We identify as members of organizations easily (I’m a Husker, a Tri-Delt, a Soprano, a farmer, a firefighter), and it makes sense—we spend most of our time living, breathing, and organizing with others. In this project, we are asking you to focus your attention on how organizations negotiate and change (inequalities) of power. Embodying the ethic and metaphor of the “Organizational Detective,” you are tasked with questioning, tracing, and analyzing how an organization of your choice attempts social change and the communication about or through which that action functions. This isn’t an easy task; social change can be a complicated, messy, and sometimes awkward topic—which is exactly why we need to explore the potentials and pitfalls that arise when this work is done! This perspective is a bit of a shift in how we might typically think of organizations generally—instead of asking you to look at the communication used to manage an organization or drive efficiency, we want you to think about the social change communication that is organizing the people, objects, and purposes of this group, as well as the power imbued within those actions and its many consequences. Part II In Part I of this assignment, you selected an urban “community” of interest to you and created a simple community profile based on your analysis of some comparative statistics that characterize your community. In Part II of the assignment, you are challenged to do a more critical, in-depth analysis of a narrowly-focused aspect of your selected community. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.

1. You will be asked to analyze an organizational culture. This could be the organization you work with, or it could be some other organization to which you have access. Remember that clubs, associations, and churches can be considered organizations. Research (data gathering) should include (but does not need to be limited to) mainly primary sources. Primary data is the data collected by the researcher themselves, i.e. interview observation action research case studies life histories questionnaires ethnographic research Secondary sources are data that already exists Previous research Official statistics Mass media products Diaries Letters Government reports Web information Historical data and information Collect your data and analyze it. Describe how you collected the data (observation, interviews, surveys). Then, analyze the organizational culture along three dimensions: artifacts, values, and underlying assumptions. Give examples of behavior, speech, or symbols that illustrate your findings. This paper should be 5-8
