Rallying around the gov-
ernment over the
demonetisation issue as it faces
attack from a united Opposi-
tion, top BJP leaders on Thurs-
day asserted that there is wide
spread support from people for
the decision and the criticism
is merely confined to rival par-
ties.
Chairing a meeting of of-
fice-bearers, BJP president
Amit Shah said here that the
mandate the party has received
is not for doing what merely
looks good to people but to do
what is good for them and
hailed the note ban as a “vi-
sionary” step and a reflection
of Prime Minister Narendra
Modi’s political will to change
the fundamentals of Indian
economy.
With little relief for people
from standing in long queues
outside banks andATMs to get
cash, BJP’s rivals have closed
ranks to target the government
but its top leaders exuded con-
fidence that they can sell the
decision to masses as some-
thing that is in the country’s
Mandate is for doing what
is good for people: Shahinterests.
“Demonetisation
is a visionary de-
cision of political
will aimed at
curbing black
money and cor-
ruption. The par-
ties criticising it
are doing so out of
political malice.
But the mandate
we have received
is not for taking
decisions which
merely look good
to people but
which are good
for them.
“We will not remain con-
fined to small reforms but
bring about fundamental
changes in the economy,” Shah
told the meeting of office-bear-
ers on a day when Parliament
saw another day of washout
with treasury benches and op-
position trading charges.
A senior party leader
quoted Shah as saying that it
is imperative to kill parallel
economy running on black
money to boost the country’s
resources so that it can invest
heavily in education, health
and other sectors.
He also said that Indian
youths should be holding many
global patents and it can be
done only with massive invest-
ment in education and re-
search.
Its National Secretary
Shrikant Sharma said the of-
fice-bearers, which included
state in-charges, also shared
ground feedback on
demonetisation.
“People have appreciated
the move and the feedback is
very encouraging for the party.
Villagers and farmers are
happy. Its opposition is con-
fined to out political rivals,” he
said following the meeting.
The party leaders also de-
cided to push their awareness
drive across the country on less
cash transaction underpinned
by digital mode of payment.
Shah also took feedback
from office-bearers over the
action taken on organisational
proposals mooted in the previ-
ous national executive meeting
as BJP prepares for the next ex-
ecutive meeting to be held in
the national capital in January.
He said demonetisation will
have positive impact which
will be visible in the times
ahead.
He stressed on the need to
take the awareness campaign
over digital and mobile trans-
actions to states.
Digital economy should
become a way of life and it
would lead to transparency,
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
said at the BJP's Parliamentary
Party meeting on the Parlia-
ment premises on Friday.
Senior party leader L.K.
Advani, party president Amit
Shah, Union Ministers, includ-
Digital economy should
become a way of life: Modiing Rajnath Singh and M.
Venkaiah Naidu, were present.
Union Minister H. N.
Ananth Kumar said after the
meeting, "Today is December
16, Liberation Day for
Bangladesh. Then the Opposi-
tion did not ask for proof of the
government 's intent, now it
does."
Mr. Kumar told reporters
that the Prime Minister said at
the meeting that earlier the
government used to indulge in
scams and the Opposition used
to unite to expose it. Now the
government is fighting black
money and the Opposition is
uniting to oppose that.
Swaraj India, the political
wing of the Swaraj Abhiyan
that was launched last year,
held its first rally in the Capi-
tal on Sunday.Attacking black
money and demonetisation at
Jantar Mantar, leaders of
Swaraj India accused the
Union government of mislead-
ing people with its “half-
hearted” attempts at tackling
black money. According to
them, political parties were
“functioning as conduits” in
converting black money.
Swaraj India claimed that
the NDA-led Central govern-
ment was “equally insincere”
as the previous UPA govern-
ment when it came to meeting
the challenges posed by the
menace of black money. At its
Sunday rally, which was at-
tended by hundreds of support-
ers, activists and other groups,
the leaders said that the ongo-
ing proceedings against black
money had been guarded by
political parties. Criticising the
recent decision to leave out
political parties from the tax
ambit,YogendraYadav, who is
one of the founding members
of Swaraj India, compared
black money to demon king
Ravana.

Most of the films made around themes sur-
rounding children, end up being preachy. Sarthak,
a feature film directed by PraveenVyas and Jayanti
Kundu is one of the rear films conveying a strong
message without being self- righteous in its tone.
The film Sarthak is a story that revolves around
the struggle of a teen age boy from his home to
the streets. As funny as it may sound, it is true that
children of this generation are brought up in such
an airtight sanitised environment that a majority
of them have almost forgotten the way of survival
in an unfriendly environment.
Sarthak, the protagonist does not even know
that the water he drinks is a natural element. His
How a child inspired his father
dependency on the luxuries provided by his
parents is so crucial that the existence of ev-
erything else ceases to matter to him. Stud-
ies, sports, music, dance- every single thing
that his parents want him to pursue seems
utterly boring to him. The outside world is
an alien entity for him. The lonelier he is, the
safer he feels. So much so he covers himself
behind a mask and thinks that others could
not see him. Father, Kumar (Praveen Vyas)
and Mother, Astha (Savita Yadav) are per-
turbed with Sarthak’s attitude. They do what-
ever they can to make Sarthak understand the
reality of life. They want Sarthak to live a
life of a normal child.
However, Sarthak is too lazy to make any
new efforts to show his interest in anything
whatsoever. He has a place to hide himself
and he is happy doing that.
One day, just by chance, Sarthak comes
across a boy Gopal (Geetansh Sharma) who
lives in the nearby Jhuggi. Geetansh is a smart
street stunt master. This is the first time that
anybody catches his fancy. Sarthak is hooked.
He follows Gopal. But that is not acceptable
by Kumar andAstha who are class conscious.
They just do not like the fact that Sarthak
roams around with vagabond slum boys. They
put a blanket ban on Sarthak association with
any of these boys.

PWD should immediately revoke
allotment of land to AAP : Ajay Maken
NEW DELHI: Delhi
Pradesh Congress Committee
president ShriAjay Maken said
the Aam Aadmi Party
Government’s decision to allot
Bungalow No 206, Rouse Av-
enue, New Delhi to the Aam
Aadmi Party was in “gross
violation” of all rules and pro-
cedures, as the decision is
clearly beyond the powers of
the Delhi Government. He said
“land” is a reserved subject,
irrespective of whether it is
owned by the Delhi Govern-
ment or the Government of In-
dia, and the Delhi Government
has no power to allot land to
the AAP, and termed it as a
very big scandal.
In a letter to Lt Governor Dr
Najeeb Jung today, Shri Maken
has detailed the rule violation
by the AAP Government in al-
lotting the Rouse Avenue bun-
galow to the AAP, which was
earlier occupied by AAP Min-
ister Shri Asim Ahmed Khan,
and sought a CBI probe into the
entire matter. (A copy of the
letter to the LG is enclosed).
Shri Maken has also de-
manded that the PWD should
immediately revoke the allot-
ment of Bungalow No 206 at
RouseAvenue, take its posses-
sion and recover market rent on
a penalty for unauthorized use
for the accommodation, furni-
ture and electrical installations.
Shri Maken has also re-
minded the Lt. Governor that
despite the Shunglu Commit-
tee submitting its report on
27th November to him, no ac-
tion has been taken. He sought
immediate action on the report.
“We have been given to under-
stand that at least 200 gross
violations of corrupt practices
have been observed. The
people of Delhi are very ea-
gerly awating to act on this re-
port”, Shri Maken added.
Addressing a press confer-
ence at the DPCC office, Rajiv
Bhawan here today, Shri
Maken said according to Ar-
ticle 239AA of the Constitu-
tion, Law, Police and Public
Order and Land are not with
the Delhi Government, and
wondered how could the AAP
Government allot the Rouse
Avenue Bungalow to its own
party, when it did not have the
powers to do so. He said the
entire case is a clear violation
of Constitutional Schemes of
Governance of Delhi, relevant
rules including the Transaction
of Business Rules, Allocation
of Business Rules, allotment of
Government Residential Ac-
commodation Rules etc. by the
elected Government. He said
the Delhi Government has de-
liberately flouted all rules,
norms and conventions in al-
lotting land to the AAP party.
Others present at the press con-
ference were chief spokesper-
son Smt. Sharmistha
Mukherjee, spokesperson
Pooja Bahri and senior leader
Shri Chattar Singh.
Shri Ajay Maken said the
AamAadmi Party had come to
power with the promise that it
would make a difference in
governance and work for the
people. He said the AAP Gov-
ernment has been in power for
almost two years, and it has not
built even a single house for the
jhuggi dwellers, whereas it has
allotted land to its own party,
in gross violation of rules and
regulations, as land powers are
not with the Delhi Govern-
ment. Shri Maken said theAAP
Government, which talks of
lack of powers, has all the pow-
ers in its hands when it comes
to allotting land to its own
party.

There is a dire need to have
a survivor-centric approach to-
wards victims of sexual vio-
lence, particularly children, the
Supreme Court on Thursday
said while restoring the convic-
tion a man for raping his nine-
year old niece in 2009 and
awarded him twelve years jail
term.
“Time is ripe to bring about
significant reforms in the
criminal justice system as well.
Equally, there is also a dire
need to have a survivor-centric
approach towards victims of
sexual violence, particularly
children, keeping in view the
traumatic long lasting effects
on such victims,” a bench of
Justices A K sikri and A M
Sapre said. The apex court also
said, “It would be adding in-
sult to injury to tell a woman
that her rape claims will not be
believed unless it is corrobo-
rated in material particulars.”
The bench held guilty a
Himachal Pradesh resident
Need for survivor-centric approach
towards sexual assult victims: SC
saying the evidence brought on
record contains positive proof,
credible sequence of events
and factual truth linking the re-
spondent (man) with rape of
the prosecutrix and had crimi-
nally intimidated her.
The state government had
challenged the high court ver-
dict by which the man was ac-
quitted of the rape charge.
The apex court also did not
buy the argument of delay in
filing the FIR as accepted by
the HC, and said, “It is not easy
to lodge a complaint of this na-
ture exposing the prosecutrix
to the risk of social stigma
which unfortunately still pre-
vails in our society.”
It said that “a decision to
lodge FIR becomes more dif-
ficult and hard when accused
happens to be a family mem-
ber.
In fact, incestuous abuse is
still regarded as a taboo to be
discussed in public”.
The bench said that not
only the honour of the family
is at stake but it may also
antagonise other relations as
well.
“The danger is more within
than outside,” it said adding
that most of the time an ac-
quaintance rapes, when culprit
is a family member, are not
even reported for various rea-
sons, not difficult to fathom.
“The strongest among those is
the fear of attracting social
stigma,” it said.
Seven NGOs, including one
run by activist Shabnam
Hashmi,werebarredbythegov-
ernment from receiving foreign
funds after their FCRA licences
were cancelled following al-
leged adverse intelligence re-
ports against them.
Registration under the For-
eign Contribution Regulation
Act (FCRA) of Act Now for
Harmony and Democracy
(ANHAD), run by Hashmi,
Marwar Muslim Education
and Welfare Society, Gujarat-
based Navsarjan Trust, Rural
Development Research Centre,
Ahmedabad, and three others
were cancelled by the Home
Govt cancels FCRA
licences of 7 NGOsMinistry, official sources said.
The decision has been taken
after the Home Ministry con-
ducted an inquiry into the func-
tioning of the NGOs whose
FCRA licences were renewed
in the recent past.
There were adverse intelli-
gence inputs against the seven
NGOs ranging from allegedly
working against public interest
by using foreign funds, paint-
ing the government as “anti-
Dalit” abroad, besides others.
FCRA licences of these
seven NGOs were claimed to
have been renewed “inadvert-
ently” despite alleged
unfavourable intelligence re-
ports. When it was detected
during the emergency audit,
their registration were can-
celled with immediate effect,
sources said.
Home Ministry has already
initiated a security audit of its
website to ascertain the possi-
bility hacking and subsequent
leak of data.
A red-faced Home Ministry
has seen a series of faux pas in
the matter of NGOs. Only on
Wednesday, it cancelled re-
newal of FCRA licence of
Greenpeace India and two
NGOs run by activist Teesta
Setalvad - Sabrang Trust and
Citizens for Justice and Peace
- two months after “inadvert-
ently” allowing their registra-
tion for five more years.
The Ministry has also or-
dered a review of recent re-
newal of FCRA registration of
13,000 NGOs to look into the
possible violation of existing
rules. While licence of
Greenpeace India and Sabrang
Trust were cancelled by the
government in the past, Citi-
zens for Justice and Peace was
put in prior permission cat-
egory, thus preventing it from
accepting foreign funds with-
out government permission.
Facebook is taking new
measures to curb the spread of
fake news on its
huge and influen-
tial social network,
focusing on the
“worst of the
worst” offenders
and partnering
with outside fact-
checkers to sort
honest news reports from
made-up stories that play to
people’s passions and precon-
ceived notions.
Fake news stories touch on
Facebook gets seriousv about fighting fake news
a broad range of subjects, from
unproven cancer cures to ce-
lebrity hoaxes and
backyard Bigfoot
sightings. But fake
political stories
have drawn atten-
tion because of the
possibility that
they influenced
public perceptions
and could have swayed the US
presidential election. There
have been other dangerous
real-world consequences. A
fake story about a child sex
ring at a Washington, DC,
pizza joint prompted a man to
fire an assault rifle inside the
restaurant, Comet Ping Pong.
“We do believe that we have
an obligation to combat the
spread of fake news,” said John
Hegeman, vice president of
product management on news
feed, in an interview.
But he added that
Facebook also takes its role to
provide people an open plat-
form seriously, and that it is not
the company’s place to decide
what is true or false.
The week-long trial of do-
ing away with the stamping of
baggage tags at the Delhi,
Mumbai, Hyderabad,
Bengaluru, Kolkata and
Ahmedabad airports started
on Thursday.
But international passen-
gers flying out of these air-
ports need to get handbags
stamped, a senior official of
the Civil Aviation Ministry
said.
The Bureau of Civil Avia-
tion Security (BCAS) had ini-
tiated a project, in collabora-
tion with the Hyderabad Inter-
national Airport Limited and
the Central Industrial Security
Force, for doing away with the
stamping of baggage tags in
one of the lanes at the
6 airports start trial
to drop baggage tags
Hyderabad airport.
“After its successful
completion, the BCAS has ad-
vised to do away with the
stamping of hand baggage
tags... for hassle-free move-
ment of passengers,” The
Ministry said in a statement.
After the BCAS goes
through the outcome of the
exercise, the practice will be
extended to other airports.
The Ministry said high-
resolution CCTV cameras and
other “appropriate technolo-
gies” were used by the airport
operators to strengthen bag-
gage screening. Civil Aviation
MinisterAshok Gajapathi Raju
called it a “progressive step”
and said it would bring down
the time spent at the airports.
In a move aimed at promot-
ing cashless transactions, the
government has asked banks to
adopt villages in clusters in
their effort to promote cashless
transactions. Besides, the Cen-
tre has also tasked all banks to
patronise villages which have
converted themselves to cash-
less. According to sources, the
banks have been told to adopt
mandis to propagate cashless
transactions and pay special at-
tention on Tribal and Dalit vil-
lages by giving a good demon-
strative impact.
Banks would also come up
with UPI and USSD plat-
forms to bring maximum cus-
tomers on cashless mode.
“The capacity of USSD has
been enhanced from 1 million
to 10 million to streamline the
online transactions. Techno-
crat Nandan Nilekheni has
been rope in simplifying op-
eration of USSD. A simpler
Banks told to adopt villages to
promote cashless transactions
application for cashless trans-
action is likely to be launched
on December 25, the birthday
of former PM Atal Bihari
Vajpayee,” the source said.
According to sources, the
decision in this regard was
taken at a high level meeting
with representatives of Re-
serve Bank of India and Na-
tional Payments Corporation
of India (NPCI). The meeting
was chaired by Ravi Shankar
Prasad and was attended by
secretaries of Banking, IT, rep-
resentatives of all major banks,
while officials of RBI and
NPCI participated online.
At the meet, which was
called to short out the techni-
cal glitches in cashless trans-
actions, all banks were told to
establish a robust helpline cen-
