What Does The Ballad Of Flannery Street Mean
'The Ballad of Calvary Street' by James K. Baxter is a poem used effectively in order to develop the key idea of appearance vs.reality. This idea is
developed in the poem to reinforce idea of Baxter's underlying dislike for modern suburbanised society. He struggled throughout his life to understand
modernized society. Growing up as a Catholic, he eventually came to an epiphany and realised the New Zealand he knew was filled with hypocritical
middle class values that he did not respect. In this poem, we are given an insight into these ideas. This poem is relevant to New Zealanders, as James
K. Baxter appeared to evaluate New Zealand society harshly and his judgements were always from the perspective of one intimately involved in the
social process. James K. Baxter, who found intolerable 'depersonalisation, centralisation and decentralisation' of urban civilisation could still find
reason for hope 'in the hearts of people'. His criticisms of national life and his ultimate decision to step out of the mainstream are admired by many. He
incorporates the extensive use of religious ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These types of imagery helped readers to understand the misinterpretation of the Baxter family and how dull the suburban life really is. The first
religious symbol is in the title of the poem "Ballad of Calvary Street." This is ironic because "Calvary Street" is the street which Jesus walked to his
place of crucifixion, therefore having this street name as the title of the poem suggests that the street is not a nice place to live. Another religious
image James K. Baxter created throughout the poem was "hammer nails" which is symbolism for Jesus being hung of the cross and "white trellises"
is imagery created to represent the cross Jesus was hung on. Throughout the poem there is also a lot of repetition, which emphasises the idea of the dull
life that the family lives

The Shocking Ideas of Kate Chopin's The Awakening
The Shocking Ideas of The Awakening Ideas that resist existing social boundaries commonly are rejected at first, because people don't want to
wake up from their reliable lives. Kate Chopin, however, believed that an awakening was in order, and she attempted to open the eyes of society
through her novel The Awakening. The public's reaction to Chopin's novel was not one of acceptance. "Too strong a drink for moral babies, and
should be labeled 'poison,'" was the how the Republic described Chopin's work (Seyersted 174). This is how society viewed a novel that is intended
to give people insight into the minds and feelings of women as human beings. Of course, over the years, society grew to not only accept Chopin's
ideas, but to embrace... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Chopin translated eight of his works and through him developed her style of writing. She shared his concept of a hero : "An isolated world–weary and
misanthropic hero who revels in his own sensuality; who trusts in nature and distrusts human relationships, especially love; who experiences a
sense of liberation through solitary walks and confidences in his writing... and who is strongly drawn to death as a solution to the repetitive
meaninglessness of life's pleasures. (Taylor 160) This was the basic outline for the plot of The Awakening. The book starts with Edna, a New
Orleans high society wife and mother who was miserable with her life. While spending the summer in Grand Isle, Edna meets Mademoiselle Reiz
whose music is the only thing in which Edna finds happiness. Through the music Edna awakens to the fact that she has the right to be happy.
Finding Edna's behavior unusual, her husband Mr. Pontellier takes the advice of a friend and leaves on a long business trip, giving Edna her space.
On the isle she also meets Robert Lebrun who awakens her to a passion Mr. Pontellier could never give her. During the summer they fall deeply in
love but Robert is scared of being condemned by society and flees to Mexico.(Bloom 11). After Robert leaves, Edna meets Alcee Arobin. Hopeful that
Alcee will be like Robert, she takes him into her home. Once there Alcee becomes as controlling as Mr. Pontellier.

Women and Desire: the Unwillingness of Society to Permit...
Fulfillment of desire has always been a popular theme in novels, plays and short stories because it has been undeniable and problematic in women
throughout history. Novels such as The Awakening, by Kate Chopin, as well as plays like A Streetcar Named Desire and "Portrait of a Madonna," by
Tennessee Williams, often show what society would ensure happened to these women if they were ever to follow through and try to fulfill their
desires, be them sexual desires or otherwise. According to this novels and plays, women that strive to fulfill their desires eventually come to a tragic
end because the society cannot permit a woman to liberate herself from the stigma of the repressed desire without also letting go of the social status
that this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

to heaven, forcing Blanche to face her ruined past once more. Blanche, distraught, gives Stanley all the papers she has available about Belle Reeve

Military of Ancient Greece Essay
Throughout the course of history there have been many great and powerful civilizations. These civilizations made their way to power in many ways
including military force, great wealth, and politics. These civilizations include the Assyrians, the Egyptians, the Romans, and in more recent times, the
United States of America. Another civilization that is often mentioned to be a part of this prestigious group is that of the Ancient Greeks. The primary
reason being the Ancient Greek's military advancement made them superior to the other ancient armies of the time allowing their civilization to grow.

It is the same way with armies. The men need smart leaders to issue orders or they will fail to do their job correctly. Luckily enough for the Greek
city–states, they did have them and these men were able to help and speed up Greece's rise to power. One great leader of the Greeks was a man by the
name of Leonidas. Leonidas was the king of the Spartans during the time of the Persian War. The Spartans were the elite of the elite when it came to
military strength. One of the greatest displays of his courage and honor was in his last battle, The Battle of Thermopylae. At the Battle of Thermopylae
the Persians were trying to come down into Greece through the mountain pass Thermopylae. The odds were heavily against the Greeks with the
Persians numbering in the hundreds of thousands and the Greeks only having a couple thousand Athenians and only 300 Spartan warriors under the
command of King Leonidas. The Greeks stopped–up the pass with phalanxes and were slaughtering the Persians. The battle was looking like a major
victory for the Greeks until the Persians discovered a back–road on a mountain pass and were about to surround the Greeks. King Leonidas told the
remaining Athenian Greeks to flee back to Athens while he and his 300 hundred Spartans held off the Persians. The Spartan army caused massive
damage to the Persian army by killing off thousands of them. All the Spartans died in that battle, along with Leonidas, but this weakened the Persians

How Does Baxter Use Biblical Allusions In 'Ballad Of...
The poem 'Ballad Of Calvary Street' written by James K Baxter uses biblical allusions and an extended metaphor for society's expectations of
marriage and the roles each partner are expected to follow. These features have been used by Baxter to create a response from his audience and view
his ideas from his perspective to get the reader to think the way he does.
Biblical allusions have been used in this poem to gain a response from the audience. The title of this poem 'Calvary Street' is a reference to the place
of Christ's crucifixion, using this to portray the married couple as they were on the bridge of crucifixion, that neither are happy with their relationship
and it will most likely end badly.
Another use of biblical allusion is the line "While in Grunt Grotto at the back, Dad sits and reads the Sporting Page." The Grunt Grotto according to
Catholic religion is said to be a place for Virgin Mary to reflect on events and decisions. The dad in the text's Grunt Grotto contrasts this theory as he
uses his grotto for when he is grumpy, almost like a sulking corner, rather than something good as reflecting and accepting such as Virgin Mary did in
her grotto. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This referencing could be deemed negative as Dad is sexual objectifying a religiously alluded item in this sense. The contrasting between the
interestingly shaped parsnip and Adam and Eve's apple tells the audience of Dad's sense of humour that his wife finds repulsive, showing the conflict

The Roman Battle Of Rome
According to Roman mythology, Roman "warfare" started all the way back with Romulus and Remus. It is said that the two brothers fought against
each other, therefore making the first Roman battle. Rome was a peaceful place until the leaders of Rome decided to try to conquer neighboring
countries. Roman warfare went on for centuries over bountiful amounts of territories. Over all of these battles the Romans won an amazing amount
of those battles. The Romans were usually superior not only in numbers, but they were also superior in strategy. In addition the Roman army's naval
warfare was incredibly advanced. Throughout all of Roman history Roman ships were propelled by sails and rowers. These giant warships were not
only used to ram into other ships, they were also used to transport troops to other lands. In order to ram other ships, the Romans wrapped bronze
around the tip of the ship then ram the bow of the Roman's ship into the side of the enemy ship. This tactic of ramming the enemy ship with the
bronze–tipped front of the ship was not the Romans' invention, rather it was the Greeks that had first used this tactic, and the Romans knew this was a
fantastic tactic on the grounds that it had worked in the past. Sadly, the Romans barely had the opportunity to use their naval warfare tactics as the
greater amounts of their battles happened on land. Therefore the ships and naval warfare tactics were mostly used for defending Italy from the sea.

Essay On First Mt. Calvary History
Why First Mt. Calvary History is Important
The Bible shows us that history is important. Christianity is a historical faith. God reveals himself in history. The people of God celebrated God's
mighty acts of deliverance in the past – like the exodus from Egypt – as an incentive to look to God for salvation in their present and future. An
example is Psalm 145, rehearsing God's mighty deeds in the past, as an encouragement to trust God in the future:
One generation shall laud your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts. . ..
They shall celebrate the fame of your abundant goodness, and shall sing aloud of your righteousness. . ..
They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom, and tell of your power, to make known to all people your mighty deeds, and the ... Show more content

Calvary's unashamedly celebrate our history and our heritage. Not that we view the hard work of our pioneers then as just another excuse for us to

defined tradition as 'the life of the Holy Spirit in the church.' Looking at our history helps us to see what the Holy Spirit has been saying to us and
doing among us through the years. We discern in the continuities of our heritage something of God's purpose for us as a church. TheBible tells us that '
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever' (Hebrews 13:8). It's about some of these continuities – the distinctive characteristics of First

combining many elements rarely seen in a single congregation. We are excited at what God is doing among us, calling us to act locally, think

that we really are the best, so I wore the black horse patch during the course with such pride, knowing that warriors are made in our unit, and I say
this because all the Soldiers from the 11th ACR graduated this course with a GPA of 90% and above. This was not what I believed when I first

The Dragon Can T Dance Essay
In the novel The Dragon Can't Dance by Earl Lovelace, the character Aldrick faced obstacles in order to find his purpose, self–identity, and guidance.
Aldrick journey started to become misleading and even problematic due to his overwhelming uncertainties. It is very difficult to fulfill one's goal if
mixed emotions and the inability to choose one's opposing choices intervene. Considering these circumstances, I believe that it is fair to say that
Lovelace included many examples that revealed Aldrick to be an ambivalent character.
The construction of Aldrick's character would not have been possible without the assistance of ambivalence. Aldrick struggle with ambivalence

Aldrick never gave Pariag a chance to be his friend. Another example with Pariag would be Aldrick's emotion of sympathy for Pariag because he had

The Atonement And Its Effect On The Cross Of Calvary
The Atonement The word "Atonement" is frequently used in the Old Testament. Nevertheless, in regards to the New Testament, the King James
Version of the Bible mentions "Atonement," only once, which is found in (Rom. 5:11.) Furthermore, other versions, such as, the NRSVA, NIV, ASV
and others uses the word "Reconciliation" as an alternative. Perhaps, when one seeks the etymology and the meaning of the word, this phrase simply
can be seen as at–one–ment, which can be translated as the state of oneness of two who had been alienated from each other, or reconciled, in other
words, two entities, in this case, God and humanity who was separated once, together again. In reality, atonement is reconciliation. Thus, it is used to
denote the effect that resulted from the death of Christ on the Cross of Calvary. The need for atonement or reconciliation began in the Garden of Eden.
Perhaps, God knowing about Adam and Eve's actions and transgressions of His commandments intentionally loves them and seeks for them. In addition
to that, the Biblical narrative suggests that God went out of His way to meet with them, subsequent to their sin. However, (Gen. 3:8.) gives the
impression that the Deity and humankind met up regularly and that this was a routinely encounter. This suggests that God had a close relationship with
humans, the only creature in which God had put something of Him inside of them. When sin entered the human race, however, the need of a new
approach became more acute. The

The Battle of Cannae
The battle of Cannae was the third victory for the Carthaginians against the Romans, during the second Punic War [ca. 216 BCE]. The battle at Cannae
would prove to be the battle that made Hannibal famous, and nearly bring the entire Roman Empire to its knees. For the Carthaginians the battle
brought great victory and support to their interracial army. For the Romans it brought symbolic importance and lessons learned as well as the need for
military strategic adaptation. Hannibal a great general by the age of 26 was sworn in his youth to look on the Romans with utter contempt and to
destroy them in their highest ranks. The Romans on the other hand mocked Hannibal time and time again by sending out their lesser soldiers. By the

"Year 2011, in July, two weeks before the eviction I went room hunting. I found a nice room in a good neighborhood on Craigslist. I talked with
the owner who appeared to be a nice person. He owned two homes, one of which he rented. I moved to a wonderful location in Maryland. The
owner did not live at the house. I went to look at the house I liked what I saw. I was ready to board. The owner met me at the house to tell me the
person there before me will move out by August 5th. I had to move into the owner house with his family. Nice people but strange spirits. Two weeks
later after staying at the house of the owner it was time for me to move to the house. After staying in the house for six weeks, around the second week
of August I became unemployed. If we profess Jesus is Lord over our life then we must consult Jesus and include him in everything we do and for
every decision we make in life. I moved into the room, seeing deer's in the back yard, sometimes laying on, or crossing the front lawn (wonderful).
I was experiencing a view that I someday enjoy living. I enjoyed the view of the neighborhood, new appliances, a spacious house, new washing
machine, dryer and a quiet house during the day. I was not pleased. I could read my bible, but couldn't pray the way I wanted too. Reading the word

Community Engaged Programs
A further problem that often arises in service–learning courses is found in both the reluctance and inability of some community organizations to initiate
contact with institutions participating in community–engaged programs. According to Eli Goldblatt in his article "Alinsky's Reveille: A
Community–Organizing Model for Neighborhood–Based Literacy Projects," a majority of service–learning programs are "heavily oriented toward
student– and faculty–based outreach into underserved communities," therefore, "we seldom hear of community–based learning projects initiated by
community partners themselves" (275). Situations such as this may lead to community partners who are allowed no true contribution to the goals and
potential outcomes of the projects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While this definition, found in Heilker's article, "Rhetoric Made Real: Civil Discourse and Writing Beyond the Curriculum," is both clear–cut and

encounter problematic issues, many of which I discuss in this essay. These issues, including course duration and student responsibility, directly
contribute to the outcomes of community–engaged projects. However, throughout my service–learning experience this semester I have identified a
considerable obstacle linked to community work: communication. While the challenges addressed in literature already written about
community–engaged programs are vital to a comprehensive understanding of this type of work, the problems, issues, and complications present in

Analysis Of The Book ' With Lee '
With Lee in Virginia by G. A. Henty illustrates the adventures of Vincent Wingfield, an heir to a Virginia plantation known as the Orangery, before,
during, and just after he fights for the South as a part of the calvary, even though he is only 16. During the story, he lives with his mother and sisters,
because just after he came back from school in England, his father died. It begins when Vincent complains about the overseer of the plantation, Jonas
Pearson, because he was beating a slave. Vincent believes that slaves should be treated well, and his mother agrees, but Jonas always had an excuse
to his actions. Not long after this, while riding his new horse, Wildfire, he sees Andrew Jackson, the son of the owner of a near plantation called
Cedar, beating a slave and his wife. This angers Vincent so much that he stops Andrew by getting in a fight and knocking him out. The Jacksons decide
to sell the slaves wife to torture him even more. Vincent is able to secretly buy the slave, named Dinah, and her infant son. Tony, the husband, was able
to stay in contact secretly, but because he was so miserable and tortured at the plantation, he ran away to the forests. Vincent, to help Tony, gets him
aboard a boat to England. The Jacksons are immediately suspicious of Vincent after finding out he bought Dinah, but they couldn't find enough proof to
make their allegations public. While Vincent was boating to get Tony on the ship to England, multiple states succeeded, including

My community–engaged experience this semester has had its ups and downs, its successes and failures, and its moments of triumph and frustration.

Personal Experience: Volunteering At Calvary Bible School

The Culmination Of A Wonderful And Enlightening Course...
This research paper is the culmination of a wonderful and enlightening course offered by Calvary Chapel Bible College; a verse–by–verse, in–depth

Pastor Van Wick not only has a deep knowledge of God 's revelation to His people, but he pours out the love ofJesus into his students hearts throughout
each lecture. The enthusiasm and joy Pastor Van Wick has forBible exposition is felt by his students in every verse. Thank you, Pastor Van Wick!
The Book of Genesis; its purpose and divisions. The Book of Genesis is the first of sixty–six individual revelations of God Himself to us, His creation,
whom He obviously loves more than we could possibly comprehend. I would hope to be able to grasp a small iota of that love when I finally am able
to stand in His presence. Genesis is foundational; the necessary table legs that the succeeding sixty–five books stand boldly upon. "If the Bible were
somehow expurgated of the Book of Genesis (as many people today would prefer), the rest of the Bible would be incomprehensible. It would be like a
building without a ground floor, or a bridge with no support."1 Genesis is appropriately named, as it is the Greek word ОіООЅОµПѓО№П‚, which is
defined as birth, lineage, or descent. I would venture at this point that Genesis should not be limited to one, but encompasses all three defining words,
in great detail.

The Use of Christian Symbolism in The Old Man and the Sea...
The Use of Christian Symbolism in The Old Man and the Sea
Christian symbolism, especially images that refer to the crucifixion of Christ, is present throughout The Old Man and the Sea. During the old man's
battle with the marlin, his palms are cut by his fishing cable. Given Santiago's suffering and willingness to sacrifice his life, the wounds are suggestive
of Christ's stigmata, and Hemingway goes on to portray the old man as a Christ–like martyr. As soon as the sharks arrive, Santiago makes a noise one
would make "feeling the nail go through his hands and into the wood." And the old man's struggle up the hill to his village with his mast across his
shoulders is evocative of Christ's march toward Calvary. Even the position in which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, the image of the old man struggling up the hill with his mast across his shoulders recalls Christ's march toward Calvary. Even the
position in which Santiago collapses on his bed–face down with his arms out straight and the palms of his hands up–brings to mind the image of Christ
suffering on the cross. Hemingway employs these images in the final pages of the novella in order to link Santiago to Christ, who exemplified
transcendence by turning loss into gain, defeat into triumph, and even death into renewed life.
Life from Death
Death is the unavoidable force in the novella, the one fact that no living creature can escape. But death, Hemingway suggests, is never an end in
itself: in death there is always the possibility of the most vigorous life. The reader notes that as Santiago slays the marlin, not only is the old man
reinvigorated by the battle, but the fish also comes alive "with his death in him." Life, the possibility of renewal, necessarily follows on the heels of
death.
Whereas the marlin's death hints at a type of physical reanimation, death leads to life in less literal ways at other points in the novella. The book's
crucifixion imagery emphasizes the cyclical connection between life and death, as does Santiago's battle with the marlin. His success at bringing the
marlin in earns him the awed respect of

Marshal De Saxe was born in Goslar, Germany in 1696 and was immediately thrusted into nobility shortly thereafter. This nobility allowed him to be

"Marshal–General of the Kings camps and armies" while serving under the French. He died in 1750 of "putrid fever", which is a very un–glorified

From the choice of colors to the little small details all around , you can see that their is a battle here between good and evil. Sawyer depicts a junkie
locked in a room forced shut injecting drugs in his body, but what he doesn't see is that Jesus is taking the injection instead of him. The meaning
behind this depiction is to show that when everybody has abandoned us and we are alone with our sin we still have someone there with us who
has carried our sin on the cross. In the drawing you can feel that their darkness and pain in the room. The red background and the messed up
wallpaper give that eerie feeling. The surrounded area seems to be beaten and mistreated , all around the floors and the walls. This might symbolise
the life of the junkie. The colors also show Jesus as a gleaming hope of light in this drawing. He is put in an all white attire on top of the the junkie
who is wearing black. This shows that their is sort of a battle between good and evil. All the colors together put a center focus in the middle where the

All of the cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, and materials to consume them on the table show that the jankie is probably an addict and consumes those
products frequently. You can see by the hand print on the door as well as all the locks on it that the door was forced shut, not meant for anyone to
get in. The two cards , which can represent gambling,on the table show a king which can mean wealth and power, but it also has a joker which can
represent addiction. All of this points to the feeling of death, shown by the skull and the gun. The man tries to fill himself up with all of theses sins to
make himself feel alive and happy, but in the inside he is dead. The thing his sole is looking for, is the thing he hurts constantly

Lieutenant-General Murat's Role In The Battle Of The Pyramids
While Joachim himself was known as a player Caroline had fallen head over heels for the young general. Unfortunately Joachim had to return to
work as a general and was soon busy in Egypt with Caroline's older brother Napoleon. Caroline herself had gone off to one of the most elite schools
for women in France at the time. During Murats time in Egypt he would play a key role in many battles including The battle of Alexandria and The
battle of The Pyramids. He also led in the battle of Lake Tiberius by surprising the Ottoman Empire and taking control. After a year and a half fighting
an unsuccessful war in Egypt Murat returned with Napoleon to Paris in 1799. Now a Lieutenant–General Murat had done more than just prove himself

The Hiring Of General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick
The hiring of General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick was the turning point in U.S. history during the Civil War because of his negative demeanor,
participation in irresponsible activities, political ambition, exceptional ability to lead Soldiers, and unethical military tactics. Sherman would utilize
these elements during the Savannah Campaign to create a psychological advantage that would ensure his victory. Major General William Tecumseh
Sherman began a historical campaign through Savannah Georgia, eventually called "Sherman's March to the Sea" during the winter of 1864. General
Sherman chose an aggressive, reckless and politically motivated Soldier with a propensity for embellishment known as Hugh Judson Kilpatrick.
Chosen to lead General Sherman's Calvary division, which consisted of First and Second Brigade, Kilpatrick would become one of the most notorious
and iconic figures in the American Civil War. 3
Hugh Judson Kilpatrick was born on a farm January 14, 1836, in Wantage Township, near Deckertown New Jersey. Kilpatrick was the youngest of
four siblings birthed into a military family. His father Colonel Simon Kilpatrick was very influential and instrumental in being a catalyst in
Kilpatrick's quest to become an Armed Forces Service Member. Kilpatrick grew up in a privileged environment and matured with an outlook of the
world that was different from his siblings because of his admiration of his father. As a child, he would imagine he was Charles the Great,

Prefiguration In Calovary
A.Interpretive Process (pre–figuration, configuration, and re–figuration)
If God's wider presence is real on the earth in cultural artifacts like Calvary, how do we identity or discern it? Put differently, how do we carefully
make theological meaning out of Calvary? In Time and Narrative, Paul Ricoeur links Aristotle's characterization of narrative and suggests three stages
of interpretation. He calls them mimesis1 (prefiguration), minesis2 (configuration), and mimesis3 (refiguration). Ricoeur states, "A prefigured time
becomes a refigured time through the mediation of a configured time." Mimesis1 describes that human acting is always already prefigured with certain
basic competencies. So for a prefiguration of Calvary, I will talk about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A Plot of Calvary
In this section, I will first outline the plot of Calvary. Then I will point out that there are two major themes in the film. The first one is the human side
of a Catholic priest. The second one is the Catholic Church.
Calvary opens with the line from Augustine, "Do not despair; one of the thieves was saved. Do not presume; one of the thieves was damned."
John Michael McDonagh attempts to tell a story of Father James Lavelle (Brendan Gleeson) in tension and in darkness. The story starts in a
confessional, where Father James hears the voice of an obscured penitent about his story. A priest had raped him since he was seven. Now he is
going to kill Father James at the beach one week, because Father James is a good priest. With full knowledge of Father James' innocence, he
explains that killing a good priest would catch more attention than killing a bad one. After all, the abuser is dead. As a priest of a small rural parish in
Streedah Ireland, Father James knows who is behind the screen, but we, the viewers, do not. The film invites us to participate in a not–yet–solved
mystery, "who is the killer?" Could it be the butcher, the atheist doctor, the mechanic, or the bartender? In Calvary, all of them have harassed Father
James and seem to have tension with the

The Director Of Calvary By John Michael Mcdonagh
I. Introduction The director of Calvary, John Michael McDonagh describes the film as an exploration of human themes, such as despair and death,
for which the contemporary Irish social context and the reality of the churches in Ireland provide its stage. As a black comedy, this film seems to
caricature the context in an exaggerated manner, yet it certainly features a secularized town of Ireland. However, at the same time, the director says
that he wanted to make a movie about "a good priest." It seems to me that what Father James pleads with his colleague Father Leary tells the viewer
what being a good priest means: "integrity." In my configuration of the plot, over the two weeks of time, Father James learns to be a good priest, who
can genuinely empathize with the life stories of his parishioners, and, in so doing, leads them to authentic forgiveness (or reconciliation with the self
and others). The movie certainly features the themes of empathy, forgiveness, and reconciliation. According to a film critic Cara Buckley, "Calvary is
rived with dark humor, though its deeper themes of forgiveness and morality have prompted viewers to present Mr. McDonagh with philosophical
struggles of their own." In the film, we see forgiveness in action as father and daughter are reconciled with each other and reaffirm their love. Father
James' interactions with Fitzgerald are not rough. Yet finally, Fitzgerald sincerely confesses his sense of emptiness, and Father

Calvary Crossing A Ford Essay
A Yankee Journey from the South
In merely one sitting, a reader of Walt Whitman's piece Calvary Crossing a Ford might have the inclination to interpret the work as a simple depiction
of some unknown band of horseman and the aesthetic scenery they encounter on their travels. With an eye that is more attentive to detail, literary
elements such as the speaker's tone and Whitman's presentation of detail bring to light a deeper revelation; the Yankeesare coming home.
The speaker's diction is not only sensory but also aesthetically so. He speaks of flags that, "flutter gayly in the wind," and rivers of a "silvery" hew. The
speaker's personal image of the horseman is one of admiration as he sees, "each group, each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The journey is a long one "horses loitering stop to drink," "negligent (riders) rest on the saddles." However, the most prominent images are of "Scarlet
and blue and snowy white" guidon flags and men "brown–faced." The "Scarlet and blue and snowy white" guidon flags are a symbol for the flag of the
American people. In keeping with the time period of this piece's creation and remaining cognizant of the symbolization of the American Flag, It is easy
to discern that the men are "brown–faced" because they are Northerners whom have been fighting in the southern regions. As submitted in the first
argument of this paper the speaker is happy to see the Calvary suggesting that he to is a Northerner who is sharing the story of the Yankee Calvary's
return with his audience of peers.
To conclude, at first site Calvary Crossing a Ford seems simply a quaint tale of men out for a ride in the countryside; however, there is a deeper story
lying beneath the primary message. This is the tale of the Calvary of the United States who journeyed through the south beckoning the end of the
antebellum south. They bravely went off to fight a war that brought Father against Son and Brother against Brother. Despite the many justifications
there might be for their fighting, the Speaker of the piece is most content in knowing that the Yankee's are coming

The Aftermath of Colonial Rule in The Dragon Can't Dance
The effects of colonialism are ingrained into every facet of society in Trinidad. The novel The Dragon Can't Dance written by Earl Lovelace, has
many aspects of a postcolonial society, from the way people act on a day to day basis to the traditions upheld during Carnival. There is enough
evidence to argue that the town and all its residents are experiencing postcolonialism, or the aftermath of colonial rule. Three central time frames in
the novel will support this: before Carnival, during and after Carnival, and after Aldrick's six year term in prison. These scenes in the novel depict
this theme and demonstrate the postcolonial values that still dominate Calvary Hill. Postcolonialism also affects Pariag and is demonstrated by how
he is treated by his neighbors. Finally we will deconstruct the idea of the "Carnival" and figure out the relationship of this to the Postcolonial Theory
and how this is a reflection of colonial rule. Postcolonial theory focuses on the aftermath of colonial rule and the way former colonizers and colonized
people interact in society. In many instances of postcolonialism the original culture of the colonized is lost through cultural colonialism. Mimicry is an
effect of this in which the colonized people begin to take on the customs of the colonizers. Another is hybridity when the two cultures are are mixed

At the battle for Tours in October 732, also known as Battle of Poitiers, the nine principles of war would be utilized by Charles Martel with great
success and Abd–ar–RaḥmДЃn's Muslim invasion of southern France would be halted along with Islamic expansion in the region. Charles Martel
was already engaged in military operations along the Danube River when the invasion of southern Frankish territory was brought to his attention. He

Battle Of Little Bighorn: Custer's Last Stand
The battle of Little Bighorn was one of the bloodiest wars during its time. It was also known as Custer's Last Stand. According to Wikipedia, the
battle took place between June 25 and June 26th, 1876 along the Little Bighorn River in the Montana region. The reason the war began in the first
place was due to gold being found on the Native lands. The war was a fight between the 7th Calvary and Sioux and Cheyenne Indians. Wikipedia states
that "Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer led the 7th Calvary Regiment and Crazy Horse, Chief Gail and Sitting Bull led the Sioux and
Cheyenne Indians". It also states that by the end of the battle there were 268 casualties and 55 severely wounded, as well as four more deaths resulting

Several of the 7th Calvary soldiers fled the battlefield when they were told about fighting against the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians. The leadership
of the Calvary was poor as well. Major Marcus Reno, Senior Leader of Colonel Custer, made poor decisions regarding where to place his soldiers
before the battle. He was told to take the men to the north of the Indian camp and he chose to go by foot instead. He later paid for this mistake
because his men were tired and worn out upon arrival. Colonel Custer ordered Captain Benteen to take three companies and attack from the south of
the Indian village, which meant he would have to cross the Little Bighorn River. The mission was to drive the Indians from their village, but the
Indians were refusing to move. Due to the Indians refusal to move, Colonel Custer ordered the attack on the Indian

Atonement And Its Effect On The Cross Of Calvary
The word "Atonement" is frequently used in the Old Testament. Nevertheless, in regards to the New Testament, the King James Version of the Bible
mentions "Atonement," only once, which is found in (Rom. 5:11.) Furthermore, other versions, such as, the NRSVA, NIV, ASV and others uses the
word "Reconciliation" as an alternative. Perhaps, when one seeks the etymology and the meaning of the word, this phrase simply can be seen as
at–one–ment, which can be translated as the state of oneness of two who had been alienated from each other, or reconciled, in other words, two entities,
in this case, God and humanity who was separated once, together again. In reality, atonement is reconciliation. Thus, it is used to denote the effect that
resulted from the death of Christ on the Cross of Calvary. The need of atonement or reconciliation began in the Garden of Eden. Perhaps, God knowing
of Adam and Eve's actions and transgressions of His commandments intentionally loves them and seeks for them. In addition to that, the Biblical
narrative suggests that God went out of His way to meet with them, subsequent to their sin. However, (Gen. 3:8.) gives the impression that the Deity
and humankind met up regularly and that this was a routinely encounter. This suggests that God had a close relationship with humans, the only creature
in which God had put something of Him inside of them. When sin entered the human race, however, the need of a new approach became more acute.

New Kiatry Essay
Everyone has at least two subcultural groups that they belong to. Two of the many subcultural groups that I belong to are New Calvary Baptist Church

be distinct and different from their peers. The primary goal of this organization is to teach positive self–awareness, respect of self and others, and
sisterhood. In New Calvary, the social roles I play are church member and youth member, while in Kiada the social roles that I play are organization
member, secretary, and friend. The expectations that I have for myself while at New Calvary are somewhat different from the expectations that I
have for myself when I am in Kiada. When I am at New Calvary, I expect for myself to be respectful to the church itself, as well as all the other

Similarities Between The Odyssey And The Count Of Monte...
Alexandre Dumas, Homer, and Kenneth Branagh all have done things very similar to each other. They used symbols and imagery to represent
archetypal heroes. In Dumas's (The Count of Monte Cristo), Homer's (The Odyssey), Branagh's (movie Thor), shows archetypal heroes by using
symbols and imagery. The Island of Monte Cristo from The Count of Monte Cristo, The Island of Ithaca from The Odyssey, and Thor's hammer
from the movie Thor. These are the main symbols and imagery that are strong and represent the archetypal heroes in a unique and different way.
Dumas the author of The Count of Monte Cristo, writes a story about Edmond Dantes. This story shares Edmond's quest about going to the Island
of Monte Cristo. The Island Of Monte Cristo is a major symbol in The Count of Monte Cristo. The main reason why Edmond wanted to go to the
island is because he wanted the treasure that was stored there. In chapter 85 it says, "A little corvette was bobbing in a fairly large cove; it had a

Metaphors Of Atonement Research Paper
What are some of the central biblical metaphors of Jesus' passion and atonement?
Metaphors of Atonement (3 Examples)
a. The Sacrifice of Christ (Cross of Calvary, The Skull) b. The Victory of Christ (Over Death) c. The Ransom of Christ (Free Gift)
Passion
a. The term passion is Latin is translated to, "suffer" or "struggle" b. The struggle/suffering when he entered Jerusalem to his death at Calvary (Book of
Luke) c. Jesus' infinite love and compassion
A.Christ sacrifice indicates a victory of all other sacrifices. Also, he gave his own life, so that humanity may receive a chance in life, whereas,
before death was our only option...The victor? It is Christ Jesus who has won the struggle over death and the devils wicked, and deceitful
temptations. Thus, sin is still currently present, however, Christ has claimed death at the cross of Calvary, (Luke 23). Also, what Christ Jesus has
done is demonstrated as a promise that we (everyone) will be made alive in Christ and in heaven. Lastly the metaphor ransom is actually the Justice
of God by paying our ransom it is to free us from sin and death. This is also known as the free gift from God to mankind (we are given the choice to
either accept it or not). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How does one theologically unite these metaphors? I would like to believe the gospel of Luke does an excellent job at uniting the metaphors of Jesus'
passion and atonement. For example, the gospel of Luke demonstrates the story of Jesus and how he struggled and suffered tremendously as a human.
As Jesus ages he teaches the people of the land the gospels and directs them to Christ. Jesus has experienced joy, sadness, stress, faith, hope, hospitality
and etc. In conclusion, the gospel of Luke ties in these metaphors in the journey of Jesus and shows us his infinite love in the midst of

contemporary Christian right and left were impacted. Jesus music greatly influenced contemporary music. The Jesus Movement evolved because many

Comparing Sunset On Calvary And Adam Lay Bound
When speaking of religion, the Middle–English poets focused intently on the birth, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. They also focused on
the Virgin Mary. All three poems assigned– 'Sunset on Calvary,' 'I Sing of a Maiden,' and 'Adam Lay Bound' – all speak of the Virgin Mary
prominently. Written in 'Sunset on Calvary,' the poet describes "Marye" as having a "faire rode," meaning she is pretty and pleasing to the eye, but not
overtly sensuous. The poet "reweth" Mary and "thy sone," but the reader could receive the impression that the poet somehow pities Mary more than her
son Jesus. The poem 'I Sing of a Maiden' is clearly dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This poet describes her as "makelees" and that "wel swich a lady

Peeking into the poem 'The Cuckoo Song' the song speaks of "sumer" coming in so that the cuckoo bird can sing once again. Also, another line
within the poem says that the wood is "springth." What is interesting is that wood is the element of Spring, which symbolizes a rebirth of energy
after a cold and fearful Winter. Such is that while being a period of rebirth for the Earth, the people experiencing the change in seasons are also
undergoing a revival of themselves. Following the theme of rebirth and Spring, 'Alison' talks of a rebirth of love between the months of "Merch"
and "April," which is consequently the time that Spring arrives. However, within 'Alison' we see more elements of longing, that are also found in
'Western Wind.' The poet in 'Alison' seems to be singing to a woman who has looked at him "with lossum cheere," but hasn't agreed or been asked
to marry him yet. While reading this poem and listening to the audio, I felt as though this was his proposal to her; after he tells qualities of how
"longing is ylent me on" and that she's the "fairest may in town," at the very end he asks her to "herkne" to his "roun." He's asking her to listen to his
proposal, take it, and be his wife, for his longing cannot stand anymore. The other poem that involves longing is 'Western Wind,' which I will discuss

significant because it goes to show that the music therapy program at Calvary has been effective, and other hospitals might consider adopting the music
therapy program as well.
At Calvary Hospital the well–being of patients is a priority; it is their mission to provide adequate services to both patients and families This hospital
has strong, dedicated and caring staff members who work as bereavement counselors. Calvary offers bereavement services for young children,
adolescents, and adults. Grieving counseling is offered at no cost and is available for all groups including those who have lost a beloved one at
Calvary or in the community. Social workers understand and are aware of the needs of families and patients; they strive to provide, assist and
support people through an array of services offered at no cost. Through their efforts, social workers seek to help relieve the family's stress and assist
them in coping with the illness of their loved ones.

What Does The Ballad Of Flannery Street Mean.pdf

  • 1. What Does The Ballad Of Flannery Street Mean 'The Ballad of Calvary Street' by James K. Baxter is a poem used effectively in order to develop the key idea of appearance vs.reality. This idea is developed in the poem to reinforce idea of Baxter's underlying dislike for modern suburbanised society. He struggled throughout his life to understand modernized society. Growing up as a Catholic, he eventually came to an epiphany and realised the New Zealand he knew was filled with hypocritical middle class values that he did not respect. In this poem, we are given an insight into these ideas. This poem is relevant to New Zealanders, as James K. Baxter appeared to evaluate New Zealand society harshly and his judgements were always from the perspective of one intimately involved in the social process. James K. Baxter, who found intolerable 'depersonalisation, centralisation and decentralisation' of urban civilisation could still find reason for hope 'in the hearts of people'. His criticisms of national life and his ultimate decision to step out of the mainstream are admired by many. He incorporates the extensive use of religious ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These types of imagery helped readers to understand the misinterpretation of the Baxter family and how dull the suburban life really is. The first religious symbol is in the title of the poem "Ballad of Calvary Street." This is ironic because "Calvary Street" is the street which Jesus walked to his place of crucifixion, therefore having this street name as the title of the poem suggests that the street is not a nice place to live. Another religious image James K. Baxter created throughout the poem was "hammer nails" which is symbolism for Jesus being hung of the cross and "white trellises" is imagery created to represent the cross Jesus was hung on. Throughout the poem there is also a lot of repetition, which emphasises the idea of the dull life that the family lives ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Shocking Ideas of Kate Chopin's The Awakening The Shocking Ideas of The Awakening Ideas that resist existing social boundaries commonly are rejected at first, because people don't want to wake up from their reliable lives. Kate Chopin, however, believed that an awakening was in order, and she attempted to open the eyes of society through her novel The Awakening. The public's reaction to Chopin's novel was not one of acceptance. "Too strong a drink for moral babies, and should be labeled 'poison,'" was the how the Republic described Chopin's work (Seyersted 174). This is how society viewed a novel that is intended to give people insight into the minds and feelings of women as human beings. Of course, over the years, society grew to not only accept Chopin's ideas, but to embrace... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Chopin translated eight of his works and through him developed her style of writing. She shared his concept of a hero : "An isolated world–weary and misanthropic hero who revels in his own sensuality; who trusts in nature and distrusts human relationships, especially love; who experiences a sense of liberation through solitary walks and confidences in his writing... and who is strongly drawn to death as a solution to the repetitive meaninglessness of life's pleasures. (Taylor 160) This was the basic outline for the plot of The Awakening. The book starts with Edna, a New Orleans high society wife and mother who was miserable with her life. While spending the summer in Grand Isle, Edna meets Mademoiselle Reiz whose music is the only thing in which Edna finds happiness. During the summer they fall deeply in love but Robert is scared of being condemned by society and flees to Mexico.(Bloom 11). After Robert leaves, Edna meets Alcee Arobin. Hopeful that Alcee will be like Robert, she takes him into her home. Once there Alcee becomes as controlling as Mr. Pontellier. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Women and Desire: the Unwillingness of Society to Permit... Fulfillment of desire has always been a popular theme in novels, plays and short stories because it has been undeniable and problematic in women throughout history. Novels such as The Awakening, by Kate Chopin, as well as plays like A Streetcar Named Desire and "Portrait of a Madonna," by Tennessee Williams, often show what society would ensure happened to these women if they were ever to follow through and try to fulfill their desires, be them sexual desires or otherwise. According to this novels and plays, women that strive to fulfill their desires eventually come to a tragic end because the society cannot permit a woman to liberate herself from the stigma of the repressed desire without also letting go of the social status that this... In this conversation between Stanley and Blanche: `I don't go in for that stuff.' `What––stuff?' `Compliments to women about their looks. I never met a woman that didn't know is she was good–looking or not without being told, and some of them give themselves credit for more that they've got. I once went out with a doll who said to me –I am the glamorous type– I said –So what?–' `And what did she say then?' `She didn't say nothing. That shut her up like a clam' (Williams 1992). Stanley makes it clear to Blanche that he can see through her. Her unwillingness to stand in direct light and her `fishing for compliments' do not go unnoticed in his eyes and he asks Blanche directly about what happened to Belle Reve, her family home and an allusion to heaven, forcing Blanche to face her ruined past once more. Blanche, distraught, gives Stanley all the papers she has available about Belle Reeve while imputing her disgrace on the sexual desires of the generations before her: There are thousands of papers, stretching back over hundreds of years, affecting Belle Reve as, piece by piece, our improvident grandfathers and father and uncles and brothers exchanged the land for their epic fornications––to put it plainly.... • 4. Military of Ancient Greece Essay Throughout the course of history there have been many great and powerful civilizations. These civilizations made their way to power in many ways including military force, great wealth, and politics. These civilizations include the Assyrians, the Egyptians, the Romans, and in more recent times, the United States of America. Another civilization that is often mentioned to be a part of this prestigious group is that of the Ancient Greeks. The primary reason being the Ancient Greek's military advancement made them superior to the other ancient armies of the time allowing their civilization to grow. It is the same way with armies. The men need smart leaders to issue orders or they will fail to do their job correctly. Luckily enough for the Greek city–states, they did have them and these men were able to help and speed up Greece's rise to power. One great leader of the Greeks was a man by the name of Leonidas. Leonidas was the king of the Spartans during the time of the Persian War. The Spartans were the elite of the elite when it came to military strength. One of the greatest displays of his courage and honor was in his last battle, The Battle of Thermopylae. At the Battle of Thermopylae the Persians were trying to come down into Greece through the mountain pass Thermopylae. The odds were heavily against the Greeks with the Persians numbering in the hundreds of thousands and the Greeks only having a couple thousand Athenians and only 300 Spartan warriors under the command of King Leonidas. The Greeks stopped–up the pass with phalanxes and were slaughtering the Persians. The battle was looking like a major victory for the Greeks until the Persians discovered a back–road on a mountain pass and were about to surround the Greeks. King Leonidas told the remaining Athenian Greeks to flee back to Athens while he and his 300 hundred Spartans held off the Persians. The Spartan army caused massive damage to the Persian army by killing off thousands of them. • 5. How Does Baxter Use Biblical Allusions In 'Ballad Of... The poem 'Ballad Of Calvary Street' written by James K Baxter uses biblical allusions and an extended metaphor for society's expectations of marriage and the roles each partner are expected to follow. These features have been used by Baxter to create a response from his audience and view his ideas from his perspective to get the reader to think the way he does. Biblical allusions have been used in this poem to gain a response from the audience. The title of this poem 'Calvary Street' is a reference to the place of Christ's crucifixion, using this to portray the married couple as they were on the bridge of crucifixion, that neither are happy with their relationship and it will most likely end badly. Another use of biblical allusion is the line "While in Grunt Grotto at the back, Dad sits and reads the Sporting Page." The Grunt Grotto according to Catholic religion is said to be a place for Virgin Mary to reflect on events and decisions. The dad in the text's Grunt Grotto contrasts this theory as he uses his grotto for when he is grumpy, almost like a sulking corner, rather than something good as reflecting and accepting such as Virgin Mary did in her grotto. ... • 6. The Roman Battle Of Rome According to Roman mythology, Roman "warfare" started all the way back with Romulus and Remus. It is said that the two brothers fought against each other, therefore making the first Roman battle. Rome was a peaceful place until the leaders of Rome decided to try to conquer neighboring countries. Roman warfare went on for centuries over bountiful amounts of territories. Over all of these battles the Romans won an amazing amount of those battles. The Romans were usually superior not only in numbers, but they were also superior in strategy. In addition the Roman army's naval warfare was incredibly advanced. Throughout all of Roman history Roman ships were propelled by sails and rowers. These giant warships were not only used to ram into other ships, they were also used to transport troops to other lands. In order to ram other ships, the Romans wrapped bronze around the tip of the ship then ram the bow of the Roman's ship into the side of the enemy ship. This tactic of ramming the enemy ship with the bronze–tipped front of the ship was not the Romans' invention, rather it was the Greeks that had first used this tactic, and the Romans knew this was a fantastic tactic on the grounds that it had worked in the past. Sadly, the Romans barely had the opportunity to use their naval warfare tactics as the greater amounts of their battles happened on land. Therefore the ships and naval warfare tactics were mostly used for defending Italy from the sea. Roman infantry, or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Essay On First Mt. Calvary History Why First Mt. Calvary History is Important The Bible shows us that history is important. Christianity is a historical faith. God reveals himself in history. The people of God celebrated God's mighty acts of deliverance in the past – like the exodus from Egypt – as an incentive to look to God for salvation in their present and future. An example is Psalm 145, rehearsing God's mighty deeds in the past, as an encouragement to trust God in the future: One generation shall laud your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts. . .. Rather, we celebrate God's goodness to us in our history, to fortify us for the immense challenge of our future. Some theologian once defined tradition as 'the life of the Holy Spirit in the church.' Looking at our history helps us to see what the Holy Spirit has been saying to us and doing among us through the years. We discern in the continuities of our heritage something of God's purpose for us as a church. TheBible tells us that ' Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever' (Hebrews 13:8). It's about some of these continuities – the distinctive characteristics of First Mt. Calvary– Speak today. Today we pay tribute to all who have labored in and for First Mt. As you rank up in the enlisted side here in the 11th ACR you realize that we really are the best Regiment, but as a young private it can seem unreal and your mindset is different. I just completed the three week course of Basic Leadership in Camp Parks CA, and as I learned about all the different units and patches the soldiers wear in their shoulder, I realized that we really are the best, so I wore the black horse patch during the course with such pride, knowing that warriors are made in our unit, and I say this because all the Soldiers from the 11th ACR graduated this course with a GPA of 90% and above. • 9. The Dragon Can T Dance Essay In the novel The Dragon Can't Dance by Earl Lovelace, the character Aldrick faced obstacles in order to find his purpose, self–identity, and guidance. Aldrick journey started to become misleading and even problematic due to his overwhelming uncertainties. It is very difficult to fulfill one's goal if mixed emotions and the inability to choose one's opposing choices intervene. Considering these circumstances, I believe that it is fair to say that Lovelace included many examples that revealed Aldrick to be an ambivalent character. The construction of Aldrick's character would not have been possible without the assistance of ambivalence. • 10. The Atonement And Its Effect On The Cross Of Calvary The Atonement The word "Atonement" is frequently used in the Old Testament. Nevertheless, in regards to the New Testament, the King James Version of the Bible mentions "Atonement," only once, which is found in (Rom. 5:11.) Furthermore, other versions, such as, the NRSVA, NIV, ASV and others uses the word "Reconciliation" as an alternative. Perhaps, when one seeks the etymology and the meaning of the word, this phrase simply can be seen as at–one–ment, which can be translated as the state of oneness of two who had been alienated from each other, or reconciled, in other words, two entities, in this case, God and humanity who was separated once, together again. In reality, atonement is reconciliation. Thus, it is used to denote the effect that resulted from the death of Christ on the Cross of Calvary. The need for atonement or reconciliation began in the Garden of Eden. Perhaps, God knowing about Adam and Eve's actions and transgressions of His commandments intentionally loves them and seeks for them. In addition to that, the Biblical narrative suggests that God went out of His way to meet with them, subsequent to their sin. However, (Gen. 3:8.) gives the impression that the Deity and humankind met up regularly and that this was a routinely encounter. This suggests that God had a close relationship with humans, the only creature in which God had put something of Him inside of them. When sin entered the human race, however, the need of a new approach became more acute. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The battle at Cannae would prove to be the battle that made Hannibal famous, and nearly bring the entire Roman Empire to its knees. For the Carthaginians the battle brought great victory and support to their interracial army. For the Romans it brought symbolic importance and lessons learned as well as the need for military strategic adaptation. Meanwhile Hasdrubal, Hannibal's staff officer, who heeded the Carthaginian heavy Calvary, had completely routed the Roman right wing and now brought his horsemen around behind the roman Legions, attacking the allied horse on their left. Already disorientated from the attack by the Numidians, the Carthaginian heavy Calvary on the Romans rear proved to be too much and completed the collapse of the Roman left wing. I went to look at the house I liked what I saw. I was ready to board. The owner met me at the house to tell me the person there before me will move out by August 5th. I had to move into the owner house with his family. Nice people but strange spirits. Two weeks later after staying at the house of the owner it was time for me to move to the house. After staying in the house for six weeks, around the second week of August I became unemployed. These issues, including course duration and student responsibility, directly contribute to the outcomes of community–engaged projects. However, throughout my service–learning experience this semester I have identified a considerable obstacle linked to community work: communication. • 14. Analysis Of The Book ' With Lee ' With Lee in Virginia by G. A. Henty illustrates the adventures of Vincent Wingfield, an heir to a Virginia plantation known as the Orangery, before, during, and just after he fights for the South as a part of the calvary, even though he is only 16. During the story, he lives with his mother and sisters, because just after he came back from school in England, his father died. It begins when Vincent complains about the overseer of the plantation, Jonas Pearson, because he was beating a slave. Vincent believes that slaves should be treated well, and his mother agrees, but Jonas always had an excuse to his actions. Not long after this, while riding his new horse, Wildfire, he sees Andrew Jackson, the son of the owner of a near plantation called Cedar, beating a slave and his wife. This angers Vincent so much that he stops Andrew by getting in a fight and knocking him out. The Jacksons decide to sell the slaves wife to torture him even more. Vincent is able to secretly buy the slave, named Dinah, and her infant son. Tony, the husband, was able to stay in contact secretly, but because he was so miserable and tortured at the plantation, he ran away to the forests. Vincent, to help Tony, gets him aboard a boat to England. The Jacksons are immediately suspicious of Vincent after finding out he bought Dinah, but they couldn't find enough proof to make their allegations public. Over the four–week duration of this project, I proceeded to question my ability to communicate effectively with others as well as my true value as a group partner. While many of the complications that arose during my work with the Calvary Chapel of Caldwell caused significant discouragement and aggravation, I am now able to look back and identify and positive aspects my partner and I were able to achieve and reflect on the changes that could have been applied to make our project even more successful. This research paper is the culmination of a wonderful and enlightening course offered by Calvary Chapel Bible College; a verse–by–verse, in–depth study, into the Book of Genesis. The lectures were given by Pastor Clark Van Wick of Calvary Chapel Bible Fellowship, in Temecula, California. Pastor Van Wick not only has a deep knowledge of God 's revelation to His people, but he pours out the love ofJesus into his students hearts throughout each lecture. The enthusiasm and joy Pastor Van Wick has forBible exposition is felt by his students in every verse. Thank you, Pastor Van Wick! The Book of Genesis; its purpose and divisions. The Book of Genesis is the first of sixty–six individual revelations of God Himself to us, His creation, whom He obviously loves more than we could possibly comprehend. I would hope to be able to grasp a small iota of that love when I finally am able to stand in His presence. Genesis is foundational; the necessary table legs that the succeeding sixty–five books stand boldly upon. "If the Bible were somehow expurgated of the Book of Genesis (as many people today would prefer), the rest of the Bible would be incomprehensible. It would be like a building without a ground floor, or a bridge with no support."1 Genesis is appropriately named, as it is the Greek word ОіООЅОµПѓО№П‚, which is defined as birth, lineage, or descent. I would venture at this point that Genesis should not be limited to one, but encompasses all three defining words, in great detail. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Use of Christian Symbolism in The Old Man and the Sea Christian symbolism, especially images that refer to the crucifixion of Christ, is present throughout The Old Man and the Sea. During the old man's battle with the marlin, his palms are cut by his fishing cable. Given Santiago's suffering and willingness to sacrifice his life, the wounds are suggestive of Christ's stigmata, and Hemingway goes on to portray the old man as a Christ–like martyr. As soon as the sharks arrive, Santiago makes a noise one would make "feeling the nail go through his hands and into the wood." And the old man's struggle up the hill to his village with his mast across his shoulders is evocative of Christ's march toward Calvary. Even the position in which ... Even the position in which Santiago collapses on his bed–face down with his arms out straight and the palms of his hands up–brings to mind the image of Christ suffering on the cross. Hemingway employs these images in the final pages of the novella in order to link Santiago to Christ, who exemplified transcendence by turning loss into gain, defeat into triumph, and even death into renewed life. Life from Death Death is the unavoidable force in the novella, the one fact that no living creature can escape. But death, Hemingway suggests, is never an end in itself: in death there is always the possibility of the most vigorous life. The reader notes that as Santiago slays the marlin, not only is the old man reinvigorated by the battle, but the fish also comes alive "with his death in him." Life, the possibility of renewal, necessarily follows on the heels of death. Whereas the marlin's death hints at a type of physical reanimation, death leads to life in less literal ways at other points in the novella. The book's crucifixion imagery emphasizes the cyclical connection between life and death, as does Santiago's battle with the marlin. He calls them mimesis1 (prefiguration), minesis2 (configuration), and mimesis3 (refiguration). Ricoeur states, "A prefigured time becomes a refigured time through the mediation of a configured time." A Plot of Calvary In this section, I will first outline the plot of Calvary. Then I will point out that there are two major themes in the film. The first one is the human side of a Catholic priest. The second one is the Catholic Church. Calvary opens with the line from Augustine, "Do not despair; one of the thieves was saved. Do not presume; one of the thieves was damned." John Michael McDonagh attempts to tell a story of Father James Lavelle (Brendan Gleeson) in tension and in darkness. The story starts in a confessional, where Father James hears the voice of an obscured penitent about his story. A priest had raped him since he was seven. Now he is going to kill Father James at the beach one week, because Father James is a good priest. With full knowledge of Father James' innocence, he explains that killing a good priest would catch more attention than killing a bad one. After all, the abuser is dead. • 25. The Director Of Calvary By John Michael Mcdonagh I. Introduction The director of Calvary, John Michael McDonagh describes the film as an exploration of human themes, such as despair and death, for which the contemporary Irish social context and the reality of the churches in Ireland provide its stage. As a black comedy, this film seems to caricature the context in an exaggerated manner, yet it certainly features a secularized town of Ireland. However, at the same time, the director says that he wanted to make a movie about "a good priest." It seems to me that what Father James pleads with his colleague Father Leary tells the viewer what being a good priest means: "integrity." In my configuration of the plot, over the two weeks of time, Father James learns to be a good priest, who can genuinely empathize with the life stories of his parishioners, and, in so doing, leads them to authentic forgiveness (or reconciliation with the self and others). The movie certainly features the themes of empathy, forgiveness, and reconciliation. According to a film critic Cara Buckley, "Calvary is rived with dark humor, though its deeper themes of forgiveness and morality have prompted viewers to present Mr. McDonagh with philosophical struggles of their own." In the film, we see forgiveness in action as father and daughter are reconciled with each other and reaffirm their love. Father James' interactions with Fitzgerald are not rough. Yet finally, Fitzgerald sincerely confesses his sense of emptiness, and Father ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Analysis Of The Book ' The Dragon Can 't Dance ' Essay Elinor Johnson, Brandi Cathey World Literature Amanda Bryan November 24, 2015 The Aftermath of Colonial Rule in The Dragon Can't Dance The effects of colonialism are ingrained into every facet of society in Trinidad. The novel The Dragon Can't Dance written by Earl Lovelace, has many aspects of a postcolonial society, from the way people act on a day to day basis to the traditions upheld during Carnival. There is enough evidence to argue that the town and all its residents are experiencing postcolonialism, or the aftermath of colonial rule. Three central time frames in the novel will support this: before Carnival, during and after Carnival, and after Aldrick's six year term in prison. These scenes in the novel depict this theme and demonstrate the postcolonial values that still dominate Calvary Hill. Postcolonialism also affects Pariag and is demonstrated by how he is treated by his neighbors. Finally we will deconstruct the idea of the "Carnival" and figure out the relationship of this to the Postcolonial Theory and how this is a reflection of colonial rule. Postcolonial theory focuses on the aftermath of colonial rule and the way former colonizers and colonized people interact in society. In many instances of postcolonialism the original culture of the colonized is lost through cultural colonialism. Mimicry is an effect of this in which the colonized people begin to take on the customs of the colonizers. Another is hybridity when the two cultures are are mixed and a new ... • 31. Atonement And Its Effect On The Cross Of Calvary The word "Atonement" is frequently used in the Old Testament. The need of atonement or reconciliation began in the Garden of Eden. Perhaps, God knowing of Adam and Eve's actions and transgressions of His commandments intentionally loves them and seeks for them. Also, he gave his own life, so that humanity may receive a chance in life, whereas, before death was our only option...The victor? It is Christ Jesus who has won the struggle over death and the devils wicked, and deceitful temptations. Thus, sin is still currently present, however, Christ has claimed death at the cross of Calvary, (Luke 23). How does one theologically unite these metaphors? I would like to believe the gospel of Luke does an excellent job at uniting the metaphors of Jesus' passion and atonement. For example, the gospel of Luke demonstrates the story of Jesus and how he struggled and suffered tremendously as a human. As Jesus ages he teaches the people of the land the gospels and directs them to Christ. Jesus has experienced joy, sadness, stress, faith, hope, hospitality and etc. In conclusion, the gospel of Luke ties in these metaphors in the journey of Jesus and shows us his infinite love in the midst of ... • 38. Comparing Sunset On Calvary And Adam Lay Bound When speaking of religion, the Middle–English poets focused intently on the birth, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. They also focused on the Virgin Mary. All three poems assigned– 'Sunset on Calvary,' 'I Sing of a Maiden,' and 'Adam Lay Bound' – all speak of the Virgin Mary prominently. Written in 'Sunset on Calvary,' the poet describes "Marye" as having a "faire rode," meaning she is pretty and pleasing to the eye, but not overtly sensuous. The poet "reweth" Mary and "thy sone," but the reader could receive the impression that the poet somehow pities Mary more than her son Jesus. The poem 'I Sing of a Maiden' is clearly dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This poet describes her as "makelees" and that "wel swich a lady Godes moder ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Peeking into the poem 'The Cuckoo Song' the song speaks of "sumer" coming in so that the cuckoo bird can sing once again. Also, another line within the poem says that the wood is "springth." What is interesting is that wood is the element of Spring, which symbolizes a rebirth of energy after a cold and fearful Winter. Such is that while being a period of rebirth for the Earth, the people experiencing the change in seasons are also undergoing a revival of themselves. Following the theme of rebirth and Spring, 'Alison' talks of a rebirth of love between the months of "Merch" and "April," which is consequently the time that Spring arrives. However, within 'Alison' we see more elements of longing, that are also found in 'Western Wind.' The poet in 'Alison' seems to be singing to a woman who has looked at him "with lossum cheere," but hasn't agreed or been asked to marry him yet. While reading this poem and listening to the audio, I felt as though this was his proposal to her; after he tells qualities of how "longing is ylent me on" and that she's the "fairest may in town," at the very end he asks her to "herkne" to his "roun." He's asking her to listen to his proposal, take it, and be his wife, for his longing cannot stand anymore. The other poem that involves longing is 'Western Wind,' which I will discuss further in my single poem ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
