 To enforce this aesthetic, there would be a sense of decreasing normalcy, as
slowly things become more and more surreal, eventually progressing to the logical
conclusion of barely resembling conventional reality.

or highlight the scene.

 Ordinary actions and lives juxtaposed against an extraordinary setting, i.e.
preparing for dinner with friends while the world is ending. Deep, vibrant colours
for the outside world, contrasting with the muted and more neutral colours within
the residence.
