This document provides a 3-step process for reading effectively in college: 1) Pre-read by previewing the text to make predictions, 2) Read actively by scanning, taking notes, and engaging with the text, and 3) Review what was read by summarizing notes, analyzing the content and author's arguments. The pre-reading step involves skimming titles, pictures and other elements to make guesses about the topic, main idea, and purpose before reading. Active reading involves note-taking, identifying key points and new vocabulary. The review step has students summarize their notes, analyze relationships to other topics, evaluate writing quality and identify missing information.
