Faizal’s Problem through Bullying
This is a story about a young boy named Faizal. He
is 9 years old and he needs to deal with weight issue.
Lots of his classmates look down on him because he is
fat and call him names like “ fatty” and “pig” . During
sports day, he can’t join any activities due to his health
problems. He feels even more left out and always
wishes to join the other students to play. Even though
Faizal is a smart boy, he often gets neglected by his
teacher who always pays attention to better looking
students.
Things had gone even worst for him when he was
transferred to lower class only because the teacher
wanted to allow another student who was richer than
Faizal to the first class regardless Faizal’s good results.
One day, as he enters the class, the class’s
rascals start to shout at him and call him
names like they always do. Faizal felt like he
had enough with all the bad treatment he got
and started to beat several of the boys. For
once, he lost control and it had brought him
severe damage. The headmaster called him
and he was suspended from school.
After he endured the punishment, he was
never the same person anymore. Faizal no
longer interested in learning and he became
violent to other students and teachers.
SOLUTION
1)
• According to Dreikurs' Model of Discipline, “All students
want recognition. Most misbehavior results from their
attempts to get it. When frustrated in their attempts to
gain the recognition they desire, their behavior turns
toward four "mistaken goals". Teachers must recognize
and deal effectively with these.”
• In this case, Faizal misbehaves as he was not given the
recognition he wanted from the beginning and this made
him to turn out into a bully.
• Faizal’s teacher should have acknowledge his presence
in the classroom and give him equal the equal attention
given to his other classmates. This gives him a sense of
belonging.
2)
• Faizal’s teacher should have a good rapport with the
students regardless of their social background.
• According to J. Currie (1869) in his book The Effective
Teacher by Lorin W. Anderson (1989:9) stated that
teacher student relationship influences the student’s
ability to involve in classroom activities.
• In order to get the student’s cooperation in the
classroom, the teacher needs to acknowledge all the
students during the teaching and learning in the
classroom.
• Acknowledging the students’ questions and answers will
show that the teacher is interested in them and indirectly
makes the students’ to cooperate in the class teaching
and learning process.
3)
• The naughty students who bullied Faizal should be
punished.
• According to Canter’s Assertive Discipline Model,
punishment can be carried out on students who distracts
the other students attention during the classroom
teaching and learning.
• By doing this, it shows that the teacher treats all the
students equally and this would give Faizal and the other
students a sense of security.
