SET A TRAP: FEED’EM
▸ Create a reason for your colleagues to enter
your maker space for reasons other than
intentional making
▸ Offer coffee, pastries, a lunch if you’re feeling
ambitious or generous.
▸ Pace maker items / completed projects out
into the open for colleagues to see / touch /
think with

SEEK OUT PINCH POINTS
▸ Teachers all have a lesson or unit project that
makes them / students feel “Meh” or they are
looking to revisit
▸ Offer making as an alternative approach to
learning design
▸ Use the brainstorm cards & Pew Charts to
engage in divergent & convergent thinking to
develop a robust learning experience

but many students will be itching to “make”
▸ Find ways to uncover their interests & conduct
independent searches for potential opportunity

times: Before school, after school, indoor
recess
INVITE THE PARENTS TO BECOME CO-MAKERS
▸ Create events for families to come in for an
evening / afternoon of making
▸ Strive for a co-creator experience, and suggest
the event is collaborative to avoid “drop & go”
scenarios
▸ Parents can’t always advocate for something
they haven’t experienced

▸ Teachers may need time to develop their maker
identities
▸ Offer collaborative making experiences in low-risk
environments

interested
▸ Use the experience reflect & brainstorm future
opportunities
STANDING UPDATES AT FACULTY MEETINGS
▸ Ask for 1-2 minutes for an update at the faculty
meeting
▸ Come with a visual or an end product to move
from the abstract to the tangible
▸ Offer an opportunity to make or collaborate
▸ Ideally ask for time near the beginning of the
meeting. People are itching to go towards the
end
▸ Brevity

SET A TRAP: FEED’EM ▸ Create a reason for your colleagues to enter your maker space for reasons other than intentional making ▸ Offer coffee, pastries, a lunch if you’re feeling ambitious or generous. ▸ Pace maker items / completed projects out into the open for colleagues to see / touch / think with

  • 3. SEEK OUT PINCH POINTS ▸ Teachers all have a lesson or unit project that makes them / students feel “Meh” or they are looking to revisit ▸ Offer making as an alternative approach to learning design ▸ Use the brainstorm cards & Pew Charts to engage in divergent & convergent thinking to develop a robust learning experience

FOCUS ON THE END USER ▸ Your colleagues may be slow to jump on board, but many students will be itching to “make” ▸ Find ways to uncover their interests & conduct independent searches for potential opportunity to introduce kids to “things they don’t yet know they love” — Gary Stager ▸ You may have to offer it during alternative times: Before school, after school, indoor recess

INVITE THE PARENTS TO BECOME CO-MAKERS ▸ Create events for families to come in for an evening / afternoon of making ▸ Strive for a co-creator experience, and suggest the event is collaborative to avoid “drop & go” scenarios ▸ Parents can’t always advocate for something they haven’t experienced
  • 7. TAP EXISTING EXPERTISE What are teachers making out of school that they could make in school?

OFFER TEACHER-ONLY EVENTS ▸ Teachers may need time to develop their maker identities ▸ Offer collaborative making experiences in low-risk environments ▸ Involve your building admins to help you strategize ▸ Meet them where they are / where they are interested ▸ Use the experience reflect & brainstorm future opportunities

STANDING UPDATES AT FACULTY MEETINGS ▸ Ask for 1-2 minutes for an update at the faculty meeting ▸ Come with a visual or an end product to move from the abstract to the tangible ▸ Offer an opportunity to make or collaborate ▸ Ideally ask for time near the beginning of the meeting. People are itching to go towards the end ▸ Brevity
