Designate a design lead to delegate
tasks.
Create stations to make the head,
face, body, arms, legs, stand, and
scarecrow sign. (Scarecrows need to
be labeled with school & teacher
name/grade)
ThingstoAskKids
★ What colors do you want to use?
★ Do you think that material is the
best one?
★ How do you want it to look?
★ Do you think the scarecrow parts
are the right size?
Try to avoid leading questions like “Are
you sure you want to do it that way?”
Listeningtokids
★ Hear out their suggestions, even if
they are crazy.
★ Let them come to their own
conclusions about methods that work
or don’t work.
★ Acknowledge frustration, try to help
them identify the problem, ask them
and their friends for solutions.
★ Let them control their timing and
design process (within your real
time limit)
Remember it
doesn’t have to
look like
anything!
Scarecrows can
be scary and
weird!
Safety
★ Be near, but don’t do it for them.
★ Be present so that you have an idea of
what they are doing.
★ Let them cut. Demonstrate, ask them to
try with your help, then let them try.
Trust but use your judgement.
★ Help cut if needed, but ask the kids
to draw the places they want to have
cut.
★ Bring a first aid kit.
Giveasmanyopportunitiesaspossibletobeinvolved
TransportingtheScarecrow
★ Make it in pieces that can be disassembled
★ Make it sturdy enough to lie down in the
bed of a truck
★ Put it on wheels!
★ Involve available kids for lifting and
carrying
