A Wave of Panic
John and his brother Andrew arrived in Bali, Indonesia, early in the morning. After they found their hotel, they
quickly unpacked and headed to the beach to go surfing. The beach was incredible. The water was blue, clear and
warm while the sand was soft, white and clean. They both smiled to each other – it was their dream holiday!
A few hours later, the boys took a break from surfing and lay down on their towels on the beach. They were both
about to fall asleep when they noticed a small girl pointing towards the sea. For some strange reason, the sea was
moving out very quickly – so that soon there was just wet sand for around 50 metres! Andrew was taking pictures
of this strange sight with his smartphone when the girl’s father ran over to them. “We’ve got to get out of here!” he
shouted. “A tsunami is coming!”
Without collecting their belongings, the boys ran to the top of a big hill behind the hotel. There, tourists and locals
watched as a huge wave crashed onto the beach and destroyed the hotel. The boys felt relieved to be safe. It
wasn’t their dream holiday after all.
11 The boys went surfing before they went to
their hotel. ……..
12 They stopped surfing because they
were very tired. ……..
13 A small girl woke the boys up. ……..
14 Andrew’s smartphone had a camera. ……..
15 The boys left their things on the beach. ……..

  • 2. TEST 2B © Express Publishing PHOTOCOPIABLE 2 Legacy B1.1 Reading C Directions: Read the text below. Then, read the statements that follow it and mark them as T (True), F (False) or NI (No Information). A Wave of Panic John and his brother Andrew arrived in Bali, Indonesia, early in the morning. After they found their hotel, they quickly unpacked and headed to the beach to go surfing. The beach was incredible. The water was blue, clear and warm while the sand was soft, white and clean. They both smiled to each other – it was their dream holiday! A few hours later, the boys took a break from surfing and lay down on their towels on the beach. They were both about to fall asleep when they noticed a small girl pointing towards the sea. For some strange reason, the sea was moving out very quickly – so that soon there was just wet sand for around 50 metres! Andrew was taking pictures of this strange sight with his smartphone when the girl’s father ran over to them. “We’ve got to get out of here!” he shouted. “A tsunami is coming!” Without collecting their belongings, the boys ran to the top of a big hill behind the hotel. There, tourists and locals watched as a huge wave crashed onto the beach and destroyed the hotel. The boys felt relieved to be safe.
