BKK16-400A LuvOS and ACPI Compliance Testing
ARM server hardware will be shipping in 2016. An incredible amount of work has been done to get this far -- defining and implementing industry standards used by servers, development and testing of SoCs, and all sorts of Linux kernel work. So, how do we make sure we meet all these industry standards?
To a great extent, we've relied on magical thinking so far. That works, but only for so long. LuvOS and FWTS were created in order to catch many of the problems users have found; in this presentation, we describe how we have started extending FWTS to check for standards compliance, specifically ACPI and the SBBR, and how we can use LuvOS to run FWTS and other test suites so that we can rely on hard data, and not just wishful thinking.
Kernel Recipes 2015: Greybus
Greybus is the name for a new application layer protocol on top of Unipro that controls the Ara Phone from Google. This protocol turns a phone into a modular device, allowing any part of the system to be hotplugged while the phone is running.
This talk will describe what this protocol is, why it was designed, and give the basics for how it works. It will discuss how this is implemented in the Linux kernel, and how it easily bridges existing hardware like USB, I2C, GPIO and others with little to no changes needed to existing kernel drivers.

The CoreSight framework available in the Linux kernel has recently been integrated with the standard Perf trace system, making HW assisted tracing on ARM systems accessible to developers working on a wide spectrum of products. This presentation will start by giving a brief overview of the CoreSight technology itself before presenting the current solution, from trace collection in kernel space to off system trace decoding. To help with the latter part the Open CoreSight Decoding Library (openCSD) is introduced. OpenCSD is an open source library assisting with the decoding of collected trace data. We will see how it is used with the existing perf tools to provide an end-to-end solution for CoreSight trace decoding. The presentation will conclude with trace acquisition and decoding scenarios, along with tips on how to interpret trace information rendered by the perf tools.

User space I/O offers significant speedup potential for data plane and other high-performance applications, but at the high cost of writing and maintaining separate device drivers. Building on the existing kernel mediated device framework originally introduced to support GPUs, net\_mdev extends this support to network I/O, requiring only minor changes to existing kernel drivers. Applications, in turn, need only provide ""mini drivers"" to handle the performance I/O paths in user space while leaving control operations in the kernel.

BKK16-304 The State of GDB on AArch64
AArch64 and ARM GDB ports were added some years ago, but some useful features are still missing. We started to add these features to GDB in 2015 and most of them are already accepted by the GDB mainline.
This presentation will discuss these new added features, such as reverse debugging, tracepoint, and multi-arch debugging, together with some explanations on how does GDB support them in general.
This presentation will also introduce some basic GDB or debugger internal knowledges and also some GDB in-progress projects in which we plan to do and are interested in.

Las16 309 - lua jit arm64 port - status
This document summarizes the status of porting LuaJIT, a just-in-time compiler for the Lua programming language, to the ARM64 architecture. It describes the phases of the porting project, including implementing necessary instruction translation hooks and enabling JIT compilation. Linaro has multiple labs and board farms with varying purposes. This session will start with an overview of each of these, their locations, their focus, etc. It will then provide examples and direction on how a Member can add their hardware to a board farm. It will also provide an overview of how a Member or employee can navigate/leverage/check out a board for experimentation and usage (this varies based upon which lab/board farm is being considered, so all will be reviewed) in each of the farm locations. Emerging Persistent Memory Hardware and ZUFS - PM-based File Systems in User ...
In this talk, Dr. Amit Golander looks into emerging PM/NVDIMM devices, the value they bring to applications and most importantly how they revolutionize the storage stack.
In the second part, Boaz Harrosh and Shachar Sharon dive into new opportunities to develop memory-based filesystems in user space, leveraging a new open source project called ZUFS. ZUFS was presented in the last Linux Plumbers conference and unlike FUSE it focuses on delivering low latency and zero copy.
Dr. Amit Golander was the CTO of Plexistor, which developed the first enterprise-grade PM-based file system, and which was acquired earlier this year by NetApp.

This document discusses challenges in system-on-chip (SoC) architectures and proposes using existing Linux frameworks to manage network-on-chip (NoC) interconnects. It outlines using the consumer-provider model to represent NoCs, describing topologies and endpoints in device trees, setting constraints between devices with PMQoS, and triggering updates through runtime power management. The goal is to leverage existing Linux infrastructure for controlling NoCs and improving performance, predictability and quality of service.
BKK16-410 SoC Idling & CPU Cluster PM
The linux kernel has two distinct ways of managing idle. The CPUidle framework for CPUs and for all other devices: runtime PM combined with generic power domains (genpd). In addition, CPUidle is not scaling well for multi-cluster SMP systems and heterogeneous systems like big.LITTLE. To better manage idle for modern SoCs with a hierarchical structure, we are exploring extending runtime PM and genpd to CPUs so there is a unified framework for managing idle across all devices.

- Out of tree AOSP User space Patches - This is a discussion with the goal of organized action to see forward progress on AOSP user space patches that aren’t in AOSP for whatever reason.

BKK16-304 The State of GDB on AArch64
AArch64 and ARM GDB ports were added some years ago, but some useful features are still missing. We started to add these features to GDB in 2015 and most of them are already accepted by the GDB mainline.
This presentation will discuss these new added features, such as reverse debugging, tracepoint, and multi-arch debugging, together with some explanations on how does GDB support them in general.
This presentation will also introduce some basic GDB or debugger internal knowledges and also some GDB in-progress projects in which we plan to do and are interested in.

Las16 309 - lua jit arm64 port - status
This document summarizes the status of porting LuaJIT, a just-in-time compiler for the Lua programming language, to the ARM64 architecture. BKK16-213 Where's the Hardware?
Linaro has multiple labs and board farms with varying purposes. This session will start with an overview of each of these, their locations, their focus, etc. It will then provide examples and direction on how a Member can add their hardware to a board farm. It will also provide an overview of how a Member or employee can navigate/leverage/check out a board for experimentation and usage (this varies based upon which lab/board farm is being considered, so all will be reviewed) in each of the farm locations. Finally, the session will provide pointers to any respective documentation, user guides, etc. for each of the locations.
Emerging Persistent Memory Hardware and ZUFS - PM-based File Systems in User ...
In this talk, Dr. Amit Golander looks into emerging PM/NVDIMM devices, the value they bring to applications and most importantly how they revolutionize the storage stack.
In the second part, Boaz Harrosh and Shachar Sharon dive into new opportunities to develop memory-based filesystems in user space, leveraging a new open source project called ZUFS. ZUFS was presented in the last Linux Plumbers conference and unlike FUSE it focuses on delivering low latency and zero copy.
Dr. Amit Golander was the CTO of Plexistor, which developed the first enterprise-grade PM-based file system, and which was acquired earlier this year by NetApp.

LAS16-207: Bus scaling QoS
This document discusses challenges in system-on-chip (SoC) architectures and proposes using existing Linux frameworks to manage network-on-chip (NoC) interconnects. It outlines using the consumer-provider model to represent NoCs, describing topologies and endpoints in device trees, setting constraints between devices with PMQoS, and triggering updates through runtime power management. The goal is to leverage existing Linux infrastructure for controlling NoCs and improving performance, predictability and quality of service.
BKK16-410 SoC Idling & CPU Cluster PM
The linux kernel has two distinct ways of managing idle. The CPUidle framework for CPUs and for all other devices: runtime PM combined with generic power domains (genpd). In addition, CPUidle is not scaling well for multi-cluster SMP systems and heterogeneous systems like big.LITTLE. To better manage idle for modern SoCs with a hierarchical structure, we are exploring extending runtime PM and genpd to CPUs so there is a unified framework for managing idle across all devices.

★ Session Summary ★
To make application development a breeze, Apache Mynewt OS includes several optional middleware components and a build infrastructure to easily choose and configure them while creating an image for a target device. An example is the file system module with an API that allows the application to use file system operations without being tied to a particular file system implementation. Users are free to choose the FAT file system or Apache Mynewt’s Newtron Flash File System or any other FS of their choice. The logging infrastructure is another example. It allows applications, targets, and libraries to name and define their own log streams and direct them to desired output destinations. The stats module follows the same flexible design as the log module. The accompanying build and package management tool called the Newt Tool in the Apache Mynewt OS makes bundling and configuring the packages simple. It takes care of package dependency conflicts and automates toolchain selection to simplify testing and debugging. It allows components to be tested, versioned and released independently. Each component can therefore be decoupled from the other modules, allowing it to be shared and collaborated on across multiple operating systems. The steps for creating a log stream for a package will be presented as an example to demonstrate the design simplicity and modularity of the Mynewt OS and the power of the Newt tool.
