Should Undergraduates Specialize Analysis
In the essay titled Should Undergraduates Specialize? Written by Patrick N. Allitt and published in
Reading for Writers, in New York in 2013, the author presents a discussion about the differences of the
United States and The United Kingdom s school systems. Mr. Allit proposes that U.S students should
have a choice between the two school systems.
The essay is was written by Patrick Allitt to present the contrasts in his college experience to that of
his daughter, Frances, who is about to become a freshman at Emory University. The author presents
some of the obviously outward contrasts in their college careers by discussing the differences in
college systems, criterion, cost, curriculum and length of each program. Mr. Allit explains that his
experience at the University of Oxford in England, thirty two years ... Show more content on

The difference in these two systems create a diverse college experience. For Mr. Allit, preparing for
college consisted purely of academic criterion. There was an entrance exam, followed by a personal
interview. Mr. Allit s daughters experience will differ as the expectation for not only academic
criterion, but pre college prep is essential. Frances was encouraged to participate in extracurricular
activities as well as pursue community service, as these would greatly improve her odds into getting
into a University. The author also explains that the cost was significantly different for him, that it will
be for his daughter. Mr. Allit discusses that due to the meritocratic school system he was apart of, each
students tuition was paid in full and grants were given to cover boarding and living expenses. His cost
of college was about $400.00. His daughter on the other hand, being apart of the decentralized system,
is expected to pay approximately $150,000.00 for a college education at an big league school. One of

become larger as of late because of students financial situations. Public universities cost on average

Many middle to lower class families cannot afford to send their kids to school and with Ivy League
schools like Harvard and Princeton giving out generous financial packages to their student, who
mostly come from wealthy background. The poorer students are on the losing end because they are not
given the opportunity for aid. As Terry Hartle, the senior vice president of the American Council of
Education, says, Smart poor kids go to college at the same rate as stupid rich kids. What this is saying
is that the wealthy families have vastly more opportunity to succeed in the college system even though
they have equal or lesser smarts. Well respected schools such as NYU are now admitting students
based on the financial fit not by merit. Through this recent recession the gap for financial aid has
become increasingly large due to the fact that colleges are basing some of their applications by their
financial situation. This in turn creates widening on lower to middle class families who cannot send
their children to school because the cost are too great to bear with large amounts of financial aid. The
wealthy students are not only being accepted to these pricy private universities but are being given

Driving Across The Golden Gate Bridge
Driving across the golden gate bridge is a sight to see. Well it is a site o see if you can see through the
layers of thick fog and if your car sat up high enough you could see out over the bridge. The air was
not freezing, but there was a chill in the breeze that gave me goose bumps. Driving down crooked
roads, and eating the sourdough bread instead of the soup inside it are special memories. It was a few
days in San Francisco last summer that gave me a love for somewhere other than home. Being the
middle child, my parents have always taken the older sibling on trips and so when the opportunity
came around for a trip. The time was 11:00 am. The date was June 3rd, and the destination was San
Francisco. When we arrived at the airport and were waiting to get on the plane the time flew by; 3
hours felt like 30 minutes. I waited anxiously for the plane to take off and when it did, my stomach
turned upside down. I knew there was no turning back now. We landed at the San Francisco airport,
and my parents told me we got a rental car, and I got to pick it out. I chose a slick, deep red Chrysler;
the idea of that car gave me a spring in my step. The first item for sightseeing was Alcatraz. It thrilled
me. I had just spent three trimesters In AP History, and then I got to visit one of those historical places
I had learned about. We had To ride a ferry to Alcatraz, but when we go off the ferry the vivid image
of history was around me. Inside the basement of Alcatraz we were given

The beauty industry, cosmetics in particular, has a bright future as women, no matter whether they live
in big cities or small villages will always need a fully loaded make up pouch in their bag.
The growth in urban cosmetics consumer spending is driven by the increase in spending in terms of
brands. Urban residents tended to be more adventurous and sophisticated, so they tried different
brands. On the other hand, many people in rural areas who had bought three brands last year had now
reduced purchases to two brands or fewer because of higher prices compared to those in urban areas.

Johnny s Poem I Look Into The Mirror
For the poem I look into the mirror, I have chosen to write it from Johnny s perspective, because I felt
like he had one of the most depth histories of any of the characters. He had suffered physical and
mental abuse from his parents and the socs.
The poem attempted to present Johnny s dreadful world and his perception of it, but also how he relies
on the gang for support and love. The images that are trying to be expressed are mainly the horrid
world he lives in, and this is emphasised by the use of similes and alliterations. I used words like tuff
which was a greaser slang term (to look cool or sharp) to accurately write like Johnny, who loved
things that were tuff.
The poetic devices used in this poem was mostly similes and metaphors, ... Show more content on

The effect of this is to talk about how it s a cruel cycle of everlasting violence, where neither side
ultimately wins anything from it.
His empty plates and his parents empty love is compared to get a direct comparison of how both his
parents are devoid of love and his hunger with his parents not giving him enough food. This simile is
really used to highlight the relationship between him and his parents. The alliteration of uncaring and
unsympathetic further enhances the relationship he uses by using two negative adjectives to describe
his parents towards Johnny.
I am fairly pleased with the making of my look into the mirror poem as I attempted to capture the
dysfunctioned world Johnny lives in, in a poetic form. It conveys the pain he suffers on a daily basis
from nearly everyone he associates with barring the greasers, the place he seeks refuge from all of
this.
The part I mainly struggled with was implementing similes, metaphors, and alliterations without
making the poem sound odd or out of place. I tried not to use fancy or complicated worded/structured
sentences as Johnny s vocabulary was fairly

The Death Of Robespierre, Leader Of The Jacobins Essay
Marat was sitting in his bathtub, he received a visitor by the name of Charlotte Corday, who had been
refused admittance earlier in the day. She claimed to have vital information on escaped Girondins and
proceeded to list off the names of the missing Girondins. After he had finished writing out the list,
Corday claimed that he told her, It will not be long before they are guillotined , a statement she later
changed at her trial to, I will shortly have them all guillotined in Paris . With that statement, Corday
retrieved a knife she had brought and plunged it into his chest. Marat cried out in agony saying Aidez
moi, ma chère amie! ( Help me, my dear friend! ) and died. After Marat s death, Maximilien
Robespierre, leader of The Jacobins, was appointed as the head of The Committee of Public Safety on
July 27, 1793. Although Robespierre was a bourgeoisie, he identified with the plight of the sans
culottes and would become their voice as the revolution progressed. It was because of this
representation that he would become a prominent figure at the most radical point in the revolution. He
defended the principle that the rights of man should extend to all men including the poor, and the
slaves in the colonies. Beginning in the spring of 1792 and forward, France was in an upheaval. The
country was involved in foreign wars, civil war and revolt. While revolutionaries were planning a new
government without the king, counter revolutionaries were plotting the

The Shoe-Horn Sonata
Through their effectual and extensive use of distinctly visual elements and techniques, John Misto s
play The Shoe Horn Sonata and the song I was only 19 by Redgum, offer a variety of perceptions of
the world. Distinctively visual elements and techniques assist us to develop an awareness of languages
in other texts and allows us to understand how our perceptions of and relationships with others and the
world are shaped through written, spoken and visual language. The play The Shoe Horn sonata

This song is similar to John Misto s play The Shoe Horn Sonata as both of these text employ distinctly
visual techniques to offer a variety of perspectives on the world, and to convey and create meaning.
Both of these texts focus on the concept of survival and the effects of war. However, The Shoe Horn
Sonata focuses on the effect of a female POW camp, while I was only nineteen focuses on the effects
of fighting on the active soldiers. In this song the audience is presented with an image of the effects of
the war, and become emotionally invested in the story of the protagonist and become emotionally
invested in him as they gain a personal insight into his life after the war. One example of distinctly
visual elements in this song is the use of imagery. This is created so that the audience can form an
image of the events being described and assist in the conveyance of the author s message. This can be
seen in the line ...and there s me in me slouch hat and me SLR and greens . This allows the reader to
visualise the characters. This use of imagery allows the reader to become emotionally invested in the
characters, as they feel like they were there with them. This makes the story seem more realistic.
Another example of this is the line and an Asian orange sunset through the scrub. This is a pun on the
chemical Agent Orange that was used in the war. This makes the song seem more realistic as it
incorporates authentic elements from the war. Therefore, through its use of imager, the song I was

Daylight Savings Time Research Paper
Each year, we set our clocks back an hour in the fall and then move them forward an hour in the
spring. This routine, thought to have been invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, is known as
daylight savings time (DST), and was created behind the thought of candle conservation. If people
simply woke up earlier, they would have more daylight and therefore use less candles. The concept
was adopted by the United States in the twentieth century and is regulated by the federal government
however the concept still has major flaws such as the actual energy conserved, effects on the people,
and the effect on industry. Studies have been done throughout the decades on the actual conservation
of energy in relation to DST. Source C, an excerpt from a book ... Show more content on

Source C stated an event where the American industry had been effected by DST and would have had
to make major changes. As Source C explains, the U.S. airlines raised opposition in response to a 2005
proposed amendment that provided for a two month extension on the DST period. This could not
happen because the proposal would put the airlines significantly out of sync with the time in foreign
countries. At many foreign airports, U.S. carriers had established fixed landing and takeoff time slots
for which they could not make short term changes. Having to keep these slots for the U.S. DST
extension would have caused significant disruption to the airlines schedules and they anticipated the
loss of many millions of dollars due to scheduling problems and lost connections for overseas

The Problem Of Landfill Accident
1. Introduction:
With the rapid growth of population and economic, more and more waste is produced. Landfill is still
the main method of waste disposal. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the United
States has 3091 active landfills and over 10000 old municipal landfills. It was estimated that 265

All landfills will eventually fail and leak leachate into ground and surface water. The fact that landfill
accidents such as fire, explosion and slip occasionally happen makes people show more concern with

Gas migration along with surface and groundwater contamination are the three dominant types of
landfill failure in the survey area. Besides, slope failure and fire occupy 8% and 3% of the total failure
respectively.
Landfill gas is a complex mix of different gases created by the action of microorganisms within a
landfill. Approximately 46% of landfill gas is composed of methane. Most of the rest component is
carbon dioxide. Also there is trace amount of other volatile organic compounds which comprises less
than 1%. The developed pressure, concentration and temperature gradients cause the landfill gas
emissions to the atmosphere vertically and migrations to surrounding soil laterally. Gas migration is an
indicator of landfill failure because landfill gas becomes a threat to environment when emitted into
atmosphere, since both methane and carbon dioxide are greenhouse gases. Also, the trace amount of
other volatile organic compounds can present serious health hazards (Nastev, 2001). Landfill gas will
also pollute land when migrates to surrounding soil.
Surface water contamination Groundwater contamination of landfill because of leachate leakage.
Leachate is aqueous effluent produced as a consequence of rainwater percolation through landfilled
waste, biochemical processes within landfill and the inherent water content of the landfilled waste

The Batch Cultures
Based on the results of the batch cultures, in the previous chapter, the authors decided to investigate
15 g, 25 g, and 35 g of 500 mg/g of 95% LIPC for the in vivo study. Day 0 samples confirmed that
opportunistic bacteria were present. SBEC bacterial concentrations increased linearly (P = 0.008) as
LIPC dose increased but concentrations were similar for 0 and 15 (Table 5.1). As the dose of LIPC
increased the concentration of C. perfringens decreased linearly (P = 0.03). The remaining three
opportunistic bacteria strains, C. difficile, E. coli general, and E. coli K 12, were not significant (P ≥
0.20) across treatments. Numerically, 25 had the lowest concentration of E. coli general, and 0 had the
lowest concentration of C. difficile. Although increasing the dose of LIPC decreased C. perfringens
the observation that increasing the dose also increases SBEC would suggest that there may be no
additional benefit of dosing LIPC above the recommended rate. However, this would also suggest that
the nutraceutical reaches the cecum without being compromised in the stomach during the digestion
process.
Parameters of inflammation, including ESR (P = 0.87) and range of motion (P ≥ 0.24) were not
significant among treatments (Table 5.2). Additionally, all blood work was within normal ranges (data
not shown), suggesting that increasing the dose of LIPC has no negative effect. Interestingly, a
numerical basis suggested that, 35 had the least amount of inflammation detected on the ESR

Reading And Writing On Student Learning
I like that, although our course is about content area reading, it also covers writing, another important
literacy skill. I believe that reading and writing should go hand in hand. Reading can enhance writing
and vice versa. I understand that some teachers consider reading first before writing because of
interpreting reading as a tool to access knowledge and writing as a tool to demonstrate that
knowledge. However, to me, which skill should come first is not as important as the fact that without
one, the other cannot exist.
One writing strategy from this week s reading assignments that I believe will have a great impact on
student learning, even if they are struggling writers, is the six step report writing strategy. Graham,
Harris, MacArthur (2006) stated that the report writing strategy consists of the following steps:
1. Choose a topic.
2. Brainstorm all you know and would like to know about the topic.
3. Organize your ideas by main points and details on a web, where main ideas and subordinate ideas
are linked together through the use of lines and arrows.
4. Read to find new information and verify the accuracy of already generated material (add, delete,
and modify information on the web as necessary).
5. Write your report using information from the web you created, but continue planning as you write.
6. Check to be sure that you used everything you wanted from the web.
According to Graham, Harris, MacArthur (2006), the report writing strategy is taught using the

Frederick Douglass Was An American Abolitionist
Hundreds of years ago, the country we now call the United States of America, was built upon a single
principle; That single principle was freedom. Frederick Douglass was an American abolitionist, a
social reformer who sought to end slavery. Before slavery was abolished in 1865, slaves were not
treated as humans, they were simply seen as property that could be worked to death. Families were
ripped apart, people were working all day long, and humans were being whipped to work faster, this
was the life of a slave. With these tragic events that happened to slaves, Frederick had a goal.
Frederick wanted to abolish slavery once and for all, and for America to acknowledge slavery was a
sin. Frederick had long desired the liberation of all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This causes the audience to think and conclude that he is logically correct. By swaying the audience
with reasoning, he makes the audience believe that they came to the conclusion by themselves. This
further reinforces his argument that blacks are men. After making the audience come to the conclusion
that blacks are equal men, Frederick further expands on why it s wrong to strip them of their rights. He
does this to prevent any counterarguments, from the audience. Soon after demonstrating that blacks
were men, Frederick declares, What, am I to argue that it is wrong to... such arguments would imply, .
Frederick draws this eidetic imagery in the minds of his audience, the torture that slaves have gone
through, and all the work they have done only to be granted nothing. By doing so, Frederick appeals to
the audience s emotions. With this use of pathos the audience can only feel sympathy towards the
slaves, in addition, his use of rhetorical questions make the audience continuously doubt slavery. He
manages to plants these seeds of doubts into the audience s mind. By doing so, the audience begins to
question slavery and start to see the faults within the system. With the combination of pathos and
logos, Frederick s claims were very hard to deny. He had appealed to the audience through reasoning
and emotions. This had

Climate Change Is The Effect On The Planet
Climate Change Who would have ever believed that it has come to this? The Columbia Encyclopedia
(2006) has indicated that Planetary Climate Change is the gradual increase of the temperature of the
earth s atmosphere as a result of the increase in greenhouse gases since the time of the Industrial
Revolution. now, obviously there are some issues with this, and more than a few theories pertaining to
it; all of which relate to the primary culprits of the gases. Things like the burning of fossil fuels, as an
example. Other things like global deforestation, the clearing of huge swaths of Amazon Basin, and
even cattle! Unfortunately, there are a number of conflicting opinions as to whether or not any or all of
these are contributing factors of climate change. One of the major concerns pertaining to climate
change is the effects on the planet. As we, all know, along with the increase in atmospheric surface
temperatures on the earth, the weather begins to alter its patterns and change. This results in some
rather unusual events. The United Nations panel on Climate Change (2007) actually released some
rather disturbing findings. It reported that overall, there has been a considerable increase in the power
of global hurricanes ever since the 1970 s. The Poles are losing more and more of their ice in the
summer months, the North Pole loses almost all of it, glaciers are receding globally, and there is a
noticeable increase in the rising of the oceans...that s only the beginning! Each

Flight Patterns Essay
Sherman Alexie s Flight Patterns tries to tackle a challenging subject. It probes the underbelly of
modern life, sifting through the cloudy American mind that s full of seemingly useless information, in
search of what s truly important in life. This happens through the stories two main scenes. The first
depicts William s relationship with his daughter and wife, and conflicts in life. The second engages
William in a taxi cab conversation that shuffles his priorities and forces him to confront his problem.
This pushes him to his tipping point, and when the ride is over, he becomes uneasy and cares only to
hear his family s voice, not about his job, or the fears that had previously been driving forces. Alexie
is trying to show that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alexie s trying to show us that hiding your problems isn t the correct way to deal with them, and in
William s case, his family needs him more than William needs his job. What exactly is his job? He
works at a think tank selling theoretical ideas to companies. This job plagues William with
ambivalence. Though he s able to think creatively and enjoy certain freedoms that other jobs don t
offer, it restricts the time he has with his family by requires him to fly all over the country. And as he
notes that his wife s always waiting for William to call while on the road, his taxi arrives and William
embarks on the second part of the story. The way I read the taxi cab portion made me think of it as a
quasi mock confession booth, with the driver, Fekadu, serving as the priest. This isn t very clear at the
beginning of the ride when William s trying to meditate and stuff his problems away into his
imaginary deposit box. But once Fekadu gets the conversation rolling, the outpour of emotion starts,
marking an important shift from William hiding problems to trying to face them. After explaining the
feelings that come with leaving his family, causing him sometimes to feel as if he ll explode without
their love, he has an insight that plays into the religious aspect of the taxicab. There is emotional
safety in anonymity, he thought (page 432). And while I m not Catholic, I ve noticed in movies

Examples Of Political Zionism
When it comes to Zionism, it is the belief that the Jews constitute a nation and that they deserve the
rights of other such groups, including the freedom to return to what they consider their ancestral
homeland, the land of Israel. When it comes to Political Zionism, it is the belief that Jews should form
and maintain a state for themselves. Every Jew does not consider themselves a Zionist; some identify
solely with the countries where they are citizens, reject altogether the idea of nationalism. On the other
hand, not every Zionist is a Jew; some Christians believe that the restoration of Jews to Palestine must
precede the second coming of Christ. Political Zionism did not start with much, if any support. Some
called nationalism a form of

What Is The Difference Between Arx And Engel s Theory Of...
arx and Engels believed that the system at work of labor in society created a general alienation of
people from consciousness of their species being ; consciousness of being human. Within this theory
of human alienation, Marx and Engels provide three components from which people are generally
estranged from: the objects of labor, from nature, and from the labor itself. Plato, in contrast, believed
that human alienation lived on the basis of specialization, efficiency, and lack of education. That
people, in Socrates Kallipolis, were generally alienated from the Form of the Truth and Ideas. He
derails from Marx and Engels in the sense that Plato never believed in an inevitable Communist
Revolution, but in a possible political revolution, needed in order to maintain moderation and avoid
the clash of ideas in society. Where Marx and Engels believe in communism for the good of economy,
Socrates believed in communism for the good of the government and his Republic.
Marx and Engels believed that the economy during the Industrial Revolution created a mechanical
system in which people came to be alienated from the reality of being a human being. They argue that
because society is putting in all of its effort to compete with each other so that production becomes a
competition, people lose their sense of living, the sense of themselve, their species being. In the
Communist Manifesto, they argue, The bourgeoisie cannot exist without constantly revolutionising the

The L-shaped Room by Lynne Reid Banks Essay
The L shaped Room by Lynne Reid Banks
The narrator s views of social prejudice are conveyed through the experience of Jane the main
character.
My father and I hadn t said a word to each other when I went home for my things. He s told me to go
and I was going; he didn t care where and so why should I tell him?
The above opening quotation is from The L shaped Room written by
Lynne Reid Banks. It captures an insight into the attitudes of the time. The author mainly focuses on
reflecting the journey Jane faces through her unwanted pregnancy, coping with emotional difficulties
and the dilemmas that face her. I feel the novel made me sympathetic towards Jane, as the novel kept
me captivated; with many twists and turns and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet these neighbours eventually draw her back to life.
At the start of the novel Jane realised it was morally wrong in her society to be pregnant but she tries
to be strong to admit the truth to her father:
I m pregnant I said. These two words shocked even me with their crudeness. I instantly wished I d said
the softer I m going to have a baby. The blunt statement of the biological fact had the same after
echoes as a slap across his face.
The writer has made me feel that Jane thought some weight would ease of her mind by being strong
and telling her father, as he may understand as she is the only child with no mother. However the
sharpness of the truth hits Jane at the same time as she admits the truth because she realises she is in
the situation and she is not generally stating something that will have no affect on her. I think the dash
reveals extra feelings, of how she now feels after admitting the truth but in addition to this the
sentence before and after the dash is a vivid contrast. Before the dash it suggests what she said was
simple and straightforward words but it compares the effect of the words after the dash which shows
the words are shocking. Echoes as a slap across the face shows how forceful the words actually
sounded.
This phrase is a simile which compares her words as being worse than a slap. In my opinion the word
choice of echoes expresses how the admittance of the truth must have been a

Characteristics of Business Leadership
Characteristics of Business Leadership
Steve Jobs, the visionary co founder of Apple who helped usher in the era of personal computers and
then led a cultural transformation in the way music, movies and mobile communications were
experienced in the digital age. Jobs mastered digital technology and capitalized on his intuitive
marketing sense. He largely came to define the personal computer industry and an array of digital
consumer and entertainment businesses centered on the Internet. Coming on the scene just as
computing began to move beyond the walls of research laboratories and corporations in the 1970s, Mr.
Jobs saw that computing was becoming personal, that it could do more than crunch numbers and solve
scientific and business problems and that it could even be a force for social and economic change. And
at a time when hobbyist computers were boxy wooden affairs with metal chassis, he designed a
machine that was a sleek, low slung plastic package intended for the den or the kitchen. He was
offering not just products but a digital lifestyle (Apple s Visionary Redefined Digital Age, 2011).
Steve Jobs was raised in a neighborhood of engineers who worked on electronics and other gadgets in
their garages on weekends. This fashioned his interest in the field as he grew up. When he was 13, he
met one the most important people in his life, Stephen Wozniak. Wozniak was an electronics wiz kid,
and, like Steve, was a persistent prankster. Five years later, Steve Jobs enrolled

The Life of Karl Marx
Karl Marx was one of the greatest thinkers ever. Studying law and philosophy, he became an
important social philosopher and revolutionary. He influenced the lives of millions of people in
generations well past his. A man of mystery in the democratic societies, Karl Marx led an interesting
life of new ideas that would influence millions in the future.
Karl Marx was born on May 5th, 1818 (Karl Marx). He was the eldest son of Heinrich and Hennrietta
Marx. He was born in Trier, Germany. Karl was the oldest surviving boy of nine children (Coser).

On October 15th, 1842, Marx became editor of the Rheinische Zeitung. He was required to write
many editorials from a variety of social issues. He also wrote about the new phenomenon of
communism ( Marx, Karl , Grolier).
On June 19th, 1843, Karl Heinrich Marx was wedded to Jenny von Westphalen. The marriage took
place seven years after their engagement (Marx). Jenny was an attractive, intelligent, and much
admired woman. She was four years older than Karl ( Marx, Karl , Britannica). Karl Marx s wife was
the sister of the women who later became the Prussian Minister of the Interior (Walmsley). Jenny gave
birth to seven children, one dying at birth, leaving six. Their names were Jenny, Laura, Edgar,
Heinrich, Franziska, and Eleanor. Only Jenny, Laura, and Eleanor survived into their teens (Basgen).
After much writing on social problems Karl began to take much interest in communism, which was a
new idea being spread (Walmsley). Marx decided to summarize these ideas into his own book. He
would change the way people lived for years to come. In late 1847 Karl Marx wrote the Manifesto of
the Communist Party, commonly called the Communist Manfesto ( Marx, Karl , Grolier). It covers all
aspects of communism. All communist governments were based off of the Communist Manifesto (
Marx, Karl , Encarta). It consists of four parts; they are Bourgeois and Proletarians , Proletarians and

Claude Of Claude Debussy s Theory Of Russian Composers Of...
Claude Debussy Claude Debussy also known as Achille Claude Debussy has been one of the most
influential composers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Debussy was born into a
middle class family being the son of a shopkeeper and a seamstress and the oldest of his five siblings.
Debussy began his career at the Paris Conservatory at the very young age of 11. During his studies, he
met the wealthy Nadezhda von Meck, a patroness of Tchaikovsky, who employed him to be the music
teacher to her son Nikolai von Meck. Through this Nadezhda von Meck exposed the growing Debussy
to the works of Russian composers, such as Borodin and Mussorgsky, who continue to be significant
influences on his compositions. In 1884, when Debussy was 22 years old, he entered his cantata L
Enfant prodigy also known as The Prodigal Child in the Prix de Rome, a worldwide competition for
composers. Debussy took home the top prize, which allowed him to study for up to three years in the
Italian capital studying at the Villa Medici. Unfortunately, he returned to Paris after only two years.
While he was in Rome, he studied the music of German composer Richard Wagner. Wagner s
influence on Debussy was profound and lasting, but despite this, Debussy shied away from the
ostentation of Wagner s opera in his works. In 1892 at the age mid age of 30, Debussy began to
compose for operas with the start of Pelléas et Mélisande, a play written by Met Erik Satie, a pianist
from Montmartre, which

central Americans face when trying to get into the United States undocumented. These people include
people who have the dream of living in America and creating a new life where they can support their

North America. And have to deal with not only fighting the harsh desert elements, while only caring as
many supplies as they can. They also have to deal with the structural violence that goes under looked
that thousands of Mexicans have to face while migrating to the United States. De Leon s purpose of
this book is to enhance our understanding of the process of undocumented desert migration. Intending
to challenge preconceived notions about what a holistic anthropology can look like and how it can be
deployed in a politically hostile terrain. He does this by showing how productive it can be to sneak
back and forth across the border between accepted discourse and excluded discourse in the name of
generating new knowledge and new forms of cultural understanding. He goes over almost every
aspect about how hard it is for the millions of Mexicans attempting to cross undocumented.

Mr. Allit proposes that U.S students should have a choice between the two school systems. The essay is was written by Patrick Allitt to present the contrasts in his college experience to that of his daughter, Frances, who is about to become a freshman at Emory University. The author presents some of the obviously outward contrasts in their college careers by discussing the differences in college systems, criterion, cost, curriculum and length of each program. The difference in these two systems create a diverse college experience. For Mr. Allit, preparing for college consisted purely of academic criterion. There was an entrance exam, followed by a personal interview. Mr. Allit s daughters experience will differ as the expectation for not only academic criterion, but pre college prep is essential. Frances was encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities as well as pursue community service, as these would greatly improve her odds into getting into a University. The author also explains that the cost was significantly different for him, that it will be for his daughter. Mr. Allit discusses that due to the meritocratic school system he was apart of, each students tuition was paid in full and grants were given to cover boarding and living expenses. His cost of college was about $400.00. His daughter on the other hand, being apart of the decentralized system, is expected to pay approximately $150,000.00 for a college education at an big league school. One of the ... Why California s Tuition Hike Might Be a Good Thing. Freakonomics RSS. Freakonomics, 23 Nov. 2009. Web. 07 Nov. 2014. According to this article the gap in college has become larger as of late because of students financial situations. Public universities cost on average one forth of private universities. Many middle to lower class families cannot afford to send their kids to school and with Ivy League schools like Harvard and Princeton giving out generous financial packages to their student, who mostly come from wealthy background. The poorer students are on the losing end because they are not given the opportunity for aid. As Terry Hartle, the senior vice president of the American Council of Education, says, Smart poor kids go to college at the same rate as stupid rich kids. What this is saying is that the wealthy families have vastly more opportunity to succeed in the college system even though they have equal or lesser smarts. Well respected schools such as NYU are now admitting students based on the financial fit not by merit. Through this recent recession the gap for financial aid has become increasingly large due to the fact that colleges are basing some of their applications by their financial situation. This in turn creates widening on lower to middle class families who cannot send their children to school because the cost are too great to bear with large amounts of financial aid. The wealthy students are not only being accepted to these pricy private universities but are being given grant and aid so that they can make it through. The poorer students are not even given the chance to attend those school not because of their brain but because of their lack of funding. Well it is a site o see if you can see through the layers of thick fog and if your car sat up high enough you could see out over the bridge. The air was not freezing, but there was a chill in the breeze that gave me goose bumps. Driving down crooked roads, and eating the sourdough bread instead of the soup inside it are special memories. It was a few days in San Francisco last summer that gave me a love for somewhere other than home. Being the middle child, my parents have always taken the older sibling on trips and so when the opportunity came around for a trip. The time was 11:00 am. The date was June 3rd, and the destination was San Francisco. When we arrived at the airport and were waiting to get on the plane the time flew by; 3 hours felt like 30 minutes. I waited anxiously for the plane to take off and when it did, my stomach turned upside down. I knew there was no turning back now. We landed at the San Francisco airport, and my parents told me we got a rental car, and I got to pick it out. I chose a slick, deep red Chrysler; the idea of that car gave me a spring in my step. The first item for sightseeing was Alcatraz. It thrilled me. I had just spent three trimesters In AP History, and then I got to visit one of those historical places I had learned about. We had To ride a ferry to Alcatraz, but when we go off the ferry the vivid image of history was around me. Inside the basement of Alcatraz we were given ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Johnny s Poem I Look Into The Mirror For the poem I look into the mirror, I have chosen to write it from Johnny s perspective, because I felt like he had one of the most depth histories of any of the characters. He had suffered physical and mental abuse from his parents and the socs. The poem attempted to present Johnny s dreadful world and his perception of it, but also how he relies on the gang for support and love. The images that are trying to be expressed are mainly the horrid world he lives in, and this is emphasised by the use of similes and alliterations. I used words like tuff which was a greaser slang term (to look cool or sharp) to accurately write like Johnny, who loved things that were tuff. The poetic devices used in this poem was mostly similes and metaphors, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The effect of this is to talk about how it s a cruel cycle of everlasting violence, where neither side ultimately wins anything from it. His empty plates and his parents empty love is compared to get a direct comparison of how both his parents are devoid of love and his hunger with his parents not giving him enough food. This simile is really used to highlight the relationship between him and his parents. The alliteration of uncaring and unsympathetic further enhances the relationship he uses by using two negative adjectives to describe his parents towards Johnny. I am fairly pleased with the making of my look into the mirror poem as I attempted to capture the dysfunctioned world Johnny lives in, in a poetic form. It conveys the pain he suffers on a daily basis from nearly everyone he associates with barring the greasers, the place he seeks refuge from all of this. The part I mainly struggled with was implementing similes, metaphors, and alliterations without making the poem sound odd or out of place. • 10. The Death Of Robespierre, Leader Of The Jacobins Essay Marat was sitting in his bathtub, he received a visitor by the name of Charlotte Corday, who had been refused admittance earlier in the day. She claimed to have vital information on escaped Girondins and proceeded to list off the names of the missing Girondins. After he had finished writing out the list, Corday claimed that he told her, It will not be long before they are guillotined , a statement she later changed at her trial to, I will shortly have them all guillotined in Paris . With that statement, Corday retrieved a knife she had brought and plunged it into his chest. Marat cried out in agony saying Aidez moi, ma chère amie! ( Help me, my dear friend! ) and died. After Marat s death, Maximilien Robespierre, leader of The Jacobins, was appointed as the head of The Committee of Public Safety on July 27, 1793. Although Robespierre was a bourgeoisie, he identified with the plight of the sans culottes and would become their voice as the revolution progressed. It was because of this representation that he would become a prominent figure at the most radical point in the revolution. He defended the principle that the rights of man should extend to all men including the poor, and the slaves in the colonies. Beginning in the spring of 1792 and forward, France was in an upheaval. The country was involved in foreign wars, civil war and revolt. While revolutionaries were planning a new government without the king, counter revolutionaries were plotting the ... Distinctively visual elements and techniques assist us to develop an awareness of languages in other texts and allows us to understand how our perceptions of and relationships with others and the world are shaped through written, spoken and visual language. This song is similar to John Misto s play The Shoe Horn Sonata as both of these text employ distinctly visual techniques to offer a variety of perspectives on the world, and to convey and create meaning. Both of these texts focus on the concept of survival and the effects of war. However, The Shoe Horn Sonata focuses on the effect of a female POW camp, while I was only nineteen focuses on the effects of fighting on the active soldiers. In this song the audience is presented with an image of the effects of the war, and become emotionally invested in the story of the protagonist and become emotionally invested in him as they gain a personal insight into his life after the war. One example of distinctly visual elements in this song is the use of imagery. This is created so that the audience can form an image of the events being described and assist in the conveyance of the author s message. This can be seen in the line ...and there s me in me slouch hat and me SLR and greens . This allows the reader to visualise the characters. This use of imagery allows the reader to become emotionally invested in the characters, as they feel like they were there with them. This makes the story seem more realistic. Another example of this is the line and an Asian orange sunset through the scrub. This is a pun on the chemical Agent Orange that was used in the war. This makes the song seem more realistic as it incorporates authentic elements from the war. Therefore, through its use of imager, the song I was only 19 by Redgum effectively offers a variety of perceptions on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This routine, thought to have been invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, is known as daylight savings time (DST), and was created behind the thought of candle conservation. If people simply woke up earlier, they would have more daylight and therefore use less candles. The concept was adopted by the United States in the twentieth century and is regulated by the federal government however the concept still has major flaws such as the actual energy conserved, effects on the people, and the effect on industry. As Source C explains, the U.S. airlines raised opposition in response to a 2005 proposed amendment that provided for a two month extension on the DST period. This could not happen because the proposal would put the airlines significantly out of sync with the time in foreign countries. At many foreign airports, U.S. carriers had established fixed landing and takeoff time slots for which they could not make short term changes. With the transition from a monarchy to a republic all citizens should have a right to political freedom, and that includes the rights of women. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States has 3091 active landfills and over 10000 old municipal landfills. It was estimated that 265 million metric tons of municipal waste was disposed in the United States in 2013 (Powell, Townsend and Zimmerman, 2015). Gas migration along with surface and groundwater contamination are the three dominant types of landfill failure in the survey area. Besides, slope failure and fire occupy 8% and 3% of the total failure respectively. Landfill gas is a complex mix of different gases created by the action of microorganisms within a landfill. Approximately 46% of landfill gas is composed of methane. Most of the rest component is carbon dioxide. Also there is trace amount of other volatile organic compounds which comprises less than 1%. The developed pressure, concentration and temperature gradients cause the landfill gas emissions to the atmosphere vertically and migrations to surrounding soil laterally. Gas migration is an indicator of landfill failure because landfill gas becomes a threat to environment when emitted into atmosphere, since both methane and carbon dioxide are greenhouse gases. Also, the trace amount of other volatile organic compounds can present serious health hazards (Nastev, 2001). Landfill gas will also pollute land when migrates to surrounding soil. Day 0 samples confirmed that opportunistic bacteria were present. SBEC bacterial concentrations increased linearly (P = 0.008) as LIPC dose increased but concentrations were similar for 0 and 15 (Table 5.1). As the dose of LIPC increased the concentration of C. perfringens decreased linearly (P = 0.03). The remaining three opportunistic bacteria strains, C. difficile, E. coli general, and E. coli K 12, were not significant (P ≥ 0.20) across treatments. Numerically, 25 had the lowest concentration of E. coli general, and 0 had the lowest concentration of C. difficile. Although increasing the dose of LIPC decreased C. perfringens the observation that increasing the dose also increases SBEC would suggest that there may be no additional benefit of dosing LIPC above the recommended rate. • 25. Reading And Writing On Student Learning I like that, although our course is about content area reading, it also covers writing, another important literacy skill. I believe that reading and writing should go hand in hand. Reading can enhance writing and vice versa. I understand that some teachers consider reading first before writing because of interpreting reading as a tool to access knowledge and writing as a tool to demonstrate that knowledge. However, to me, which skill should come first is not as important as the fact that without one, the other cannot exist. One writing strategy from this week s reading assignments that I believe will have a great impact on student learning, even if they are struggling writers, is the six step report writing strategy. Graham, Harris, MacArthur (2006) stated that the report writing strategy consists of the following steps: 1. Choose a topic. 2. Brainstorm all you know and would like to know about the topic. 3. Organize your ideas by main points and details on a web, where main ideas and subordinate ideas are linked together through the use of lines and arrows. 4. Read to find new information and verify the accuracy of already generated material (add, delete, and modify information on the web as necessary). 5. Write your report using information from the web you created, but continue planning as you write. 6. Check to be sure that you used everything you wanted from the web. The Columbia Encyclopedia (2006) has indicated that Planetary Climate Change is the gradual increase of the temperature of the earth s atmosphere as a result of the increase in greenhouse gases since the time of the Industrial Revolution. now, obviously there are some issues with this, and more than a few theories pertaining to it; all of which relate to the primary culprits of the gases. Things like the burning of fossil fuels, as an example. Other things like global deforestation, the clearing of huge swaths of Amazon Basin, and even cattle! Unfortunately, there are a number of conflicting opinions as to whether or not any or all of these are contributing factors of climate change. One of the major concerns pertaining to climate change is the effects on the planet. As we, all know, along with the increase in atmospheric surface temperatures on the earth, the weather begins to alter its patterns and change. This results in some rather unusual events. The United Nations panel on Climate Change (2007) actually released some rather disturbing findings. It reported that overall, there has been a considerable increase in the power of global hurricanes ever since the 1970 s. What Is The Difference Between Arx And Engel s Theory Of... arx and Engels believed that the system at work of labor in society created a general alienation of people from consciousness of their species being ; consciousness of being human. Within this theory of human alienation, Marx and Engels provide three components from which people are generally estranged from: the objects of labor, from nature, and from the labor itself. Plato, in contrast, believed that human alienation lived on the basis of specialization, efficiency, and lack of education. That people, in Socrates Kallipolis, were generally alienated from the Form of the Truth and Ideas. He derails from Marx and Engels in the sense that Plato never believed in an inevitable Communist Revolution, but in a possible political revolution, needed in order to maintain moderation and avoid the clash of ideas in society. Where Marx and Engels believe in communism for the good of economy, Socrates believed in communism for the good of the government and his Republic. The blunt statement of the biological fact had the same after echoes as a slap across his face. The writer has made me feel that Jane thought some weight would ease of her mind by being strong and telling her father, as he may understand as she is the only child with no mother. However the sharpness of the truth hits Jane at the same time as she admits the truth because she realises she is in the situation and she is not generally stating something that will have no affect on her. I think the dash reveals extra feelings, of how she now feels after admitting the truth but in addition to this the sentence before and after the dash is a vivid contrast. Before the dash it suggests what she said was simple and straightforward words but it compares the effect of the words after the dash which shows the words are shocking. Jobs mastered digital technology and capitalized on his intuitive marketing sense. He largely came to define the personal computer industry and an array of digital consumer and entertainment businesses centered on the Internet. Coming on the scene just as computing began to move beyond the walls of research laboratories and corporations in the 1970s, Mr. Jobs saw that computing was becoming personal, that it could do more than crunch numbers and solve scientific and business problems and that it could even be a force for social and economic change. Claude Debussy Claude Debussy also known as Achille Claude Debussy has been one of the most influential composers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Debussy was born into a middle class family being the son of a shopkeeper and a seamstress and the oldest of his five siblings. Debussy began his career at the Paris Conservatory at the very young age of 11. During his studies, he met the wealthy Nadezhda von Meck, a patroness of Tchaikovsky, who employed him to be the music teacher to her son Nikolai von Meck. Through this Nadezhda von Meck exposed the growing Debussy to the works of Russian composers, such as Borodin and Mussorgsky, who continue to be significant influences on his compositions.
