The Guns of Amethi: 5 lakh AK-203 rifles
First India Bureau
Lucknow: The Central
government has ap-
provedaplantoproduce
more than five lakh AK-
203 assault rifles at Ko-
rwa in Amethi, in what
official sources de-
scribed as an endeavour
to provide a big boost to
self-reliance in defence
manufacturing. The
proposed pro-
ject reflects
the ever in-
creasing para-
digm shift in defence
acquisition from buy
(global) to Make in In-
dia, they said. This man-
ufacture will be done in
partnership with Rus-
sia and it reflects the
deepening partner-
ship between the
two coun-
tries in
the defence
sector, accord-
ing to the sources in
theCentralgovern-
m e n t .
The project
will provide
business oppor-
tunities to various MS-
MEs and other defence
industries for supply of
raw material and
c o m p o n e n t s ,
which will lead to
generation of new em-
ployment opportuni-
ties. The project marks
a significant stride to-
wards making UP a key
contributor in the de-
fence manufacturing
prowess of India. The
7.62 X 39mm caliber AK-
203 Rifles will replace
in-service INSAS Rifle
inducted over three dec-
ades back. AK-203 As-
sault Rifles, with an ef-
fective range of 300 me-
ters, are lightweight,
robust and easy to use.
The rifles with proven
technology will en-
hance the combat poten-
tial of soldiers to ade-
quately meet present
and envisaged opera-
tional challenges. They
will enhance the opera-
tional effectiveness of
the Indian Army in

Kanpur: Antarashtri-
ya Hindu Parishad
leader Dr Praveen Tog-
adia on Saturday de-
manded a law for the
construction of tem-
ples in Varanasi and
Mathura, apparently
referring to some Hin-
dutva groups’ claim
that places of Hindu
worship once stood at
spots where now
mosques are located.
The demand by him
has come days after
UPDeputy CM Keshav
Prasad Maurya stirred
a controversy by say-
ing that the ruling BJP
is preparing to build a
temple in Mathura.
The supposed temple
site in Mathura, which
is a subject of multiple
lawsuits, is located in-
side an Aurangzeb-era
mosque and shares its
premises with a prom-
inent temple. Stress-
ing his point, Togadia
said the way the gov-
ernment solved the
complex issue of Jam-
mu and Kashmir’s spe-
cial status, it should
“bring a law for the
construction of tem-
ples in Kashi (Varana-
si) and Mathura”. He
told reporters that the
abrogation of Jammu
and Kashmir’s special
status boosted the mo-
rale of patriotic peo-
ple, though terrorism
has not ended.Stress-
ing on bringing terror-
ism in Jammu and
Kashmir to an end, he
said, “We will destroy
the jihad and throw it
in the Jhelum. On be-
ing reminded of his
relations with the PM
in the past, Togadia
said, “After getting
power, old relations
have no meaning. He
now likes Iqbal Ansari
of Babri Masjid.” The
govt will have to crush
the jihad.”
When asked about
chances of Yogi becom-
ing the chief minister
again after the Assem-
bly elections next year,
he said, “In conversa-
tion with some senior
leaders, it emerged
that this time 40 per
cent people who vote
for the BJP will not
vote in its favour. So,
the party will have to
work very hard.”

police all through the

police wanted to go to

In the investigation
so far, the police is con-
sidering the murder to
be carried out under
conspiracy
, as his suspi-

Dr Sushil Kumar,
who lives in Divinity

Dr Sushil was miss-

AJAZ PATEL’S
PERFECT TEN AT
WANKHEDE
CATAPULTS HIM INTO
CRICKET HISTORY
jaz Patel joined a se-
lect group of bowlers
by grabbing all ten
wicketsinIndia’sfirst
innings in the second
Test at Mumbai’s Wankhede sta-
dium. He became only the third
bowler to achieve this feat after
England’s Jim Laker and India’s
Anil Kumble. However, he is the
first bowler of a touring side to
have proved so lethal. Not that it
helped New Zealand as they
were bowled out for their lowest
score against India in their first
innings. But Mumbai-born Pa-
tel’s performance still shone
through his side’s dismal batting
collapse. Patel deservedly got a
standing ovation from the
Wankhede spectators as he led
his side to the pavilion.
He is only the second cricket-
er to have played against India
in his city of birth afterDouglas
Jardine.
For thousands of spectators it
must be a memory to cherish.
Now New Zealand has to ensure
that Patel’s efforts do not go in
vain. It’s tough though.
A
here can’t be a big-
ger embarrass-
ment for Pakistan
than a tweet from
its embassy in
Serbia criticizing Prime Min-
ister Imran Khan over non-
payment of salaries.
The tweet said, “With infla-
tion breaking all previous re-
cords, how long do you expect
@ImranKhanPTI that we of-
ficials will remain silent &
keep working for you without
being paid for the past three
months & our children being
forced out of school due to
non-payment of fees. Is this
#NayaPakistan?” To manage
the situation, the Pakistan
Foreign Office said in a state-
ment that the Twitter, Face-
book and Instagram accounts
of the Embassy of Pakistan
in Serbia have been hacked.
Pakistan Bureau of Statis-
tics data showed that infla-
tion had jumped sharply
from 9.2 percent to 11.5 per-
cent. That apart, Pakistan is
in dire straits financially and
is literally going around with
a begging bowl. To bail out
the cash-strapped country,
Saudi Arabia recently agreed
to park $ 3 billion as loan in
Pakistan’s central bank on
latter’s request. The bailout
comes with a tough condition
that it will have to return the
money within 72 hours of
Saudi request in case of sov-
ereign default. Islamabad
turned to Saudi Arabia out of
desperation as the Interna-
tional Monetary Fund turned
down its borrowing request.
Pakistan has often tee-
tered on the brink and has
been described as a failed
state. Over the years it has
done precious little to
strengthen its economy. Nor
has it taken credible meas-
ures to eliminate terror ha-
vens on its soil. Besides, it
continues to be run under
the shadow of the army and
mullahs and China—perfect
recipe for disaster.

GLOBAL COAL
HYPOCRISY
India has also updated its
nationally determined
contributions, which it must
fulfill by 2030. The country
is now pledging to increase
its installed renewable-
energy capacity to 500
gigawatts, and meet 50% of
its energy requirements
from non-fossil-fuel sources
ndia has somehow emerged
as the villain of last month’s
United Nations Climate
Change Conference (COP26),
blamed for resisting cuts to
coal consumption even as
toxic air envelops its capital,
New Delhi. The country’s
supposed crime in Glasgow
was to join China in insisting
on a last-minute change to
the conference’s final decla-
ration, in which countries
pledged to “phase down”
rather than “phase out” coal.
For that, India, whose per
capita carbon-dioxide emis-
sions are a fraction of those
of the world’s leading emit-
ters, was widely criticized for
obstructing the global fight
against climate change.
The irony is that India has
done far less to intensify the
planet’s greenhouse effect
than either China or the de-
veloped West. True, the coun-
try is a major coal consumer,
and derives about 70% of its
energy from it.
But, as recently as 2015, at
least a quarter of India’s pop-
ulation couldn’t take for
granted what almost every-
one in the developed world
can: to flick a switch on a wall
and be bathed with light.
Worse, Indians are among
the biggest victims of cli-
mate change, periodically
enduring devastating floods
and unseasonal droughts, in
addition to choking on pol-
luted air. Delhi is a poster
child for poor air quality,
which hovers between “se-
vere” and “hazardous” for
much of the year.
The causes include PM2.5
particles emitted from coal-
fired power plants, fumes
from dense traffic, industrial
pollution, and the burning of
crop stubble by farmers in
neighboring states – all com-
bined with winter fog.
But given India’s tradition-
al role as a leading voice of
the developing world, it be-
came the face of the last-min-
ute change of language at
COP26. The “phase down”
wording regarding coal con-
sumption had already ap-
peared in a US-China bilat-
eral climate agreement
signed earlier in the confer-
ence. Nevertheless, India be-
came the focus of global op-
probrium. India does not de-
serve to be the fall guy. For
starters, the country has 17%
of the world’s population but
generates only 7% of global
CO2 emissions. (China, with
18.5% of the world’s people,
generates 27% of emissions,
and the US, with less than 5%
of the world’s population, ac-
counts for 15%.) Whereas
wasteful consumption and
unsustainable energy-guz-
zling are rife in the West,
most Indians live close to the
subsistence level, and many
have no access to energy. To
expect India to meet the tar-
gets that rich countries cur-
rently tout is unfair and im-
practical. Economic develop-
ment – indispensable to pull-
ing millions of Indians out of
poverty – requires energy.
Coal may be polluting, but it
is not feasible for any devel-
oping country to switch rap-
idly to cleaner alternatives
that need scaling up.
Moreover, despite having
vast financial resources and
access to cleaner fossil fuels
such as natural gas (which
India must import), Western
countries have done little to
help. They have failed to keep
climate-finance promises to
poor countries (notably the
$100 billion per year they
committed to provide at
COP15 in Copenhagen in
2009), and refused to transfer
advanced green technolo-
gies. And COP26 singled out
the coal used by developing
countries, not the oil and gas
used extensively in the West.
India’s energy require-
ments are expected to in-
crease faster than those of
any other country in the next
two decades. Since COP21 in
Paris in 2015, India has an-
nounced ambitious plans to
scale up its production and
use of renewable energy,
which currently accounts for
only 18% of its electricity
generation. And at COP26, In-
dia complemented its explicit
commitment to phase down
coal with a pledge to achieve
net-zero emissions by 2070.
India has also updated its
nationally determined contri-
butions, which it must fulfill
by 2030. Country is now pledg-
ing to increase its installed
renewable-energy capacity to
500 gigawatts, and meet 50%
of its energy requirements
from non-fossil-fuel sources.
Furthermore, India aims to
reduce its CO2 emissions by
one billion tons and lower its
emissions intensity (which
measures emissions per unit
of economic growth) by 45%
from 2005 levels.

Dehradun: In a veiled
attack on the Congress-
led UPA government,
Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi on Saturday
said that the infrastruc-
ture development in the
hilly border areas was
nowhere in the policy
strategy of those who
remained in power for
decades.
“Our mountains and
culture are not only our
faith but also the for-
tresses of our country’s
security. We prioritize
ease of living for people
living in the mountains.
Unfortunately, it was
nowhere in the policy
strategy of those who
remained in power for
decades,” PM Modi said
while addressing an
event in Dehradun.
“Previous government
didn’t work on the in-
frastructure of the hilly
border areas as sincere-
ly as they should have.
It was as if they did vow
to demoralize the Army
at all levels. We have im-
plemented one rank,
one pension, given mod-
ern weapons, and a be-
fitting reply to terror-
ists,” the Prime Minis-
ter said.
PM Modi said that be-
tween 2007 and 2014, the
central government
built only 288 km of Na-
tional Highways worth
Rs 600 crore in Uttara-
khand, whereas his gov-
ernment in in last seven
years has constructed

worth Rs 12,000 crore in

laid the foundation
stone for multiple pro-
jects worth around Rs

dun. Speaking on the
occasion, Uttarakhand

Courts should be last resort for

retirement on March 31,
2022, feverish specula-
tions set off about the
probable reasons for
this sudden develop-
ment.
Moreover, when a per-
son is appointed to a
director post of a com-
pany, he is vetted for his
performance and integ-
rity. So the purported
official reason does not
seem to be tenable.
There could be some-
thing more.
One of the more con-
vincing reasons for this
kind of drastic action is
generally irreconcila-
ble policy differences
arising so much not
from policy differences
as from personal and
temperamental prob-
lems. So it may not be
unreasonable to sur-
mise that probably Jain
has put himself in
harm’s way by defying
not only certain in-
structions from the
Ministry but also by go-
ing against the grain of
teamwork. Possibly his
personal feud with his
bosses might have esca-
lated to a point where
the latter had no option
but to call it quits.
It is rumored that Jain,
originally an IRPS cad-
re officer, had issues
with colleagues and su-
periors even at Air In-
dia, where he was
brought as Personnel
Director by former
CMD Rohit Nandan. It
is said that he could not
even gel with Nandan,
his benefactor. He is
also said to have had is-
sues with another for-
mer Air India CMD Lo-
hani who was gracious
enough to ignore his
faultlines in interest of
maintaining spirit of
railway. After making
things hot for himself,
Jain planned and es-
caped to NHPC in 2017.
Everything was going
fine with him there till
his ambition again
drove him to stir trou-
ble for himself as he
could not restrain him-
self from indulging in
‘habitual petty personal
politicking’.
It is said he reached
the breaking point after
failing to get PESB to
select him as CMD. Hav-
ing failed in achieving
his legitimate dream,
he is said to have set
himself into ruinous
course of picking up
quarrels with one and
all. Ministry decided to
part ways with him be-
lieving that he was be-
yond redemption.

Jaipur: BJP has re-
cently lent a major
blow to its old ally
Akali Dal as it broke
Manjinder Singh Sir-
sa, who was pivot of
Akali politics in Del-
hi and got him in-
cluded in saffron
party. Sirsa joining
BJP is a huge event
and this could be
gathered from fact
that Amit Shah got
him included in par-
ty

perception that
through Sirsa, BJP
has challenged Akali
politics in Punjab.
That may be right in
its place but in Pun-
jab BJP will remain a
small ally alliance
will be headed by
Captain Amarinder.
Sirsa has more political
advantage for BJP in
Delhi than in Punjab!
Elections to all 3 mun corps are to be held in Del-
hi at time of Punjab Assembly polls next year.
At present, BJP is in control of all 3 mun corps.
Therefore, winning this is a matter of life and death
for BJP. If AAP wins, it will be a major setback for
BJP as well as for Union HM Amit Shah because
in Delhi now officially govt means Lieutenant Gov-
ernor and Lieutenant Governor works under Union
Home Ministry. The second importance of Sirsa is
that he will help correct BJP’s deteriorating image
among Sikhs due to the farmers’ movement.

COVID UPDATES IN BRIEF!
New Delhi: As calls for Covid-19 vaccine
booster shots grow amid the emergence
of Omicron, the new corona variant, sci-
entists are urging India should prioritize
double vaccinating its eligible population
first so that most people at least get the
base layer of protection against the viral
infection. Many countries have already
started giving booster shots to their
citizens in light of the new strain. India,
however, is yet to consider booster shots
even as several experts in the past few
days have urged for the same.

New Delhi: A picture
of Prime Minister Nar-
endra Modi and former
PM HD Deve Gowda
went very viral recently
on social media, in
which PM Modi is offer-
ing seat to Gowda re-
spectfully. After this
there were speculations
that there could be a
synergy between BJP
and JDS in Karnataka.
However, there is still
time for the Assembly
elections in southern
state as they will be held
in May 2023. Anyway,
the thought of pre-poll
synergy between these
two parties is too far-
fetched. One reason for
this is that former CM
HD Kumaraswamy has
played emotional card
by calling the next elec-
tion his last and wants
to contest on maximum
number of seats.
Another reason for
this is that going with
the BJP and accepting
the leadership of Lin-
gayat leaders BS Yedi-
yurappa and Basavaraj
Bommai would mean
losing the core Vokkali-
ga vote of the JDS. If
the Lingayat leadership
of the BJP considers
Kumaraswamy as the
leader, then Vokkaliga
votes will be given, oth-
erwise not. On the con-
trary, the chances of
this vote going to the
Congress will be strong
as the Congress has ap-
pointed DK Shivaku-
mar, a renowned Vokka-
liga leader who has
challenged the influ-
ence of the Deve Gowda
family
, as the state pres-
ident and he is consid-
ered to be the future
Chief Minister of Kar-
nataka. That’s why the
Deve Gowda family
might not ‘axe it’s feet’.
However, The possibili-
ty of a post-poll allianc-
es cannot be ruled out.
Will there be ‘understanding’
between BJP and JDS?

` 20 LAKH LIFT
INSTALLED TO
REACH FIRST
FLOOR AT DRM
OFFICE
The new lift installed in the DRM
office of Northern Railway
Lucknow Division is now a hot
topic of discussion these days. On
one side, the railway
administration is cutting down on
facilities of the passengers. and at
the same time, with the money
coming out of the pocket of the
passenger, it is preparing an
expensive lift facility. Officials are
getting a new lift worth more than
Rs 20 lakh to reach one floor in
the Lucknow DRM office. A lift of
Rs 20 lakh is not expensive for the
officers who struggle to walk 30
stairs. However, railway staff
leaders are calling it a waste of
money. Senior officers are silent
about this lift. There is no lift to
go to the first floor in the historic
building of the Lucknow DRM
office. Some officers are saying
that the contractors engineering
officers will get relief from the lift.
No matter what happens, the
officers will get the lift installed as
no physically challenged goes in
that department and are making
excuses to get the lift installed.

RLD-SP TO ORGANISE FIRST JOINT
RALLY IN MEERUT ON DECEMBER 7
First India Bureau
Lucknow: The Rash-
triya Lok Dal (RLD) and
Samajwadi Party (SP),
which have entered into
an electoral alliance
will hold their first
joint rally in Meerut on
December 7. The rally is
significant as it is being
organised after the re-
peal of three farm laws
last month and both
these parties had ex-
tended support to the
farmers on the issue.
On November 2 the
BJP had organised a
rally in Saharanpur
which was addressed
by union home minis-
ter Amit Shah and
chief minister Yogi
Adityanath. Being or-
ganised in communally
sensitive regions, the
rally is also likely to in-
dicate the impact of the
alliance at the ground
level. The RLD-SP are
hoping to cash in on the
anger of the farmers.
Even though a formal
announcement about
the seat-sharing be-
tween the RLD and SP
in west UP is yet to be
announced, indications
are that RLD is likely to
contest around 30 seats
in the region. Since the
well-entrenched Jat
community, which was
at the forefront of the
agitation, has once
again come closer to the
RLD headed by Jayant
Chaudhury there seems
to be enthusiasm in the
cadre that the electoral
drought of the last
three elections would
be finally over. The
Bharatiya Kisan Union
(BKU) under the leader-
ship of Rakesh Tikait
and Naresh Tikait,
which has come closer
to RLD during the last
few months has so far
adopted a hostile atti-
tude towards the BJP.
The farmers’ agitation
has also played a key
role in bridging the
communaldividewhich
was caused after the
2013 Muzaffarnagar ri-
ots and its impact was
clear when BJP routed
the entire opposition in
the 2014, 2017 and 2019
elections. Now the Mus-
lim community, which
was cast aside during
the last 8 years, seems to
havere-joinedrankwith
the Jat community to
help boost the electoral
prospects of the RLD-SP
alliance. However, there
are also reports that a
section of the Jat com-
munity is not happy
with RLD’s tie-up with
SP because of its “pro-
Muslim” image.
Thus, discussion also
going round in the re-
gion is that Jats could
support RLD candidates
but not the SP nominees
on seats on their influ-
ence. The farmers in-
volved in the agitation
have however close af-
finity with the RLD than
the SP
. The RLD is basi-
cally known as party of
Jats behind which the
Muslims had thrown
their lot for political sur-
vival over the decades.

heart-wrenching inci-

There was a stir in

was identified. The ac-
cused had switched off

Aligarh: A hooch trag-
edy accused allegedly
died in a jail here,
prompting the authori-
ties to order a judicial
probe after her family
members protested over
the incident. Renu Shar-
ma (41) was rushed to
the Jawaharlal Nehru
Medical College hospi-
tal here on Friday night,
where she was declared
dead on arrival, police
said. She is a former
block pramukh and was
arrested in connection
with the hooch tragedy,
which had claimed sev-
eral lives in the district
earlier this year.
While the officials
put the death figure at
40, unconfirmed reports
claimed that over 100
people died after drink-
ing spurious liquor. A
senior official said a ju-
dicial inquiry has been
ordered into the inci-
dent as her family mem-
bers staged a protest,
demanding fixing ac-
countability of the jail
authorities. Renu’s hus-
band Rishi Sharma, one
of the key accused in
the case, and five other
members of her family
are also lodged in the
Aligarh jail, police said.
Her family members
alleged that the jail au-
thorities did not release
her despite the fact that
she had secured bail on
health grounds earlier
this week. She had been
suffering from a host of
illnesses at the time of
the arrest on May 25.
She was admitted to the
hospital several times
it was only on Thursday
that she had been dis-
charged after being un-
der treatment there for
several days, the family
members alleged. As
soon as the news of
Sharma’s death spread,
her supporters and fam-
ily members gathered at
the city morgue and
raised slogans against
the jail authorities. Her
family members, who
sat on a dharna at the

BRIDGING OF COMMUNAL TENSION
After the alliance and bridging of communal tension,
the Muslims are also quite hopeful that it would help
in winning the elections against the BJP. Though
the Congress had also extended full support to the
farmers stir, the possibility of any electoral dividend
to the party appears to be far-fetched because it is
organisationally quite weak in the region. The role
of AIMIM headed by Assaduddin Owaisi is also be
watched as he has been making efforts to divide
Muslim votes. The MIM is likely to contest Muslim
dominated seats in Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar,
Moradabad and Bijanur in the region.

AMIT SHAH IN JAIPUR
...To launch Mission 2023!

and to launch a highly
‘hopeful’ Mission 2023

‘waiting’ and a crowd
puller Vasundhara

far, in party circles
(and not in public), she
has been perceived as a
side-lined or ignored
leader by the party
highcommand,though
the ground realities
may certainly be a bit
different. In a recent
internal survey held
by the party, Vasund-
hara again emerged as
the tallest and popular
leader among all ‘alter-

so far.
According to sourc-

mand, but if the situa-
tion warrants and

a careful assessment,

properly ‘settling’
(with or without CM

tor, there is no guaran-

in State Assembly, be-
cause in case of a ‘di-
vided house’, a three-
time Congress Chief
Minister and a tower-
ing leader Ashok Ge-
hlot, who is extremely
confident of his fourth
tenure, will have a
smooth sailing in 2023
polls. A smart politi-
cian Gehlot, in re-
sponse to Amit Shah’s
rally has organised a
massive 2 lakh crowd
target Congress really
in Jaipur on December
12 on the issue of price
hike. Initially the rally
was scheduled to be
held in New Delhi but
after New Delhi’s de-
nial to hold the rally on
coronagrounds,aGan-
dhi family loyalist Ge-
hlot has virtually hi-
jacked this rally to
Jaipur, again to show
his skills.
At the moment, on
the face value, during
the last three years, an-
other young Rajput
and Shah confidant,
Jal Shakti Minister
Gajendra Singh Shek-
hawat has been indi-
rectly projected by the
Centre as a Chief Min-
isterial face or a CM
designate candidate
for 2023, but nothing
can be said till Raje fac-
tor is finally ‘sorted
out’. However, Gajen-
dra bana’s travelling
with Shah in the same
BSF plane from Jais-
almer to Jaipur on the
crucial day of the rally
is a clear indication of
his proximity with the
policy maker Shah!
Though, in this en-
tire process, another
grassroots leader from
Hadoti and the present
LS Speaker Om Birla
may also emerge as a
dark horse at the elev-
enth hour. But if the
party, after having a
majority in the House,
decides to bring in a
Jat face at 8, Civil
Lines, then Satish Poo-
nia, a RSS choice, may
be another option. The
impact and influence
of Shah’s presence in
Jaipur is that all the
senior leaders and the
factions of the Saffron
party looked like a sin-
gle and united face
during BJP working
committee meetings
held in Jaipur on Sat-

certain, without properly ‘settling’ (with or
without CM post) Vasundhara factor, there is
no guarantee for a BJP comeback in State As-
sembly
, because in case of a ‘divided house’, a
three-time Congress Chief Minister and a tow-
ering leader Ashok Gehlot, who is extremely
confident of his fourth tenure, will have a
smooth sailing in 2023 polls. Turn to P8

AKHILESH IS ANTI-DALIT,
SAYS RAMAPATI SHASTRI
First India Bureau
Lucknow:UttarPradesh
Social Welfare Minister
Ramapati Shastri has
accused SP President
Akhilesh Yadav of be-
ing anti-Dalit and said
that all the decisions of
the previous govern-
ment bear testimony to
this fact.
Shastri on Saturday
said that no matter how
many statements Akh-
ilesh made in the fa-
vour of Dalits from the
point of view of elec-
tions, but during his
Chief Ministership, he
always worked against
Dalits. The deprived
section of the society
would never forget this
and give a befitting re-
ply in the elections, he
added. Shastri said
Akhilesh Yadav during
his tenure as the CM
had renamed all those
districts which were
named after Dalit icons
great by former CM
Mayawati.
It is noteworthy that
BSPleaderMayawati,in
the capacity of the CM,
had created three new
districts while had de-
cided to change the
names of eight districts
including these. Of
these, Bhimnagar, Pra-
buddhanagar and
Panchsheelnagar came
into existence in 2011,
whose names were
changed by Akhilesh to
Sambhal, Shamli and
Hapur respectively
.
“Not only this, the
changed name of King
George Medical Univer-
sity by Mayawati gov-
ernment to “Chhatrapa-
tiShahujiMaharajMed-
ical University” was
also changed by Akh-
ilesh who restored its
old name again under
SP rule, “pointed out the
minister. Shastri said
during the reign of Akh-
ilesh Yadav, his anti-Dal-
it face had come in front
of everyone.

DECEMBER 12
RALLY: AN
ALBATROSS
AROUND THE
NECK OF
CONGRESS
Ever since Congress
handed over the
reins of the Agitation
Committee to veteran
Digvijay Singh, his re-
bellion has started tak-
ing shape again. One
day suddenly he an-
nounced that the Con-
gress party will hold a
huge rally against infla-
tion in Delhi’s Dwarka
on December 12. After
his announcement, the
Congress’ sleep was
also broken. Rahul
wanted to know what is
rationale for holding a
rally in Delhi now, that
too in Dwarka, neither
the time is favourable,
nor the atmosphere, the
weath-
er and the pollution
both are showing at
peak. If this rally was
held at Ramlila Maidan
in Old Delhi, then the
crowd could have gath-
ered as it is a crowded
area and people also
come walking. Haryana
govt will stop vehicles
from crossing the bor-
der and the Kejriwal
govt of Delhi will also
try its best not to allow
crowds in the rally be-
cause the civic elec-
tions are to be held in
Delhi in two-three
months where AAP is
pushing all its strength.
When both the parties
are face to face in Pun-
jab, Goa, and U’khand,
Gandhi family decided
that rally should be can-
celled for time being. In
such a situation, Ra-
jasthan CM Ashok Ge-
hlot, who appeared on
the scene, suggested to
Sonia-Rahul that the
cancellation of the rally
would not send the
right message to the
party cadre, so Gehlot
hijacked this rally and
scheduled it in Jaipur
where the entire govt
machinery can be
thrown in mobilizing
the crowd. While Ra-
hul’s opinion till the
end was that ‘this rally
should be taken to UP
or Punjab instead of Ra-
jasthan’, but because of
the paucity of time, Ge-
hlot got his point in
front of the high com-
mand. Sonia-Rahul-Pri-
yanka has agreed to
join the rally and clever
Gehlot has targeted
Sachin Pilot’s chances
with this.
A NEW POWER
BROKER HAS
EMERGED IN
DELHI’S
LUTYENS’
ZONE
Defying slogan
‘Na Khaunga
Na Khane Dunga’, a
new power bro-
ker has emerged. He
was once known for res-
taurant business, now
became famous for
food. His house, adja-
cent to a big embassy in
a very posh area of Del-
hi, is becoming famous
these days for spectacu-
lar parties. Parties that
can decide fate of ‘Page
3’ parties. From the
city’s big businessmen,
foreign diplomats, jus-
tices to IAS, IPS and IRS
officers, you can see
them dancing here. Re-
cently, at one of their
parties, Bollywood’s fa-
mous singer Mika mes-
merized audience in
such a way that even
host’s wife also seemed
to lose her rhythm.
IS NITISH CHANGING
COLOURS?
Alot of ruckus was
created in Bihar
polls after an empty bot-
tle of liquor was found
as it made fund of the
‘dry state’. Nitish had
not yet disclosed what
was incident that led
him to implement a liq-
uor ban in Bihar. So,
Nitish has clarified this
secret in the past, that
‘when he was complet-
ing his studies by stay-
ing in Patna, he used to
live in pvt lodge. There
was settlement of poor
around lodge when
they got their salary,
drank wine with meat,
created ruckus in
drunk condition used
to abuse the then PM of
country. On becoming
CM, he tried to give
shape to old resolve. So
much praise for ex-PM
Indira? Can Nitish
change colours in 2024?
DEFECTION
SEASON IN
PUNJAB!
The defection season
has knocked in
Punjab. If sources are
to be believed, then
there are words about a
big leader of Congress,
Sunil Jakhar changing
sides. It is being told
about Jakhar that on
initiative of Captain, he
has been talked about
for several rounds with
BJP top brass. They are
just waiting for notifi-
cation of polls. Bharat
Bhushan, Min for Food
Supplies in Channi’s
cabinet, who was a min-
ister during Captain’s
tenure, is being said to
switch sides with Capt.
WHERE ARE
MANISH TEWARI’S
EYES!
On Thursday, Con-
gress leader Man-
ish Tewari’s famous
book ‘10 Flash Points 20
Years’ was launched in
New Delhi, but surpris-
ingly, veteran Congress
leaders from this cere-
mony made a distance.
Those who came are
included in the impor-
tant faces of G-23 - like
Anand Sharma, Bhu-
pendra Singh Hooda
etc. Janardan Dwivedi
and Pawan Kheda also
came, but there is not
much justification for
their coming or not. But
many prominent lead-
ers of Captain Ama-
rinder camp could be
seen there. What should
be understood from this
is that Tiwari, who con-
stantly targets Dr Man-
mohan Rahul, is the
most adored face of
Captain in Delhi. Ti-
wari’s team does not get
along well with Team
Rahul’s Ajay Maken
and Randeep Surjewa-
la. If Ahmed Patel, who
took Manish forward in
Cong, is no more, can
Manish return in 2024
to show saffron beliefs?
He has old desire to con-
test from Chandigarh.
WHY CONGRESS IS
ON THE TARGET
OF MAMATA?
Congress’s star Ra-
hul Gandhi is not
liked by Mamata Baner-
jee. This quarrel esca-
lated when Rahul made
Mamata’s fiercest oppo-
nent Adhir Ranjan lead-
er of Cong in LS
 also handed
over reins of
Cong in Ben-
gal to him.
Mamata is
unable to di-
gest even Ra-
hul’s friend-
ship with
S i t a r -
am Yechury
. So, in tune
with the BJP, Mamata
also said that ‘Rahul
lives abroad more.’
When Mamata came to
Delhi in July, she only
asked for time to meet
Sonia, but for a while in
that meeting, Rahul
was also present. When
Mamata went to Mum-
bai and met Sharad Pa-
war, she raised ques-
tions on the existence
of the UPA asking
‘Which UPA?’ J’khand
CM Soren is also unable
to refuse UPA as his
govt also has support of
18 Congress MLAs.
Cong and RJD may have
fought separately in Bi-
har by-poll, but Lalu
himself does not ques-
tion existence of UPA.
...AND FINALLY
The new Punjab opin-
ion polls are projecting
a hung Assembly there.
The big players in fray
- Cong, AAP, SAD, BJP
and Amarinder. There
is a tough fight between
Congress and AAP
. SAD
is also in a formidable
contest. Analysts are
telling that if the
picture remains as
it is, then for the
first time AAP and
BJP can come to-
gether, this alli-
ance could also
get support
of BSP

PARSI FIRE TEMPLE
onserving a spe-
cial bond with
nature, the Par-
sis clan leads a
covert life but
with full enthusi-
asm. Parsis are
staunch believers of their
religion and religious be-
liefs. They fear from al-
mighty and wor-
ship fire. Parsis respect
and find all four elements
of nature, i.e., fire, earth,
air, and water, sacred.
Their temple is called Ag-
iary or Fire Temple. One
fine day, I came across an
age-old famous Par-
si Fire Temple that is situ-
ated near the overcrowded
Indian Express building
junction on Queen’s road
in Bengaluru.
To preserve their reli-
gious identity Parsis land-
ed on the South West coast
of Gujarat’s Sanjan town
in the year 716 A.D. At the
time of the Mysore Wadi-
yar dynasty, Parsis were
seen in Karnataka. The
first recorded settlement
of the Parsees in Banga-
lore was in 1880. Parsis mi-
grated to Bengaluru city
and were allowed to follow
their tradition and cus-
tom. The Parsi families
who were working for the
British army settled in the
cantonment area in the
city
. A need to establish an
Anjuman in Bangalore
was felt by the Parsee Zo-
roastriansintheyear1922,
and, they inaugurated the
Bangalore Parsee Zoroas-
trian Anjuman.
Talking about Parsis’s
journey in South India,
one of the Board of Trus-
teesShereyarD.Vakil,Vice
President, The Bangalore
Parsee Zoroastrian Anju-
man in an interview stat-
ed,“ParsiscametoMysore
between 1888 and 1890. Dr.
D.K. Darashaw was the
first practicing Parsi doc-
tor in Mysore. In 1900
there were only 15-20 Par-
si families in Mysore and
then they spread to Banga-
lore. In 1920 there were
about 100 Parsis.”
In 1937, the Zoroastri-
an population of Banga-
lore increased to 300 from
125 in 1925. Vakil informed
that there are now 800
communitymemberswith
roughly 400 to 450 families
of the Parsi clan are resid-
ing in Bengaluru.
With the donation given
by the late Seth Dinshaw
Cawasji, the Bangalore
Parsee Zoroastrian Anju-
man started the construc-
tion of the Agiary
(The Fire Temple) in 1924
in Bengaluru. And,
the temple was consecrat-
ed in the year 1926.
The Fire temple has been
named ‘Bai Dhanmai
Cawasji Dadabhai Dar-E-
Meher’.
Though the fire tem-
ple is enclosed with loads
of vehicle noise and crowd
everywhere,soasIentered
the temple premises, the
peaceful surrounding and
environment inside, en-
tirely transformed my
moodtoconcordandseren-
ity
. The temple is built-in
rare British Iranian archi-
tecturestylewithfireflame
designed cemented pillars
in white and grey colour
giveamystifyingfeeltothe
passers-by
. In the Sanctum
Sanctorum (a holy secret
placetoperformanyritual
or activity) of the fire tem-
ple, there is an eter-
nal fire burning all the
time. An interesting fact is
that only sandalwood is
used to burn the fire. Dur-
ing my visit to the tem-
ple when I tried to enter
inside the temple where
the fire is burning the
priest Faredoon Karkaria
stopped me and stated that
the priest or anyone from
the Parsi community is
only allowed to enter the
Sanctum Sanctorum. I felt
surprised listening to this,
but every community has
its rituals and customs to
follow.
Vakil further said that a
prominent Parsi visitor
Sir Jehangir Kothari of
Karachi and his wife vis-
ited Bangalore in 1923. Ko-
thari’swifepassedawayin
Bangalore city
. On his sub-
sequent visit to the city,
the Parsis requested Sir
Kothari to construct a hall
in the fond memory of his
wife. And, in this vein, an
iconic building the Lady
Jehangir Kothari Memo-
rial Hall was constructed
and presented to the Anju-
man. Now the building is
used for the social gather-
ing of Parsis. In this se-
ries, Parsi B.J.Entee estab-
lished a Parsi Dharamsha-
la or a guest house for Par-
si travellers.
Burial or cremation is
also prohibited in the Par-
si community
. The fa-
mous Parsi Tower of Si-
lence - also, known as the
Dokhma or a well built-in
1940 by the Parsi clan in
the city
. Not to affect
the Zoroastrian way of
disposing of the dead the
Dokhma was constructed.
Here, to prevent the pollu-
tion of earth or fire, the
bodies of the dead are
placed in the Dokhma and
exposed to the sun, and
even for birds to prey
upon.
Subsequently
, as the Zo-
roastrian population of
Bangalore increased,
structures like the Tower
of Silence, the Lady Je-
hangir Kothari Memorial
Hall, the B.J. Entee Dhar-
mashala, and the Kothari
Hall, etc. were added to the
assets of the Anjuman.
A notable effort of the
Anjuman was the con-
struction of a block of
flats in 1967 for the middle-
income group Zoroastri-
an, families, who were
finding it difficult to get
suitable living accommo-
dation at reasonable rents.
Anjuman has also insti-
tuted an Education Fund
to encourage the younger
generation in their pur-
suit of education.
In the end, I can say
that though small in num-
ber the community is
quite active in the city and
doing satisfactory social
work for the Parsi clan.

First India Bureau Kanpur: Antarashtri- ya Hindu Parishad leader Dr Praveen Tog- adia on Saturday de- manded a law for the construction of tem- ples in Varanasi and Mathura, apparently referring to some Hin- dutva groups’ claim that places of Hindu worship once stood at spots where now mosques are located. The demand by him has come days after UPDeputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya stirred a controversy by say- ing that the ruling BJP is preparing to build a temple in Mathura. The supposed temple site in Mathura, which is a subject of multiple lawsuits, is located in- side an Aurangzeb-era mosque and shares its premises with a prom- inent temple. Stress- ing his point, Togadia said the way the gov- ernment solved the complex issue of Jam- mu and Kashmir’s spe- cial status, it should “bring a law for the construction of tem- ples in Kashi (Varana- si) and Mathura”. He told reporters that the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status boosted the mo- rale of patriotic peo- ple, though terrorism has not ended.Stress- ing on bringing terror- ism in Jammu and Kashmir to an end, he said, “We will destroy the jihad and throw it in the Jhelum. On be- ing reminded of his relations with the PM in the past, Togadia said, “After getting power, old relations have no meaning. He now likes Iqbal Ansari of Babri Masjid.” The govt will have to crush the jihad.” When asked about chances of Yogi becom- ing the chief minister again after the Assem- bly elections next year, he said, “In conversa- tion with some senior leaders, it emerged that this time 40 per cent people who vote for the BJP will not vote in its favour. The deceased was identified as Guru Sharan Yadav. Inhiscomplaint,Saty- endra Yadav, son of the deceased, said his father was shot dead by some people on Friday night when he was sleeping in the verandah of their house. Initial investiga- tions revealed land dis- pute could be behind the murder. PTI Mahoba: Three chil- dren with their throat slit and their mother hanging were found at a house in Kulpahad area of the district on Satur- day, the police said. SP Sudha Singh said Sonam (35) was found hanging in a room of her house while bodies of her children--Vishal (11), Aarti (9) and Anjali (7)--were recovered with their throat slit. She said it seems that the throat of the chil- dren was slit using sharp-edged weapons. Additional Superin- tendent of Police Rajen- dra Kumar Gautam said neighbours of Kalyan, the woman’s husband, told the police that a few days ago, there was an argument between Sonam and him. Family members of Sonam helped settle the dispute. Kalyan was being in- terrogated, the SP said. This tool shall be compatible with Ios also very soon. INFIDELITY? There was well thought conspiracy behind incident, believe cops First India Bureau Kanpur: The police have not been able to find the doctor who killed his wife and chil- dren even on the second day. Under the leader- ship of DCP, after trac- ing the last location of the triple murder ac- cused Dr Sushil Singh at Ganga Barrage, the mastermind of this high-profile murder case, divers and water police all through the day searched the Gan- ges but nothing could be found. Although, ac- cording to police sourc- es, he was finally nabbed from Ganga Barrage late in the night, but it was not be- ing officially an- nounced because the police wanted to go to the bottom of the mat- ter. In the investigation so far, the police is con- sidering the murder to be carried out under conspiracy , as his suspi- cion on his wife was be- lieved to be the big rea- son behind this. Dr Sushil Kumar, who lives in Divinity Homes apartment in Kalyanpur, here, had told his brother Sunil a few days ago that he was suffering from de- pression and wanted to kill his wife. Dr Sushil was miss- ing after the murder of wife Chandraprabha, son and daughter in the flat on Friday and had sent a message on mo- bile at 5.30 pm asking his brother to go home. On this, brother Dr Sunil reached his house as soon as he read the message, only to find bodies of wife, son and daughter lying in the room. In the message, Sushil had written to inform the police as he was in depression. Af- ter this the police reached the spot. Police Commissioner Aseem Arun also reached the spot and investigated. Probe has revealed that Dr Sushil re- mained at home till 1:10 pm and then the loca- tion of his phone was found in Mandhana at 6:30 pm, after which it was switched off. Kaly- anpur PS in-charge Ashok Dubey said it was revealed in the statement of brother Dr Sunil and the letters received, that accused Dr Sushil was suffering from depression. But, the whole incident was pointing towards some conspiracy . TOP TWEETS AJAZ PATEL’S PERFECT TEN AT WANKHEDE CATAPULTS HIM INTO CRICKET HISTORY jaz Patel joined a se- lect group of bowlers by grabbing all ten wicketsinIndia’sfirst innings in the second Test at Mumbai’s Wankhede sta- dium. He became only the third bowler to achieve this feat after England’s Jim Laker and India’s Anil Kumble. However, he is the first bowler of a touring side to have proved so lethal. Not that it helped New Zealand as they were bowled out for their lowest score against India in their first innings. But Mumbai-born Pa- tel’s performance still shone through his side’s dismal batting collapse. Patel deservedly got a standing ovation from the Wankhede spectators as he led his side to the pavilion. He is only the second cricket- er to have played against India in his city of birth afterDouglas Jardine. For thousands of spectators it must be a memory to cherish. Now New Zealand has to ensure that Patel’s efforts do not go in vain. It’s tough though. A here can’t be a big- ger embarrass- ment for Pakistan than a tweet from its embassy in Serbia criticizing Prime Min- ister Imran Khan over non- payment of salaries. The tweet said, “With infla- tion breaking all previous re- cords, how long do you expect @ImranKhanPTI that we of- ficials will remain silent & keep working for you without being paid for the past three months & our children being forced out of school due to non-payment of fees. Is this #NayaPakistan?” To manage the situation, the Pakistan Foreign Office said in a state- ment that the Twitter, Face- book and Instagram accounts of the Embassy of Pakistan in Serbia have been hacked. Pakistan Bureau of Statis- tics data showed that infla- tion had jumped sharply from 9.2 percent to 11.5 per- cent. That apart, Pakistan is in dire straits financially and is literally going around with a begging bowl. To bail out the cash-strapped country, Saudi Arabia recently agreed to park $ 3 billion as loan in Pakistan’s central bank on latter’s request. The bailout comes with a tough condition that it will have to return the money within 72 hours of Saudi request in case of sov- ereign default. Islamabad turned to Saudi Arabia out of desperation as the Interna- tional Monetary Fund turned down its borrowing request. Pakistan has often tee- tered on the brink and has been described as a failed state. Over the years it has done precious little to strengthen its economy. Nor has it taken credible meas- ures to eliminate terror ha- vens on its soil. Besides, it continues to be run under the shadow of the army and mullahs and China—perfect recipe for disaster. PAKISTAN IN DIRE FINANCIAL STRAITS Pakistan has often teetered on the brink and has been described as a failed state. Over the years it has done precious little to strengthen its economy T GLOBAL COAL HYPOCRISY India has also updated its nationally determined contributions, which it must fulfill by 2030. The country is now pledging to increase its installed renewable- energy capacity to 500 gigawatts, and meet 50% of its energy requirements from non-fossil-fuel sources ndia has somehow emerged as the villain of last month’s United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), blamed for resisting cuts to coal consumption even as toxic air envelops its capital, New Delhi. The country’s supposed crime in Glasgow was to join China in insisting on a last-minute change to the conference’s final decla- ration, in which countries pledged to “phase down” rather than “phase out” coal. For that, India, whose per capita carbon-dioxide emis- sions are a fraction of those of the world’s leading emit- ters, was widely criticized for obstructing the global fight against climate change. The irony is that India has done far less to intensify the planet’s greenhouse effect than either China or the de- veloped West. True, the coun- try is a major coal consumer, and derives about 70% of its energy from it. But, as recently as 2015, at least a quarter of India’s pop- ulation couldn’t take for granted what almost every- one in the developed world can: to flick a switch on a wall and be bathed with light. Worse, Indians are among the biggest victims of cli- mate change, periodically enduring devastating floods and unseasonal droughts, in addition to choking on pol- luted air. Delhi is a poster child for poor air quality, which hovers between “se- vere” and “hazardous” for much of the year. The causes include PM2.5 particles emitted from coal- fired power plants, fumes from dense traffic, industrial pollution, and the burning of crop stubble by farmers in neighboring states – all com- bined with winter fog. But given India’s tradition- al role as a leading voice of the developing world, it be- came the face of the last-min- ute change of language at COP26. The “phase down” wording regarding coal con- sumption had already ap- peared in a US-China bilat- eral climate agreement signed earlier in the confer- ence. Nevertheless, India be- came the focus of global op- probrium. India does not de- serve to be the fall guy. For starters, the country has 17% of the world’s population but generates only 7% of global CO2 emissions. (China, with 18.5% of the world’s people, generates 27% of emissions, and the US, with less than 5% of the world’s population, ac- counts for 15%.) Whereas wasteful consumption and unsustainable energy-guz- zling are rife in the West, most Indians live close to the subsistence level, and many have no access to energy. To expect India to meet the tar- gets that rich countries cur- rently tout is unfair and im- practical. Economic develop- ment – indispensable to pull- ing millions of Indians out of poverty – requires energy. Coal may be polluting, but it is not feasible for any devel- oping country to switch rap- idly to cleaner alternatives that need scaling up. Moreover, despite having vast financial resources and access to cleaner fossil fuels such as natural gas (which India must import), Western countries have done little to help. They have failed to keep climate-finance promises to poor countries (notably the $100 billion per year they committed to provide at COP15 in Copenhagen in 2009), and refused to transfer advanced green technolo- gies. And COP26 singled out the coal used by developing countries, not the oil and gas used extensively in the West. India’s energy require- ments are expected to in- crease faster than those of any other country in the next two decades. Since COP21 in Paris in 2015, India has an- nounced ambitious plans to scale up its production and use of renewable energy, which currently accounts for only 18% of its electricity generation. And at COP26, In- dia complemented its explicit commitment to phase down coal with a pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. India has also updated its nationally determined contri- butions, which it must fulfill by 2030. Country is now pledg- ing to increase its installed renewable-energy capacity to 500 gigawatts, and meet 50% of its energy requirements from non-fossil-fuel sources. Furthermore, India aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by one billion tons and lower its emissions intensity (which measures emissions per unit of economic growth) by 45% from 2005 levels. PROJECT-SYNDICATE.ORG I SHASHI THAROOR The writer is former UN under-secretary- general and former Union MoS for External Affairs is Congress party MP India’s stance on coal at the recent COP26 climate-change conference drew heavy criticism, but richer Western economies have done little to help developing countries’ green transition. Moreover, when a per- son is appointed to a director post of a com- pany, he is vetted for his performance and integ- rity. So the purported official reason does not seem to be tenable. There could be some- thing more. One of the more con- vincing reasons for this kind of drastic action is generally irreconcila- ble policy differences arising so much not from policy differences as from personal and temperamental prob- lems. So it may not be unreasonable to sur- mise that probably Jain has put himself in harm’s way by defying not only certain in- structions from the Ministry but also by go- ing against the grain of teamwork. Possibly his personal feud with his bosses might have esca- lated to a point where the latter had no option but to call it quits. It is rumored that Jain, originally an IRPS cad- re officer, had issues with colleagues and su- periors even at Air In- dia, where he was brought as Personnel Director by former CMD Rohit Nandan. It is said that he could not even gel with Nandan, his benefactor. He is also said to have had is- sues with another for- mer Air India CMD Lo- hani who was gracious enough to ignore his faultlines in interest of maintaining spirit of railway. After making things hot for himself, Jain planned and es- caped to NHPC in 2017. Everything was going fine with him there till his ambition again drove him to stir trou- ble for himself as he could not restrain him- self from indulging in ‘habitual petty personal politicking’. It is said he reached the breaking point after failing to get PESB to select him as CMD. Hav- ing failed in achieving his legitimate dream, he is said to have set himself into ruinous course of picking up quarrels with one and all. Ministry decided to part ways with him be- lieving that he was be- yond redemption. NHPC director Jain dropped for his poor personal dealings PERFORMANCE VS OVERINDULGENCE Sharat K Verma Jaipur: BJP has re- cently lent a major blow to its old ally Akali Dal as it broke Manjinder Singh Sir- sa, who was pivot of Akali politics in Del- hi and got him in- cluded in saffron party. Sirsa joining BJP is a huge event and this could be gathered from fact that Amit Shah got him included in par- ty . There is a general perception that through Sirsa, BJP has challenged Akali politics in Punjab. That may be right in its place but in Pun- jab BJP will remain a small ally alliance will be headed by Captain Amarinder. Sirsa has more political advantage for BJP in Delhi than in Punjab! Elections to all 3 mun corps are to be held in Del- hi at time of Punjab Assembly polls next year. At present, BJP is in control of all 3 mun corps. Therefore, winning this is a matter of life and death for BJP. If AAP wins, it will be a major setback for BJP as well as for Union HM Amit Shah because in Delhi now officially govt means Lieutenant Gov- ernor and Lieutenant Governor works under Union Home Ministry. The second importance of Sirsa is that he will help correct BJP’s deteriorating image among Sikhs due to the farmers’ movement. The newly labeled fifth variant of concern by WHO, Omicron, has put India on high alert. In view of the new variant, the Union Health Ministry has taken note of the surge in cases, advising states to do the needful in terms of testing, tracking and treating people and also ensure to improve the pace of vac- cination drive. Kavita Pant New Delhi: A picture of Prime Minister Nar- endra Modi and former PM HD Deve Gowda went very viral recently on social media, in which PM Modi is offer- ing seat to Gowda re- spectfully. After this there were speculations that there could be a synergy between BJP and JDS in Karnataka. However, there is still time for the Assembly elections in southern state as they will be held in May 2023. Anyway, the thought of pre-poll synergy between these two parties is too far- fetched. One reason for this is that former CM HD Kumaraswamy has played emotional card by calling the next elec- tion his last and wants to contest on maximum number of seats. Another reason for this is that going with the BJP and accepting the leadership of Lin- gayat leaders BS Yedi- yurappa and Basavaraj Bommai would mean losing the core Vokkali- ga vote of the JDS. If the Lingayat leadership of the BJP considers Kumaraswamy as the leader, then Vokkaliga votes will be given, oth- erwise not. On the con- trary, the chances of this vote going to the Congress will be strong as the Congress has ap- pointed DK Shivaku- mar, a renowned Vokka- liga leader who has challenged the influ- ence of the Deve Gowda family , as the state pres- ident and he is consid- ered to be the future Chief Minister of Kar- nataka. That’s why the Deve Gowda family might not ‘axe it’s feet’. However, The possibili- ty of a post-poll allianc- es cannot be ruled out. Will there be ‘understanding’ between BJP and JDS? The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday told the Supreme Court that polluted air from Pakistan affects the air quality in Delhi, adding that the industries in UP have no role to play in the national capital’s pollution. Senior advocate Ranjit Kumar appearing for the UP government told the Apex Court that Delhi air quality is affected by the polluting air coming from Pakistan. He said the eight-hour operation window is affecting the sugarcane and milk industries in Uttar Pradesh. The CJI-led bench asked the UP counsel to go to teh Commission with the grievance and let them decide on the issue. Apex court asked the Uttar Pradesh government to approach the commission on air quality management with its grievance against the direction that the industries, which was not running on cleaner fuel in NCR, will be allowed to operate for eight hours a day only. A special bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana also took note of measures taken by the Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas on Thursday and asked the Centre, Delhi states in the National Capital Region (NCR) to follow the directions. —First India Bureau ` 20 LAKH LIFT INSTALLED TO REACH FIRST FLOOR AT DRM OFFICE The new lift installed in the DRM office of Northern Railway Lucknow Division is now a hot topic of discussion these days. On one side, the railway administration is cutting down on facilities of the passengers. and at the same time, with the money coming out of the pocket of the passenger, it is preparing an expensive lift facility. Officials are getting a new lift worth more than Rs 20 lakh to reach one floor in the Lucknow DRM office. A lift of Rs 20 lakh is not expensive for the officers who struggle to walk 30 stairs. However, railway staff leaders are calling it a waste of money. Senior officers are silent about this lift. There is no lift to go to the first floor in the historic building of the Lucknow DRM office. Some officers are saying that the contractors engineering officers will get relief from the lift. No matter what happens, the officers will get the lift installed as no physically challenged goes in that department and are making excuses to get the lift installed. — Ahtesham Siddiqui RLD-SP TO ORGANISE FIRST JOINT RALLY IN MEERUT ON DECEMBER 7 First India Bureau Lucknow: The Rash- triya Lok Dal (RLD) and Samajwadi Party (SP), which have entered into an electoral alliance will hold their first joint rally in Meerut on December 7. The rally is significant as it is being organised after the re- peal of three farm laws last month and both these parties had ex- tended support to the farmers on the issue. On November 2 the BJP had organised a rally in Saharanpur which was addressed by union home minis- ter Amit Shah and chief minister Yogi Adityanath. Being or- ganised in communally sensitive regions, the rally is also likely to in- dicate the impact of the alliance at the ground level. The RLD-SP are hoping to cash in on the anger of the farmers. Even though a formal announcement about the seat-sharing be- tween the RLD and SP in west UP is yet to be announced, indications are that RLD is likely to contest around 30 seats in the region. Since the well-entrenched Jat community, which was at the forefront of the agitation, has once again come closer to the RLD headed by Jayant Chaudhury there seems to be enthusiasm in the cadre that the electoral drought of the last three elections would be finally over. The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) under the leader- ship of Rakesh Tikait and Naresh Tikait, which has come closer to RLD during the last few months has so far adopted a hostile atti- tude towards the BJP. The farmers’ agitation has also played a key role in bridging the communaldividewhich was caused after the 2013 Muzaffarnagar ri- ots and its impact was clear when BJP routed the entire opposition in the 2014, 2017 and 2019 elections. Now the Mus- lim community, which was cast aside during the last 8 years, seems to havere-joinedrankwith the Jat community to help boost the electoral prospects of the RLD-SP alliance. However, there are also reports that a section of the Jat com- munity is not happy with RLD’s tie-up with SP because of its “pro- Muslim” image. Thus, discussion also going round in the re- gion is that Jats could support RLD candidates but not the SP nominees on seats on their influ- ence. The farmers in- volved in the agitation have however close af- finity with the RLD than the SP . The RLD is basi- cally known as party of Jats behind which the Muslims had thrown their lot for political sur- vival over the decades. Muzaffarnagar: A case was registered against a woman Head Constable after 578 car- tons of wine were found missing from Kairana Police Station ware- house, officials said on Saturday. Head Consta- ble Taresh Sharma was booked under section 409 (breach of trust by a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code at the order of the Super- intendent of Police. Sharma was held re- sponsible for the miss- ing wine - seized in 12 cases - in an inquiry conducted by Circle Of- ficer Pradeep Singh. The incident came to light when the Head Constable was trans- ferred and during hand- over of the charge to the next incumbent 578 car- tons of wine were found missing. —PTI First India Bureau Agra: The cop who bru- tally killed his own niece and threw the dead body in the field after raping her has been arrested. The ac- cused has confessed to his crime during the police interrogation. On December 2, a heart-wrenching inci- dent came to light in the Malpura police station area of Agra where a girl who came to the wedding ceremony was raped by her own ma- ternal uncle. There was a stir in the police department after the case of cruelty with an innocent came to light SSP Sudhir Kumar formed four teams and began the in- vestigation to arrest the accused. Within 72 hours, the police were able to nab the accused. SP West Satyajit Gupta said that the accused’s handkerchief was found at the spot and with the help of CCTV footage, the accused was identified. The ac- cused had switched off his phone to escape from the police and was even trying to flee from his house. SP West said that the forensic team has gathered all the nec- essary details we are trying to make a strong case against the ac- cused to give him the harshest punishment for his cruelty . Aligarh: A hooch trag- edy accused allegedly died in a jail here, prompting the authori- ties to order a judicial probe after her family members protested over the incident. Renu Shar- ma (41) was rushed to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College hospi- tal here on Friday night, where she was declared dead on arrival, police said. She is a former block pramukh and was arrested in connection with the hooch tragedy, which had claimed sev- eral lives in the district earlier this year. While the officials put the death figure at 40, unconfirmed reports claimed that over 100 people died after drink- ing spurious liquor. A senior official said a ju- dicial inquiry has been ordered into the inci- dent as her family mem- bers staged a protest, demanding fixing ac- countability of the jail authorities. Renu’s hus- band Rishi Sharma, one of the key accused in the case, and five other members of her family are also lodged in the Aligarh jail, police said. Her family members alleged that the jail au- thorities did not release her despite the fact that she had secured bail on health grounds earlier this week. She had been suffering from a host of illnesses at the time of the arrest on May 25. She was admitted to the hospital several times it was only on Thursday that she had been dis- charged after being un- der treatment there for several days, the family members alleged. As soon as the news of Sharma’s death spread, her supporters and fam- ily members gathered at the city morgue and raised slogans against the jail authorities. Her family members, who sat on a dharna at the mortuary, said they would not conduct her lastritesuntilotherfam- ily members, who are in the jail, are released on parole for it. —PTI —REPRESENTATIONAL IMAGE —REPRESENTATIONAL IMAGE The accused in police custody. —REPRESENTATIONAL IMAGE BRIDGING OF COMMUNAL TENSION After the alliance and bridging of communal tension, the Muslims are also quite hopeful that it would help in winning the elections against the BJP. Though the Congress had also extended full support to the farmers stir, the possibility of any electoral dividend to the party appears to be far-fetched because it is organisationally quite weak in the region. The role of AIMIM headed by Assaduddin Owaisi is also be watched as he has been making efforts to divide Muslim votes. The MIM is likely to contest Muslim dominated seats in Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Moradabad and Bijanur in the region. 578 cartons of wine missing from police station, cop booked Man rapes, kills niece in Agra; arrested MAN GETS 10 YEARS’ JAIL FOR RAPING 15-YEAR-OLD NIECE Muzaffarnagar: A Special POCSO Court has sentenced a man to 10 years of impris- onment for raping his 15-year-old niece, court officials said on Saturday. Police had received a tip-off that some suspects were roaming the Modinagar area on a bike which did not bear a numberplate, SP (Rural) Iraj Raja said. A vehicle check- ing drive was launched in the afternoon and a team of the Bhojpur police and the Special Operations Group (SOG) signalled the motorcycle to stop. The suspects, instead, fired at the team and sped away towards Modina- gar, the SP said. The security forces chased and tried to encircle the suspects, whose bike fell down. The duo again fired upon the team. Both the sus- pects were shot at in the retaliatory action, the SP said. Police said the suspects were iden- tified as Kishore alias Shetty, who originally hails from Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh and resides in Modinagar, and Sonu Verma -- a resident of DLF Ankur Vihar in Delhi. Initially the rally was scheduled to be held in New Delhi but after New Delhi’s de- nial to hold the rally on coronagrounds,aGan- dhi family loyalist Ge- hlot has virtually hi- jacked this rally to Jaipur, again to show his skills. At the moment, on the face value, during the last three years, an- other young Rajput and Shah confidant, Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shek- hawat has been indi- rectly projected by the Centre as a Chief Min- isterial face or a CM designate candidate for 2023, but nothing can be said till Raje fac- tor is finally ‘sorted out’. However, Gajen- dra bana’s travelling with Shah in the same BSF plane from Jais- almer to Jaipur on the crucial day of the rally is a clear indication of his proximity with the policy maker Shah! Shastri on Saturday said that no matter how many statements Akh- ilesh made in the fa- vour of Dalits from the point of view of elec- tions, but during his Chief Ministership, he always worked against Dalits. The deprived section of the society would never forget this and give a befitting re- ply in the elections, he added. Shastri said Akhilesh Yadav during his tenure as the CM had renamed all those districts which were named after Dalit icons great by former CM Mayawati. It is noteworthy that BSPleaderMayawati,in the capacity of the CM, had created three new districts while had de- cided to change the names of eight districts including these. Of these, Bhimnagar, Pra- buddhanagar and Panchsheelnagar came into existence in 2011, whose names were changed by Akhilesh to Sambhal, Shamli and Hapur respectively . “Not only this, the changed name of King George Medical Univer- sity by Mayawati gov- ernment to “Chhatrapa- tiShahujiMaharajMed- ical University” was also changed by Akh- ilesh who restored its old name again under SP rule, “pointed out the minister. Juthika Patankar Mritunjay Kumar Narayan DECEMBER 12 RALLY: AN ALBATROSS AROUND THE NECK OF CONGRESS Ever since Congress handed over the reins of the Agitation Committee to veteran Digvijay Singh, his re- bellion has started tak- ing shape again. One day suddenly he an- nounced that the Con- gress party will hold a huge rally against infla- tion in Delhi’s Dwarka on December 12. After his announcement, the Congress’ sleep was also broken. Rahul wanted to know what is rationale for holding a rally in Delhi now, that too in Dwarka, neither the time is favourable, nor the atmosphere, the weath- er and the pollution both are showing at peak. If this rally was held at Ramlila Maidan in Old Delhi, then the crowd could have gath- ered as it is a crowded area and people also come walking. Haryana govt will stop vehicles from crossing the bor- der and the Kejriwal govt of Delhi will also try its best not to allow crowds in the rally be- cause the civic elec- tions are to be held in Delhi in two-three months where AAP is pushing all its strength. When both the parties are face to face in Pun- jab, Goa, and U’khand, Gandhi family decided that rally should be can- celled for time being. In such a situation, Ra- jasthan CM Ashok Ge- hlot, who appeared on the scene, suggested to Sonia-Rahul that the cancellation of the rally would not send the right message to the party cadre, so Gehlot hijacked this rally and scheduled it in Jaipur where the entire govt machinery can be thrown in mobilizing the crowd. While Ra- hul’s opinion till the end was that ‘this rally should be taken to UP or Punjab instead of Ra- jasthan’, but because of the paucity of time, Ge- hlot got his point in front of the high com- mand. Sonia-Rahul-Pri- yanka has agreed to join the rally and clever Gehlot has targeted Sachin Pilot’s chances with this. A NEW POWER BROKER HAS EMERGED IN DELHI’S LUTYENS’ ZONE Defying slogan ‘Na Khaunga Na Khane Dunga’, a new power bro- ker has emerged. He was once known for res- taurant business, now became famous for food. His house, adja- cent to a big embassy in a very posh area of Del- hi, is becoming famous these days for spectacu- lar parties. Parties that can decide fate of ‘Page 3’ parties. From the city’s big businessmen, foreign diplomats, jus- tices to IAS, IPS and IRS officers, you can see them dancing here. Re- cently, at one of their parties, Bollywood’s fa- mous singer Mika mes- merized audience in such a way that even host’s wife also seemed to lose her rhythm. IS NITISH CHANGING COLOURS? Alot of ruckus was created in Bihar polls after an empty bot- tle of liquor was found as it made fund of the ‘dry state’. Nitish had not yet disclosed what was incident that led him to implement a liq- uor ban in Bihar. So, Nitish has clarified this secret in the past, that ‘when he was complet- ing his studies by stay- ing in Patna, he used to live in pvt lodge. There was settlement of poor around lodge when they got their salary, drank wine with meat, created ruckus in drunk condition used to abuse the then PM of country. On becoming CM, he tried to give shape to old resolve. So much praise for ex-PM Indira? Can Nitish change colours in 2024? DEFECTION SEASON IN PUNJAB! The defection season has knocked in Punjab. If sources are to be believed, then there are words about a big leader of Congress, Sunil Jakhar changing sides. It is being told about Jakhar that on initiative of Captain, he has been talked about for several rounds with BJP top brass. They are just waiting for notifi- cation of polls. Bharat Bhushan, Min for Food Supplies in Channi’s cabinet, who was a min- ister during Captain’s tenure, is being said to switch sides with Capt. WHERE ARE MANISH TEWARI’S EYES! On Thursday, Con- gress leader Man- ish Tewari’s famous book ‘10 Flash Points 20 Years’ was launched in New Delhi, but surpris- ingly, veteran Congress leaders from this cere- mony made a distance. Those who came are included in the impor- tant faces of G-23 - like Anand Sharma, Bhu- pendra Singh Hooda etc. Janardan Dwivedi and Pawan Kheda also came, but there is not much justification for their coming or not. But many prominent lead- ers of Captain Ama- rinder camp could be seen there. What should be understood from this is that Tiwari, who con- stantly targets Dr Man- mohan Rahul, is the most adored face of Captain in Delhi. Ti- wari’s team does not get along well with Team Rahul’s Ajay Maken and Randeep Surjewa- la. If Ahmed Patel, who took Manish forward in Cong, is no more, can Manish return in 2024 to show saffron beliefs? He has old desire to con- test from Chandigarh. WHY CONGRESS IS ON THE TARGET OF MAMATA? Congress’s star Ra- hul Gandhi is not liked by Mamata Baner- jee. This quarrel esca- lated when Rahul made Mamata’s fiercest oppo- nent Adhir Ranjan lead- er of Cong in LS also handed over reins of Cong in Ben- gal to him. Mamata is unable to di- gest even Ra- hul’s friend- ship with S i t a r - am Yechury . So, in tune with the BJP, Mamata also said that ‘Rahul lives abroad more.’ When Mamata came to Delhi in July, she only asked for time to meet Sonia, but for a while in that meeting, Rahul was also present. When Mamata went to Mum- bai and met Sharad Pa- war, she raised ques- tions on the existence of the UPA asking ‘Which UPA?’ J’khand CM Soren is also unable to refuse UPA as his govt also has support of 18 Congress MLAs. Cong and RJD may have fought separately in Bi- har by-poll, but Lalu himself does not ques- tion existence of UPA. ...AND FINALLY The new Punjab opin- ion polls are projecting a hung Assembly there. The big players in fray - Cong, AAP, SAD, BJP and Amarinder. There is a tough fight between Congress and AAP . SAD is also in a formidable contest. Analysts are telling that if the picture remains as it is, then for the first time AAP and BJP can come to- gether, this alli- ance could also get support of BSP Capt. PARSI FIRE TEMPLE onserving a spe- cial bond with nature, the Par- sis clan leads a covert life but with full enthusi- asm. Parsis are staunch believers of their religion and religious be- liefs. They fear from al- mighty and wor- ship fire. Parsis respect and find all four elements of nature, i.e., fire, earth, air, and water, sacred. Their temple is called Ag- iary or Fire Temple. One fine day, I came across an age-old famous Par- si Fire Temple that is situ- ated near the overcrowded Indian Express building junction on Queen’s road in Bengaluru. To preserve their reli- gious identity Parsis land- ed on the South West coast of Gujarat’s Sanjan town in the year 716 A.D. At the time of the Mysore Wadi- yar dynasty, Parsis were seen in Karnataka. The first recorded settlement of the Parsees in Banga- lore was in 1880. Parsis mi- grated to Bengaluru city and were allowed to follow their tradition and cus- tom. The Parsi families who were working for the British army settled in the cantonment area in the city . A need to establish an Anjuman in Bangalore was felt by the Parsee Zo- roastriansintheyear1922, and, they inaugurated the Bangalore Parsee Zoroas- trian Anjuman. Talking about Parsis’s journey in South India, one of the Board of Trus- teesShereyarD.Vakil,Vice President, The Bangalore Parsee Zoroastrian Anju- man in an interview stat- ed,“ParsiscametoMysore between 1888 and 1890. Dr. D.K. Darashaw was the first practicing Parsi doc- tor in Mysore. In 1900 there were only 15-20 Par- si families in Mysore and then they spread to Banga- lore. In 1920 there were about 100 Parsis.” In 1937, the Zoroastri- an population of Banga- lore increased to 300 from 125 in 1925. Vakil informed that there are now 800 communitymemberswith roughly 400 to 450 families of the Parsi clan are resid- ing in Bengaluru. With the donation given by the late Seth Dinshaw Cawasji, the Bangalore Parsee Zoroastrian Anju- man started the construc- tion of the Agiary (The Fire Temple) in 1924 in Bengaluru. And, the temple was consecrat- ed in the year 1926. The Fire temple has been named ‘Bai Dhanmai Cawasji Dadabhai Dar-E- Meher’. Though the fire tem- ple is enclosed with loads of vehicle noise and crowd everywhere, soasIentered the temple premises, the peaceful surrounding and environment inside, en- tirely transformed my moodtoconcordandseren- ity . The temple is built-in rare British Iranian archi- tecturestylewithfireflame designed cemented pillars in white and grey colour giveamystifyingfeeltothe passers-by . In the Sanctum Sanctorum (a holy secret placetoperformanyritual or activity) of the fire tem- ple, there is an eter- nal fire burning all the time. An interesting fact is that only sandalwood is used to burn the fire. Dur- ing my visit to the tem- ple when I tried to enter inside the temple where the fire is burning the priest Faredoon Karkaria stopped me and stated that the priest or anyone from the Parsi community is only allowed to enter the Sanctum Sanctorum. I felt surprised listening to this, but every community has its rituals and customs to follow. Vakil further said that a prominent Parsi visitor Sir Jehangir Kothari of Karachi and his wife vis- ited Bangalore in 1923. Ko- thari’swifepassedawayin Bangalore city . On his sub- sequent visit to the city, the Parsis requested Sir Kothari to construct a hall in the fond memory of his wife. And, in this vein, an iconic building the Lady Jehangir Kothari Memo- rial Hall was constructed and presented to the Anju- man. Now the building is used for the social gather- ing of Parsis. In this se- ries, Parsi B.J.Entee estab- lished a Parsi Dharamsha- la or a guest house for Par- si travellers. Burial or cremation is also prohibited in the Par- si community . The fa- mous Parsi Tower of Si- lence - also, known as the Dokhma or a well built-in 1940 by the Parsi clan in the city . Not to affect the Zoroastrian way of disposing of the dead the Dokhma was constructed. Here, to prevent the pollu- tion of earth or fire, the bodies of the dead are placed in the Dokhma and exposed to the sun, and even for birds to prey upon. Subsequently , as the Zo- roastrian population of Bangalore increased, structures like the Tower of Silence, the Lady Je- hangir Kothari Memorial Hall, the B.J. Entee Dhar- mashala, and the Kothari Hall, etc. were added to the assets of the Anjuman. A notable effort of the Anjuman was the con- struction of a block of flats in 1967 for the middle- income group Zoroastri- an, families, who were finding it difficult to get suitable living accommo- dation at reasonable rents. Anjuman has also insti- tuted an Education Fund to encourage the younger generation in their pur- suit of education. In the end, I can say that though small in num- ber the community is quite active in the city and doing satisfactory social work for the Parsi clan.
