Persuasive Speech On Columbus Day
Every year on October 12th Americans across the country celebrate Columbus day. A day honoring the famous (or infamous) explorer Christopher
Columbus , famous for supposedly discovering America (The Bahamas today). Until recently most people have celebrated the day without a second
thought, but now there is more evidence that Christopher Columbus wasn't just a peaceful explorer. When I was younger , I was taught that
Christopher Columbus "sailed the ocean blue , in 1492". I was taught to think of a hero ; The man who discovered America. Columbus day to me
was just a day off , where I didn't have to go to school. I feel that a fair amount of Americans today think of Columbus day the same way. I think very
few people actually take the time

Why Columbus Day Should Not Be a Holiday Christopher Columbus has been viewed as a hero for several centuries. Children in elementary schools
all over the nation are taught that he discovered America. However, there were many other people who were indigenous to the land already and the
Vikings arrived in America almost 500 years before Columbus.Christopher Columbus, as it turned out, was responsible for widespread genocide; he
permitted his men to rape, murder, mutilate and enslave indigenous people. The evil deeds of Columbus far outweigh the few accomplishments he
achieved. It doesn't make sense for the United States to recognize this supposed Christian with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These nomads continued moving all the way to South America. By the time Europeans arrived in America, there were already at least forty to fifty
million indigenous people inhabiting the land (Faber 4–5). Other explorers, from Norway, Greenland, and Iceland reached America centuries before
Columbus (Faber ix). Although these people attempted to live in this new land, they didn't stay long, and failed to create a lasting historical impact
(Faber 20–26).
Columbus never even walked on what we now call the United States of America. Where ever he did land, he was motivated only by his own greed.
Columbus came for the gold, spices, and slaves. In his diary, he mentioned gold 75 times just in the first two weeks, alone (Katz 13). Indians who
weren't able to find gold, were punished by having their hands cut off. Most slaves died en route to Spain. Many Indian females were taken as sex
slaves, some as young as nine and ten years old. Columbus forced cooperation from the Indians by disfiguring them and using them as examples. Even
worse, he used hunting dogs to tear the Indians apart. Many natives committed suicide, and murdered their own children to save them from such a
horrible life. Those who survived the voyage were worked to death. Still, another huge portion of these Indians died from disease brought over by

Columbus Day and Christopher Columbus Essay
"In fourteen hundred ninety–two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue", starts the beginning of one of history's biggest fabrications. We teach our children
to be honest and truthful, but then lie to them for the first six to eight years of their educational lives about their own history. For in fact, Columbus did
not discover America and did not unveil the myth regarding the world being flat. At the moment, I have yet to discover ifChristopher Columbus ever
discovered anything at all. Knowing the meaning of discovery, the land that Columbus reached from his voyage and the unorthodox events that
occurred after Columbus' adventure; I do not celebrate Columbus Day. I enjoy the day off from work, as do most Americans that observe the day; but...

The enslavement of Native Americans and Africans were also products of this great discovery which consequently led to millions being immolated.
Celebrating such an affair mocks the deaths of those who died from the greed of English settlers and the kings and queens who sponsored them. Must
we turn a blind eye to the harsh reality that our ancestors were wrong? Even though much was conquered from this monstrosity, it makes it no more
right now than then, and is no cause for celebration.
Finally, the most apparent and vital reason as to why Columbus Day should not be an American national holiday is very simple. His voyage did not
bring him to the lands of America. Columbus landed in the Caribbean. This is a fact and is acknowledged by historians and analysis from around the
world. Columbus did not land in America; therefore, Americans have no allegiance to commemorate him for our founding. Whether his expedition
led to the colonization of America is to be argued, but there is no doubt that he, himself, did not set foot on American soil. I've read many books and
articles trying to find where he even visited America in his time. I have yet to discover any documented evidence that supports him being placed in any
of the American states. Arbitrarily, I do not recognize him for discovering America; neither do I celebrate the date

"In fourteen–hundred ninety–two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." As alluded to in this popular classroom rhyme, Christopher Columbus was an
Italian explorer whose motivation was to find a western sea route to Asia from Europe, as the terrain between the continents was treacherous, in
addition to his selfish desire for fortune and fame. The rhyme above simplifies Christopher Columbus' first voyage to the Americas in 1492, in which
he stumbled across America, in which Columbus expressed the illusion of surfacing in India, and discovered it. In honor of this achievement, on the
second Monday in October of every year, the United States of America celebrates Columbus Day, in which Columbus is regarded as heroic. The U.S.

should denounce Columbus Day from the recognition of a federal holiday because of the credible accounts of rape committed by Christopher
Columbus. For example, Michele de Cuneo, one of Columbus' comrades, composed a letter consisting of his affair with a Native American woman
whom he received from Columbus: "'While I was in the boat I captured a very beautiful Carib woman, whom the said Lord Admiral gave to me, and
with whom, having taken her into my cabin, she being naked according to their custom, I conceived desire to take pleasure'" (Schilling). When he
reveals that Columbus, his admiral, had given him the woman, as if she was his property to give away, it implies that Columbus tolerated rape, as it
was if he was encouraging it by "giving away" Native American women to men, an immoral deed. Additionally, in a letter composed in 1500,
Columbus boasted his sex–slave–trade: "'. . . A hundred castellanoes (a Spanish coin) are as easily obtained for a woman as for a farm, and it is very
general and there are plenty of dealers who go about looking for girls; those from nine to ten (years old) are now in demand'" (The Daily Take
Team). Stating that there was an abundance of people willing to trade for girls and his comment that young girls were in demand portrays his
indifference toward rape as an issue, as if it was moral and common, and reveals his greedy nature, as he was willing to offer living people for

People have many different opinions. There are so many examples however today's argumentative essay is about Christopher Columbus, for many
people Columbus is a hero for other people he is not. For examples I believe that Columbus is not a hero he is just a regular person therefore I think
that the national American day should not be called Columbus day. We don't celebrate Columbus Day in this house, and we never will. It's not that
we don't enjoy holidays when they come around. We love holidays around here as much as anyone, but there are some holidays that, in my opinion,
should not be celebrated. Columbus Day is one of those holidays I believe should not be celebrated for many reasons. One Nobody celebrated the

The Overdue Abolishment Of Columbus Day
na Manley November 8th, 2015 Writing 121 The overdue abolishment of Columbus Day Christopher Columbus may have first left his mark on the
Americas in the 15th century, but the United States didn't establish a federal holiday in his honor until 1937 (Dan Fitcher). Commissioned by
Spanish king Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to explore Asia, Columbus instead sailed to the new world in 1492 (Dan Fitcher). He first come ashore in
the Bahamas later making his way to Cuba and the island of Hispaniola (now home of Haiti and the Dominican Republic). Believing that he had
located China and Japan, Columbus founded the first Spanish colony in the Americas with the help of nearly 40 crew members. The following spring

This public shows of support draw frequent protests from Native Americans, who make the point that Columbus discovered nothing, native
populations were living in the Americas long before European explorers made their first trips across the Atlantic. And once there, Columbus wasn 't
exactly kind to his new neighbors. On his very first day in the New World, Columbus took six natives as slaves. Along with pressing thousands of
more natives into forced labor, and killing anyone who disagreed with him and his methods. Even his own colonists didn 't like him, their complaints
led him to be called back by his Spanish royal sponsors in 1500 leading to imprisonment (about news). Some merging arguments to why the day should
continue Already throughout our American history there have been some efforts to get this federal–holiday status revoked, and although yet it is not,
many just simply ignore the holiday entirely. As this being as it is, some people may argue still that Columbus Day should indeed still be celebrated
because Columbus Day recognizes the achievements of a great explorer who founded the first permanent European settlement in the New World, but
was he the first? Some may also say that the arrival of Columbus in 1492 marks the beginning of recorded history in America making Columbus Day a
patriotic holiday. Or others may say that that the

The National Holiday Of Columbus Day Should Not Become A...
The national holiday of Columbus Day should never have become a recognized Federal holiday. Christopher Columbus did not actually discover
the Americas. There were millions of indigenous people already living in the location that he was exploring. It is true he was an explorer trying to
find his way to the riches of the Indies and mapping his way for Spain and Europe however, how is it a discovery when people are already living on
the land? He didn't even make it to the location he was originally trying to reach. He was also a brutal man that enslaved the people living on the land
he "discovered".
We as a people enjoy having our holidays off and it has been a recognized holiday since enacted by Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was celebrated in
some aspect or another hundreds of years before then. We are celebrating a figure that has been romanticized about for so long even though the truth
of the man is a very different story. If we dig further into the truth we will discover that it really makes no sense to why we have a day to celebrate
this man. As a nation we may want to reconsider either a different celebration of this day or removing the holiday completely.
According to the Library of Congress "the first recorded celebration of Columbus Day in the United States took place on October 12, 1792," for the
300th anniversary of his arriving to America. At the 400th anniversary it was recommended by President Harrison that the United States observe the

Celebrating Columbus day is not a suitable thought. Columbus Day honors Christopher Columbus who's known for being an explorer who discovered
the first everlasting European colonization in the New World. Columbus day is to celebrate the start of the trading culture between America and
Europe. It was first celebrated on October 12, 1792, when the New York Society of Tammany honored Columbus on the 300th anniversary of his first
journey.
Christopher Columbus is a bad influence. He was a murderer, rapist, and cruel person. According to the article Why we shouldn't celebrate Columbus

In the article why we shouldn't celebrate Columbus day, it says "He was known for enslaving natives in many of the places he occupied during his
quests, but he eventually started trading African slaves when the native populations died off. Not only did his men rape and kill the natives, they
began importing other people to oppress." Later became the slave of U.S. He wasn't being nice to the slaves like his own people.
Columbus Day is to honor people but, not a lot of people want to honor him because he was not very kind and nice. Columbus didn't care about
trade routes or getting to know different cultures. When he saw some of the natives wearing gold jewelry he made it his mission to kill or make as
many slaves he can. He's mission was also to steal as much gold as he could. According to Ban Columbus Day? There shouldn't be a Debate "After
landing October 12, 1492, by November Columbus kidnapped ten Tainos Indians." He wasn't really nice. His goal was to get as much money as he
could.
Even though Columbus didn't make a very good decision, he still helped our country because after he found this Country, Europeans started coming to
the United States and they brought art, science, music, religion principles, medicine and philosophy but, he still brought murderers with him to the

The Importance Of Columbus Day
There is no doubt that the fight over Columbus Day as brought Americans to the thought whether Columbus Day should still be celebrated or
should it be changed to Indigenous people day to celebrate the people that were hear before Columbus. There are many arguments on both sides
like America encourages diversity and by celebrating Columbus Day it is celebrating diversity. Or on the other hand he was motivated by greed for
slaves and gold. It is a tossup because why should we be celebrating a man that enslaved the indigenous people in America when he arrived but, he
was a man of his times and it seemed right to him. You see were this is going, but this will give you a look into the perspectives of the people fighting
for their side. First, Columbus benefited America, Columbus was inspirational and Columbus Day celebrates diversity and freedom which is
encouraged in the United States. In the text "The Debate over Columbus" it states that "The founders of the united states often cited Columbus as an
inspiration for their experiment of a nation dedicated to the idea of freedom. "This says that he was a inspiration to the founding father to make
America a free country. Also, in the text "The Debate over Columbus" it states that "But according to Charles C. Mann a journalist and author of the
books 1491 and 1493, Columbus's contact with the Americas so revolutionized the ecologies, economies, and political systems of Europe, Asia, and
Africa that Columbus Day deserves to be observed even if it isn't celebrated." So, Columbus did all this great stuff that has revolutionized many
parts of America which Columbus Day deserves to have credit for. In America we celebrate diversity which Columbus Day is celebrating the Italian
Americans. In the text" The Debate over Columbus" it states that "Historian William Connell of Seton Hall University in New Jersy views Columbus
Day as a tribute to an important American trait: Diversity." So, there are many reasons why Columbus Day it a important holiday that should be
continued to be celebrated. Next, as most of us know, Columbus had lots of slaves and he captured people to become slaves. This does sound
politically incorrect right now but, in the times of Columbus it was

On October 12 this year, America will be celebrating Columbus Day. But why do we celebrate Columbus Day each year? This holiday is the
anniversary of Columbus' arrival in the Americas in 1492 but should we really be celebrating? Columbus' voyage was originally to find a shorter
trade route to India when he accidentally landed in the Bahamas and frankly, Columbus did not even know he had discovered the New World. He
truly believed that he made it all the way to India. Because of this, he even named the natives of this land "Indians". Plus, during Columbus' three
voyages to the New World, he enslaved the Native Americans. He enslaved people on their own land when he was the one who did not actually

In every school in the United States, teachers would teach students about Columbus and his journey to the Americas and how his discovery would
eventually lead to the beginning of the colonization of the Americas. Every student knows who Columbus is: an explorer from Spain who set sailed to

achievements have created a "mindset" in which many people will follow during colonization: to conquer and enslave the people and the land for golds

According to Michael Paiewonsky, he talks about Columbus's vision, saying that the "natives had a good build and can make a fine slave."
(Biography: Christopher Columbus. 26:32 – 26:39). Also, Michael even mentions that Columbus captures and steals natives that he trades with and
keeps them as slaves. (Biography: Christopher Columbus.26:40–26:43) Columbus's act towards the natives was rather rash and horrible. Taking natives
and use them as personal slaves for is personal use shows that Columbus really cared about is the spoils and glory. He cared about being famous and
the wealth he will gain once he finishes with his first voyage. With the Spanish Empire colonizing parts, the New World, many Spaniards mistreated
the natives and eventually enslave them. After Columbus discover that his colony of Hispaniola was turned to a killing zone, the both Columbus and
the Spaniards begin to treat the natives as slaves and made them find the gold. According to Nancy Levinson, she talks about the natives have a daily
quota and many never nor get near the data quota when they mine for gold. (Biography: Christopher Columbus. 25:50 –26:02) Because the Spaniard
wanted gold, the natives didn't reach the number of gold needed. This eventually cause the natives to work twice and hard to meet the standard quota
and many were punished. Many natives begin to feel like their freedom has been lost and that the world they live in was terrible, due to the harsh

The Importance Of Columbus Day
Several schools within the state of Michigan celebrate Columbus Day, a holiday honoring the man that "discovered" the New World. However, Byron
Center Public Schools does not. The question that has been asked is whether we should start to celebrate the holiday, or continue not to. The answer is
that Byron Center should continue to not celebrate the holiday. Columbus day should not be celebrated because of the negative effect his reign had on
the Natives, he was not the first person to discover the New World, and the damaging effect he had on biodiversity.
The main reason Columbus Day should not be celebrated is because of the negative effect Columbus had on the Native people. Many sources of
evidence have found that Columbus mistreated the Native Americans. For instance, the Spanish wanted to convert the natives to the Catholic church;
however, the natives did not convert, so the Spanish resorted to violence to get what they wanted. After the natives were conquered, the survivors were
enslaved in the Encomiendas system. Encomiendas was like slavery; the natives had to work without pay, and were not allowed to leave the land
without permission. Columbus and his men also raped, murdered, and committed genocide against the people. Additionally, Columbus would force
them to give him more gold than they even had, and ravaged their land when they did not give it to him. He abused the natives in many ways, which is
why Columbus Day should not be celebrated.

Christopher Columbus is famously known for being an Italian explorer. Christopher Columbus set sail across the vast seas with three ships, Santa
Maria, the Pinta, and the Nina to find a western sea route to India, China and the mystical gold and spice islands of Asia. He was born in Genoa, Italy
and died May 20, 1506 in Valladolid, Spain. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella fundedChristopher Columbus's voyage and he set sail upon the vast
seas. He later found that he would find a new land that would later become America. He began to make settlements in the Americas and then later came
back just to see that some settlements were destroyed. The indigenous indians were the people who destroyed some of them. He began to capture and
make them slaves and killed them.
When Christopher Columbus made the indians slaves he did terrible things to them and treated them badly. Most people say Vikings first discovered
America. Yes they were the first but that didn't have the right materials to document their journey and voyages to the America's. There are many
states in the United States that don't celebrate Columbus Day as a holiday because of how badly he treated the Indians. Christopher Columbus's first
voyage was August 3, 1492 and he had set sail from Spain to find an all water route to Asia. Almost more than two months later he landed on an

To change Columbus Day to no longer be a holiday would be turning a blind eye to a difficult history, yet still turning that eye away from a history
with a side to be celebrated. I instead ask of you to celebrate Columbus Day, learn the full history, including the wrong doings of Columbus and his
crew, and celebrate the good change brought about by this event that ultimately led to the lifestyle you lead today. If the wrongs of every event in
history were to be scrutinized would we have a history left to celebrate? Think of the reasons why we celebrate a moment in history, and then think
why we have not excluded that from our celebrations. I believe it is to celebrate the good times and the bad and to never forget why we are here in this

Even when we look at something in a holiday that isn't negative, like the Christmas tree, which there aren't conifers in Jerusalem, it shows how much
our holidays can be skewed from a tradition which was originally practiced. Even the other holidays honoring great men can have a darker side.
MLK day for example; Martin Luther King, or Michael Luther King, was under scrutiny because his doctorate had blatant plagiarism, also his "I Have
a Dream" speech was plagiarized from a pastor from his church he attended. This shows that history and the light we view people in can be skewed to
retain the honor or the pomp and circumstance that comes with remembering the good brought about by their achievements.
Beyond the fact that Columbus was not the first person to discover the Americas, he was the man that brought about European civilization to America
and their fascination with conquering a new world. His wrong doings, which include, letting his crew rape, pillage and plunder the Bahamas, should not
outweigh the good that coming to America brought for us as Americans who, without European influence may not have progressed quite as far or in
the circumstances we did. As with the Colombian exchange that was brought about by Columbus' venture to the Americas it is a box of good and evil.

Why Columbus Day Should Not Be Celebrateding Christopher...
The reason the United States Of America celebrates holidays is because the people or events that have in some way affected the whole country in a
good way. For example the reason why the United States celebrates Presidents' Day is because it is George Washington's birthday and he benefited
the country in the best way possible however, there is a holiday where several Americans feel that it should not be celebrated which is Columbus Day.
Columbus Day should not be celebrated because Christopher Columbus is not worthy of being commemorated.
Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa,Italy in 1451. He had three brothers and one sister along with a dad named Dominico and mom named
Susanna. He left his father's wool weaving business to join the Genoese Fleet to sail the Mediterranean Sea. During one of adventures his ship crashed
in Portugal but decided to stay there with his little brother and then began working with a mapmaker. In the 15th century Portugal desperately needed to
find a faster route to Asia so they can have better trading. Columbus then decided he should be the one to find that new route, but with all the rumors on
which direction is fastest he thought he found Asia but it was actually America.
In August of 1942 Columbus and his men sailed the ships of The Nina, The Pinta, and The Santa Maria. The first of four trips traveled from Spain all
across the Atlantic Ocean. On October 12th he spotted and landed an island in the name of San Salvador but the natives called

In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. That is the rhyme that many of us probably memorized when first learning about Christopher Columbus as
children. Of course, as kids, we wouldn't have understood all of the events that occurred because of Christopher Columbus, only being able to maintain
the idea that he "discovered America," later to grow up and be hit with the realization of the fact that more happened than we were initially taught.
Christopher Columbus, as we later learned, did not discover America. The America's Native people were the Native Americans, hence their name. As
we grew a little older and started to reach our teen years, we would learn about how Christopher Columbus took the natives as slaves, creating a
system in which gold would be collected for Columbus and Spain's profit, and several brutalities would be committed if orders were not obeyed or ...

they become a good man or woman, however completely disregarding the history the figure made, dark or not. This, is what Columbus day does, as

The Importance Of Christopher Columbus Day
Christopher Columbus is the reason many Native Americans lost their land, and even their lives, so why is Columbus Day a national holiday in the
United States. This has been a common argument for people who disagree with the celebration of Christopher Columbus. Many people believe the
United States should celebrate Indigenous People's Day opposed to Columbus day. Their idea that Native Americans should be celebrated is a logical
argument. Native Americans were in fact the first known residents of the United States. However, Christopher Columbus' bravery and resiliency should
not be forgotten. Columbus made an incredible discovery and opened many doors of opportunity for his people and many others. For this reason,
Columbus Day should continue to be a holiday that is celebrated by the citizens of the United States. Columbus Day has been celebrated in the United
States for almost 150 years. It began in San Francisco in 1869 by a group of Italian Americans (Mai–Duc). Christopher Columbus was an Italian
explorer, so it was not surprising that Italian Americans devoted a day to his memory. Columbus' discovery allowed Italians to conquer and inhabit a
new, luxurious territory. It was intriguing, but not shocking that the rest of the United States adopted Columbus Day as a national holiday. It was in
1937 when the United States declared Columbus Day as a national holiday (Segarra). This holiday is a remembrance of Christopher Columbus, his

Columbus Day : The Indigenous Peoples Day
Columbus Day is a holiday widely celebrated throughout the Americas. It is a holiday commemorating the voyage, Christopher Columbus made for
when he landed in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492. "Christopher Columbus was an Italian–born explorer who set sail in August 1492, bound for Asia
with backing from the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella." His voyage was so successful that when he returned to Spain, he came
with goods that the Europeans had never seen. The discovery of new merchandise brought about the Age of Exploration and in 1937, October 12th was
officially named Columbus Day and nationally celebrated in the United States by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Although Columbus Day is used as
the celebration between two sides of the world merging and creating an entire empire, it is also widely looked down upon for the way the merge was
completed. "Upon arriving in the Bahamas, the explorer and his men forced the native peoples they found there into slavery." This not only started the
transatlantic slave trade, but also started a genocide that lead to the death of millions. Europeans also brought with them new diseases that they had

Columbus Day : A Positive Change To The Columbus Day?
Although Columbus may have supposedly discovered America, Columbus day should not be a holiday due to the lack of achievement in the present
day United States and cruelty that he showed to the Native Americans when he arrived in the Bahamas. Some people have suggested that Columbus
Day should be celebrated due to the fact that Columbus brought change and a source of development to the new world. While Columbus may have
brought some change to the America's like the introduction of livestock like sheep and cattle, he really brought so many more devastating diseases like
influenza, smallpox, and typhus. What positive change did the Native Americans really get to experience? How can natives experience this so called
positive change that these foreigners are bringing over when they are wiping out the fellow Native Americans brothers, sisters, father, mother and
leaders with diseases that the natives have no immunity to. Wiping a whole species out is definitely a change that Columbus brought to these innocent
Native Americans but this deadly diseases were on the complete other end of the positive change spectrum. A man who brings negative change to the
Americas is not something that needs to be celebrated by hundreds of millions of people in the United States every year. Slavery –– a black stain in the

the person supported in owning or controlling of a person. During that time of landing in the New World, he went on a killing spree of humans and of in
slaving the Native Americans.
Columbus Day shouldn 't be a holiday anymore because all the Indians he enslaved and killed during his voyage. Columbus had made a promise to
bring back slaves, gold, copper, and girls to be used for sex. According to A Patriot 's History ... about 56 million people were killed... Show more

We helped influence the Natives to move to a hunting based lifestyle instead of nomadic. In addition to this the cultures from different continents have
been changed because of Columbus. We can 't forget though that he brought theses diseases throughout the continents he traveled to.Christopher
Columbus Biography explains "The exchange also brought new diseases to both hemispheres, though the effects were greatest in the Americans.
Smallpox from the Old World decimated millions of the Native American population" The diseases were new to both the Europeans and the
Americans because it was the first time they had experienced this type of diseases. It was very new to both of them at the time, so they didn 't know
how to handle it or let alone cure it so they suffered. The Americans suffered the most from these diseases. In effect of the Americans suffering from
these diseases, the Europeans ended up out numbering them in a very big margin. In addition, the exchange benefited the Europeans more the
Americans and the rest of the world a part of the exchange. American was changed and pretty much gone plus the Native Americans disappeared too.
All this happened because he made promises he couldn 't keep like bringing home a certain amount gold so instead, he brought to trade with slaves
who carried the disease to the Americans and Europeans.
Not only did he give it to the Americans and the Europeans he gave it to the Spanish and the Aztec 's. Science Mag says

The Celebration Of Columbus Day
"In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue", these words are taught all around the states and are meant to help teach and remember the year that the now
notorious Christopher Columbus went on his renowned exploration. Columbus was an Italian that was sent by the Queen and King of Spain to find
riches in other lands, and during this voyage he stumbled onto the Americas. During his time in the Americas he enslaved the Native Americans, forced
Christianity onto them and brought over diseases that would result in the eventual deaths of Native American. For a long period of time though,
Columbus was known as the "man who discovered America", nothing more. Now he is thought of as a murderer and a thief for stealing the land and
lives of many Native Americans.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To the colonists, he was a man who dared to discover something new and bring "civilization" to a new continent. He was an embodiment of the ideas
the revolutionary colonists were trying to put into action. Columbus was such an idol that King's College changed its name to Columbia College in
1784 and South Carolina made its capital the city of Columbia. Columbus was the center of many poets work, including Philip Freneau's The Pictures
of Columbus and even featuring in Phillis Wheatley's To His Excellency George Washington. Tammany Hall held its first celebration in honor of
Columbus in 1792, the same year there was a movement to officially name the country Columbia. During this celebration they put up a statue honoring

important day to to be celebrated.
3. His linking with the "New World" transformed the globe and was a world changing moment.
Reasons to not celebrate Columbus Day:
1. When Columbus arrived at America, he forced the native people of the Americas of their land.
2. It is a reminder of "'historic crimes' against Native Americans," and "history is messy."
3. Columbus treated the Native People nice just so they can slowly trust them and turn into Christians. Also, the people who survived the European
Disease will be turned into slaves.

The United States only honors two men with federal holidays bearing their names, Martin Luther King Jr., and Christopher Columbus. When we
celebrate Columbus Day, we are honoring a man who helped spark a holocaust situation of the people of America and the Atlantic slave trade.
Furthermore, Columbus never set foot on the land we call the United States, nor was the first explorer to reach the "new world". Columbus's arrival in
the new world was proceeded by the explorer Leif Ericson and others. The true discoverers of the land Columbus encountered are the ancestors of the
native people who were living there when he arrived. Unfortunately, the public education system of the United States has failed to teach the entire truth

In making this comment, UNESCO is also agreeing that the Atlantic slave trade was so cruel that they were killing the Natives with their cruelty even
before they became slaves. In conclusion, the Atlantic slave trade was so intense that the Natives, Africans and people from the Caribbean islands were
affected.
Next, the Europeans soon "developed a strong demand for gold in their economy" (UNESCO). Which made them more destructive and violent
towards the Natives. First off, some spaniards use their matureness as an advantage for the Natives to give them whatever they want. In this case,
gold or religion. "Some spaniards have no more consideration for them than beasts" ((Bartolome de Las Casas).Bartolome de Las Casas is saying
that the spaniards are getting really greedy for getting something they crave. Furthermore, they're getting more violent once they realize what the
Indians have. According to Bartolome de Las Casas, "their reason for killing and destroying such an infinite number of souls is that the Christians
have an ultimate aim, which is to acquire gold, and to swell themselves with riches..." (Bartolome de Las Casas). The Europeans don't deserve any
special celebration since they already got their respect from any Indians since they willingly suffered and gave up gold. To sum up, the Europeans are

Columbus Day Pros And Cons
In modern day society, we often overlook key points in history. For example, Columbus Day, why do we celebrate it? Well, from one's point of view,
we celebrate this holiday for several reasons, one of these reasons are because it recalls Christopher Columbus' entry to the Americas on October 12,
1492. This occasion is questionable on the grounds that the European settlement in the Americas prompted the downfall of the history and culture, of
the indigenous people groups. What are some of the pros and cons from naming Columbus Day to Indigenous Day? That is what you will learn in
this essay. To start off, Indigenous People's Day, or Columbus Day, Which do you prefer? First off, why is it called "Columbus Day"? Well, as stated
earlier, it was named after Christopher Columbus, who as we believe today, "discovered" America. Many believe that it was him who founded the
Americas, but really there could've been earlier settlers or even Native Americans who lived on those territories before Columbus made his way there.
What is a pro of having this day named after Columbus? A source I found called "www.scholastic.com" stated, " The holiday honoring Christopher
Columbus's sighting of America on October 12, 1492, is observed in the states of the United States and also in parts of Canada, in Puerto Rico, and in
some cities in Italy and Spain. Although Columbus was not the first explorer to set foot in the Western Hemisphere, his landing at San Salvador
Island in what is now the Bahamas was very important. It opened the way for the settlement of America by Europeans." So, basically we named this
holiday after Columbus because it was assumed that he was one of the first to see and discover the Americas. Another source titled "www.osia.org"
stated "Columbus Day celebrates the beginning of cultural exchange between America and Europe. After Columbus, came millions of European
immigrants who brought their art, music, science, medicine, philosophy and religious principles to America." From one's point of view, it may look
like Columbus did many great things that led to the development of America. But no one really knows what was at stake because of Columbus'
decisions. A con relating to the naming of Columbus Day is in a

Christopher Columbus sailed for Spain in 1492 and claimed all islands around San Salvador looking for gold. Spain eventually sent Columbus back to
create an Empire. America should not celebrate Columbus Day because of Columbus' cruel punishments towards others, the way he influenced today's
world, and the way he did not prove anything new. Christopher Columbus caused cruel punishment by cutting peoples hands off, making dogs attack
the Native Americans, and by silencing the Native Americans. Columbus Day should not be celebrated because he influenced today's world negatively
through slavery, stereotyping, and genocide. Finally, Columbus did not prove anything new because people already lived in the new world, he was not

For instance, he left behind a legacy of slavery. Christopher Columbus used forced labor to make people to do his tasks (source 4). This led him
to start to human trafficking. Columbus would personally embolden "his men to rape Native women as young as nine or ten" (source 4). As a
result, Columbus' legacy left international slave trade as a growing problem in today's world. America should not celebrate Columbus Day when he
treated women and men so dishonorably against their wishes. Another influence is that Columbus left behind stereotyping. Columbus called Native
American Indians. Columbus would grouped minorities and call them whatever he wanted, just like he did to the Native Americans. Now People
refer to Native American as Indians. This creating a stereotype of Natives. We should not celebrate Columbus Day when he caused arrogance and
is to blame for the bereave of Native Americans respect. Finally, the last way he negatively influenced today's world is genocide. Columbus and the
people who followed him killed so many people. Columbus motives during his voyages was to convert people to the Catholic faith. No wanted to be
converted, so Columbus and his men hung the people up in rows of 13. This killing two generations (source 1). America should not celebrate
Columbus day when he caused more pain than good. Not only should Columbus Day be taboo since because of the way he

Should We Celebrate Columbus Day? Ever since we were children we were taught the story of Christopher Columbus, of how he valiantly ventured
into the unknown, discovered new lands, enhanced trade, and inspired many other explorers. He seemed a hero back then, a man of great
accomplishments. Our country wouldn't be here without him, after all. However, we are rarely taught about the other side of the story, about the abuse
of the native people of the lands Columbus "discovered" and about the greed and violence tied in with his voyages. Christopher Columbus was not a
man that should be celebrated, despite his success in inspiring an age of exploration and expansion.

Columbus Day Significance
As Columbus Day approaches, it is important to remember the significance of the holiday to different ethnic groups in United States. I can never
remember where Columbus is from. Now I know it is not only an error of my memory, but also Columbus' own "pan–European mercenary'' identity. I
knew that Columbus' legacy is a controversial one, but until I listened to the podcast, I did not know how much he meant to the Italian and Irish
communities. I never thought Columbus being a Catholic would be of use to anything besides appeasing Queen Isabella, –––––– It's interesting how
the immigrants of the United States embraced the legacy of Columbus and thought of him as a "founding father of sorts."
In his journals, he mentions finding a land we now know as the eastern edge of the Bahamas. He not only writes about how peaceful the land is and
the apparent use of tobacco, but makes a disturbing reference to upcoming slave trade. It was chilling to think about how big the Atlantic Slave Trade
would become after Columbus writes this. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Why Columbus Day Should Not Aboling The Columbus Day?
Today communities that are against celebrating Columbus Day have protested because they want to celebrate Indigenous People's Day instead. The
Indigenous people continue to be affected by their time of slavery with Christopher Columbus or to those that have ancestors. Now communities can
get a better understanding of whom Christopher Columbus really is. Columbus Day should be abolished all together because Christopher Columbus did
not discover America, he is not the hero everyone thinks he is, and because he tried to get rid of the Indigenous People.
Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer. He was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa that is now Italy. Later in life, he settled down in
Spain. Columbus first went to the sea as a teenager, and took part in several trading voyages. He then was trying to sail west across the Atlantic to
reach Asia on his first voyage as an adult. Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that we celebrated first in 1937. The arrival of Columbus in the new world

who declared Columbus Day a national holiday because of the Knights of Columbus, leading the Catholic organizations, persistence.

Columbus Day And The Columbus Day
Christopher Columbus is an Italian navigator who sailed west from Spain in 1492. He was in search for the Indies(India, China and Japan) through the
waters due to hostile armies and long distances on land. Columbus thought he landed in the Indies when he actually landed in the Bahamas, welcomed
in by the Taino(Native Americans). However, Columbus did not go there to spread Christianity, he forced the Taino into slavery, looting them, spreading
deadly diseases that killed many Natives, and taking their land (causing other people to come to the Americas). However, Columbus day is celebrated
by Americans thanking Columbus for finding America, but should we celebrate a man for terrorizing Native Americans? In addition, to all of this
chaos, there is a huge debate going on if Confederate monuments should be allowed to stand or be taken down. These monuments come from the
American Civil War, the North(Union) versus the South(Confederates). The South relied heavily on agriculture, using slaves to harvest their cotton.
Some historians say that the South wanted to keep slavery, while others say that the South fought mostly for the right to decide their own affairs. Even
though the North won, the South made monuments to make Confederate soldiers be portrayed as selfless heroes(no monuments have anything about
pro– slavery). Columbus day should be celebrated and the Confederate monuments should stay because people cannot forget their history, people
respect these things for different reasons, and people do not know the real reason to why Columbus day and Confederate monuments are really
celebrated for. The Civil War and Columbus finding the Americas will always be in our history and can never be changed even if we try. Professor
Leo Killsback of Arizona State University talked of how "Columbus Day is not a time of celebration but a reminder of "historic crimes" against
Native Americans"; while Laura Anastasia; the author of the article " Monumental Battle", she gives an insight in how "We haven't really dealt with
the legacy of the Civil War and slavery". How us, Americans supposed to learn from our mistakes and grow as a country if we take away the
foundations that built the country where we live today? Columbus

The Importance Of Columbus Day On America
In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. This mnemonic is known by most American adults and taught to children in some schools. However, this
rhyme holds a belief in it that is not true. When children are taught that Columbus set sail in 1492, they are also taught that when he did so he
discovered America. This is truly and utterly false. If Columbus Day is no longer named as such, the Native Americans will be celebrated and a
minority group will be represented rather than a murder. By seeing that Columbus did not discover America, Columbus was a murder, and the holiday
Celebrated based on a common misconception, Columbus Day can become a more enjoyable holiday for everyone. Many children and adults believe
still believe that Columbus discovered America. Contrary to common belief, Columbus did not discover America and he never set out to prove the
world was round. In Columbus's time, the fact that the earth was round was common knowledge. However, Columbus believed that the diameter of the
earth was extremely small even though scientist had already proven otherwise (Blakemore). In 1942, Columbus sailed the ocean blue to prove that he
could cross the Atlantic by boat in only four days (Blakemore). Of course, the King and Queen repeatedly rejected Columbus's requests for resources to
sail until they were desperate enough and needed more resources. Ultimately, Columbus's famous discovery only happened because the Queen was
desperate. Nevertheless, the Queen and King's

Lately, there have been some questions to whether or not Columbus Day should be celebrated. This question is highly debateable, but the
accomplishments of Columbus overcome any doubt to whether he should be celebrated. Columbus is one of the most recognized explorers ever, he
was ambitious, intelligent, and dedicated. Columbus should have a day commemorating him, and that is self evident.
While trying to get his journey funded, Columbus faced a problem. People thought that by going west, he would fall off of the world. After begging his
own country and receiving nothing in return, he went to Spain. In Spain, Columbus pleaded the monarchs to fund his journey. After a matter of time,
they agreed to help him. Columbus established the virtues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As time has passed, people's morality have changed. Someone who blames Columbus for the slavery or murder of natives is uninformed on the
standards of the time. At the time, these were acceptable and honorable. According to historian Virginia McConnell Simmons, slave trading was a
common practice among the Ute Native American tribes which fueled the economy. Evidently, Columbus didn't bring slavery into theAmericas, nor did
he commit anything out of the norm. Arguing that Columbus was a bad man because he sold some of the natives into slavery has no effect as to
whether he should be celebrated. These charges do not afflict Columbus at all, or stand in the way of his achievements. Many opposers of Columbus
blame him for abrading the natives rights. To say this is to completely disregard how the US government treated the natives so many times at the
beginning of our settlement. For example, removing the Cherokees from georgia, where they had always lived was a big deal. The georgian
government was selfish and wanted the territory for its natural resources, so they forced the natives westward. Americans don't hate the georgians for
what happened in 1838, they understand that it was acceptable at the time, and the georgians were trying to gain wealth. If we forgive the Georgian
government and President Jackson for this ordeal, then why can't we forgive Columbus for the same reasons? Clearly, Columbus did nothing wrong for
his time period, and shouldn't be accused with modern day

Columbus day is one of the oldest and most traditional holiday for American history. However, many people do not know what they are celebrating.
America should not continue to celebrate Columbus Day because of the Cruelty columbus brought to the natives, his legacy, and achievements.
Columbus brought with him terrible actions of the raping of native woman, hunting of people with dogs, and roasting people on fires. Moreover,
Columbus also created the opportunity to the spread of smallpox, slavery, and destruction of native population. Additionally, some of his achievements
that we celebrate such as: the discovery of the new world, idea of the earth shape, and creation of contact of europe with the new world might not even

The New Light
The federal holiday, Columbus Day, has brought about its own uniqueness amongst many Americans. Generations of schoolchildren were instructed to
read or watch videos that claimed Columbus was the founder of America. He was known as an explorer, navigator, and a colonizer. Now,Christopher
Columbus is no longer portrayed as the hero he once was. Over many years, there has been a series of stories told by others, and a proof of
documentation found to reveal information about his life, famous voyages, and the multicultural movement.
The birthday of Christopher Columbus remains unknown to this day. He was presumed born between August 26 and October 31, 1451, in Genoa,
Italy (Flint). In his thirties, when his ship was wrecked, he managed to grab a wooden oar and reach the shore in Portugal (Cavendish). He returned to
Spain in 1504 after his last voyage (Cavendish). Columbus had been arrested years prior to accusations of tyranny and brutality toward native peoples
of the Americas. But he was released by King Ferdinand after six weeks in prison. He was subsequently denied most of the profits of his discoveries
promised to him by Ferdinand and Queen Isabella (Wanjek). Columbus was fifty–three and in deprived well–being. He was living comfortably,
economically speaking, in an apartment in Valladolid, Crown of Castile, in present–day Spain, albeit in pain from severe arthritis (Wanjek). He is now

Christopher Columbus : The Bad Impacts Of The Columbus Day...
Every October, people celebrate Columbus Day for the things that he did. For example, the Columbian Exchange. But also, the people are
celebrating to a person that did many bad things. Christopher Columbus should be remembered negatively because he did many awful things to
the Native Americas. Like rape, kill. torture, and other awful things. On the Haiti land, they found many sailors left behind at the Fort Navidad
had been killed in a battle with the Indians. After that had roamed the land in gangs looking for golds, taking women and children as slaves for sex
and labor. They had found no gold fields in Haiti, but had to fill up the ships. It was a great slave raid, rounded up to fifteen hundred Arawak men,
women, and children. They put them in pens guarded by Spaniards and dogs. After that, then they pick the best five hundred specimens to load
onto the ships. Those five hundred, 2 hundred died in the route, the other rest arrived alive in Spain and were put up for sale by the archdeacon of
the town. Columbus ordered all people of age of 14 years old or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every 3 months. When they brought it, they
were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians that had no copper tokens had their hand cut off and bled to death. Indians had given an
impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. They fled them were they hunted down with the dogs and were kill.

By the time Europeans arrived in America, there were already at least forty to fifty million indigenous people inhabiting the land (Faber 4–5). Other explorers, from Norway, Greenland, and Iceland reached America centuries before Columbus (Faber ix). Although these people attempted to live in this new land, they didn't stay long, and failed to create a lasting historical impact (Faber 20–26). Columbus never even walked on what we now call the United States of America. Where ever he did land, he was motivated only by his own greed. Columbus came for the gold, spices, and slaves. In his diary, he mentioned gold 75 times just in the first two weeks, alone (Katz 13). Indians who weren't able to find gold, were punished by having their hands cut off. Most slaves died en route to Spain. Many Indian females were taken as sex slaves, some as young as nine and ten years old. Columbus forced cooperation from the Indians by disfiguring them and using them as examples. Even worse, he used hunting dogs to tear the Indians apart. Many natives committed suicide, and murdered their own children to save them from such a horrible life. Those who survived the voyage were worked to death. We teach our children to be honest and truthful, but then lie to them for the first six to eight years of their educational lives about their own history. For in fact, Columbus did not discover America and did not unveil the myth regarding the world being flat. The enslavement of Native Americans and Africans were also products of this great discovery which consequently led to millions being immolated. Celebrating such an affair mocks the deaths of those who died from the greed of English settlers and the kings and queens who sponsored them. Must we turn a blind eye to the harsh reality that our ancestors were wrong? Even though much was conquered from this monstrosity, it makes it no more right now than then, and is no cause for celebration. Finally, the most apparent and vital reason as to why Columbus Day should not be an American national holiday is very simple. His voyage did not bring him to the lands of America. Columbus landed in the Caribbean. This is a fact and is acknowledged by historians and analysis from around the world. Columbus did not land in America; therefore, Americans have no allegiance to commemorate him for our founding. Whether his expedition led to the colonization of America is to be argued, but there is no doubt that he, himself, did not set foot on American soil. I've read many books and articles trying to find where he even visited America in his time. As alluded to in this popular classroom rhyme, Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer whose motivation was to find a western sea route to Asia from Europe, as the terrain between the continents was treacherous, in addition to his selfish desire for fortune and fame. The rhyme above simplifies Christopher Columbus' first voyage to the Americas in 1492, in which he stumbled across America, in which Columbus expressed the illusion of surfacing in India, and discovered it. In honor of this achievement, on the second Monday in October of every year, the United States of America celebrates Columbus Day, in which Columbus is regarded as heroic. For example, Michele de Cuneo, one of Columbus' comrades, composed a letter consisting of his affair with a Native American woman whom he received from Columbus: "'While I was in the boat I captured a very beautiful Carib woman, whom the said Lord Admiral gave to me, and with whom, having taken her into my cabin, she being naked according to their custom, I conceived desire to take pleasure'" (Schilling). When he reveals that Columbus, his admiral, had given him the woman, as if she was his property to give away, it implies that Columbus tolerated rape, as it was if he was encouraging it by "giving away" Native American women to men, an immoral deed. Additionally, in a letter composed in 1500, Columbus boasted his sex–slave–trade: "'. . . A hundred castellanoes (a Spanish coin) are as easily obtained for a woman as for a farm, and it is very general and there are plenty of dealers who go about looking for girls; those from nine to ten (years old) are now in demand'" (The Daily Take Team). Christopher Columbus did not actually discover the Americas. There were millions of indigenous people already living in the location that he was exploring. It is true he was an explorer trying to find his way to the riches of the Indies and mapping his way for Spain and Europe however, how is it a discovery when people are already living on the land? He didn't even make it to the location he was originally trying to reach. He was also a brutal man that enslaved the people living on the land he "discovered". There are many arguments on both sides like America encourages diversity and by celebrating Columbus Day it is celebrating diversity. Or on the other hand he was motivated by greed for slaves and gold. It is a tossup because why should we be celebrating a man that enslaved the indigenous people in America when he arrived but, he was a man of his times and it seemed right to him. You see were this is going, but this will give you a look into the perspectives of the people fighting for their side. First, Columbus benefited America, Columbus was inspirational and Columbus Day celebrates diversity and freedom which is encouraged in the United States. In the text "The Debate over Columbus" it states that "The founders of the united states often cited Columbus as an inspiration for their experiment of a nation dedicated to the idea of freedom. "This says that he was a inspiration to the founding father to make America a free country. Also, in the text "The Debate over Columbus" it states that "But according to Charles C. Mann a journalist and author of the books 1491 and 1493, Columbus's contact with the Americas so revolutionized the ecologies, economies, and political systems of Europe, Asia, and Africa that Columbus Day deserves to be observed even if it isn't celebrated." So, Columbus did all this great stuff that has revolutionized many parts of America which Columbus Day deserves to have credit for. In America we celebrate diversity which Columbus Day is celebrating the Italian Americans. The answer is that Byron Center should continue to not celebrate the holiday. Columbus day should not be celebrated because of the negative effect his reign had on the Natives, he was not the first person to discover the New World, and the damaging effect he had on biodiversity. The main reason Columbus Day should not be celebrated is because of the negative effect Columbus had on the Native people. Many sources of evidence have found that Columbus mistreated the Native Americans. For instance, the Spanish wanted to convert the natives to the Catholic church; however, the natives did not convert, so the Spanish resorted to violence to get what they wanted. After the natives were conquered, the survivors were enslaved in the Encomiendas system. Encomiendas was like slavery; the natives had to work without pay, and were not allowed to leave the land without permission. During his time in the Americas he enslaved the Native Americans, forced Christianity onto them and brought over diseases that would result in the eventual deaths of Native American. When we celebrate Columbus Day, we are honoring a man who helped spark a holocaust situation of the people of America and the Atlantic slave trade. Furthermore, Columbus never set foot on the land we call the United States, nor was the first explorer to reach the "new world". Columbus's arrival in the new world was proceeded by the explorer Leif Ericson and others. The true discoverers of the land Columbus encountered are the ancestors of the native people who were living there when he arrived. In making this comment, UNESCO is also agreeing that the Atlantic slave trade was so cruel that they were killing the Natives with their cruelty even before they became slaves. In conclusion, the Atlantic slave trade was so intense that the Natives, Africans and people from the Caribbean islands were affected. Next, the Europeans soon "developed a strong demand for gold in their economy" (UNESCO). Which made them more destructive and violent towards the Natives. First off, some spaniards use their matureness as an advantage for the Natives to give them whatever they want. In this case, gold or religion. "Some spaniards have no more consideration for them than beasts" ((Bartolome de Las Casas).Bartolome de Las Casas is saying that the spaniards are getting really greedy for getting something they crave. Furthermore, they're getting more violent once they realize what the Indians have. According to Bartolome de Las Casas, "their reason for killing and destroying such an infinite number of souls is that the Christians have an ultimate aim, which is to acquire gold, and to swell themselves with riches..." (Bartolome de Las Casas). The Europeans don't deserve any special celebration since they already got their respect from any Indians since they willingly suffered and gave up gold. • 27. Columbus Day Pros And Cons In modern day society, we often overlook key points in history. For example, Columbus Day, why do we celebrate it? Well, from one's point of view, we celebrate this holiday for several reasons, one of these reasons are because it recalls Christopher Columbus' entry to the Americas on October 12, 1492. This occasion is questionable on the grounds that the European settlement in the Americas prompted the downfall of the history and culture, of the indigenous people groups. What are some of the pros and cons from naming Columbus Day to Indigenous Day? That is what you will learn in this essay. To start off, Indigenous People's Day, or Columbus Day, Which do you prefer? First off, why is it called "Columbus Day"? Well, as stated earlier, it was named after Christopher Columbus, who as we believe today, "discovered" America. Many believe that it was him who founded the Americas, but really there could've been earlier settlers or even Native Americans who lived on those territories before Columbus made his way there. What is a pro of having this day named after Columbus? A source I found called "www.scholastic.com" stated, " The holiday honoring Christopher Columbus's sighting of America on October 12, 1492, is observed in the states of the United States and also in parts of Canada, in Puerto Rico, and in some cities in Italy and Spain. Although Columbus was not the first explorer to set foot in the Western Hemisphere, his landing at San Salvador Island in what is now the Bahamas was very important. It opened the way for the settlement of America by Europeans." So, basically we named this holiday after Columbus because it was assumed that he was one of the first to see and discover the Americas. Another source titled "www.osia.org" stated "Columbus Day celebrates the beginning of cultural exchange between America and Europe. After Columbus, came millions of European immigrants who brought their art, music, science, medicine, philosophy and religious principles to America." From one's point of view, it may look like Columbus did many great things that led to the development of America. But no one really knows what was at stake because of Columbus' decisions. Spain eventually sent Columbus back to create an Empire. America should not celebrate Columbus Day because of Columbus' cruel punishments towards others, the way he influenced today's world, and the way he did not prove anything new. Christopher Columbus caused cruel punishment by cutting peoples hands off, making dogs attack the Native Americans, and by silencing the Native Americans. For instance, he left behind a legacy of slavery. Christopher Columbus used forced labor to make people to do his tasks (source 4). This led him to start to human trafficking. Columbus would personally embolden "his men to rape Native women as young as nine or ten" (source 4). As a result, Columbus' legacy left international slave trade as a growing problem in today's world. America should not celebrate Columbus Day when he treated women and men so dishonorably against their wishes. Another influence is that Columbus left behind stereotyping. Columbus called Native American Indians. Columbus would grouped minorities and call them whatever he wanted, just like he did to the Native Americans. Now People refer to Native American as Indians. This creating a stereotype of Natives. We should not celebrate Columbus Day when he caused arrogance and is to blame for the bereave of Native Americans respect. Columbus motives during his voyages was to convert people to the Catholic faith. No wanted to be converted, so Columbus and his men hung the people up in rows of 13. This killing two generations (source 1). America should not celebrate Columbus day when he caused more pain than good. Not only should Columbus Day be taboo since because of the way he ... I knew that Columbus' legacy is a controversial one, but until I listened to the podcast, I did not know how much he meant to the Italian and Irish communities. I never thought Columbus being a Catholic would be of use to anything besides appeasing Queen Isabella, –––––– It's interesting how the immigrants of the United States embraced the legacy of Columbus and thought of him as a "founding father of sorts." In his journals, he mentions finding a land we now know as the eastern edge of the Bahamas. • 31. Why Columbus Day Should Not Aboling The Columbus Day? Today communities that are against celebrating Columbus Day have protested because they want to celebrate Indigenous People's Day instead. The Indigenous people continue to be affected by their time of slavery with Christopher Columbus or to those that have ancestors. Now communities can get a better understanding of whom Christopher Columbus really is. Columbus Day should be abolished all together because Christopher Columbus did not discover America, he is not the hero everyone thinks he is, and because he tried to get rid of the Indigenous People. Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer. He was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa that is now Italy. Later in life, he settled down in Spain. Columbus first went to the sea as a teenager, and took part in several trading voyages. He then was trying to sail west across the Atlantic to reach Asia on his first voyage as an adult. Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that we celebrated first in 1937. The arrival of Columbus in the new world in October 12, 1492. • 32. Columbus Day And The Columbus Day Christopher Columbus is an Italian navigator who sailed west from Spain in 1492. He was in search for the Indies(India, China and Japan) through the waters due to hostile armies and long distances on land. Columbus thought he landed in the Indies when he actually landed in the Bahamas, welcomed in by the Taino(Native Americans). However, Columbus did not go there to spread Christianity, he forced the Taino into slavery, looting them, spreading deadly diseases that killed many Natives, and taking their land (causing other people to come to the Americas). However, Columbus day is celebrated by Americans thanking Columbus for finding America, but should we celebrate a man for terrorizing Native Americans? In addition, to all of this chaos, there is a huge debate going on if Confederate monuments should be allowed to stand or be taken down. These monuments come from the American Civil War, the North(Union) versus the South(Confederates). The South relied heavily on agriculture, using slaves to harvest their cotton. Some historians say that the South wanted to keep slavery, while others say that the South fought mostly for the right to decide their own affairs. Even though the North won, the South made monuments to make Confederate soldiers be portrayed as selfless heroes(no monuments have anything about pro– slavery). Columbus day should be celebrated and the Confederate monuments should stay because people cannot forget their history, people respect these things for different reasons, and people do not know the real reason to why Columbus day and Confederate monuments are really celebrated for. The Civil War and Columbus finding the Americas will always be in our history and can never be changed even if we try. Professor Leo Killsback of Arizona State University talked of how "Columbus Day is not a time of celebration but a reminder of "historic crimes" against Native Americans"; while Laura Anastasia; the author of the article " Monumental Battle", she gives an insight in how "We haven't really dealt with the legacy of the Civil War and slavery". • 33. The Importance Of Columbus Day On America In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. This mnemonic is known by most American adults and taught to children in some schools. However, this rhyme holds a belief in it that is not true. When children are taught that Columbus set sail in 1492, they are also taught that when he did so he discovered America. This is truly and utterly false. If Columbus Day is no longer named as such, the Native Americans will be celebrated and a minority group will be represented rather than a murder. By seeing that Columbus did not discover America, Columbus was a murder, and the holiday Celebrated based on a common misconception, Columbus Day can become a more enjoyable holiday for everyone. Many children and adults believe still believe that Columbus discovered America. Contrary to common belief, Columbus did not discover America and he never set out to prove the world was round. In Columbus's time, the fact that the earth was round was common knowledge. However, Columbus believed that the diameter of the earth was extremely small even though scientist had already proven otherwise (Blakemore). In 1942, Columbus sailed the ocean blue to prove that he could cross the Atlantic by boat in only four days (Blakemore). Of course, the King and Queen repeatedly rejected Columbus's requests for resources to sail until they were desperate enough and needed more resources. Ultimately, Columbus's famous discovery only happened because the Queen was desperate. Nevertheless, the Queen and King's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This question is highly debateable, but the accomplishments of Columbus overcome any doubt to whether he should be celebrated. While trying to get his journey funded, Columbus faced a problem. People thought that by going west, he would fall off of the world. Columbus established the virtues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As time has passed, people's morality have changed. Someone who blames Columbus for the slavery or murder of natives is uninformed on the standards of the time. At the time, these were acceptable and honorable. According to historian Virginia McConnell Simmons, slave trading was a common practice among the Ute Native American tribes which fueled the economy. Evidently, Columbus didn't bring slavery into theAmericas, nor did he commit anything out of the norm. Arguing that Columbus was a bad man because he sold some of the natives into slavery has no effect as to whether he should be celebrated. These charges do not afflict Columbus at all, or stand in the way of his achievements. Many opposers of Columbus blame him for abrading the natives rights. To say this is to completely disregard how the US government treated the natives so many times at the beginning of our settlement. For example, removing the Cherokees from georgia, where they had always lived was a big deal. The georgian government was selfish and wanted the territory for its natural resources, so they forced the natives westward. Americans don't hate the georgians for what happened in 1838, they understand that it was acceptable at the time, and the georgians were trying to gain wealth. If we forgive the Georgian government and President Jackson for this ordeal, then why can't we forgive Columbus for the same reasons?
