This document provides information about hydatid disease. It is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. Dogs and other canines are the definitive hosts, where the adult tapeworm lives in their intestines. Humans can become intermediate hosts by ingesting parasite eggs from contaminated food, water, or soil. The eggs hatch and form cysts, most commonly in the liver or lungs, which can grow for many years without symptoms. Larger cysts can cause issues like jaundice or pressure. Symptoms include abdominal pain or swelling. Diagnosis involves imaging tests. Treatment involves surgery or medication to remove or kill the cysts.
3. It is communicable disease .
The term Zoonosis is derived from the Greek word ‘Zoon’ & ‘Noson’
meaning animals & disease
These are naturally transmitted between man and animal .
75% of emerging pathogens in humans are considered to be zoonotic
disease .
Interactions with animals can pose an individual at the risk of getting
zoonosis.
4. •It is a Zoonotic disease .
•It is an infection that is caused by the Metacystode stage i.e. the
larval stage of the causative agent .
•This infection is caused by the canine intestinal tapeworm –
Echinococcus granulosus.
•The adult form of this tapeworm is found in the dogs and other
carnivores .

6. 1) Stomach discomfort .
2) Diarrhea .
3) Unexplained weight loss .
4) Swollen abdomen .
5) Anemia .
6) Cough .
7) Weakness & fatigue .
8) Blood or fluid from ruptured cyst ( may be coughed up )
7. In man this disease persist as cysts .
These cysts grow slowly from 5 to 20 years before they are diagnosed .
The cyst may vary from the size of pinhead to the size of an football .
In more than 70% of the cases the cyst is located in the right lobe of liver,
& in 30% cases they are located in the kidney, lungs, brain, peritoneum, long
bones .
These cysts are filled with water .
When the cyst ruptures, the broad capsules split out & develops into a
hydatid .
8. The cysts of small size are generally asymptomatic .
However larger cysts cause pressure e.g. jaundice in liver cyst .
:
The incubation of these cysts may vary from months to years
depending upon the no and location of cyst and their growth .
9. Agent FACTORS
HOST FATORS
• AGENT FACTORS : Echinococcus species are small tapeworm of 7 mm length . It
bears four suckers and smaller & larger hooks (2 or 6) . It has four species ,
these are :
E . granulosus ( distributed worldwide ) .
E . Multilocularis ( e.g. – Iran & turkey ) .
E . Oligarthus ( occurring in central and south America ) .
E . Vogeli ( central an south America )
10.
11. life cycle of Echinococcus :
It is basically a dog – sheep cycle with man as an accidental intermediate host
Dog as definitive host in the cycle .
Adult tapeworm lives in the intestine of dog for 2 to 4 years .
The eggs are voided in the feces ( contaminating soil, vegetation and drinking water
as well ) .
Sheep, & other host ingest the infected vegetation (becomes infected) .
Eggs hatch in the intestine penetrating the intestinal lining and also migrate to other
organs .
12. These are basically located in liver, lungs & brain and develop into hydatid cyst
.
Then these organs of infected sheep are eaten by the dog .
Infected dog begins to pass the eggs of parasite after 7 weeks of being
infected .
( the man does not harbor the adult worm )
