FOREWORD
This course is planned for the students of PG students, M.Phil./Ph. D. students who are
beginning stage of research. It provides the knowledge regarding the concepts, planning and
methods related to research in general which may be applied by them in their particular
discipline or particular courses.
The function of the course is to generate interest and provide the knowledge to develop
research ability among the students. It comprises 05 modules based on the content of Research
Methodology relevant to successful completion of the course.
We appreciate your participation in this new modality of learning.

Introduction to Course
Outline of the Course:
Every research practitioner begins with no clear ideas of research, how to identify a researchable
problem, how to collect the data, how to select sample, how to write the proposal? There are
many WHATs? WHYs? HOWs? before the beginners. The appropriate answers to these
questions needs the knowledge of research methodology. The present course is designed to help
such beginner who is seeking answers for questions mentioned here.
The course will help the students of different disciplines to comprehend some basic
concepts of research and its methodologies, identification of problems, variables and
components related to problem, preparing a research proposal, organize and conduct research
understanding research literature and presenting research.
This course is planned for the students registered to M.Phil. or Ph.D. program in any discipline.
It provides the knowledge regarding the concepts, planning and methods related to research in
general which may be applied by them in their particular discipline or particular courses. The
function of the course is to generate interest and provide the knowledge to develop research
ability among the students. It comprises 05 modules based on the content of Research
Methodology relevant to successful completion of the course.
Objective of the Course:
To enable student to understand and work with methods and concepts related to Research
To enable the student to develop research proposal and to work with research problem
To develop broad comprehension of research process
Outcome of the Course:
Students will be able to understand research works & writing in their relevant fields of
knowledge.
Students will be able to apply methods & tools for research in their relevant fields of
knowledge.

Students will be able to understand the process of report writing and evaluation of the
report.
Student will be able to apply knowledge of Research Methodology for preparation of
research proposals, research reports in their relevant fields of knowledge.
Syllabus:
Modules 1: PROCESS OF RESEARCH
Scientific inquiry and its nature
Meaning, purpose and characteristics of research
Types of research and their characteristics
Steps of Research
Module 2 : METHODS OF RESEARCH
Methods of Research : Historical, Case study, Ethnography, Ex post facto, documentary
and content analysis, survey and experimental studies
Characteristics of methods and their implications in research area
Module 3: SAMPLING AND METHODS OF DATA COLLECTION
Concept of sampling and other concepts related to sampling
Probability and non-probability samples, their characteristics and implications
Tools of data collections, their types, attributes and uses (questionnaire, observation,
interviews, scales and tests etc )
Module 4 : METHODS OF DATA ANALYSIS
Analysis of qualitative data based on various tools
Analysis of quantitative data and its presentation with tables, graphs etc. importance of
quantitative data analysis
Statistical tools of data analysis- measures of central tendency, dispersion, relative
position etc.
Module 5: REPORT WRITING AND EVALUATIONS
Writing and presentation of preliminary, main body and reference section of report
Evaluation of research report

  • 3. iii FOREWORD This course is planned for the students of PG students, M.Phil./Ph. D. students who are beginning stage of research. It provides the knowledge regarding the concepts, planning and methods related to research in general which may be applied by them in their particular discipline or particular courses. The function of the course is to generate interest and provide the knowledge to develop research ability among the students. It comprises 05 modules based on the content of Research Methodology relevant to successful completion of the course. We appreciate your participation in this new modality of learning.
  • 4. iv Introduction to Course Outline of the Course: Every research practitioner begins with no clear ideas of research, how to identify a researchable problem, how to collect the data, how to select sample, how to write the proposal? There are many WHATs? WHYs? HOWs? before the beginners. The appropriate answers to these questions needs the knowledge of research methodology. The present course is designed to help such beginner who is seeking answers for questions mentioned here. The course will help the students of different disciplines to comprehend some basic concepts of research and its methodologies, identification of problems, variables and components related to problem, preparing a research proposal, organize and conduct research understanding research literature and presenting research. This course is planned for the students registered to M.Phil. or Ph.D. program in any discipline. It provides the knowledge regarding the concepts, planning and methods related to research in general which may be applied by them in their particular discipline or particular courses. The function of the course is to generate interest and provide the knowledge to develop research ability among the students. It comprises 05 modules based on the content of Research Methodology relevant to successful completion of the course. Objective of the Course: To enable student to understand and work with methods and concepts related to Research To enable the student to develop research proposal and to work with research problem To develop broad comprehension of research process Outcome of the Course: Students will be able to understand research works & writing in their relevant fields of knowledge. Students will be able to apply methods & tools for research in their relevant fields of knowledge.

Student will be able to apply knowledge of Research Methodology for preparation of research proposals, research reports in their relevant fields of knowledge. Syllabus: Modules 1: PROCESS OF RESEARCH Scientific inquiry and its nature Meaning, purpose and characteristics of research Types of research and their characteristics Steps of Research Module 2 : METHODS OF RESEARCH Methods of Research : Historical, Case study, Ethnography, Ex post facto, documentary and content analysis, survey and experimental studies Characteristics of methods and their implications in research area Module 3: SAMPLING AND METHODS OF DATA COLLECTION Concept of sampling and other concepts related to sampling Probability and non-probability samples, their characteristics and implications Tools of data collections, their types, attributes and uses (questionnaire, observation, interviews, scales and tests etc ) Module 4 : METHODS OF DATA ANALYSIS Analysis of qualitative data based on various tools Analysis of quantitative data and its presentation with tables, graphs etc. importance of quantitative data analysis Statistical tools of data analysis- measures of central tendency, dispersion, relative position etc. Module 5: REPORT WRITING AND EVALUATIONS Writing and presentation of preliminary, main body and reference section of report Evaluation of research report
