10) Which of the following is not true concerning transposable elements?
A) Transposable elements can cause mutations in coding sequences.
B) Eukaryotes can inhibit the expression of the transposable elements via the RNAi pathway.
C) Transposable elements are mobile DNA elements that can insert themselves into other
locations of the genome.
D) Transposable elements make up a large portion of both eukaryotic and prokaryotic genomes.
E) All of the above are true
Solution
Transposable elements are DNA sequences that can change their position within a genome. They
make up the bulk of the genome, and can mutate gene sequences, or even change genome size of
the cell. Based on mechanism of transposition they can be classified as either Class I or Class II
TEs. TEs are mutagens, and have been known to cause diseases eg: Hemophilia A has been
linked to LINE1 TE mutation of human Factor VII. However, cells have developed a number of
ways to defend against TEs. In humans, the LINE1 TEs can be silence by activating RNA
interference (RNAi) mechanism.
Thus, the correct answer is: E) All of the above are true
