PUNCTUATION MARKS
• Full stops (.) Make you stop It was the best of times.
• Commas (,) Make you pause She is clever, healthy woman.
• Exclamation marks (!) Signal excitement or surprise Look! How nice!
• Question marks (?) signal a question Do you enjoy reading books?
• Speech marks (‘…’) show the words a character speaks ‘I’m a Queen’ she
said.
• Dashes (-) give you extra emphasis Her answer was loud and clear – No!

The boat disaster
It was a sunny clear day when two brothers Jim and Ben went out
on the boat to catch some fish They jumped on the boat with fishing
roads in their hands both the brothers had been out on the boat five times
before They had no clue huge disaster about to occur the brothers were
sitting in the boat on the water when huge dark grey clouds started to
form the sky Suddenly huge drop of rain started to fall lightning lit up
the sky and loud roars of thunder boomed around them The water started
to rock the boat and the brothers kept falling off their feet The brothers11/8/2019 9
were very scared they were going to fall into the water they held on
hard to the boat and shut their eyes the boat kept rocking the water
kept coming The lightning kept flashing The thunder kept booming

and the thunder stopped booming The boys opened their eyes and saw
that the storm was over. They were safe!

PAST SIMPLE TENSE
• We often use past tenses for story telling.
• The Past Simple tense is used to talk about past states and
actions that happened in the past.
It was a beautiful day in spring.

• The Past Continuous tense is used: to set the scene in a story.
