This project aimed to understand how the elderly population in Byker, Newcastle use local services and connect with the community. Students volunteered at local lunch clubs and activities to learn about the experiences and struggles of elderly residents. They used co-design methods like cultural probes and photography to understand what places and services were important. The project mapped local businesses and groups to create a geomedia tool for Age UK to engage more with the community. Currently, they are prototyping a non-digital reward scheme where elderly card holders receive financial benefits for using participating local businesses and Age UK volunteers are also rewarded. The students gained experience in participatory design methods and working on social design projects.
