This year has been difficult with high unemployment, economic instability, and lack of action from Congress to help Americans. However, despite hardship, this holiday season reminds us of human generosity and sacrifice for others. The document goes on to list groups and individuals who are making efforts to advocate for Latinos, pass immigrant protections, improve communities, and help those in need through volunteer work and small businesses. While an exhaustive list is impossible, the overall message is that in difficult times, we all rely on and are grateful for the support and unselfish acts of others in our society.
Gender Equality is when people of all genders have equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities. The main goal of gender equality is for women and men must enjoy equal opportunities, choices, capabilities, power and knowledge as equal citizens.
This document summarizes the programs and services of the Orrville Area United Way located in Orrville, Ohio. It discusses initiatives focused on education, income, health, and anti-human trafficking. Key programs highlighted include the Dolly Parton Imagination Library which provides books to children from birth to age 5, Orrville Reads which matches adult volunteers with students for reading support, and providing free tax preparation assistance to over 150 community members. The document also mentions programs that address food insecurity, poverty, and human trafficking.
Urban poverty is a major challenge in India, with over 93 million slum dwellers. Some key causes of urban poverty in India include corruption, which siphons away funds meant for poverty alleviation programs, and illiteracy, as poverty and lack of education are closely linked. Children in poverty face disadvantages like inadequate access to nutrition, healthcare and education that children from wealthier families do not, making it harder for them to escape the cycle of poverty. Addressing the root causes of corruption and promoting literacy and school quality are important for reducing urban poverty in India on a long-term basis.
The document discusses income inequality in the United States. It provides statistics showing declining incomes for average workers while the wealthiest Americans have greatly increased their wealth. Over the past 42 years, average male and female workers are making much less after adjusting for inflation. The U.S. childhood poverty rate is high compared to other wealthy countries. While the richest 15 Americans gained $170 billion in two years, the bottom 40% of Americans own very little combined wealth. The average middle class family income has declined significantly in 10 years. The document suggests raising awareness of this issue and engaging civically and politically to address income inequality.
Over 50 years after pay discrimination became illegal, women in the US continue to earn just 83 cents for every dollar earned by men. This persistent gender pay gap hurts both women and the national economy. In Washington state, the median annual earnings for women in 2019 was $50,612 compared to $63,988 for men, an earnings ratio of just 79%. With limited action at the federal level, states are taking their own steps to close this gap through new legislation.
Ghost wrote an op-ed for two child care activists -- one an early childhood educator and mom in New Mexico; the other a mom advocate in Michigan -- to share their stories and connect the issue to the upcoming 2020 election.

This document provides information about the Filipino American Legal Defense and Education Fund (FALDEF), a non-profit organization that provides legal services to the Filipino American community. FALDEF's mission is to help Filipino Americans achieve their full potential through litigation, education, and advocacy. It aims to create a vibrant Filipino American community whose members can freely share their talents without fear of unjust treatment. FALDEF provides various legal and educational programs and has represented clients in cases involving immigration, labor, criminal, domestic violence and human trafficking issues. It plans to expand its services by securing funding, collaborating with others, and opening more offices.
The document discusses Catholic social teaching and principles regarding child poverty. It outlines seven principles: 1) life and dignity, 2) family and participation, 3) rights and responsibilities, 4) option for the poor, 5) dignity of work, 6) solidarity, and 7) care for God's creation. It argues that Catholic teachings call on individuals and governments to support human dignity and basic needs for all, especially children in poverty who may lack food, shelter, education and other resources through no fault of their own.
The document discusses the history and ethics of the US welfare system. It begins by imagining being unemployed and facing poverty in America. It then discusses the origins of welfare in the Great Depression and New Deal programs created by FDR to provide relief. The body argues that welfare is necessary to help children in poverty and that denying assistance is unethical, as the US has the resources to ensure no citizens lack basic needs. It concludes by encouraging experimenting with better ways to help the needy through a safety net without creating dependency.

Alfred Santamaria is an immigrant from Colombia who came to Miami at age 11 and has since dedicated himself to public service. He has established several foundations focused on helping vulnerable communities in Miami. Due to the problems he observed through this work, such as high poverty and unemployment, he started a Political Action Committee called Nuevo Liderazgo to address issues in Miami-Dade County and motivate citizens to participate in local elections. The organization proposes solutions such as expanding public transportation, creating jobs through economic development initiatives, and training programs.
Nellie McClung was a Canadian feminist leader in the early 20th century who fought for women's right to vote. She was involved with organizations like the Women's Christian Temperance Union that advocated for women's suffrage and other social reforms. McClung helped defeat the conservative party in Manitoba and achieve women's right to vote across Canada through plays, speeches, and activism. Later, she was part of the "Person's Case" that established women as "persons" under Canadian law who could serve in the Senate. The Association for Women's Rights in Development is an international feminist organization with bases in several countries working to advance women's rights globally.
Women and Children First is a nonprofit organization that provides services to victims of domestic violence in Arkansas, including crisis intervention and shelter. In the last year, the organization housed over 582 individuals and provided services to thousands more. However, it relies heavily on volunteers to run its programs. The top need is attracting and retaining more volunteers. The organization believes recruiting college students could help, as Arkansas ranks high for college volunteer rates. Younger volunteers could help through social media to raise awareness. An effective communication plan is needed to gain more long-term volunteers to help the organization grow.
Captive Daughters is a non-profit organization established in 1997 in California to educate the public and end sex trafficking of women and children through creative media and raising global awareness. It focuses on issues related to the sexual exploitation of women and children, which impacts an estimated 2 million victims trafficked globally each year. The organization was founded to strengthen efforts to address trafficking and supports local organizations working to end it.

At last, an American leader that compares the US with other countries and realizes that our country is not always the land of opportunity for everybody, unless we do something to restore the American dream.
I used this slideshow with my students to help them develop social awareness about inequality.
As women, there are some things that specifically, as the female gender, that we do--or don't do--that tend to prevent us from going as far in our careers as we could.
The organization constructs a safety net of community supports for youth and works with law enforcement and social services to end the commercial sexual exploitation of children. Staff have both professional and personal knowledge of the obstacles youth face and many live in the same neighborhoods. The organization implements programming to meet the changing needs of youth, including educational assistance, life coaching, health services and skills training for those involved in the juvenile justice system. A weekly parent support group aims to help parents navigate the system and support each other. The organization needs financial and moral support to help Boston youth break cycles of violence, poverty, and victimization to achieve successful futures.
Walk to Equality is a group aiming to ensure safety and empowerment of women in India. It addresses issues like corruption, an insecure environment for women, and aims to help weak and insecure groups like women regain their desired status and safety. The document discusses obstacles to women's empowerment like lack of education, domestic violence, and unsafe societies. It proposes safety measures like requiring police travel in vehicles after 6pm and banning curtains in buses at night. Overall, the group works to raise awareness of women's rights and promote gender equality through education, laws against violence, and ensuring women's access to resources and decision making.
The Youth Center helps make the world a better place through various community service activities like weekly soup kitchen visits and food drives. The document summarizes the key findings of the 12th edition of "The State of Working America" published by the Economic Policy Institute. It finds that there has already been a "Lost Decade" of income growth for low and middle-income Americans and another is possible without policy changes. Rising inequality has been the primary barrier to income growth over the last generation. Intentional policy decisions, such as those related to unions, trade, and deregulation, have contributed to increased inequality in wages and incomes.
This document provides an executive summary of the Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness for 2010. The plan sets forth four key goals: 1) End chronic homelessness in 5 years; 2) Prevent and end homelessness among veterans in 5 years; 3) Prevent and end homelessness for families, youth, and children in 10 years; and 4) Set a path to ending all homelessness. The plan is a collaborative effort between 19 federal agencies to better align housing, health, education, and human services programs to prevent homelessness. It identifies 10 objectives and 52 strategies to accomplish the goals, focusing on increasing housing, economic opportunities, health/stability, and improving the homeless crisis response system.
The document summarizes the findings of surveys of non-profits and individuals in Ohio regarding economic struggles and the social safety net. The surveys found that:
1) Non-profits saw large increases (average of 60%) in demand for services like food and shelter from 2008-2011. Many turned clients away due to lack of resources.
2) Individuals reported problems with health care, hunger, and meeting basic needs despite being employed. Over 80% of respondents earned less than $30,000 annually.
3) Both non-profits and individuals supported reforms like increasing funding for social programs, making health care more affordable, expanding job training programs, and raising eligibility levels for assistance.

This document summarizes the key findings and recommendations of a report by the Joint Commission on Mental Health of Children regarding the mental health crisis facing American children and youth. The Commission declares that the US lacks a unified national commitment to children's well-being, does not adequately support families, and has failed to translate knowledge into action to promote healthy development. As a result, millions of children face disadvantages like poverty, racism, lack of access to healthcare and education. The Commission calls for a renewed focus on prevention and ensuring all children's basic rights to care, treatment and reaching their full potential.
4 A Road Map For Americas Future Paul Ryanjenkan04
The document outlines Congressman Paul Ryan's proposal called "A Roadmap for America's Future" which includes reforms to healthcare, Social Security, taxes, and the federal budget. The healthcare section proposes providing tax credits to individuals for purchasing health insurance, creating state-based insurance exchanges, and transitioning Medicaid into a system that provides direct assistance for purchasing private plans. The Social Security reforms give workers under 55 the option to invest some of their payroll taxes into personal retirement accounts. The tax reforms aim to simplify the tax code and reduce rates while eliminating special deductions and broadening the tax base.

1. Mexican law strictly defines citizenship and denies many rights to non-citizens, treating illegal immigration as a felony.
2. Mexican citizenship is primarily derived from birth within Mexican territory or to Mexican-born parents, and dual citizenship is recognized for those born abroad in these circumstances.
3. Gaining Mexican citizenship requires residency in Mexico, passing tests of character and economic independence, while losing citizenship can occur for criminal offenses or aiding foreign governments against Mexico.
The document discusses Congressman Jim Jordan and the Economic Freedom Act, a bill introduced to replace stimulus plans and promote economic recovery through reducing taxes and government spending. The bill would halve the payroll tax for 2010, eliminate the capital gains and death taxes, and lower the corporate tax rate to 12.5% to encourage business growth and job creation. However, the bill currently remains in committee as Democrats are unlikely to allow it to the House floor, but Republicans may support bringing it to a vote if they gain a majority in November. Congressman Tom Rooney also announced his support for the bill, arguing it would help Florida businesses and address the state's high unemployment rates.

This document discusses the history and issues with America's War on Drugs. It began in the 1970s under President Nixon as a law and order issue rather than a health one. The DEA was formed in 1973 to enforce drug laws. Drug use rose in the late 1970s despite these efforts. The war has failed to curb drug use and has negatively impacted minority communities while benefiting private prisons. Alternatives such as decriminalization and treatment are proposed instead of the current punitive approach.

This document discusses strategies for global collaboration in the 21st century. It provides two examples of collaboration at the grassroots level and two examples of collaboration at the global level. The first grassroots example is the Global Giving Foundation, which links donors to small social projects around the world. The second is Ushahidi, a nonprofit that maps reports of violence and has since expanded to track other crises globally. At the global level, it discusses the Japan Platform model of cooperation between NGOs, businesses and government for emergency relief. It also mentions the potential for an Asia Platform to replicate this model of tripartite collaboration.
The document discusses various ways to help address extreme poverty around the world. It notes that over 12% of people in the US live in poverty, compared to over 70% in Congo who suffer from malnutrition. THE SACRIFICE HOW PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS STUDENTS ARE SACRIFICING TO CHANGE T...indexPub
The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.
