In Ernest Hemingway's story "Indian Camp," a young boy goes with his father to a nearby logging
camp to aid a woman undergoing a difficult labor. In T. Coraghessan Boyle's story "If the River was
Whiskey," a boy yearns to take a fishing trip with his father, but when the two finally make that
journey, the trip does not live up to Tiller's expectations. The stories have different plots, but the
conflict they explore are the same – a complicated relationship between a father and a son. Nick
from "Indian Camp" and Tiller from "If the River was Whiskey" come to the same revelation about
their fathers, by the ends of the stories, both boys understand that their fathers are seriously flawed.
An important similarity between the two fathers is that both are severely flawed and their sons come
to acknowledge this. Nick from "Indian Camp," notices his father's flaws when they arrive at the
shanties where the Indians live. Both Nick and his father enter to hear a woman screaming in pain.
This later causes Nick to plead with his father asking, "Oh, Daddy can't you give her something to

My Experience At My Church
Have you ever felt like you were getting called upon to do something? I've experienced this after my
dad passed away. I felt God calling me to serve my church. I started to become more active in my
church's faithful followers group. I felt God come into my life. I got the chance to go on this
amazing trip that changed my life around.
I was sitting in my confirmation class on Sunday afternoon, when my teacher, Melanie, was talking
about all the upcoming events. She had an eye–catching video about the National Catholic Youth
Conference or NCYC. The group from two years about created the video. They went into detail of
what we'd get out of the trip. The thing that stuck out the most was the unique feeling of God's
presents. It was time to pay for our spot on this trip. The cost was $50, so you would have a seat on
the bus. This frightened me because I didn't know if I wanted to go for sure. I was going to be
around 200,000 other people, only seven being ones from my church. Preparing for this trip was
time consuming. We had to dedicate all our free time this summer to setting up fundraisers. The trip
was $510 per person. Our fundraising consisted of selling Pastry Puffins, bake sales, and 50/50
tickets. Also there were people who would donate so they could get a free pancake breakfast out of

Have you ever thought that three completely different stories might have something in common? It
might seem unlikely, but now you can change what you previously thought! The short stories
Contents of a Dead Man's Pockets by Jack Finney, The Leap by Louise Erdrich, and The Trip by
Laila Lalami, all have their similarities and differences on several aspects. This can be demonstrated
through the topics of setting, conflict, characters, and theme. These topics help make up the plot of
each story. No story is the same, but they can have similar messages or themes meant for the
audience. Some can argue that these three short stories are completely different, but other
individuals differ. These main elements from each story can be both, depending on one's point of
view.
The setting is a good example of both similarities and differences. For instance, the setting helped
shape the story and form the plot. In Contents, the main character (Tom) opens the window in his
apartment on a breezy night. "...caught in the dying current flowing through the narrow opening."
(pg 20). An important paper gets blown out the window, and eleven stories up, the story begins.
During The Leap, the narrator explains that out west, you could see any in–coming weather because
the land was so flat. "I have lived in the west, where you can see the weather coming for miles..."

Reflection Paper
It was Mission Sunday at First Reformed Church, sitting in a pew with my youth group when I was
given the opportunity to go to Eden, Jamaica the summer after my freshman year. My youth pastor,
Ross, was standing on the stage in church describing the past trip that he went on with our high
school youth group that past summer. He talked about the mission work they did, the relationships
that were created, and the amazing views they saw. He then went on to say that the next group of
kids that were the incoming freshman through seniors. That was me! I was so excited! I really
wanted to go! (3) After church, I ran up to my mom and asked, "Mom! I could go to Jamaica next

My Reflection Of Nature
The main way the readings, reflections, and discussions with classmates has contributed to my
understanding of how to incorporate nature is the variety of perceptions. I really enjoyed how every
individual in the class had their own take on an issue and a way to connect it to nature. For example,
there were at least three people who decided to focus on the issue of loss and grief for the
assignment that was shared over the camping trip. Even though the topic was discussed by three
people, each person used a different part of nature to depict their unique metaphor. Another way
completing the classwork with peers has contributed to my understanding of how to incorporate
nature is that the information from peers has displayed to me incorporating nature does not need to
be difficult.
Since the beginning of the semester, I was worried about how I would incorporate nature into the
location I am currently at for practicum. Due to the fact that I am a student, I have to record, which
limits my ability to take clients outside. Also, there is an issue with confidentiality as soon as I walk
out the door with one of my clients. There are a large number of "what if's", for example, what if the
client and I bump into the client's peers. These thoughts made adding nature into my practicum site
seem impossible and I was worried about how I was going to role–play with a partner on how to get
clients outside.

This summer, I learned I could do some athletic things in the most stereotypical, cliche way
imaginable. I climbed a mountain. My dad and I had gone up to the North Shore on a father–son
trip. I am not at all athletically gifted, so I was not looking forward to it. I could not envision myself
climbing a mountain. To climb a mountain you had to be agile and surefooted. I was neither of those
things. I was, and still am, very clumsy. Also my hand–eye coordination is egregious. I was exactly
the opposite of what you needed to be to climb a mountain. I was academically gifted, but didn't
play any sports and had no athletic experience whatsoever. My dad was also very academically
gifted, but he was also a stellar athlete. He competed in track, pommel horse, rings, and rowing
when he was in school. I proved deficient at all of these sports, having tried them many times. But
we were still going to climb the mountain.
When we arrived at the mountain my dad showed me the narrow gravel path we would be
following. It was covered in mud, leaves and sticks. It would have been more suitable for a deer to
climb through than a human. I then realized I should not have worn socks with sandals. My dad
handed me a backpack. Dad said, "Max, this pack is full of various medical supplies we might need
in an emergency. It is of utmost importance that you carry this with us the entire way up the
mountain."

Introduction
This report contains the information collected from a client meeting. This meeting consisted of
myself as a social worker employed by SANITI at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology
(NMIT) and four year 2 social work students. These students express concerns around the cost of
their Noho Marae trip. They stated that half the students in their class were apprehensive that the
costs were doubling. I applied multiple social work theories to inform my practice when working
with groups. I used aspects of solution–focused therapy in which we looked at the solutions to solve
the problem (Institute of Solution Focused Therapy, n.d.). Although we initially looked at the
problem, we did not focus on it, instead chose to focus primarily on what the group could possibly
to change the outcome of their problem (O'Connell, 2005). This is because although talking about
the problem may be of help, this is not going to produce a solution (Institute of Solution Focused
Therapy, n.d.). The use of scaling questions also stem from this approach (NSPCC, 2014). Scaling
questions allow the client to place a numbered rating on a question which helps to understand the
level of importance (PACWRC, n.d.). Other tools of this therapy include the 'miracle question', I
also used strengths–based practice to help base the meeting around the future and solutions
(Hammond, 2010). This meant that the meeting would be client–led instead of myself. This was

Sitting in my room here in Denmark and looking out at the grey clouds and few sunbeams from the
sky. It reminds me of the student trip with my class a few weeks ago. To travel from a place to
another is somehow always special for me. I think it is interesting that I can go into a plane and

Summary: A Day In Vietnam
This day was just another ordinary day in Vietnam. The UH–1 Helicopter crew consisted of the Pilot
CW2 Baez, Co–Pilot WO1 Rawlinson, Crew Chief Martinez, and Door Gunner Kephart. They
assigned them an "Ash and Trash" mission to resupply a unit 8 miles outside the village of Pleiku.
The Ash and Trash missions, designed to resupply units with food, water, ammo, mail, clean
clothing, and replacement troops along with taking trash and Soldiers going on R&R and sick call.
When this crew woke up on April 1, 1967, they had no idea it would be an unforgettable day for all

In the fall of 2014 I was presented with the opportunity to go on a missions trip to Zambia. We had a
few meetings about this trip and interest grew. Next thing I knew it was March of 2015 and I was
headed off to Haiti. Plans had changed but I could never have imagined what great impact this
would have on my life. Haiti is not know for much but it is known for being poor. This might
dissuade people from visiting, but for me it was exactly what I needed. We got to Haiti and even in
the airport saw the people desperate for money to feed themselves and their families. We took a ten
passenger plane up the mountain and as we flew we were able to see the poverty in the towns below.

Team Gemstone Research Paper
Team Gemstone was a great experience for me. I thoroughly enjoy my time in the
challenge/adventure course. First, we split off into our teams and completed different team building
activities. My team, team WALK, completed the lava challenge. We were given eight wooden
blocks and had to get our entire team to the opposite side with out touching the ground or leaving
blocks unattended. Overall, we completed the challenge successfully and felt good about our
teamwork experience. Next, we moved onto the ropes tower. Here, we had the option of climbing to
the top of the tower while attached to a harness and rope. This was also a fun experience for me, and
hopefully everyone else involved. My favorite component of the experience was the team activities.

The Importance Of My Trip To Japan
I woke up to the rumbling of the plane beneath me. The scenery around me was different, there was
no Diamond Head, no scraggly cliffs and golden beaches. Yet it was still so appealing to me. It was
everything I hoped for, and I was no less than ecstatic. My first trip to Japan and I had no idea what
to expect, but at the same time I expected everything. This was my fourth attempt of going to Japan.
I had tried many other times through various means such as competitions, or cultural enrichment
programs. Each attempt was a new loss to me but the phrase "give up" wasn't in my thesaurus. Now
I was on one of the biggest trips I could imagine courtesy of the Hiroshima Kenjin Kai, a group that
was all about sticking to your roots and learning everything available about your history; this trip
was the highest level of that achievable in my opinion. I could finally reap the fruits of my
dedication to my wants, and at the same time learn about my family's geographical origin. This was
a trip that showed the greater differences and similarities in culture and history than I was
accustomed to. Things learned and accepted both in the classroom and from TV would be thrown

Having read the book Williwaw Winds by Sally Bair, I find Jacob Bergren to be an interesting
character. Generally, Jake makes morally good choices. He does anything he can to help whoever is
in need. Ever since he was young his family and he volunteered on Thanksgiving preparing
Thanksgiving meals for the homeless shelters (Bair 42). Another example of Jake helping others is
on the boat when ice was covering all of their work. He ran downstairs to grab his dumbbells. With
his pair of dumbbells Freddy and he beat away the ice and they got to work right away (60). At the
end of the book when the crew is being rescued the swimmer plans to pull Jake out of the freezing
water before Patrick but being the courageous person he is, Jack insists that Patrick goes first. Jake
wisely made this decision based on his previous knowledge of Patrick and his fear of loss and being
alone. Patrick was very afraid as the boat was going down; all he could think about was losing his
father, the skipper. He already lost his mom due to cancer so I am sure the thought of losing his dad

I just finished Colorado! Hiked to Cumbres pass and connected my foot steps. I've spent the last
three days hitch hiking 1,000 miles north to Helena, Montana, from here I'll hike the last 364 miles
to Canada. Hitching north, I relived the last three months in reverse. I flew through all the mountain
towns once again. It was a beautiful ride. I meet all kinds of wonderful people, hippies, ranchers and
old ski bums. The coolest part was seeing the land slowly change from dramatic mountains to desert

There were fires up here about a month ago. The forest service was forced to close sections of the

not Florida. During her realization, she accidently kicked her cat, that she just had to bring with her,

Road Trip
The scorching sun was up, and everyone could not help but complain about the hot summer. Since
the previous day, the weather has been only favorable for outdoors. We live in this small town,
Rockville, in the Southwest with minimal population. The town's development and interest in
national matters is minimal and there is little regard for politics. Only a notable number of citizens
have interests in technology and most of the town's population consists of old men and women. The
fabric that holds the town together is a specific type of culture whereby most parents adhere to
conservative parenting.
Even at school, not everything is done like any other school in the country. The program is rather
slow, whereby not everyone attends class every day and especially during summer seasons like this,
we are allowed free breaks regularly. Together with my friends Jay and Kevin, we structured a plan
for a road trip outside town. Ideas like these usually pop out in our conversations, but never once
had we been able to make them happen. This was our lucky day since the plan directly fit to the free
break the school principal had allowed due to the surging heat in that Friday afternoon. It was one of
those golden moments in life when one feels everything is falling into place.
At first, it had only been a lame joke since Jay insisted that we go by car and not use any public
transport.

A Hunting Trip with Friends in "Hunters in the Snow" by...
"Hunters in the Snow" by Tobias Wolff is about three friends–Tub,Kenny, and Frank–who have
arranged to go hunting which is something that they do on a regular basis. Kenny taunts Tub about
him being overweight and Frank about his affair with a 15 year old girl. Throughout the entire day
of the hunting trip, Kenny was taunting the two men. A series of events takes place on the hunting
trip which makes it noticeable that their problems are much deeper than just one day of hunting,
Kenny taunts and bullies the men on a more regular basis than just this one day of hunting which
leads up to the men letting Kenny die in the back of the truck. Kenny showed that he does not care
about the men or their surroundings during the peak of the story when he shoots the dog in the head.
When Tub asks him why he did that he replies "He was just barking". (Pg.170) Kenny says that Tub
will be next to be shot as he continues to just shoot anything in sight. Kenny than turns to Tub and
says that he hates him while pointing the gun at him. Tub doesn't want to be shot and killed like the
dog so he takes matters into his own hands and shoots Kenny first. Once Tub shoots Kenny he goes
into a moment of regret thinking what did he just do? Asking Kenny if he is okay, saying that they
need to call a ambulance, saying almost that he will "rat" himself out in order to make sure that
Kenny is okay. Tub does care what Kenny and Frank think of him which makes him the most

Coming into community contact week (CCW) I was simultaneously excited and anxious. I was
excited for the adventure side of it and a trip to a place that I hadn't visited before but anxious about
my groups ability to work together due to a lack of vocal enthusiasm and planning prior to the trip.
However, by the time we arrived in Wanganui and had sorted out group dinner for the week I
realised that this group would actually work well together. I found it extremely enjoyable working

to my town, it is about double the population but at least half the number of people seen on the
streets. During some free time, I walked down the main street with another from the group, we saw

lots of people walking along the riverside, and by a lot I mean about 10 within 10 minutes. I couldn't
quite work out the reason that Wanganui seemed like a ghost town, it certainly wasn't the cold, or
lack of shops. Eventually I put it down to a lack of busses for what, to me, seems like a widespread
community.
Our group of 11 students had a few bonding activities although only one involved all of us.

From Mexico to Canada, a bike ride of about 1829 miles, ninety six year old Bill Pierce has started
his journey through the middle of the United States. Bill Pierce has been contemplating the idea of
his travels for about ten years but didn't really get around to it, but he said, "About a year ago I
retired, and I sat down and said to myself either i'm going to do this or i'm not going to do it, times
going to run out eventually." After finally making up his mind he decided he wanted to take on the

The Big Move to College
Moving away from home has been one of the biggest challenges that I have had to face so far in the
eighteen years of my life. Moving from my home town to the collge dorm was a difficult transition
that was necessary for growing up both mentally and physically as an individual. The little more
than five hundred miles that separates me from my friends and family has allowed me to become the
person I am today, and the distance allows me to grow and become more familiar with things that
are a whole new experience for me. One of the many new things that I have had to deal with was
making new friends in my environment.

Although I hated to see her go, I knew that I would never branch out and meet new people with my
mother present. As we said goodbye, the tears swelled up in her eyes and it seemed like the harder
she tried to prevent the tears from falling; the faster they streamed down her cheek. Eventually my
mom got back into her car and began the long trip home. There I was, alone in the middle of the
street outside of my dorm. I walked back into Cowden, up the flight of stairs and into my dorm

For the next few days, I was alone in my room until my roommate, Emily, one of my closest friends

me she was here. I ran down and helped her bring all of her belongings up the stairs and I was
relieved that she was here with me. I finally was not alone in this world. We had been told numerous
times that rooming together would be a bad idea because we would hang out only with each other,
and we would not meet anyone new at school. For the first few days Emily was there, we didn't talk
to anyone else and I began to think that the warnings we had received were going to be true.
