (1780-1850)
· Description of movement
This era is identified with the artistic, musical, literary and
intellectual movement, which emerged from Europe in 1780.
According to Garvin (1980), this movement highlighted the
fight for freedom, equity, and justice as painters used prevailing
events and human rights violations to drive attention to
injustices through dramatic compositions. Some of the key
characteristics of this movement include a focus on emotive and
creative spontaneity, denunciation of industrialization and
idealization of females.

· The Third of May 1808
The Third of May 1808 was created by Francisco Goya and
completed in 1814. It is an oil on canvas painting whose
dimensions are 2.68 m x 3.47 m. The painting is currently
located in Museo del Prado, Madrid.
· The Monk by the Sea
The Monk by the Sea is an oil painting by Caspar David
Friedrich created between 1808 and 1810 in Dresden, Germany.
The size of the painting is 1.1 m x 1.72 m and currently located
in Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
· Impressionism (1872-1892)
· Description of movement
This movement is regarded as the first noticeably contemporary
movement in painting. It was stared by a group of artists in
Paris, France through their personal exhibitions that enhanced
their popularity between the 1870s and 1880s (Nochlin, 1966).
Its impact later spread across Europe and the US. The founders
of this movement objected the formal, state-sanctioned
exhibitions and were later rejected by key academic art
establishments. Some of the features of this movement include
the focus on the correct portrayal of light in its shifting
elements, emphasis on the ordinary subject matter and open
composition.

The Beach at Trouville is an impressionist painting by Claude
Monet created in 1870. It is an oil painting on canvas whose
dimensions are 38 cm x 46.5 cm and currently located in
Wadsworth, Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut.
· Impression, Sunrise
Impression, Sunrise is a painting by Claude Monet created and
completed in 1872. It is an oil on canvas painting whose
dimensions are 48 cm x 63 cm and currently located in Musee
Marmottan Monet, Paris.
· Modernism (1965)
· Description of movement
This movement was identified with rapid and unanticipated
separation from traditional methods of observing and relating to
the world in Western society over the late and early nineteenth
and twentieth centuries respectively. It is categorized with an
extremely self-conscious separation from traditional forms of
writing and facilitated an era of trialing in the arts (Garvin,
1980). Some of this separation from traditions is marked with a
sound objection to recognized political, social and religious
views.

· The Bathers
The Bathers is an oil painting created by Paul Cezanne between
1898 and 1905. It is an oil on canvas painting whose dimensions
are 210.5 cm x 250.8 cm and currently located in the
Philadelphia Museum of Art.
· Family of Saltimbanques
The Family of Saltimbanques is a painting by Pablo Picasso and
was completed in 1905. It is on oil on canvas painting whose
dimensions are 212.8 cm x 229.6 cm and currently located in
Chester Dale Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington,
D.C.
