Philip K. Dick s Influence On His Writings
Philip K. Dick an American author, most renowned for his works in science fiction, played a crucial
role in the development of the science fiction media industry today. His inspiration while writing
novels was unconventional, and ranged from visitations of a pink beam named 2 3 74, to a special
insight of a force outside of our universe which he referred to as Zebra. Philip K. Dick had many
influences on his writings such as drug use, Paranoid Personality Disorder, and Schizophrenia. Dick s
life left a massive impact on his writings and, throughout his novels, readers are able to observe
recurring apocalyptic like settings and the common theme of a totalitarian government, which,
together, create insightful social commentaries.
Philip K. Dick had several mental illnesses which had heavily influenced his writing. He often
reported recurring hallucinations of a pink beam along with other shapes and geometric patterns, as
well as claiming that he was living as a persecuted Christian in Rome named Thomas during the first
century AD (Aaronson). In addition to his mental illnesses, he had a history of drug use as well as a
struggle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It wasn t until around the 1950s to 60s where he went through a really significant creative period
(Fisher). Dick claimed to have contact with a force outside of Earth, called Zebra, which sparked his
creativity. These visions also inspired him to question and theorize the origins and meanings of the
human experience. Dick s claim of having contact with an outside force was likely due to one of his
several mental illnesses; however it did give him the motivation he needed to continue writing. During
the time of his newfound inspiration, he wrote some of his most famous novels like The Man in the
High Castle and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. The Man in the High Castle was the winner
of the Hugo Award for best novel in

The Affordable Care Act And Emergency Medical Services
The Affordable Care Act and Emergency Medical Services
Each year in the United States approximately 114 million people visit their local Emergency
Department (ED), and 16 million of these patients arrive by Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
(Board et al.) Health care in America has moved from an individual, fee for service health care
system, towards a more integrated healthcare system i.e., The Affordable Care Act (ACA), which is a
government controlled healthcare system, and is set up to be a value based payment system. The ACA
will expand and transform the roles of EMS within the healthcare system. EMS s ability to survive
and thrive in this new era of healthcare, will revolve, in part, on its ability to articulate its value to
healthcare providers, healthcare organizations, hospital systems, and payers, as well as patients and
family members. (Smith) EMS can thrive in the future, if it embraces change. John F. Kennedy had
this to say about change, Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are
certain to miss the future. (BrainyQuote) In order for EMS to thrive in the changes that the future is
bringing, it must: focus on mobile integrated healthcare, be data driven in their clinical practices.
There are three other areas that will be discussed at length, EMS agencies should be actively pursuing
a community paramedicine program, EMS using remote telemedicine and EMS moving towards a
value based payment system.

Words To Describe Louisiana
How do you describe Louisiana? That is a hard one because Louisiana is like no other state. Louisiana
became a state on April 30, 1812. Louisiana is 51,843 square miles. The state is divided into north and
south Louisiana, but throughout the state the culture is the same. The religion, music, people, areas,
food, and language are all very unique to Louisiana.
Within Louisiana there are several different religions. Many people from Louisiana are descendants of
Europeans and practice Catholicism (Louisiana Creole Culture). According to a study done in 2010,
the top five denominations of religion in Louisiana in this order are: Catholic, Southern Baptist, non
denomination, United Methodist, and National Baptist convention(Louisiana Religion Statistics). ...

Anytime you go to someone s house they will fix you some kind of food. Both Creole and Cajun
cooking developed in Southern Louisiana but popular in Northern Louisiana too. According to the
article Ducote wrote, Creole cooking is city food and Cajun cooking is country food. Both styles use
fresh local food, but the preparation is different. Cajun and Creole cuisine is popular throughout to the
State of Louisiana. Cajun cooking tends to be more robust and has more spice to it. A lot of Cajuns
live off the land and use the natural resources they have in order to survive. They live in the bayou and
swamps were fish, shellfish, and wild game are all over the place. The Cajuns did not try to replicate
European dishes since they did not have access to the exotic spices and other hard to find ingredients
that made up the more complex European dishes. Cajun food was shaped by were they settled. Cajun
cooking is simple and most of the dishes can be cooked all in one pot. They had an abundance of wild
game, seafood, wild vegetables and herbs in order to make their dishes. Creole cuisine comes from
French, Spanish, African, Native American, and Caribbean influences (Louisiana Creole Culture).
Creole cooking is all about sauces and the sauces are creamy and full of favors with use of herbs and
spices. Creole food represents Louisiana s flair and imagination. Unlike the Cajuns, the Creole people
were the upper class and felt they needed to recreate European dishes in order to be happy. Creole
cooking is more complex than Cajun. Unlike Cajun cooking, Creole cooking cooks all the ingredients
separately and serves them. They were able to afford rare spices and other foods from Europe that
were not readily found in Louisiana. Creole food is always full flavored, with generous components of
butter, pepper, salt and herbs. Creole cooking uses celery, bell pepper, and onions, cooked in a roux as
a starting point for a lot of Creole dishes

James Joyce s Araby
Loss of Innocence in Araby
In her story, Araby, James Joyce concentrates on character rather than on plot to reveal the ironies
inherent in self deception. On one level Araby is a story of initiation, of a boy s quest for the ideal.
The quest ends in failure but results in an inner awareness and a first step into manhood. On another
level the story consists of a grown man s remembered experience, for the story is told in retrospect by
a man who looks back to a particular moment of intense meaning and insight. As such, the boy s
experience is not restricted to youth s encounter with first love. Rather, it is a portrayal of a continuing
problem all through life: the incompatibility of the ideal, of the dream ... Show more content on

Although the young boy cannot apprehend it intellectually, he feels that the street, the town, and
Ireland itself have become ingrown, self satisfied, and unimaginative. It is a
world of spiritual stagnation, and as a result, the boy s outlook is severely limited. He is ignorant and
therefore innocent. Lonely, imaginative, and isolated, he lacks the understanding necessary for
evaluation and perspective. He is at first as blind as his world, but Joyce prepares us for his eventual
perceptive awakening by tempering his blindness with an unconscious rejection of the spiritual
stagnation of his world.
The boy s manner of thought is also made clear in the opening scenes. Religion controls the lives of
the inhabitants of North Richmond Street, but it is a dying religion and receives only lip service. The
boy, however, entering the new experience of first love, finds his vocabulary within the experiences of
his religious training and the romantic novels he has read. The result is an idealistic and confused
interpretation of love based on quasireligious terms and the imagery of romance. This convergence of
two great myths, the Christian with its symbols of hope and sacrifice and the Oriental or romantic with
its fragile symbols of heroism and escape, merge to form in his mind an illusory world of mystical and
ideal beauty. This convergence, which creates an epiphany for the

Where Have You Gone, Joe Dimaggio And Garfunkel s Song...
Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio, Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you, (Simon
Garfunkel, 1968). This famous song lyric from Simon and Garfunkel s song Mrs. Robinson has
sprung up much controversy in America, since it was released in the year 1968. Many tragedies and
changes had happened in the years between when Joe DiMaggio retired from his baseball career and
when this song was written. People wanted a happier time in the United States, like when Joe
DiMaggio was a major icon among the American people. Joe DiMaggio left behind a legacy in the
history of America, giving hope to not only Americans, but immigrants as well who were seeking the
American dream. He continues to lead MLB players for hitting streaks to this day, he led men in the
United States Army Air Forces, and he also established the Joe DiMaggio
Children s Hospital Foundation.
The lyric that was pulled from the song Mrs. Robinson, may be short but I think it tells a lot about
who Joe DiMaggio was as a person and how people viewed him at him at the time. Joe
DiMaggio was looked at as an idol when he was playing baseball. People thought that he was the
perfect example of the American dream. His parents were Italian immigrants and were very poor, so
seeing him become so famous gave many other immigrants a sense of hope for a better life. Between
the time that Joe DiMaggio ended his baseball career and the time that the song Mrs. Robinson was
written, many things had changed in America over the 17 year

Hesitanity In Hamlet
In Shakespeare s Hamlet, Hamlet does not succeed to the throne after his father s death, but if he had
would he have been a good king? Due to the fact that he was highly educated and clearly controls the
people s perception of him very well he would have made a very competent king of Denmark. The one
factor holding him back from being the perfect king are his wild emotions about his father s death and
mother s quick mariage. Hamlet has been well educated and Shakespeare makes it a point that we
know that, mentioning the university of Wittenberg at which Hamlet studied multiple times in act 1
scene 2. There is no doubt that Wittenberg was a respected school in northern Europe. Wittenberg is
also significant as it is the university in which Martin Luther taught. By picking this university for
Hamlet to attend, Shakespeare could have been alluding to how Hamlet was taught to think critically,
challenge the establishment and act definitively, the last of which ... Show more content on

Taylor believes that Hamlet s Doubt, hesitancy, suspicion are complemented inevitably by erroneous
conclusions and mistakes in action. However this is not an accurate depiction of Hamlet, yes he makes
mistakes but even with his network of spies he cannot possibly know everything, such as when
Claudius convinces Laertes that Hamlet is to blame for his sister s death. His decision to act mad
seems incredibly strange but considering the advantages it gave him quite shrewd. While he was
acting mad Hamlet was able to move around the castle and say ridiculous things to people to see their
reactions, something that would not have been acceptable if everyone knew he was sane. Claudius
permits this errant behavior, placing the blame for it on grief rather than

10472 Zip Code
The most recent census data available for the 10472 zip code area is the 2014 American Community
Survey. The 10472 zip code is located in the Soundview section of the South Bronx. This zip code
covers the northern area of Soundview, before the Bruckner Expressway. It is part of New York s 15th
congressional district, it s known for being the smallest and poorest congressional district in the US.
The 15th congressional district makes up for the majority of the Bronx, for this reason some of the
information presented will be compared to the Bronx borough and 15th congressional district census
data.
The demographics of Soundview residents has changed over the course of its existence, a trend that
occurs for New York City neighborhoods. The Bronx River is at the eastern borders of Soundview,
making a great settlement for its first dweller. The natives of the area were the Siwanoy tribe, they
were settled along bodies of water near New York City (Jackson, 1995). Therefore, the tribe settled
near the Bronx River up until the area became a point of interest for Dutch and English colonization
(Jackson, 1995). There was a constant struggle for the area, and the tensions led to the Siwanoy leave
the area. It might be one of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

What Is The Difference Between Manley Pointer And The Misfit
Even with their similar traits these men are extremely different. Manley Pointer could just be looked at
as a low time criminal stealing from those less fortunate. Manley s goal was just to steal Hulga s
prosthetic leg and this man had no remorse because this was not his first time leading somebody on
like Hulga, he even says, One time I got a woman s glass eye this way (Connor 9). The Misfit is much
more aggressive than Manley though. The Misfit was wrongfully accused of the murder of his father
and was incarcerated unfairly. He then escapes the prison and now feels it his place to commit the
crime he had been accused of. The Misfit say, because I can t make what all I done wrong fit what all I

How Benjamin Franklin Shaped American Culture
For his endless virtues in shaping the American aspect Benjamin Franklin could be considered as the
Father of the Country s persona. Benjamin Franklin can be considered one of the most influential
figures in the finding of the America nation. Franklin, the tenth son of fifteen children born to a family
of Boston artisans became a popular writer, world renowned scientist, successful publisher, civil
leader, diplomat, and a nation builder. Benjamin Franklin was the epitome of the Enlightenment, the
adaptable, practical embodiment of rational humanity in the eighteenth century (Loges, 23). Most
people are not familiar or aware of Franklin s input to the literary world. Franklin had unique views
and provided his generation with a different viewpoint on political and social events. Franklin poured
his thoughts into his writings, which were important to everyday life in everyday life during the
colonial age; important to American norms; and affected the virtues of the self made man.
Some of his widely known writings are his Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin and Poor Richard s
Almanac (Perkins and Perkins, 191). When reading a work by Franklin, one can highlight the
importance of honesty and hard working ethic in life. The article The Way to Wealth becomes one of
the most important business books and had been reprinted as well as translated into many languages

Icarus plummeted into the cold dark water filling his lungs with the salty water, he sank to the bottom

analyzing the assault on his senses he noticed the island had a very faint sweet smell barely discernible
in the company of the overbearing sea, this island was so pleasant starkly contrasting the death of his

Major Work Review
Significance of title The significance of the title of Angela s Ashes is up for debate. The title refers to
McCourt s mother, Angela; however, the ashes can have several different meanings. The ashes could
be related to the destruction of her family and loss of her children: Margaret, Eugene, and Oliver.
When they died, Angela was deeply depressed. Throughout the book McCourt mentions that his
mother glares toward the ashes falling from her cigarettes. Ashes are associated with death, dust, and
cinders. When the family was living in Laman s home they must act like slaves when they want
something: Laman says I m a good boy and the bike is mine anytime I want it as long as the chamber
pot is empty and I m there to run to the shop for his cigarettes, go to the library for whatever else he
wants. He says, you have a great way with a chamber pot. He laughs and Mama stares into the dead
ashes of the fireplace (253). This passage describes what McCourt family is had to live through,

Essay on Sino-American Relations
Sino American Relations I. Introduction The American President Nixon s historic trip to China in
February 1972 marked the beginning of a new era in Sino American relations. For the first time since
1949, the two countries established high level official contacts and transformed their relationship from
confrontation to collaboration. Over the following twenty years, however, U.S. China relations have
experienced repeated cycles of progress, stalemate, and crisis, with the events in Tiananmen Square in
June 1989 the most recent and disruptive example. Indeed, although relations between the two
countries are greatly more extensive today than they were twenty years ago, they remain highly

From 1949 to 1969, it is the period of ideological conflict. The international environment, especially
the occurrence of Korean War and the movement of the American Seventh Fleet into the Taiwan Strait
caused the conflicts between the 2 different ideologies become more serious. In the battlefield in
Korea, the two nations even act as enemies. Although in the early 60s President John Kennedy
considered open a dialogue with China but China and her leader s increasingly anti imperialist rhetoric
caused US s initiative to failure. To make a summary of this period, movement towards better
relationship made little progression and there had no way to negotiate, although there was chance, for
there was too many concrete actions like the later Vietnam War to prohibit. The second period was

The Negative Effects Of Mental Health In Student-Athletes
The negative impact mental health has had on student athletes is a continuous problem across the
globe and has been a topic of interest in the research world for many years. The stigma behind mental
health have lead to symptoms of depression and anxiety, reluctance to seek help, the sense of
helplessness and loneliness and many more. In a student athlete, these stress levels are brought upon
the individual for multiple reasons. For example, student athletes have to accomplish a certain degree
of success both on the playing field and in the classroom (A.P. , Deitrick, J.M. , Reynolds, E. (2016).
Maintaining a required average and playing time can become not only physically but mentally
exhausting. This literature review will discuss the barriers and facilitators to mental health in student
athletes and how the stigmatization of those student athletes who suffer from a mental illness have an
impact on their everyday life. Review of Literature Parental, Peer and Coach Pressure It is said that
the reason for student athletes experiencing higher stress levels are because of their extensive time
demands, pressures to achieve, physical burn out and conflict with teammates, coaches and teachers.
(J. W. 2015). In one hand I believe that this overall statement is true, but on the other hand I believe
the amount of stress depends on the individual and there involvement with their academics and
athletics (Sudano, L. E., Collins, G., Miles, C. M. (2017). With social stress, the

Summary Of Disability And The Justification Of Disability...
Douglas C. Baynton argues in his article, Disability and the Justification of Inequality in American
History , that the concept of disability is culturally constructed and has been paid little to no attention
to throughout history. He also argues that the term disability plays an important role in justifying
discriminations against minority groups, based on gender, race, and ethnicity. He states that Disability
has functioned historically to justify inequality for disabled people themselves, but it has also done so
for women and minority groups. That is, not only has it been considered justifiable to treat disabled
people unequally, but the concept of disability has been used to justify discrimination against other
groups by attributing disability to them. (Baynton 94) He used women s suffrage, African American
freedom, and immigration restriction as examples to show how disability played an essential role in
illustrating how minorities who were labeled as disabled were treated with discrimination. As they
were labeled with disability, discrimination against them became justifiable, which ultimately proves
that discrimination against disabled was thought as justifiable and were looked over.
Disability arguments were noticeable during 19th century because it was used to justify slavery and
other forms of inequality treatment and discriminations towards African Americans. White Americans
argued that African Americans had lack of sufficient intelligence to participate or

10% in 2009.
A shift to the Right
After election of June 2009 and a change in government, the Hungarian policy think tank which
represented 21% of Hungarians sympathised with the radical right s values and ideologies. The right
wing government had launched attacks on perceived enemies both inside and outside of Hungary
through tightening immigration laws, using anti minority to build political support.
Crisis Taxes
After the government agreed to meet EU deficit goals, Fidesz generated revenue through the referred
crisis taxes on banking sector, telecom, retail, energy, and pharmaceutical sectors, which were planned
for 3 years. Three months after the crisis taxes were passed, 15 multinational and local firms had
started to campaign against those taxes and threatened to cancel future investments in the country.

Children Should NOT Be In The Military
Have you ever thought about the kids that fight in war. Well that s a big problem Kids shouldn t be in
the military fighting, there are also people that want to prosecute them. I don t think that they should
be prosecuted because their to young to be prosecuted. There also to young charges to be pressed. One
reason why they shouldn t be prosecuted is because They were forced by either drugs or they were
brainwashed into doing killing. They were also forced to kill if they don t they would get killed, they
also made false promises. And most of them were kidnaped from their parents and villages. But some
kids join without being forced, they joined to avenge their family members. Children are easier to

Hip Hop vs Punk
The fashion aspect in Hip Hop and Punk is very distinctive. Throughout Hips Hop s history, the
fashion trends have evolved, but the concept of Hip Hop fashion has always remained conceptually
unchanged. This has given birth to a few varieties among Hip Hop fashion according to their
respective generations and choice of self expression through the four pillars of Hip Hop which are
Bboying (dance), MC/Rap (music), DJ (music) and Graffiti Art (visual art). The varieties of fashion
within the Punk culture differ from Hip Hop in a different aspect. While Hip Hop s fashion
alternatives were born from historical factors within the cultural aspects, Punk s sense of fashion

Since the establishment of the Hip Hop Culture, many dance styles have emerged during and after Hip
Hop s development, some of these styles are popping, Krumping and house. The Punk scene have also
developed dances unique to their culture, most noticeable is the Pogo. The Pogo is a dance where the
dancers jump up and down while remaining in the same location. There are occasions where the
dancers might bump each other. This gave birth to another Punk dance called Moshing where the
dancers deliberately bump against each other. The differences in dancing among Hip Hop and Punks
are not limited by the styles and music, but the community s lifestyle. Punk dancers, dance as a group
while Bboys take turns dancing in a circle. Visual arts in Hip Hop and Punk take a very different path
depending on the cultures goal. Graffiti Art is the usage of spray paint and pen markers to express
individuality through Hip Hop s philosophy of peace, love, unity and having fun by colors and
abstract texts or drawings. Punk visual art however is focused towards album covers, posters and
flyers designed to invoke empathy and sometimes contempt among readers and viewers by calling
upon issues such as social injustice. Literature and poetry are qualities that both cultures possess but
they differ in mediums. Hip Hop s literature and poetry is effectively shown the ability of the MC s

Sir Ernest Shackleton´s Survival in the Antarctic Essay...
For an exemplary leader, what is one of the highest compliments that you could ever receive? Sir
Ernest Shackleton was a British explorer who after failing to reach the Southern Pole first wanted to
be the first to ever accomplish a trans Antarctic expedition. On October 27th, 1915 Shackleton s boat
the Endurance was crushed by the pressure of the melting Antarctic ice; leaving Shackleton and his
crew stranded in the Antarctic. On August 30th, 1916 after a treacherous one and a half years of living
in the Antarctic and surrounding islands, Shackleton and his crew were rescued following an
unimaginable story of survival. The qualities of leadership Shackleton exhibited that resulted in the
survival of him and his crew were, having certain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By putting the needs of the crew ahead of his own, Shackleton acquired a level of respect and trust not

constantly on one s mind or routines must be followed correctly and/or on time. The benefit for the
Endurance s crew to have an obsessive man as Shackleton was that he was ready for the unexpected,
and his crew s safety was the utmost important topic for him. With Shackleton s obsessive nature, he
made a very specific routine for the men to follow; at exactly 9:00 am, breakfast was served, at 1:00
pm, lunch was served, at 4:00 pm, tea was served, and at 6:00 pm, dinner was served. Between the
meals, the men did chores such as, cleaning the ship and melting ice for drinking water. Such a precise
and stringent following of a routine gave the men purpose and managed to keep the men from going
stir crazy. The crew s safety was on Shackleton s mind from the moment everyone abandoned the
Endurance. Shackleton stopped all unnecessary activities that posed a risk to crew safety; for example,
he stopped Macklin and Greenstreet from paddling on an ice floe like children on a raft. Shackleton
also commenced unpredicted safety drills for cracking of their ice floe which could happen at any
moment. Shackleton often didn t sleep due to the fact that he worried about all the dangerous and
potentially fatal situations that he and his crew

Essay about Samba and the National Identity of Brazil
Art has always been used to symbolize one s culture, history, society and national identity. Countries
identify each other through their culture, their art. Art has many forms, one of them being music. One
of the most famous music genres in the world is samba. Due to the fact that Samba is the musical life
force of Brazil; it ultimately represents their national identity. To better understand why samba
represents the Brazilian s national identity, one has to understand the history of Brazil and samba.

Brazil s individual national character and rich musical tradition are the result of a profound mingling
of races that has been ongoing in the country since the landing of Pedro Alvares Cabral in April 1500.
Even before this event the indigenous Indians of Brazil had an already conventional musical culture;
they sang in chorus and solo, played horns, whistles, and flutes, and beat out rhythms with foot
stamping, beats, hand clapping, rattles, and drums. With the Portuguese invasion came the violin,
piano, clarinet, guitar, and tambourine. These were incorporated into the musical forms of modinha,
moda, fofa, acalanto, and fado, which were songs of lullaby, sentiment, and dance. The Portuguese
also brought religious festivals and pageants such as the bumba meu boi and reisado. The former in
festivity of the Epiphany and the latter a rich enactment of the death and resurrection of a mythical
bull. Entrudo, a rude festivity considered to be the precursor to Carnival, was also brought by the
Portuguese. Less than forty years after the arrival of Cabral, the first African slaves were brought to
Brazil. With them came another racial, cultural, and musical infusion. There were three main ethnic
groups that contributed to the boiling Brazilian melting pot: the Sudanese, the Bantu, and the Moslem
Guinea Sudanese. They contributed the circle dance and lundu song, a precursor to the samba. (Smith)

Looking For The Godfather
I believe the most important message in this story is to not abuse power. In the beginning of the story a
man was looking for a godfather for his son, the Lord was first to show up but the man said no
because the Lord was not fair, then the devil showed up but the devil was rejected because he cheats.
Then death shows up and the man believes he will be a good godfather because death takes every
person and is not bias. When the boy grew up, death gives him the gift to heal people; as long as he
follows the rules then he will become successful and rich. Death told the man that if he is at the
bottom of a sick person s feet then they are his and if death is at the sick persons head then they can be
healed. When the king becomes sick, death is

Fear And Mass Hysteria In Arthur Miller s The Crucible
Fear in The Crucible Fear is a powerful emotion. It defines humanity. The sole reason humans
continue to progress and invent is due to the fear of the unknown. Humans have feared the unknown
since the beginning of time. Therefore, it is logical that knowledge creates security. In scientifically
ignorant societies such as puritan Salem in 1692, fear runs rampant when dozens of innocent people
are accused of witchcraft and some hanged. In Arthur Miller s famous play
The Crucible, mass hysteria leads to the wrongful accusation and hanging of dozens of Salem citizens
for witchcraft. It also happened in 1962 when 62 textile workers came down with a disease that was
blamed on the bite of a Junebug. When fear becomes widespread and delusional as it has in Salem, it
is not fear anymore; it is mass hysteria, a condition affecting a group of persons, characterized by
excitement or anxiety, irrational behavior or beliefs, or inexplicable symptoms of illness. The human
behavior of mass hysteria is evident in both Arthur Miller s The Crucible and in the modern event The
June Bug Epidemic. The emotional mass hysteria that drives the plot of Arthur Miller s play, The
Crucible, is a wildfire ignited by several sparks in Act 1. As witchcraft first appears, Hale proceeds to
ask Abigail and Tituba questions and Abigail quickly turns the blame on someone else. During the
questioning of Abigail, Hale asks her a question and Abigail s response shocks everyone: HALE. You

Disaster Disasters And Its Impact On A Population
Disasters, at their most basic, arise when hazards have a significant impact on a population. A 7.0
magnitude earthquake that would be a devastating disaster in a densely populated and vulnerable city,
may be a relatively insignificant geologic occurrence when it strikes an unoccupied island chain. Risk
of a disaster is more traditionally calculated by identification of the potential hazard, assess in relation
of likelihood of an event as it relates to the potential impact severity or risk = probability x
impact/loss. (Smith 2013). For preparedness, risk formulas are insufficient in the absence of context
and consideration for social vulnerability, Birkmann (2007) encourages us to shift away from viewing
disasters as large scale events ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Initial results of the digital search showed a predominance of earthquake information (90%), very few
addressing fire (7%) and even fewer addressing both (3%) Additionally, only 8 % of web and mobile
apps allowed for user interaction. (Fagg, Verucci Rickles 2015). The paper based advice we reviewed
varied widely in quality, detail, and accessibility, but most focused on raising awareness of the hazard
and general home based actions for general or single hazard preparedness specifically; minor
acknowledgements of the potential for a subsequent and arising additional hazard (e.g. post
earthquake shut off of gas if there is leak to prevent fire), but none noted the significant link between
the two hazards. There is a further leap between the small fixes that can be enacted by individuals and
those that are more significant or structural changes. These initial findings show a gap that our
research might address.
Yet, despite all of the information that exists, it has been noted that neither public perception of risk
nor perceived knowledge of the hazard and government response arrangements alone are necessarily
correlated to preparedness action either in intention to adopt mitigation measures or in their actual
uptake (Lindell Whitney 2000). Some

The Movie Wit
I found this movie interesting because I agree with what the film implied on how the universal
constant about being a patient is vulnerability and loss of control. In the movie Wit, you get to see
another side of the medical profession that shows disregard for medical humanities. The film tells the
story of an intellectual, Vivian Bearing, being diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer, the treatment,
and how she is stripped of her personal and professional status in the name of being a patient. A major
theme of this film is its portrayal of the human condition in a state of dependency and need by

patient would lengthen their life and allow the trial to continue. The film ended with Jason finding out
that Vivian has died. He immediately calls the resuscitation team and tries reviving her because he still

reflect on what I ve seen in this movie, I can say that, being a medical doctor is not all about the

perspectives to truly understand their patients. This film taught me that saving lives is not merely
preventing their hearts from stopping but letting them acquire the quality of life they need and

not have health insurance. This incident caused the family into the tangled web of means tested social

writer learned that these programs are really not benefiting people they are actually affecting the lives
of many people who are depending on these programs. Marcella and Dave had to make a drastic
change in their life by spending down their assets and drop their income to near poverty level to
receive the help they need due to the American Safety net which is a program to assist with the poor.
Marcella and her family will have to continue to live with these restrictions for the rest of their lives
unable to save for retirement, use tax free college saving for the baby and unable to develop an
emergency fund. They will not be able to enjoy life as a middle class family. In my belief the writer

How Plants Grow Research Paper
Plants have many roles to play. Plants make food and oxygen, they provide shelter for animals, and
they make and preserve soil, and provide useful products for humans. Plants are the only organism
that is able to convert light energy from the sun into food. This process is called photosynthesis. The
food that we eat is produced by plants. Humans need oxygen to live. This oxygen comes from plants.
Oxygen is produced when plants make food. Animals often use plants for their shelter and their food
source. Plants roots help hold the soil together and also help make soil. Plants help humans more than
just the oxygen they produce. They also produce food, fibers, medicines, and energy. Animals and
humans depend greatly on the roles of plants. (1) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First off, the temperature needs to be right. If it is too high or too low it will result in abdominal
development. Flowers and vegetables that grow in different seasons, require a different temperature.
Warm season vegetables and flowers grow best in 60o F, 75o F, and 80o F. Cool season vegetables and
flowers grow best in 50o F and 70o F. Plants require large amounts of sunlight to grow. Indoor light
often does not provide enough intensity. During the hot summer months, plants need at least one half
gallon of water each day. If plants do not receive enough water each day, their roots will dry out and
they will die. Just like humans, plants also need oxygen to survive. They use oxygen for respiration to
carry out their functions. Plants absorb minerals through their roots. They need these minerals to
survive. Some of the specific minerals they need is soil, fertilizer, manure, compost, fertilizer salts.
Finally, plants need support. Their basic support is soil that surrounds their roots. They also have
hydroponically supports that include, strings or stakes.

Security And The OSI Model Essay
Security and the OSI Model Network security is a topic that reaches far beyond the realm of firewalls,

ARP is a simple protocol that was never designed for authentication. Any end station that has access to
the layer two environment can claim any IP address if the proper security measures are not taken. ARP
spoofing or ARP poisoning occurs when an attacker s computer forges its credentials to allow the host
to believe that it is the intended recipient. If the attackers computer forwards all of the data that is to
be sent to the intended host it is very likely that the man in the middle would go undetected. At any
time the attacker can make changes to the data that is forwarded, copy and use the data, or flood the
network with erroneous packets that cause data collisions and effectively bring network traffic to a
halt. The process of wardriving is a new threat that has surfaced with the popularity of 802.11 style
wireless connections. Poor security with these devices allows an attacker virtually unrestricted access
to the data link layer and beyond. It is not very difficult to walk around various areas in a busy
metropolitan area and pick up unsecured wireless signals and gain access to private networks where
the owner has little idea of you presence. The third layer is the network layer. In the network layer
data is routed through various physical networks while traveling to a known host. Information
contained in the network layer allows routers to make decisions on how the data gets to its destination.

Estate plans are designed to protect assets in the event that something happens to you. From creating a

estate plan, you can:
Lower Your Estate Taxes
One of the most obvious reasons to create an estate plan is to lower the taxes incurred by your
beneficiaries. A lawyer can help you use techniques like living trusts to avoid or reduce estate taxes.
As a result, your beneficiaries can inherit more of your estate without sending it in as taxes.
Skip the Costs of Probate Court
In some cases, your estate plan may help your property to skip the probate process entirely. Normally,
your entire property would go through probate court for months as it is distributed between your
beneficiaries. In addition to taking time, this process can be extremely expensive. There are ways to
avoid the costs of probate court, but you would have to make a good estate plan to do so.

Taking a Look at the City of Atlanta
Revenue Trends
With the continued sluggish economy, Atlanta s total revenue projections continue to decline from the
budget dating back to 2010 when the current mayor Kasim Reed took office. The City s property tax
base is the primary component accounting for 40% of the City s general fund revenues. Property tax
revenues have continued to experience declines associated with decreased residential tax bases,
negative reassessments, successful tax appeals and continued weakness in the housing market. The
City has demonstrated a measured response by continuing to budget property tax revenue collection
conservatively. To meet the projections, the collection rate in the proposed budget was set to rise to
98%, up from the previous year s collection rate of 96% (Pendered 2013). Public utility, alcoholic
beverages and other taxes are the second largest revenue source, at 23% resulting from franchise
agreements of the use of the City s right of way in providing public utilities such as

Diction In Birches
Have you ever smelt a certain scent or heard a certain song and it brought a specific memory or
feeling to you? The poem Birches is about Birch trees that the author, Robert Frost, connected to his
childhood. Frost wants the reader to see his vision of the birch trees. In order for Frost to display his
vision he uses elements of style. The reader is able to make the connection that the author is making
between the birch trees and his childhood because of the way the poem is written. Frost uses specific
words for the reader to understand and imagine the scene in front of them. The author presents a
longing tone towards his childhood through the use of diction, imagery, and language. The poet begins
by using diction to reinforce the message

  • 2. Philip K. Dick s Influence On His Writings Philip K. Dick an American author, most renowned for his works in science fiction, played a crucial role in the development of the science fiction media industry today. His inspiration while writing novels was unconventional, and ranged from visitations of a pink beam named 2 3 74, to a special insight of a force outside of our universe which he referred to as Zebra. Philip K. Dick had many influences on his writings such as drug use, Paranoid Personality Disorder, and Schizophrenia. Dick s life left a massive impact on his writings and, throughout his novels, readers are able to observe recurring apocalyptic like settings and the common theme of a totalitarian government, which, together, create insightful social commentaries. Philip K. Dick had several mental illnesses which had heavily influenced his writing. He often reported recurring hallucinations of a pink beam along with other shapes and geometric patterns, as well as claiming that he was living as a persecuted Christian in Rome named Thomas during the first century AD (Aaronson). In addition to his mental illnesses, he had a history of drug use as well as a struggle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It wasn t until around the 1950s to 60s where he went through a really significant creative period (Fisher). Dick claimed to have contact with a force outside of Earth, called Zebra, which sparked his creativity. These visions also inspired him to question and theorize the origins and meanings of the human experience. Dick s claim of having contact with an outside force was likely due to one of his several mental illnesses; however it did give him the motivation he needed to continue writing. During the time of his newfound inspiration, he wrote some of his most famous novels like The Man in the High Castle and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. • 3. The Affordable Care Act And Emergency Medical Services The Affordable Care Act and Emergency Medical Services Each year in the United States approximately 114 million people visit their local Emergency Department (ED), and 16 million of these patients arrive by Emergency Medical Services (EMS). (Board et al.) Health care in America has moved from an individual, fee for service health care system, towards a more integrated healthcare system i.e., The Affordable Care Act (ACA), which is a government controlled healthcare system, and is set up to be a value based payment system. The ACA will expand and transform the roles of EMS within the healthcare system. EMS s ability to survive and thrive in this new era of healthcare, will revolve, in part, on its ability to articulate its value to healthcare providers, healthcare organizations, hospital systems, and payers, as well as patients and family members. (Smith) EMS can thrive in the future, if it embraces change. John F. Kennedy had this to say about change, Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future. (BrainyQuote) In order for EMS to thrive in the changes that the future is bringing, it must: focus on mobile integrated healthcare, be data driven in their clinical practices. There are three other areas that will be discussed at length, EMS agencies should be actively pursuing a community paramedicine program, EMS using remote telemedicine and EMS moving towards a value based payment system. Many of the elements of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Louisiana is 51,843 square miles. The state is divided into north and south Louisiana, but throughout the state the culture is the same. The religion, music, people, areas, food, and language are all very unique to Louisiana. Within Louisiana there are several different religions. Many people from Louisiana are descendants of Europeans and practice Catholicism (Louisiana Creole Culture). According to a study done in 2010, the top five denominations of religion in Louisiana in this order are: Catholic, Southern Baptist, non denomination, United Methodist, and National Baptist convention(Louisiana Religion Statistics). ... Both Creole and Cajun cooking developed in Southern Louisiana but popular in Northern Louisiana too. According to the article Ducote wrote, Creole cooking is city food and Cajun cooking is country food. Both styles use fresh local food, but the preparation is different. Cajun and Creole cuisine is popular throughout to the State of Louisiana. Cajun cooking tends to be more robust and has more spice to it. A lot of Cajuns live off the land and use the natural resources they have in order to survive. They live in the bayou and swamps were fish, shellfish, and wild game are all over the place. The Cajuns did not try to replicate European dishes since they did not have access to the exotic spices and other hard to find ingredients that made up the more complex European dishes. Cajun food was shaped by were they settled. Cajun cooking is simple and most of the dishes can be cooked all in one pot. They had an abundance of wild game, seafood, wild vegetables and herbs in order to make their dishes. Creole cuisine comes from French, Spanish, African, Native American, and Caribbean influences (Louisiana Creole Culture). Creole cooking is all about sauces and the sauces are creamy and full of favors with use of herbs and spices. Creole food represents Louisiana s flair and imagination. Unlike the Cajuns, the Creole people were the upper class and felt they needed to recreate European dishes in order to be happy. Creole cooking is more complex than Cajun. Unlike Cajun cooking, Creole cooking cooks all the ingredients separately and serves them. They were able to afford rare spices and other foods from Europe that were not readily found in Louisiana. • 5. James Joyce s Araby Loss of Innocence in Araby In her story, Araby, James Joyce concentrates on character rather than on plot to reveal the ironies inherent in self deception. On one level Araby is a story of initiation, of a boy s quest for the ideal. The quest ends in failure but results in an inner awareness and a first step into manhood. On another level the story consists of a grown man s remembered experience, for the story is told in retrospect by a man who looks back to a particular moment of intense meaning and insight. As such, the boy s experience is not restricted to youth s encounter with first love. Rather, it is a portrayal of a continuing problem all through life: the incompatibility of the ideal, of the dream ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the young boy cannot apprehend it intellectually, he feels that the street, the town, and Ireland itself have become ingrown, self satisfied, and unimaginative. It is a world of spiritual stagnation, and as a result, the boy s outlook is severely limited. He is ignorant and therefore innocent. Lonely, imaginative, and isolated, he lacks the understanding necessary for evaluation and perspective. He is at first as blind as his world, but Joyce prepares us for his eventual perceptive awakening by tempering his blindness with an unconscious rejection of the spiritual stagnation of his world. The boy s manner of thought is also made clear in the opening scenes. Religion controls the lives of the inhabitants of North Richmond Street, but it is a dying religion and receives only lip service. The boy, however, entering the new experience of first love, finds his vocabulary within the experiences of his religious training and the romantic novels he has read. The result is an idealistic and confused interpretation of love based on quasireligious terms and the imagery of romance. This convergence of two great myths, the Christian with its symbols of hope and sacrifice and the Oriental or romantic with its fragile symbols of heroism and escape, merge to form in his mind an illusory world of mystical and ideal beauty. This convergence, which creates an epiphany for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Where Have You Gone, Joe Dimaggio And Garfunkel s Song... Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio, Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you, (Simon Garfunkel, 1968). This famous song lyric from Simon and Garfunkel s song Mrs. Robinson has sprung up much controversy in America, since it was released in the year 1968. Many tragedies and changes had happened in the years between when Joe DiMaggio retired from his baseball career and when this song was written. People wanted a happier time in the United States, like when Joe DiMaggio was a major icon among the American people. Joe DiMaggio left behind a legacy in the history of America, giving hope to not only Americans, but immigrants as well who were seeking the American dream. He continues to lead MLB players for hitting streaks to this day, he led men in the United States Army Air Forces, and he also established the Joe DiMaggio Children s Hospital Foundation. The lyric that was pulled from the song Mrs. Robinson, may be short but I think it tells a lot about who Joe DiMaggio was as a person and how people viewed him at him at the time. Joe DiMaggio was looked at as an idol when he was playing baseball. People thought that he was the perfect example of the American dream. His parents were Italian immigrants and were very poor, so seeing him become so famous gave many other immigrants a sense of hope for a better life. Between the time that Joe DiMaggio ended his baseball career and the time that the song Mrs. Robinson was written, many things had changed in America over the 17 year ... • 8. Hesitanity In Hamlet In Shakespeare s Hamlet, Hamlet does not succeed to the throne after his father s death, but if he had would he have been a good king? Due to the fact that he was highly educated and clearly controls the people s perception of him very well he would have made a very competent king of Denmark. The one factor holding him back from being the perfect king are his wild emotions about his father s death and mother s quick mariage. Hamlet has been well educated and Shakespeare makes it a point that we know that, mentioning the university of Wittenberg at which Hamlet studied multiple times in act 1 scene 2. There is no doubt that Wittenberg was a respected school in northern Europe. Wittenberg is also significant as it is the university in which Martin Luther taught. By picking this university for Hamlet to attend, Shakespeare could have been alluding to how Hamlet was taught to think critically, challenge the establishment and act definitively, the last of which ... However this is not an accurate depiction of Hamlet, yes he makes mistakes but even with his network of spies he cannot possibly know everything, such as when Claudius convinces Laertes that Hamlet is to blame for his sister s death. His decision to act mad seems incredibly strange but considering the advantages it gave him quite shrewd. While he was acting mad Hamlet was able to move around the castle and say ridiculous things to people to see their reactions, something that would not have been acceptable if everyone knew he was sane. It is part of New York s 15th congressional district, it s known for being the smallest and poorest congressional district in the US. The demographics of Soundview residents has changed over the course of its existence, a trend that occurs for New York City neighborhoods. The Bronx River is at the eastern borders of Soundview, making a great settlement for its first dweller. The natives of the area were the Siwanoy tribe, they were settled along bodies of water near New York City (Jackson, 1995). Therefore, the tribe settled near the Bronx River up until the area became a point of interest for Dutch and English colonization (Jackson, 1995). The title refers to McCourt s mother, Angela; however, the ashes can have several different meanings. The ashes could be related to the destruction of her family and loss of her children: Margaret, Eugene, and Oliver. When they died, Angela was deeply depressed. Throughout the book McCourt mentions that his mother glares toward the ashes falling from her cigarettes. Ashes are associated with death, dust, and cinders. When the family was living in Laman s home they must act like slaves when they want something: Laman says I m a good boy and the bike is mine anytime I want it as long as the chamber pot is empty and I m there to run to the shop for his cigarettes, go to the library for whatever else he wants. He says, you have a great way with a chamber pot. He laughs and Mama stares into the dead ashes of the fireplace (253). Over the following twenty years, however, U.S. China relations have experienced repeated cycles of progress, stalemate, and crisis, with the events in Tiananmen Square in June 1989 the most recent and disruptive example. The stigma behind mental health have lead to symptoms of depression and anxiety, reluctance to seek help, the sense of helplessness and loneliness and many more. In a student athlete, these stress levels are brought upon the individual for multiple reasons. For example, student athletes have to accomplish a certain degree of success both on the playing field and in the classroom (A.P. , Deitrick, J.M. , Reynolds, E. (2016). Maintaining a required average and playing time can become not only physically but mentally exhausting. This literature review will discuss the barriers and facilitators to mental health in student athletes and how the stigmatization of those student athletes who suffer from a mental illness have an impact on their everyday life. Review of Literature Parental, Peer and Coach Pressure It is said that the reason for student athletes experiencing higher stress levels are because of their extensive time demands, pressures to achieve, physical burn out and conflict with teammates, coaches and teachers. • 21. Summary Of Disability And The Justification Of Disability... Douglas C. Baynton argues in his article, Disability and the Justification of Inequality in American History , that the concept of disability is culturally constructed and has been paid little to no attention to throughout history. He also argues that the term disability plays an important role in justifying discriminations against minority groups, based on gender, race, and ethnicity. He states that Disability has functioned historically to justify inequality for disabled people themselves, but it has also done so for women and minority groups. That is, not only has it been considered justifiable to treat disabled people unequally, but the concept of disability has been used to justify discrimination against other groups by attributing disability to them. (Baynton 94) He used women s suffrage, African American freedom, and immigration restriction as examples to show how disability played an essential role in illustrating how minorities who were labeled as disabled were treated with discrimination. As they were labeled with disability, discrimination against them became justifiable, which ultimately proves that discrimination against disabled was thought as justifiable and were looked over. Disability arguments were noticeable during 19th century because it was used to justify slavery and other forms of inequality treatment and discriminations towards African Americans. Brazil s individual national character and rich musical tradition are the result of a profound mingling of races that has been ongoing in the country since the landing of Pedro Alvares Cabral in April 1500. Even before this event the indigenous Indians of Brazil had an already conventional musical culture; they sang in chorus and solo, played horns, whistles, and flutes, and beat out rhythms with foot stamping, beats, hand clapping, rattles, and drums. With the Portuguese invasion came the violin, piano, clarinet, guitar, and tambourine. These were incorporated into the musical forms of modinha, moda, fofa, acalanto, and fado, which were songs of lullaby, sentiment, and dance. The Portuguese also brought religious festivals and pageants such as the bumba meu boi and reisado. • 32. Fear And Mass Hysteria In Arthur Miller s The Crucible Fear in The Crucible Fear is a powerful emotion. It defines humanity. The sole reason humans continue to progress and invent is due to the fear of the unknown. Humans have feared the unknown since the beginning of time. Therefore, it is logical that knowledge creates security. In scientifically ignorant societies such as puritan Salem in 1692, fear runs rampant when dozens of innocent people are accused of witchcraft and some hanged. In Arthur Miller s famous play The Crucible, mass hysteria leads to the wrongful accusation and hanging of dozens of Salem citizens for witchcraft. It also happened in 1962 when 62 textile workers came down with a disease that was blamed on the bite of a Junebug. When fear becomes widespread and delusional as it has in Salem, it is not fear anymore; it is mass hysteria, a condition affecting a group of persons, characterized by excitement or anxiety, irrational behavior or beliefs, or inexplicable symptoms of illness. The human behavior of mass hysteria is evident in both Arthur Miller s The Crucible and in the modern event The June Bug Epidemic. The emotional mass hysteria that drives the plot of Arthur Miller s play, The Crucible, is a wildfire ignited by several sparks in Act 1. Risk of a disaster is more traditionally calculated by identification of the potential hazard, assess in relation of likelihood of an event as it relates to the potential impact severity or risk = probability x impact/loss. The paper based advice we reviewed varied widely in quality, detail, and accessibility, but most focused on raising awareness of the hazard and general home based actions for general or single hazard preparedness specifically; minor acknowledgements of the potential for a subsequent and arising additional hazard (e.g. post earthquake shut off of gas if there is leak to prevent fire), but none noted the significant link between the two hazards. There is a further leap between the small fixes that can be enacted by individuals and those that are more significant or structural changes. These initial findings show a gap that our research might address. • 36. The Movie Wit I found this movie interesting because I agree with what the film implied on how the universal constant about being a patient is vulnerability and loss of control. In the movie Wit, you get to see another side of the medical profession that shows disregard for medical humanities. The film tells the story of an intellectual, Vivian Bearing, being diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer, the treatment, and how she is stripped of her personal and professional status in the name of being a patient. A major theme of this film is its portrayal of the human condition in a state of dependency and need by chronicling Vivian s experimental treatment through first person narrative, the film allows the viewers a peek into the world of a patient suffering ... With Vivian becoming more fearful of the treatment and her future, Susie discusses what end of life options are available. Decisions about the nature of end of life can influence the research objectives; to revive the patient would lengthen their life and allow the trial to continue. The film ended with Jason finding out that Vivian has died. He immediately calls the resuscitation team and tries reviving her because he still sees her has a potential research subject, despite Vivian s decision to have the do not resuscitate . As I reflect on what I ve seen in this movie, I can say that, being a medical doctor is not all about the knowledge of every disease, or the making of a miracle drug. A doctor should see from different perspectives to truly understand their patients. This film taught me that saving lives is not merely preventing their hearts from stopping but letting them acquire the quality of life they need and deserve. As a nursing major, I will keep in mind the moral lessons of this film and will use it as a foundation to treat my future patients, and as to how I want to be treated by my doctors, especially with respect, empathy, and ... Marcella was paralyzed from the chest down. Dave and Marcella did not have health insurance. This incident caused the family into the tangled web of means tested social assistance. The writer even believed she knew much about means tested assistance program. As the writer learned that these programs are really not benefiting people they are actually affecting the lives of many people who are depending on these programs. Marcella and Dave had to make a drastic change in their life by spending down their assets and drop their income to near poverty level to receive the help they need due to the American Safety net which is a program to assist with the poor. Marcella and her family will have to continue to live with these restrictions for the rest of their lives unable to save for retirement, use tax free college saving for the baby and unable to develop an emergency fund. ARP is a simple protocol that was never designed for authentication. Any end station that has access to the layer two environment can claim any IP address if the proper security measures are not taken. ARP spoofing or ARP poisoning occurs when an attacker s computer forges its credentials to allow the host to believe that it is the intended recipient. If the attackers computer forwards all of the data that is to be sent to the intended host it is very likely that the man in the middle would go undetected. At any time the attacker can make changes to the data that is forwarded, copy and use the data, or flood the network with erroneous packets that cause data collisions and effectively bring network traffic to a halt. The process of wardriving is a new threat that has surfaced with the popularity of 802.11 style wireless connections. Poor security with these devices allows an attacker virtually unrestricted access to the data link layer and beyond. It is not very difficult to walk around various areas in a busy metropolitan area and pick up unsecured wireless signals and gain access to private networks where the owner has little idea of you presence. The third layer is the network layer. In the network layer data is routed through various physical networks while traveling to a known host. Information contained in the network layer allows routers to make decisions on how the data gets to its destination. Security ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Taking a Look at the City of Atlanta Revenue Trends With the continued sluggish economy, Atlanta s total revenue projections continue to decline from the budget dating back to 2010 when the current mayor Kasim Reed took office. The City s property tax base is the primary component accounting for 40% of the City s general fund revenues. Property tax revenues have continued to experience declines associated with decreased residential tax bases, negative reassessments, successful tax appeals and continued weakness in the housing market. The City has demonstrated a measured response by continuing to budget property tax revenue collection conservatively. To meet the projections, the collection rate in the proposed budget was set to rise to 98%, up from the previous year s collection rate of 96% (Pendered 2013). Public utility, alcoholic beverages and other taxes are the second largest revenue source, at 23% resulting from franchise agreements of the use of the City s right of way in providing public utilities such as telecommunications, gas and electric and from taxes imposed on businesses operating in the City of Atlanta. Sales tax revenue is the third largest share of general fund revenues accounting for nearly 20% of revenue anticipations.
