Objectives:
At the end of the exercise, the students should be able to:
 use arithmetic operations in writing and executing a PHP program, and
 use the if/else, if/else/if/else and switch statements in writing and executing a PHP program.
Materials:
 Computer with the following installed software:
o WAMPSERVER 2.5
 Apache
 MySQL
 PHP
o Internet Explorer 7 or higher, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox
o Any Text Editor
 Flash drive
Procedures:
Exercise 1 Using PHP Operators
1. Open Notepad Editor. And key in the codes below:
The above code will perform a simple addition of two variable $x and $y. the sum is displayed using
the echo statement. The result should be 16.
Practical Exercise 1 Operators
1. Create a PHP script that will perform the following:
a. Convert Fahrenheit into Celsius and display it as “<Fahrenheit value> degree Fahrenheit is
<Fahrenheit value after conversion> degrees Celsius.”

Exercise 2 Control Structures
1. The code below shows a simple use of if/else statement in PHP. Type and test for your reference.
2. The code above will result “Have a good day!” if the current time is below 18. Otherwise it will
display “Have a good night!”.
On Your Own
1. Using if/else statement, create a PHP script that will check the orders of two (2) strings
alphabetically. The program will display, for example “Banana should be placed after Apple.”
Otherwise, display “Banana is after Apple in the alphabet.”
2. Create a PHP script that will compare two (2) values using if/elseif/else statement. The program
should display like, “A is greater than B”, or “A is equal to B”, otherwise, “A is less than B.”.
3. Using switch statement write a PHP script that will determine the gender (male, female) of the
user. If the user select “male” the program should display “Hello Sir, how can I help you?”. If the
user select “female” the program should display “Hello Ma’am, how can I help you?”.
