The Chinese Room (CR) is a thought experiment intended to prove that a computer cannot have a
mental life with a strong sense of intelligence alike to one that humans possess because a computer
does not have a genuine understanding. Rather, a computer is a mere simulator of understanding, and
by extension, a simulator of intelligence. According to John Searle, because computers lack a true
understanding they are rendered incapable of possessing mental life as we know and experience it
(Searle 2004). In the following paper, I intend to explain and philosophically examine John Searle s
argument of CR and will then proceed to reject his theory based on a series of objections. I will do this
by examining the concept of human intelligence through a filmic analogy, put forth the Systems Reply
objection, and examine how the CR argument is foregrounded in anthropocentric bias that
presupposes only humans are capable of true intelligence. Overall, I argue that CR fails to
convincingly argue that only humans can possess a human intelligence because it is an argument

The poem Because He loves Her , by Emily Dickinson, and the song Girl Afraid by The Smiths share
a common topic: relationship dynamics. They discuss two different couples and show both ends of the

misery is that of the narrator s. In the song, the girl laments that her boyfriend doesn t notice her
despite her attempts to garner his attention. In contrast, Not hoping for his notice vast / But nearer to
adore means that the woman in the poem does not have to try to get her beau s attention, and that he

Day 8 was a really slow day in my opinion, although it was super fun. Day 8 was Dr. Williams
birthday and he loves to celebrate his birthdays as all the coworkers would say. The first half of the
day we had 3 patients and all of them were hygiene so they just got their teeth cleaned and etc. On Dr.
Pabst side of the office, in my opinion it was pretty busy. The first patient came in to get fitted for

After she got her attachment off from her Invisalign. We had to take impressions on her so that she
could wear retainers for her teeth to remain straight and in place. After doing the impressions 5 times,
they finally tuned out. She literally wears a XL impression tray and even that little trying to fit all of
her teeth in. after the patient was finally done and gone, the next patient came in to get a permanent
crown cemented on once again because she swallowed her first one and didn t realize it until she went

we care about, while a Geomorphic hazard is that originating from the lithosphere including, volcanic

showing great destruction. This report will focus on the Great Chilean earthquake. I will report and
examine the causes, details, effects including, social, environmental and economical. I will also
examine what has been done to prepare, prevent and minimise the hazard and suggest ways to further
minimise the effects of this hazard.
2 Information about the event:
2.1 The great Chilean earthquake; the largest earthquake ever recorded struck Valdivia, Chile (See
figure 2.1)
2.2 On May 22, 1960, at 3:11 pm origin time.
2.3 The 1960 Chile earthquake was caused by the Nazca plate releasing tension and descending 15
meters underneath the South American Plate. (See figure 2.3)
2.4 At 3.11pm an 8.5 magnitude quake rocked southern Chile. The epicentre being off the coast of
Chile was just under the Pacific ocean causing huge landslides of debris. At 4:20 pm a 26ft wave came
in hitting most structures and building, several minutes later a 35ft wave rolled in killing more than
1000 people.
