1. David
Hellman
–
Graphic
design
artist
for
Braid
the
award
winning
game
by
Jonathan
Blow.
David
Hellman
is
a
professional
artist
for
web-‐comics,
and
graphic
novels,
he
has
however
recently
done
the
artwork
for
the
awards
winning
game
entitled
Braid.
David
had
always
wanted
to
do
game
artwork,
he
found
out
about
Jonathan
Blow
and
his
prototype
game
from
a
friend
who
had
tested
at
the
Game
Developers
Conference
after
being
put
in
touch
with
Jonathan
Blow
he
went
through
an
interviewing
stage
which
involved
some
sample
drawings
and
was
later
hired.
It’s
clear
from
David’s
early
abstract
art
that
he
want
to
do
a
painted
look
for
Braid
especially
with
the
backgrounds,
for
the
platforms
and
objects
within
the
level
there’s
an
obvious
attention
to
detail
with
a
computer
tablet
sketch
look
for
the
outlines.
This
kind
of
unconventional
art
design
for
an
independent
game
is
the
same
style
trait
that
I
was
going
for
in
our
game
giving
the
word
and
the
objects
init
a
hand
crafted
look
rather
than
the
traditional
independent
game
look
of
pixel
art.
2. Due
to
the
design
having
a
critical
impact
on
how
the
game
feels
when
being
played
David
had
some
input
into
the
method
of
the
game
such
as
the
cloud
cannon
which
release
clouds,
before
David’s
idea
the
clouds
that
were
in
the
game
at
the
time
worked
very
differently
and
David’s
cloud
cannon
made
the
experience
much
better.
I’ve
learnt
an
interesting
way
of
doing
a
project
from
looking
at
David’s
process
on
his
blog
and
I
have
to
say
it
does
seem
genius
in
it
simplicity
and
inspiration
inspiring
process,
do
some
experimentation
within
a
design
brief’s
boundaries
and
then
develop
the
good
designs
further.
After
you’ve
established
a
series
of
different
backgrounds
you
can
focus
on
the
platforms
your
actors
will
stand
on.
A
design
feature
I
wouldn’t
of
thought
to
do
myself,
which
actually
gives
a
nice
effect
for
a
background
design
is
the
use
of
paint.
It
gives
more
faded
pleasing
to
the
eye
colours
than
pencils,
pens,
or
computer
colours.
Braid
has
won
multiple
awards;
the
independent
games
festival
award
2006,
GameSpot’s
best
original
downloadable
console
game
2008,
GameSpot’s
best
platformer
2008,
GameSpot’s
best
licensed
music
2008,
xbox
live
arcade
game
of
the
year
in
2008,
and
many
others
for
the
game’s
story,
design,
and
music.
