Christian Demonic Exorcism in the United States
The act of possession was a considered a source of illness that required a ritual type of healing to remove the demons or spirits taking control of that its
host. Exorcism was used as this type of healing that occurred all around the world, including the United States. Christianity believed that there were
demons that harassed, tormented and possessed humans which came from the New Testament. We learned that Satan was in charge of these acts in
which being possessed gave new skills and strength because of the demon inside of them. From the New Testament, Jesus was able to perform
exorcisms simply by demanding these demons to leave its host and soon after his disciples used this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There were other ways exorcism became popularized like the movie, The Exorcist, a 1973 film directed by William Friendkin, it is about a girl who
starts acting odd and her mother seeks medical help which did nothing until a local priest advises her to get a specialist to perform an exorcism.
This movie had to be the scariest of the time and it traumatized many viewers due to its graphical images and also knowing that it was loosely based
on actual events. This movie was inspired by the book based on true events from the exorcism of a demon on a 14 year old boy that lived in Mount
Rainier, Maryland. The author read news concerning the boy and that medical attention did not relieve any symptoms such as violent episodes and
outbursts of foul language. He claimed that the boy spoke a different language and was moving across the room on his bed while asleep. This type
of behavior could have been mental illness, or the case of actual demons possessing the body of the child. Cases like these attract attention
throughout the cities and some are real and others are just fabricated. During these rituals, the greatest danger to the exorcist is becoming possessed
by the demon or Devil himself. This is why most priests need to be free of sin so the evils spirits cannot take advantage of this and use it as
punishment against them otherwise the demon will easily take over. Malachi Martin claimed in his book, "Hostage to the Devil" (1976) that the

The Process of Exorcism Essay
When the term exorcism is mentioned, many people think of the devil–possessed head spinning, lead character in the 1973 movie The Exorcist. What
is the actual definition of exorcism that Hollywood does not share with us? Exorcism as defined by the Catholic Encyclopedia is (1) the act of
driving out, or warding off, demons, or evil spirits, from persons, places, or things, which are believed to be possessed or infested by them, or are
liable to become victims or instruments of their malice; (2) the means employed for this purpose, especially the solemn and authoritative adjuration of
the demon, in the name of God, or any of the higher power in which he is subject (Toner). However, man people are far less versed in the Roman

Christianity is mostly closely associated with Jesus Christ, its founder and premier exorcists. Out of all of Jesus' healing one–fourth of them dealt with
Exorcism and there are at least 26 references to exorcisms preformed by Jesus in the New Testament. Through out the Gospel many accounts of Jesus
performing exorcists are documented in the Gospel by his apostles (Bancroft.) The first accounts of Jesus performing types of exorcisms comes from
Mathew 4: 24. Matthew writes that Jesus cured all the people who were possessed, lunatics, and paralytic. This also integrates the idea that exorcism is
not just about free an individual from demonic possession, but also free them of mental and physical diseases as well. In the Gospel according to
Mark, Jesus casts out multiple demons named Legion out of man from Gerasenes, who would cry all night and bruise himself with stones, into a herd
of pigs who than ran off a cliff to their own demise (Mark 5: 1–20). Satan does not act alone when he posses an individual, he is working with several
evil spirits such as lust, hate, destruction, , anger, anxiety, desperation, suicide, revenge death and torment. Conversely Exorcism is not always seen
as a negative experience. In Acts 16: 16, It is told of a women possessed by an oracular spirit, literally a python spirit of whom was the guardian of
Delphic oracles. In

Angels And Demons : Good And Evil
Angels and demons are both good and evil. Both Erickson and Jank had an interesting perspective about angels and demons. Erickson talked about the
history of good and evil angels. Jank faced issues with tradition and beliefs due to fear which affected the Wilos. The witchdoctors used fear to control
the Wilos and practicing witchcraft is a form of demonic influence emanating from Satan. Satan is the master manipulator and he comes to steal, kill,
and destroy God's Kingdom. Demonic influences affect many people unaware due to fear and traditions. God gave us his word and good angels to
counteract satanic influence. There is a difference between natural fears and fear that comes from demonic influence. Jank talked about different
circumstances that gave one a clear depiction about how the Wilos were affected by evil spirits. Erickson provides a foundation about angels and
gives a background about demons. He classified angels per hierarchy and identifies those that are the closest to God and their assignments. On page
405 of Christian Theology, Erickson talked about Paul's insight when he stated that the law was given by angels, and humans were made lower order
than angels. Good angels follow the directive from God and bad angels follow Satan's command
Pride entered in Satan, he sinned and convinced a third of the angels in heaven to follow his leadership. Satan was the first to sin and he was the
originator of sin. God threw Satan out of heaven and Jesus talks

The Possession of Roland Doe
Levitating beds, loss of memory for long periods of time, loss of bladder control, speaking in tongues, these are all symptoms known to be
associated with possession. A possession is having control or owning (Farlex). When a person is possessed they have no control over their feelings
or actions a majority of the time. The reason it is called a possession is because, when one is possessed, the spirit or demon has control over that
person. The possession and exorcism of Roland Doe is one of the most documented possessions in history. Many still believe the case as fictional, but
there is significant evidence of Doe's possession. The exorcism of Roland Doe was an unusual and frightening experience. The movie, The Exorcism,

body were all effects that occurred during the final exorcism. Then at 11p.m. that night the boy interrupted Father Bowdern as he said in a voice
much deeper than his own 'Satan! Satan! I am St. Michael! I command you, Satan, and the other evil spirits to leave this body, in the name of
Dominus, immediately! Now! Now! Now!' Doe had one last spasm, then became very quiet and said, 'He is gone' (Opsasnick). (Mark
Opsasnick's, A Haunted Boy, is a reliable source that did extensive studies on Roland Doe. The author helps one get an understanding of what is
most known to have happened to Roland Doe. Opsasnick has a five part paper that describes what happened to Roland Doe during his possession

list of known, "facts", that are either proven true or false, along with much more information. It is apparent by reading Opsasnick's work that he put in

Dargahs Healing Essay
Dargahs Healing A River Runs Again is about Sufi shrines of deceased saints, which have become multi–religious centers of healing. In a nutshell,
possessed by wicked spirits (prets or jinns), people join the dargah in which they are exorcised in time by the grace of the saint. The battle between the
bad spirit and the good saint that takes place in the body of the host is called haziri. There are many different levels of rituals such as incensing the
smoke of labon, bathing in the dirty waters, or in the healing waters of the gardens (rauza), as well as a long process of learning the parables of Sufi
saints and prophets in Islamic history, which would provide a template for the experience of the possessed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In other words, dargahs "possess a symbolic authority that lacks an institutionalized relationship with actual political authority" (p.11). Such an
authority can only be accepted in places where people's beliefs include the existence of spirits, whether kind or wicked, while their social worldviews
recognizes the potential jealousy among themselves, which can cause harm through spirits. In a sense, then, Bellamy is right to state that this is a
South Asian phenomenon, highlighting the contextual "conditions of possibility" of such dargahs. She further states that healing is always actualized
in social forms: "healing is conceptualized and experienced through relationships with immediate and extended family member social integration
seems to be a major measure of one's level of recovery; recovery is only real when it is recognized and accepted by others" (p.58). Although situating
the practice along with its motivations, causes, effects, processes, implication, and outcomes in the cultural setting of South Asian is well documented
and analyzed by Bellamy, it is still amazing to see her dismissal of any psychological interpretations. She states that: "Healing in haziri develops out of
displacement rather than from any sort of enduring self–assertion on the part of the women themselves.... its power comes from time and place rather
than persons or personalities"

A Distinct Fascination With Exorcisms
In modern culture there is a distinct fascination with exorcisms. It is the focus of many movies and T.V.programs, however exorcism and possession
are topics that should not be used for the purpose of entertainment. Exorcism is the healing rite through which a person is released from the clutches of
an impure spirit. Through the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, the Church finds the origin of this sacred rite. These three gospels hold a plethora
of information about exorcism and possession in both individual accounts and logically stringing together information. For example, different demons
have different names. Although this is not specifically stated, one can observe Christ's accounts with demons, such as Beelzebub, Legion, and Satan, ...

In granting them that authority, Jesus gave them dominion over demons through himself. An authority that had not been granted to any other people,
which makes the rite of exorcism possible. In Luke 10:17–20, the seventy men Jesus had sent out with authority over demons came back amazed that
the demons fell subject to them in the power of Jesus' name. This authority is powerful which is why it was given to few selected by Jesus. Bishops
today, as apostolic successors, retain this authority granted by the apostles and can delegate that authority to a priest he appoints as an exorcist. The
most detailed account of the Geresene demoniac can be found in Mark 5: 1–20. The story begins with Jesus coming to the shore of the country of the
Geresenes and upon leaving the boat a man with an unclean spirit came out of the tombs and worshipped him, but then the man (under the influence of
Legion) begged Jesus not to torment him. The Geresene people feared this man and attempted to hold him with chains and shackles, however, the
demoniac's strength surpassed the chains and no one could hold him back. It is also recorded that he bruised himself and cried out day and night. Jesus
commanded the demon to leave the man,but when he did not Jesus asked his name. The demon replied "Legion, for we

Demonic Possession: A Theoretical Analysis
Possession rituals not only form social identities but also act as ways of healing for both the Harijans and Catholics. Sax describes how "ritual healing
sometimes "works" by addressing the social causes of stress–related disorders" (Sax, 231). For the Harijans, possession rituals provide spaces to
express their oppression, to be aided by the god Kachiya, and finally, to heal and move forward with their lives. Sax also explains that "placebos are
extremely effective (often more so than standard biomedical techniques), but also that the efficacy of conventional medical therapy depends to a
surprising degree on the healer's own confidence in his or her methods" (Sax, 245). Sax proves that such rituals do work for Harijans, and even though

If so, there is no evidence of it in the professional literature... It never occurred to the authors that some of those patients might really be possessed"
(Betty, 27). Betty raises important questions and insights within the medical sphere regarding the treatment of possession that deserve more
attention. Instead of wondering if possessions are real or not, or whether spirits or gods even exist, perhaps we should shift to focusing on what
such rituals do for people in the end. If these rituals are able to heal people dealing with a mental illness, daily effects of oppression, or the torments
of gods and spirits and familial ghosts, then what does it matter if we think they are real or not? If gods, spirits, familial ghosts, and the devil are real
to these people, then such entities are real, and it does little good to think less of these people or tell them they can only be treated with science and
medicine. Research has shown in both the Catholic and Harijan spheres that exorcisms and possession rituals often work, and if these groups of people
are able to heal, then people should respect those practices and remain open to the possibilities that they can

Exorcisms: Science or Fiction
The English word exorcism was derived from the Greek word exorkosis, which meant to "out–oath". Exorcisms are religious acts of evicting evil
entities out living or previously living things. The act of exorcisms is ancient and has been followed by many cultures and beliefs. Exorcisms are
performed in all parts of the world by priests of all religions, though it is more commonly done by priests in Abrahamic religions.
Exorcisms have been part of the Christian faith since the beginning onward to now. The Christian New Testament says exorcisms were one of the
miracles Jesus performed. Ever since the beginning exorcisms and demonic possessions have been part of the Christian faith. Exorcisms are still
recognized practices of Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox. Over the centuries the practice of exorcisms has decreased, mainly in western society. In
the 20th century it was mostly used and found in Eastern Europe and some parts of Africa. Multiple cases of exorcisms have gained attention from the
media, the most recent major one being Anneliese Michel. Many exorcisms victims were regarded as mentally ill.
The belief in Roman Catholicism is that exorcism is one ritual that isn't a sacrament. Catholic Exorcism is one of the most organized and inflexible
exorcism rituals among existing religions. Solemn exorcisms can be only performed by an appointed priest. In the Roman Ritual signs and indicators
of a possession are: speaking foreign or ancient languages that are not know to the

Types Of Exorcism
Types of Exorcism
Prayer is a powerful tool in the battle against evil and is also a powerful tool in exorcism. When we think about exorcisms, the first type of demonic
activity that likely comes to mind is demonic possession. Possession is the rarest form of spiritual activity but comes to mind of most people around
the world when we talk about exorcisms. Hollywood has capitalized on this type of demonic activity and has created hundreds of movie titles based
on this type of activity alone. However, the most common exorcisms are not at all like one would witness on the big screen. In fact, most Christians
have probably said a form of minor exorcism prayer since the Our Father is considered to be one. There are three main forms of exorcism that is
practiced within the Anglican Church: exorcism of objects, places and people.
Objects – Almost any object, other than a holy one, can be "infested."
Places – Some examples of the cause of unwanted activity within a place, according to the Exorcism: The Findings of a Commission Convened by the
Bishop of Exeter, include souls of the departed, human sin, place memories, poltergeist and demonic interference.
People – If a person requires an exorcism, the most important thing to keep in mind is the safety of the person affected and the safety of those around.
A thorough psychological examination should always be conducted first to rule out any natural underlying causes for the symptoms present. If it is
found to be a likely case of

The Old Testament And The New Testament
80. Why Is 'OWNERSHIP' An Illusion?
The two gospels, The Old Testament and The New Testament provide mirror images of Terrestrial Humans mentality Evolution and the comprehensive
overview of the mental developmental trends over a span covering last five millennia. The Old Testament moral norms served in establishing a legal
system with base in an absolute, irrevocable right of private ownership. Incontestable proof of continuous process of Evolution in this micro–segment of
Spiral is an emergence of 'The New Testament', as a herald of a new mental era on the Earth, which naturally succeeds 'TheOld Testament'. Needless to
remind, that The Old Testament also inspired adherents to vehemently follow the principle "an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth", a total
'defence of ownership' "...based on the superstition or the illusion that one was 'God 's chosen people' and was superior to all 'heathens' ". (Quote
from 'Livets Bog', Vol IV #1310)
Further, the Old World Testament advocates the ownership right over marriage and the emerged laws allowed a capital punishment in the instance of
the discovery of 'infidelity'. Even today, the same anti–civilization legal heritage package and outrageously severe unwritten rules represent daily
routine in the most conservative and primitive corners of the Globe. Marital fidelity defended by force and violence is definitively unsustainable
practice and turns "...marriage into an enforced consolidation of an imaginary right of ownership",

difficulty in dealing with ethics toward property is the immaturely nature in which modern property is becoming. As explained by Hill, primeval
property was physical however property as defined in today's culture is intangible (2008). Addressing the spiritual and moral dilemmas that property

Accounting Is The Language Of Business
Introduction
Accounting is the language of business. It is a profession that is being guided by principles, concepts, conventions, laws, etc. All these fundamental
building blocks serve as common and general compasses to all practitioners of the profession. In some cases, they are nation–wide tailored, while in
other cases, they are universally tailored. Accounting as a living, practical, dynamic and realistic profession covers so many areas of social, economic

##bolic Implications Of JesusExorcism In The Bible
In the synoptic gospels, Jesus' exorcisms are portrayed as one of the major acts in Jesus mission to the kingdom of God. The gospels not only narrate
Jesus casting out the demons and cleansing the possessed bodies, but also implicitly suggests the controversy he evokes among the Jewish and Roman
authorities of Judea and Galilee. The context of New Testament Gospels is deeply rooted in the Greco–Roman world and as such paints the
background of the Jesus' actions and messages. Several scholarly publications that analyze biblical texts from the social science perspective have
established a relationship between the politics and religion of the ancient world.
The aim of this paper is to assess the events of demon possession and exorcism narrated in the Bible not from a theological perspective but from
sociopolitical standpoint. Drawing references from scholarly publications on Bible, this paper would investigate the symbolic meanings of Jesus'
exorcism in socio–political sphere of Galilee and Judea at the very beginning of the first–century. This paper heavily relies upon the concepts proposed
by Amanda Witmer in her publication Jesus, the Galilean Exorcist, His Exorcisms in Social and Political Context.
The historically accurate reconstruction of Jesus is extremely improbable. This is largely due to the limited quantity of resources survived and those
that do, New Testament Gospels, are written under the lens of religious followers. As such, there exists great challenge in

is time to look at each of the accounts, and how they compare to one another. The account of the miracle in Mark is the longest, and most detailed of
the three, and I will be exploring it first. Luke's account is very similar to Mark's, and in fact it is believed that Luke used Mark as the sole source for
his account of the story, and simply changed the language possibly changing the meaning, and focus of the text for his Gospel , so I will look at his

In verse 2, and 3 the word ОјОЅО·ОјОµОЇП‰ОЅ is used meaning among the tombs . In verse 5 however a different word is used.
ОјОЅО®ОјО±ПѓО№ОЅ meaning as it is translated simply tomb . Making note of this distinction is important because if we look at the literal
meaning of the translation of the word used in verses 2, and 3 we get a clearer picture of the condition of the demon possessed man. The first word that
is used to describe the tomb emphasizes the fact that the man lived among the dead . I find this linguistic point interesting because it is an instance
where our English language is not adequate to describe what the author was trying to convey in his text. When we look at the underlying meaning of
the two separate words, and gain a deeper understanding of the underlying meaning of the first we get a more powerful picture of the circumstances
that this demon possessed man was in. Aside from living among the tombs the man also suffered in other ways due to his demon possession. One
example of this is 5:5 "Night and day among the tombs and on the mountain he was always howling and bruising himself with stones." (NRSV) these
two examples of the miserable state of the mans life are an illustration of the power that evil can have over a person . Understanding the extent of the
power that the evil demon had over the man makes the illustration of the power that Jesus has over the demon all the more

Once the purpose of the bailment has been completed, the bailee usually must return the property to the bailor, or account for it, depending upon the

creation of a bailment is the express or implied acceptance of possession or control over the property by the bailee. A person cannot unwittingly

The Exorcism Of Emily Rose
Exorcisms is the religious or spiritual practice of purportedly evicting demons or other spiritual entities from a person or an area they are believed to
have possessed, by definition. However, is there an actual demonic possession to one entity, or rather is it a mental condition? Exorcisms has been the
more popular choice lately in the U.S, and is thriving with the millennium; not to mention, amateur exorcisms are linked to deaths of their belief
needing to exorcise a demon physically (Listverse). Demonic possession and mental illness has closely related symptoms to schizophrenia, psychosis,
and bipolar disorder. The idea of demonic possession is sometimes thrown by some, believing that it has a logical, less religious, explanation, but the...

A quote from Opsasnick stated by, "To psychiatrists, Rob Doe [Roland Doe] suffered from mental illness. To priests this was a case of demonic
possession. To writers and film/video producers this was a great story to exploit for profit. Those involved saw what they were trained to see. Each
purported to look at the facts but just the opposite was true – in actuality they manipulated the facts and emphasized information that fit their own
agendas." Roland was an only child, and he was close to his Aunt Harriet, she was an spiritualist and has shown Roland the Ouija Board. Roland's
symptoms of his demonic possession was described to be "childishly simple" from the writings of skeptic Joe Nickell. In addition, the author Mark
Opsasnick explained that he proposed that the boy who under under the suspicion to be possessed by a demon, "was simply a spoiled, disturbed bully
who threw deliberate tantrums to get attention or to get out of school." Roland Doe was a thirteen year old boy, he was diagnosed to be possessed by
the devil. After having fun with the ouija board that his aunt introduced him to, strange occurrences began to happen around the home such as:
uncertain sounds ("thumping, tapping and banging coming from an otherwise empty upstairs, or objects moving on their own such as the chandelier

Essay On The Exorcist
There are many real life horror stories that drew a lot of attention. There are many movies, books and even songs about those real life time horror events.
For instance the movie "The Exorcist" is a 1973 American Supernatural horror film directed by William Friedkin, released in 1973. Thefilm is based on
a true story that happened in the late 1940's, in the United States. The story is documented under the pseudonym "Ronald Doe" or "Robbie Mannheim".
A 14–year–old boy was the alleged victim of demonic possession, and the events were recorded by the attending priest, Raymond Bishop.
According to Thomas B (one of the last surviving eyewitnesses of the exorcism event) said that the family experienced strange noises, furniture moving
on its own accord and ordinary objects flying or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows that it is actually a possessed kid because a 14–year–old boy won't be able to do the action he did, and it's in fact a demon controlling his
body.
At the next exorcism ritual, Halloran who is the exorcising priest stated that during the ritual there were words such as "evil" and "hell", along with
other various marks, appeared on the teenager's body, the boy's mattress began to shake.
The Plot of the Movie "The Exorcist":
We are told about a girl named Regan who is 12–years–old, her mother notices changes in her behavior. At first her mother thinks that these behavior
changes are related to Regan puberty. Regan begins acting strangely, including making mysterious noises, stealing, and constantly using obscene
language. The doctors, thinking that Regan only believes she is possessed, recommend an exorcism to be performed. Both priests witness Regan
perform a series of bizarre, vulgar acts, and confine her to her

Exorcism: Beliefs & Practices
Exorcism:
Beliefs and Practices
Introduction
Exorcism, by definition, is 'the expulsion or attempted expulsion of an evil spirit from a person or place' (Dictionary.com). For this research paper, I
have chosen to research exorcism and the beliefs, history and practices that go along with it. This is a topic that has always interested and been
fascinating to me. There have been numerous movies, documentaries, and stories written and performed relating to exorcism– both claiming to be true
and fictional– and it was a topic I was deeply curious to learn more about. This paper will explore the history and beliefs of exorcism and will also
explore the role of the exorcist, which is the person who is intended to rid the affected of their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The article goes into more depth on whether believers can be possessed by demons. It states that 'tthe good angels are the holy ones, the bad angels
are the evil ones, which the Bible calls demons, and the ugly angels are demons disguising themselves as good angels. These ugly angels have
deceived many people in a culture that has embraced "angel mania"'(Demonology).
The Role of the Exorcist
An exorcist is a person who is believed to be able to cast out demons. By definition, they are " a person who performs the ridding of demons or
other supernatural beings who are alleged to have possessed a person, or (sometimes) a building or even an object" (Dictionary.com). It was said
in Toner's article that 'strolling Jews who professed to be able to cast out demons' were the first ever exorcists (Toner). Toner's article describes the
role of exorcists by stating, "Depending on the spiritual beliefs of the exorcist, this [ridding the affected of their demons] may be done by causing the
entity to swear an oath, performing an elaborate ritual, or simply by commanding it to depart in the name of a higher power (Toner). Exorcists are not
known to be able to only rid people of their demons or demonic possession but are also believed to have

The Effects Of Demonic Possession And Psychological Illness
Many have tried to argue for the existence of demonic possession, some even go so far as to say that demonic possession and psychological illnesses
are fundamentally different. If mental illness and demonic possession are not simply different names for the same thing, then we are left with two
possibilities. Either they are unrelated phenomena, or there is some kind of association between them. Of course, even if they are unrelated, they may
still be confused with each other because of superficial similarities. If they are related, however, we need to understand the nature of the connection
between them. Thus, we may be faced with a differential diagnostic problem. Either we need to distinguish which of these two entities we are dealing
with, or else we need to identify which is the primary problem which led to the other as a secondary 'complication.'
The goal of this paper is to thoroughly analyze the history of demonic in comparison to the psychological illness, schizophrenia, a disorder that remains
without a complete cure and is still extremely debilitating for the diagnosed if they are not receiving treatment. This will be done by describing both
the origin of demonic possession and schizophrenia, identifying the way each are diagnosed, and how they are treated. I will then provide an example
of an exorcism done to banish a demon where schizophrenia might have been a better diagnosis. I will finally discuss why demonic possession and the
illness schizophrenia are

Reaction Paper On Exorcism
Exorcisms are rituals performed on those speculated to be possessed by an evil spirit. The exorcists who do the act of removing demons are typically
Catholic priests. An exorcism is the process of driving out demons, associated with primitive Roman Catholic beliefs. Though the idea of exorcisms are
mainly related to Roman Catholics, there is documentation of Jesus Christ performing an exorcism in the Holy Bible. This is a much older concept that
is not widely believed the way it was in earlier society.
Possession occurs when a person, place, or thing is taken over by a demon; which is when exorcisms become necessary. Baptismal and simple
exorcisms are preformed to avert possession, while a real exorcism takes place after possession. The theory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first is recognizing the presence of the demon. The second is pretense, the demon does its best to act as if they are the person they are
possessing. The exorcist tries their best to discover the demon's name, which gives the exorcist control over the demon. The breakpoint is when the
demon reveals their identity, they will speak in their own voice. During the step that is referred to as the clash, the exorcist and demon battle each
other to win over the being of the possessed. If the exorcist is successful throughout the first four steps, then the fifth is expulsion. At this point, the
demon has either departed or was killed. Each of these five steps have to be done correctly in order for the demon to be driven out.
The success of an exorcism is dependent upon the exorcist. Your typical priest most likely isn't trained to perform an exorcism. However, each
Catholic church needs at least one exorcist. IAEO, the International Association of Exorcists, was established in 1992. Pauline Fr. Gabriele Amorth is
supposedly the founder of this organization that originated in Rome. There are over five hundred members in the IAEO, even though exorcisms today
are extremely rare. An exorcist must be exceedingly educated on exorcisms and dedicated to warding off evil

The Tar Heel Family Resort Development Plan
For every situation that Martin had to deal with, the battle against eminent domain in regard to his coastal property is where there is a disagreement.
Although, the Kelo case gave precedence to the confiscation of personal property for economic development, the party that is executing the
condemnation must prove that the confiscation will lead to an economic development that will benefit the common good. Within the proposal of the
Tar Heel Family Resort development plan, there is no indication that the development would be for public use. The only broad stroke benefit it may
apply to the public is the creation of jobs, which, if the judge uses a broad visionary approach to the concept of eminent domain, the resort may succeed.
However, if the judge uses a narrow scope of the term, and that eminent domain will only hold if it's for public accommodations, then Martin will
succeed. The two categories are further detailed by Hoyman and McCall:
The first category, the "narrow" justification of eminent domain authority, means that the power is used for "traditional" public use (Epstein 2005),
such as water and sewer systems, prisons, roads, hospitals, government office buildings, and other similar projects. The second category, the "broad"
interpretation of permissible eminent domain use, includes private redevelopment projects that arguably would benefit the public at large (Malloy
2008), by bringing jobs and revenue to a particular jurisdiction (P. 886).

Love And Love In The Book Of Love Possessed By Gabriel...
In the book "Of Love and Other Demons" written by Gabriel Marquez, Main Character Sierva Maria is a young child whose existence had been
neglected from birth by her father, The second Marquis of Casalduero, and her mother, a once powerful Merchant. She lives her life, peacefully,
among the slaves in their quarters until she is one day bitten by a rabid dog. Once the news had spread of the bite, the question of not only life and
death, but demonic possession and love come into play. The article, "By Love Possessed" written by A.S Byatt, closely analyzes the life Sierva
suffered after the bite and if the demons in the title of the work are really the ones the Church believes is possessing her. Love is subliminally
introduced throughout the piece and the only 'demon' named in the title. Knowing that love is the worst demon of all, the "other demons" mentioned
in the work never resided in Sierva, but in the sins of man. When Sierva was bitten, the only people who knew about it were the slaves. After a few
rituals, the bite slowly began to heal and she showed no signs of contracting the deadly disease of rabies. Once her father, the Marquis, made the
discovery of what had occurred, he made Sierva live within the house instead of the slave quarters. Not suited to the environment, Sierva never spoke
and rarely showed any form of emotion. The Marquis did everything he could to figure out how to save her, not only from possibly contracting rabies,
but from what was making her act

The Effects Of Exorcism On The Evil Spirit
In all aspects of life, people come across things that simply cannot be explained. Whether people choose to believe something or not; it still is
prevalent in life. Exorcism is the expulsion or attempted expulsion of an evil spirit from a person or a place (https://www.google.com). In horror films,
the main focus during the exorcism is on the evil spirit. Films have negatively drawn our attention to evil spirit because it is more interesting to watch.
But in reality, behind every exorcism there is an exorcist that risks his life to save another: "And the exorcist, who risks more than anyone else in an
exorcism, flits across the screen as necessary but, in the end, not so interesting as the sound effects" (Martin 8). Exorcists are the ... Show more content

An exorcist risks his life during an exorcism and has to be prepared for the end result–he may die or a part of him may die. Many exorcists are not the
same after they come in contact with pure evil. (Martin 10). Not all exorcisms are preformed because of the possession of another human being. In
fact, most exorcisms are preformed in haunted buildings infested with evil spirits, which is known as demonic infestation. The other types of
infestation are oppression and possession. Oppression is when a demon focuses on a particular person and possession is when the person has allowed
the demon to take over its whole body. The most common form, demonic infestation, occurred in the Cranmer house. Bob Cranmer had bought his
childhood dream house. But, after a few months of living there, a demon had made itself present. Bob Cranmer had brought in Father Mike
Salvagna, a priest, and Adam Blai, a psychiatrist, to get rid of the demon. The demon's name was Moloch, whom was usually associated with child
sacrifice in the Old Testament. Moloch was in complete control of all possession in the house. After the priest threw holy water on the walls, Moloch
fought back by making the walls bleed; which there was no scientific evidence in how the blood had gotten there. The strange part of this story is that
the demon did not cause a scene as the priest preformed the exorcism. Bob Cranmer described it "like a

The Godfather, The Exorcist, And The Silence Of The Lambs
The Godfather, The Exorcist, and The Silence of the Lambs are three films that are often given the title "greatest of all time" in their respective genre,
for very good reason. Each film consists of scenes that are crafted so unforgettably that the scenes leave each viewer with a sense of awe, shock, and
horror when each scene is carefully examined. The Godfather, distributed in 1972 by Paramount Pictures, was directed by Francis Ford Coppola who in
an interview said in regards to his filmmaking that "If you don't take a risk then how are you going to make something really beautiful, that hasn't
been seen before?" (1). The Godfather certainly presented cinema with iconic and memorable scenes that were both beautiful and never before seen
largely due to the new and risky ways Francis Ford Coppola presented The Godfather's narrative. Similarly, The Exorcist chilled the bones of
audiences everywhere by shocking the world with grueling demonic possession in a tangible way that had never been presented before by cinema.
The scenes in The Exorcist were particularly memorable because the scenes resonated with a large majority of American audiences who came from
religious backgrounds where demonic possession is a sincere possibility; never before had a film brought Americans face–to–face with The Devil,
Hell, and sin by means of horror. Horror was also a key element in Jonathan Demme's 1991 classic The Silence of the Lambs. Horror made each scene
very memorable, particularly when

Examples Of Demonic Possession
Demonic Possession Demons are known through scary movies and scary stories told by people just to cause a scare. But what if they're real?
Demons have been documented well through history, possessing ordinary humans and wrecking havoc. People can laugh it off and say that
possession isn't real, but have they ever seen one? In Africa, this kind of thing happens on the daily and it's a lot more terrifying than what is
shown on t.v. or in the movies. Demons, the process of exorcisms, and Michael Taylor are very "real" and very scary. What are demons? Demons
are creatures or evil spirits sent from hell to terrorize and "undo" mankind. Demons are sent here to raise heck for us, trying to get us to rip ourselves

Michael Taylor didn't have a very religious life. He believed in God, but he didn't follow. He had a wife, Christine, two children, and a poodle. One
day, Christine told him that he should go to this bible study group and start learning more about Jesus and God. He agreed and started to attend.
As time went on, he became more and more involved with the group to the point where he was spending more time with them than his family.
Christine later figured out that he was having an affair with the leader of the group. He had been becoming more aggressive and unlike himself,
causing worry to his wife and everyone around him. Later on, Christine confronted him about it and he then started to talk in a very deep voice and
started growling animalistically. She started screaming at him in tongues and he screamed back at her in tongues. According to her, he had a very
wild look in her eyes and she felt very threatened. She started screaming "Jesus" over and over again, which she later on said saved her life. They
took him to the church where priests started the exorcism. It lasted for several hours and the priests were exhausted so they told him to go home, but
they needed to be back early the next morning because although they expelled 40 demons, three remained: Murder, violence, and insanity. A witness
told the priests that she heard a voice telling her that he was going to kill her and that they needed to finish it. But

For many years the genre of horror has provided entertainment to audiences through horrifying gore, monsters, violence, and the supernatural. The most
frightening type of horror is demonic possession, which is why it forms such a fascination. It creates extreme suspense, curiosity, and relevance.
Through the formalist and psychoanalytical approach in the film Annabelle directed by John R. Leonetti, the article "The Horrors of Witchcraft and
Demonic Possession" by Brian P. Levack, and the short story "Devils Movie", it is evident as to why individuals are so fascinated with the demonic

Her husband tries to convince her that it is not real, but she does not know what to believe. Mia is home alone and sees the women from the

Father Karras tried to reason with Mrs. MacNeil that the girl, Regan MacNeil, was likely to have a mental illness. Father Karras finally agreed to

Besides the doctors who tried diagnosing Regan, Father Karras suggested that Regan had split personality and tried to explain it to Chris:
The human brain contains, say, seventeen billion cells... we see that they handle approximately a hundred million messages per second; that's the
number of sensations bombarding your body. They not only integrate all of these messages, but they do it efficiently... Now imagine that the human
body is a massive ocean liner... all of your brain cells are the crew... Now the captain is you, it's your waking consciousness. And what happens in dual
personality is that one of those crew cells down below deck comes up on the bridge and takes over command. In other words, mutiny. (Blatty 240)
Father Karras suggests that Regan has multiple personalities rather than being possessed because he believes that an exorcism is not the solution for
what Regan is experiencing. Chris is told that her daughter is not possessed, but she is sick. In order to find the correct illness, Chris took Regan to
multiple doctors so that they could properly diagnose her. The first doctor that Regan went to gave her an electroencephalograph, or an EEG, which
shows the doctors the pattern of her brain waves and would indicate abnormal functioning of the brain (Blatty 108). With the test being done on Regan,
the doctor hoped to find symptoms that could match an illness. As a result, the EEG showed that Regan did not have abnormal functioning due

Alastair Pennycook's: The Meaning Of Authorship
Fading authorship and what leads to its demise For a long period of time, there has not been any crime that is as severe as plagiarism in either the
literary field or the academic realm. Ostensibly, modern people have made considerable effort in avoiding plagiarism, punishing plagiarists, protecting
intellectual rights and maintaining textual authorship. Alastair Pennycook, as a linguist who specializes in English language, showed that plagiarism
would put writers' authorship at stake. In this essay I will argue that, notwithstanding the earnest ethical endeavor people have made, there is an
irreversible trend in the fading of the authorship from the aspects of postmodern actualities, power relations in society, and the essence of language...

Pennycook concluded his essay by reemphasizing that "all language learning is to some extent a process of borrowing others' words" (227).
Indeed, we seldom create new words on our own. What we write and say is a borrowing of words since the first day we began to learn this
language. It is impossible for any language learner to pick up one language without repeating or memorizing others' words. When Pennycook
constantly used the word "borrow" in his essay, he had acknowledged that those who used those words do not actually possess the words, rather they
need to "borrow" the words from elsewhere. He unconsciously denied the authorship due to the essence of the language learning as a massive textual

The Haunted : A Short Story Of The Haunted
The Haunted
This is a story about two cool boys who encountered an evil spirit that comes out every December 1st, to collect people's heads and keep them as
trophies.
A long time ago on December 1st, 1975, there was a boy named Steve. Steve was a lovely boy who loved to have fun and hangout with his friends
and talk with his girlfriend. But one night he encountered a cave he shouldn't have crossed. There was a stone with torches around it and had a note on
it that said "The sacred diamonds." This made him very uncomfortable and he tried to leave but then, an evil spirit named Herobrine possessed Steve
and soon, he became the ultimate executioner. He injured children, his friends, his own girlfriend and teenagers around the world. But there would be
a time when he would choose his next victim, and have a very special plan for them.
The month was December and the year was 2050. The world had gone into its advanced years where technology would be better than previous
years. There was a village and there were two boys who lived in a wooden house on 31st street with two balconies and two rooms, two kitchens and
a giant basement. The boys names were Norman and Anthony. They both had jobs, lot's of friends and each had a girlfriend. One night, Norman sat

The Message For Original Audience
Message for Original Audience/Contemporary Audience:
Original Audience: How did Jesus/Mark want to transform the audience?
Summarize: What is the starting state of the implied audience? What is the new state to which they should move? What strategies does Jesus/Mark use
to move them from starting state to end state?
Mark presents a confrontation between Jesus and the evil spirits that controlled the man. Mark impressed the audience of the horrible situation the man
was in as described in 5:3 using ОїбЅђОґбЅІ (not even) бјЃО»ПЌПѓОµО№ (anymore) ОїбЅђОґОµбЅ¶П‚ (no one). The evil spirits were a legion and
they attempted to resist exorcism but fail. They went into the pigs and went into the sea. People in the town were afraid of the scene and saw the man
restored back to his right mind. They had no idea about Jesus and how this could happen.
The name of Jesus was spread in the Decapolis through the healed demon–possessed man and people were amazed. People should know that Jesus is
not the only the Messiah of the Jewish people but also the savior of the Gentiles. He has authority over the evil spirits.
Mark is using this confrontation to show that Jesus is the Son of God and has authority over the evil spirits. The healed man is a good testimony and he
is the one spreading the good news about Jesus.

Finding Deep Meaning Of Film
Finding Deep Meaning in Film As was demonstrated in my analysis of Uys' (1980) film, the techniques used for biblical interpretation may be used
not merely for biblical interpretation or as a means to read literature as an example of the modern parable. These techniques may also be used to the
interpretation of film as a medium of communication. Rosenberg, Lucchesi, Boardman, Vinson, Flynn, and Derrickson's (2005), The exorcism of Emily
Rose, provides a wonderful platform for examining these techniques as it is fraught with meaning, should the viewer take time to peel back the layers
of the onion. Rosenberg et al. (2005) tells the story of the death of Emily Rose and the Catholic priest who is charged with the negligent homicide. On

There are many theological themes that flow from the basic narrative if one takes time to consider them. Beyond the question of the cause of Emily's
death, one finds themes that relate to faith and rational thought, the existence of God and demons, the relationship between faith and science, suffering
and faith, compassion and pain, and submission to a higher authority. While I will not take the time to delve into each one of these themes
independently, I will select a few that are the most critical to this author. The first theme that becomes apparent is an overt attack on religion. Early
on in the film, we find a group of lawyers talking about who will prosecute the case. It is stated that, "We need a Christian on this, preferably a
Catholic. Someone who knows this stuff inside and out, and who the public will see as unbiased. We're going after a holy man here" (Rosenberg et al,
2005). It was not merely about identifying a prosecutor who was capable, but one who took attack the faith and discredit the exorcism rite. The
courtroom attacks on Father Moore continue in this vain claiming that his views were based upon, "archaic and irrational superstition" (Rosenberg et
al, 2005). The Christian faith is depicted as the product of fiction; because it cannot be rationalized. A second theme that flows from the film is the
question of the existence of God and demons. Peter Chattaway (n.d.),

The Biblical Warning Of God
We all have that concept of evil. Each religion has that dark figure that beckons enticingly to pull us from the path of whatever deity we've devoted
ourselves to. Lucifer for the Judeo–Christians, Iblees for the Muslims, Mara for the Buddhists; whatever one calls it, there is evil that looks to sway
people from their path of faith. So of course we as people, feel the need to set up defenses to prevent such a thing. The biblical warning that "Your

the Evil is just a scary image, but how can we possibly take precautions when suddenly that Evil can inhabit us whether we resist or not. No matter
how different we are from each other, Demonic Possession is something that all cultures seem to have, with their own remedies to the issue. The
concept of demonic possession is something that's existed for an unclear amount of time. The Bible alludes to many instances of demons being driven

Christian Supernatural Of The United States

  • 1. Christian Supernatural Of The United States Christian Demonic Exorcism in the United States The act of possession was a considered a source of illness that required a ritual type of healing to remove the demons or spirits taking control of that its host. Exorcism was used as this type of healing that occurred all around the world, including the United States. Christianity believed that there were demons that harassed, tormented and possessed humans which came from the New Testament. We learned that Satan was in charge of these acts in which being possessed gave new skills and strength because of the demon inside of them. From the New Testament, Jesus was able to perform exorcisms simply by demanding these demons to leave its host and soon after his disciples used this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were other ways exorcism became popularized like the movie, The Exorcist, a 1973 film directed by William Friendkin, it is about a girl who starts acting odd and her mother seeks medical help which did nothing until a local priest advises her to get a specialist to perform an exorcism. This movie had to be the scariest of the time and it traumatized many viewers due to its graphical images and also knowing that it was loosely based on actual events. This movie was inspired by the book based on true events from the exorcism of a demon on a 14 year old boy that lived in Mount Rainier, Maryland. The author read news concerning the boy and that medical attention did not relieve any symptoms such as violent episodes and outbursts of foul language. He claimed that the boy spoke a different language and was moving across the room on his bed while asleep. This type of behavior could have been mental illness, or the case of actual demons possessing the body of the child. Cases like these attract attention throughout the cities and some are real and others are just fabricated. During these rituals, the greatest danger to the exorcist is becoming possessed by the demon or Devil himself. This is why most priests need to be free of sin so the evils spirits cannot take advantage of this and use it as punishment against them otherwise the demon will easily take over. Malachi Martin claimed in his book, "Hostage to the Devil" (1976) that the successes from doing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Process of Exorcism Essay When the term exorcism is mentioned, many people think of the devil–possessed head spinning, lead character in the 1973 movie The Exorcist. What is the actual definition of exorcism that Hollywood does not share with us? Exorcism as defined by the Catholic Encyclopedia is (1) the act of driving out, or warding off, demons, or evil spirits, from persons, places, or things, which are believed to be possessed or infested by them, or are liable to become victims or instruments of their malice; (2) the means employed for this purpose, especially the solemn and authoritative adjuration of the demon, in the name of God, or any of the higher power in which he is subject (Toner). However, man people are far less versed in the Roman Catholic form ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Christianity is mostly closely associated with Jesus Christ, its founder and premier exorcists. Out of all of Jesus' healing one–fourth of them dealt with Exorcism and there are at least 26 references to exorcisms preformed by Jesus in the New Testament. Through out the Gospel many accounts of Jesus performing exorcists are documented in the Gospel by his apostles (Bancroft.) The first accounts of Jesus performing types of exorcisms comes from Mathew 4: 24. Matthew writes that Jesus cured all the people who were possessed, lunatics, and paralytic. This also integrates the idea that exorcism is not just about free an individual from demonic possession, but also free them of mental and physical diseases as well. In the Gospel according to Mark, Jesus casts out multiple demons named Legion out of man from Gerasenes, who would cry all night and bruise himself with stones, into a herd of pigs who than ran off a cliff to their own demise (Mark 5: 1–20). Satan does not act alone when he posses an individual, he is working with several evil spirits such as lust, hate, destruction, , anger, anxiety, desperation, suicide, revenge death and torment. Conversely Exorcism is not always seen as a negative experience. In Acts 16: 16, It is told of a women possessed by an oracular spirit, literally a python spirit of whom was the guardian of Delphic oracles. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Angels And Demons : Good And Evil Angels and demons are both good and evil. Both Erickson and Jank had an interesting perspective about angels and demons. Erickson talked about the history of good and evil angels. Jank faced issues with tradition and beliefs due to fear which affected the Wilos. The witchdoctors used fear to control the Wilos and practicing witchcraft is a form of demonic influence emanating from Satan. Satan is the master manipulator and he comes to steal, kill, and destroy God's Kingdom. Demonic influences affect many people unaware due to fear and traditions. God gave us his word and good angels to counteract satanic influence. There is a difference between natural fears and fear that comes from demonic influence. Jank talked about different circumstances that gave one a clear depiction about how the Wilos were affected by evil spirits. Erickson provides a foundation about angels and gives a background about demons. He classified angels per hierarchy and identifies those that are the closest to God and their assignments. On page 405 of Christian Theology, Erickson talked about Paul's insight when he stated that the law was given by angels, and humans were made lower order than angels. Good angels follow the directive from God and bad angels follow Satan's command Pride entered in Satan, he sinned and convinced a third of the angels in heaven to follow his leadership. Satan was the first to sin and he was the originator of sin. God threw Satan out of heaven and Jesus talks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Possession of Roland Doe Levitating beds, loss of memory for long periods of time, loss of bladder control, speaking in tongues, these are all symptoms known to be associated with possession. A possession is having control or owning (Farlex). When a person is possessed they have no control over their feelings or actions a majority of the time. The reason it is called a possession is because, when one is possessed, the spirit or demon has control over that person. The possession and exorcism of Roland Doe is one of the most documented possessions in history. Many still believe the case as fictional, but there is significant evidence of Doe's possession. The exorcism of Roland Doe was an unusual and frightening experience. The movie, The Exorcism, is a movie ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, depart and vanish from this creature of God.... Seizures, outbursts, cursing, vomiting, and scratches on Doe's body were all effects that occurred during the final exorcism. Then at 11p.m. that night the boy interrupted Father Bowdern as he said in a voice much deeper than his own 'Satan! Satan! I am St. Michael! I command you, Satan, and the other evil spirits to leave this body, in the name of Dominus, immediately! Now! Now! Now!' Doe had one last spasm, then became very quiet and said, 'He is gone' (Opsasnick). (Mark Opsasnick's, A Haunted Boy, is a reliable source that did extensive studies on Roland Doe. The author helps one get an understanding of what is most known to have happened to Roland Doe. Opsasnick has a five part paper that describes what happened to Roland Doe during his possession and exorcisms, reasons why Roland's behavior could not be medically explained, excerpts straight from Father Gallagher's diary, where Doe is now, a list of known, "facts", that are either proven true or false, along with much more information. • 5. Dargahs Healing Essay Dargahs Healing A River Runs Again is about Sufi shrines of deceased saints, which have become multi–religious centers of healing. In a nutshell, possessed by wicked spirits (prets or jinns), people join the dargah in which they are exorcised in time by the grace of the saint. The battle between the bad spirit and the good saint that takes place in the body of the host is called haziri. There are many different levels of rituals such as incensing the smoke of labon, bathing in the dirty waters, or in the healing waters of the gardens (rauza), as well as a long process of learning the parables of Sufi saints and prophets in Islamic history, which would provide a template for the experience of the possessed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other words, dargahs "possess a symbolic authority that lacks an institutionalized relationship with actual political authority" (p.11). Such an authority can only be accepted in places where people's beliefs include the existence of spirits, whether kind or wicked, while their social worldviews recognizes the potential jealousy among themselves, which can cause harm through spirits. In a sense, then, Bellamy is right to state that this is a South Asian phenomenon, highlighting the contextual "conditions of possibility" of such dargahs. She further states that healing is always actualized in social forms: "healing is conceptualized and experienced through relationships with immediate and extended family member social integration seems to be a major measure of one's level of recovery; recovery is only real when it is recognized and accepted by others" (p.58). Although situating the practice along with its motivations, causes, effects, processes, implication, and outcomes in the cultural setting of South Asian is well documented and analyzed by Bellamy, it is still amazing to see her dismissal of any psychological interpretations. She states that: "Healing in haziri develops out of displacement rather than from any sort of enduring self–assertion on the part of the women themselves.... its power comes from time and place rather than persons or personalities" ... • 6. A Distinct Fascination With Exorcisms In modern culture there is a distinct fascination with exorcisms. It is the focus of many movies and T.V.programs, however exorcism and possession are topics that should not be used for the purpose of entertainment. Exorcism is the healing rite through which a person is released from the clutches of an impure spirit. Through the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, the Church finds the origin of this sacred rite. These three gospels hold a plethora of information about exorcism and possession in both individual accounts and logically stringing together information. For example, different demons have different names. Although this is not specifically stated, one can observe Christ's accounts with demons, such as Beelzebub, Legion, and Satan, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In granting them that authority, Jesus gave them dominion over demons through himself. An authority that had not been granted to any other people, which makes the rite of exorcism possible. In Luke 10:17–20, the seventy men Jesus had sent out with authority over demons came back amazed that the demons fell subject to them in the power of Jesus' name. This authority is powerful which is why it was given to few selected by Jesus. Bishops today, as apostolic successors, retain this authority granted by the apostles and can delegate that authority to a priest he appoints as an exorcist. The most detailed account of the Geresene demoniac can be found in Mark 5: 1–20. The story begins with Jesus coming to the shore of the country of the Geresenes and upon leaving the boat a man with an unclean spirit came out of the tombs and worshipped him, but then the man (under the influence of Legion) begged Jesus not to torment him. The Geresene people feared this man and attempted to hold him with chains and shackles, however, the demoniac's strength surpassed the chains and no one could hold him back. It is also recorded that he bruised himself and cried out day and night. Jesus commanded the demon to leave the man,but when he did not Jesus asked his name. The demon replied "Legion, for we ... • 7. Demonic Possession: A Theoretical Analysis Possession rituals not only form social identities but also act as ways of healing for both the Harijans and Catholics. Sax describes how "ritual healing sometimes "works" by addressing the social causes of stress–related disorders" (Sax, 231). For the Harijans, possession rituals provide spaces to express their oppression, to be aided by the god Kachiya, and finally, to heal and move forward with their lives. Sax also explains that "placebos are extremely effective (often more so than standard biomedical techniques), but also that the efficacy of conventional medical therapy depends to a surprising degree on the healer's own confidence in his or her methods" (Sax, 245). Sax proves that such rituals do work for Harijans, and even though the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If so, there is no evidence of it in the professional literature... It never occurred to the authors that some of those patients might really be possessed" (Betty, 27). Betty raises important questions and insights within the medical sphere regarding the treatment of possession that deserve more attention. Instead of wondering if possessions are real or not, or whether spirits or gods even exist, perhaps we should shift to focusing on what such rituals do for people in the end. If these rituals are able to heal people dealing with a mental illness, daily effects of oppression, or the torments of gods and spirits and familial ghosts, then what does it matter if we think they are real or not? If gods, spirits, familial ghosts, and the devil are real to these people, then such entities are real, and it does little good to think less of these people or tell them they can only be treated with science and medicine. Research has shown in both the Catholic and Harijan spheres that exorcisms and possession rituals often work, and if these groups of people are able to heal, then people should respect those practices and remain open to the possibilities that they can ... • 8. Exorcisms: Science or Fiction The English word exorcism was derived from the Greek word exorkosis, which meant to "out–oath". Exorcisms are religious acts of evicting evil entities out living or previously living things. The act of exorcisms is ancient and has been followed by many cultures and beliefs. Exorcisms are performed in all parts of the world by priests of all religions, though it is more commonly done by priests in Abrahamic religions. Exorcisms have been part of the Christian faith since the beginning onward to now. The Christian New Testament says exorcisms were one of the miracles Jesus performed. Ever since the beginning exorcisms and demonic possessions have been part of the Christian faith. Exorcisms are still recognized practices of Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox. Over the centuries the practice of exorcisms has decreased, mainly in western society. In the 20th century it was mostly used and found in Eastern Europe and some parts of Africa. Multiple cases of exorcisms have gained attention from the media, the most recent major one being Anneliese Michel. Many exorcisms victims were regarded as mentally ill. The belief in Roman Catholicism is that exorcism is one ritual that isn't a sacrament. Catholic Exorcism is one of the most organized and inflexible exorcism rituals among existing religions. Solemn exorcisms can be only performed by an appointed priest. In the Roman Ritual signs and indicators of a possession are: speaking foreign or ancient languages that are not know to the ... • 9. Types Of Exorcism Types of Exorcism Prayer is a powerful tool in the battle against evil and is also a powerful tool in exorcism. When we think about exorcisms, the first type of demonic activity that likely comes to mind is demonic possession. Possession is the rarest form of spiritual activity but comes to mind of most people around the world when we talk about exorcisms. Hollywood has capitalized on this type of demonic activity and has created hundreds of movie titles based on this type of activity alone. However, the most common exorcisms are not at all like one would witness on the big screen. In fact, most Christians have probably said a form of minor exorcism prayer since the Our Father is considered to be one. There are three main forms of exorcism that is practiced within the Anglican Church: exorcism of objects, places and people. Objects – Almost any object, other than a holy one, can be "infested." Places – Some examples of the cause of unwanted activity within a place, according to the Exorcism: The Findings of a Commission Convened by the Bishop of Exeter, include souls of the departed, human sin, place memories, poltergeist and demonic interference. People – If a person requires an exorcism, the most important thing to keep in mind is the safety of the person affected and the safety of those around. A thorough psychological examination should always be conducted first to rule out any natural underlying causes for the symptoms present. If it is found to be a likely case of ... The gospels not only narrate Jesus casting out the demons and cleansing the possessed bodies, but also implicitly suggests the controversy he evokes among the Jewish and Roman authorities of Judea and Galilee. The context of New Testament Gospels is deeply rooted in the Greco–Roman world and as such paints the background of the Jesus' actions and messages. Several scholarly publications that analyze biblical texts from the social science perspective have established a relationship between the politics and religion of the ancient world. The aim of this paper is to assess the events of demon possession and exorcism narrated in the Bible not from a theological perspective but from sociopolitical standpoint. Drawing references from scholarly publications on Bible, this paper would investigate the symbolic meanings of Jesus' exorcism in socio–political sphere of Galilee and Judea at the very beginning of the first–century. This paper heavily relies upon the concepts proposed by Amanda Witmer in her publication Jesus, the Galilean Exorcist, His Exorcisms in Social and Political Context. Making note of this distinction is important because if we look at the literal meaning of the translation of the word used in verses 2, and 3 we get a clearer picture of the condition of the demon possessed man. The first word that is used to describe the tomb emphasizes the fact that the man lived among the dead . I find this linguistic point interesting because it is an instance where our English language is not adequate to describe what the author was trying to convey in his text. When we look at the underlying meaning of the two separate words, and gain a deeper understanding of the underlying meaning of the first we get a more powerful picture of the circumstances that this demon possessed man was in. Aside from living among the tombs the man also suffered in other ways due to his demon possession. One example of this is 5:5 "Night and day among the tombs and on the mountain he was always howling and bruising himself with stones." If mental illness and demonic possession are not simply different names for the same thing, then we are left with two possibilities. Either they are unrelated phenomena, or there is some kind of association between them. Of course, even if they are unrelated, they may still be confused with each other because of superficial similarities. The exorcists who do the act of removing demons are typically Catholic priests. An exorcism is the process of driving out demons, associated with primitive Roman Catholic beliefs. Though the idea of exorcisms are mainly related to Roman Catholics, there is documentation of Jesus Christ performing an exorcism in the Holy Bible. This is a much older concept that is not widely believed the way it was in earlier society. Within the proposal of the Tar Heel Family Resort development plan, there is no indication that the development would be for public use. The only broad stroke benefit it may apply to the public is the creation of jobs, which, if the judge uses a broad visionary approach to the concept of eminent domain, the resort may succeed. In Africa, this kind of thing happens on the daily and it's a lot more terrifying than what is shown on t.v. or in the movies. Demons, the process of exorcisms, and Michael Taylor are very "real" and very scary. What are demons? Demons are creatures or evil spirits sent from hell to terrorize and "undo" mankind. Demons are sent here to raise heck for us, trying to get us to rip ourselves apart. They possess for a few... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Michael Taylor didn't have a very religious life. He believed in God, but he didn't follow. He had a wife, Christine, two children, and a poodle. One day, Christine told him that he should go to this bible study group and start learning more about Jesus and God. He agreed and started to attend. As time went on, he became more and more involved with the group to the point where he was spending more time with them than his family. Christine later figured out that he was having an affair with the leader of the group. He had been becoming more aggressive and unlike himself, causing worry to his wife and everyone around him. Later on, Christine confronted him about it and he then started to talk in a very deep voice and started growling animalistically. She started screaming at him in tongues and he screamed back at her in tongues. According to her, he had a very wild look in her eyes and she felt very threatened. She started screaming "Jesus" over and over again, which she later on said saved her life. They took him to the church where priests started the exorcism. It lasted for several hours and the priests were exhausted so they told him to go home, but they needed to be back early the next morning because although they expelled 40 demons, three remained: Murder, violence, and insanity. A witness told the priests that she heard a voice telling her that he was going to kill her and that they needed to finish it. But ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Witchcraft And Demonic Possession: The Genre Of Horror For many years the genre of horror has provided entertainment to audiences through horrifying gore, monsters, violence, and the supernatural. The most frightening type of horror is demonic possession, which is why it forms such a fascination. It creates extreme suspense, curiosity, and relevance. Through the formalist and psychoanalytical approach in the film Annabelle directed by John R. Leonetti, the article "The Horrors of Witchcraft and Demonic Possession" by Brian P. Levack, and the short story "Devils Movie", it is evident as to why individuals are so fascinated with the demonic side of horror. The film Annabelle, which is a movie filled with suspense, is about a demonic entity that takes over the doll Annabelle and later on is a threat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her id is used when she wants the doll, it is her desire, and she is extremely excited when her husband gets it for her. Later on, as the movie continues and the doll starts being possessed by a demonic entity, Mia thinks she is going crazy, since the harm is at times only happening to her. Her husband tries to convince her that it is not real, but she does not know what to believe. Mia is home alone and sees the women from the satanic cult running towards her, she explains this to her husband and he tells her that it is probably just her manifestation from her anxiety (Annabelle). She struggles to tell the difference between reality and fantasy which leads her to believe she is even more insane. This also causes the audience to feel sympathy for her since she feels alone and has to handle the problems alone. The audience continues to have hope for something good to happen and get rid of the demon entity. When the demon entity is destroyed within the doll, the audience feels relieved and happy for the characters. This is a reason as to why individuals are fascinated with the demonic side of horror, since they always know that good will win, and the evil will be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. The Exorcist By William Peter Blatty In William Peter Blatty's novel, The Exorcist, a thirteen year old girl becomes ill. The mother, Chris MacNeil, believes that her daughter is possessed by a demon after doctors are unable to diagnose the child. Mrs. MacNeil seeks help from Father Karras after the doctors tell her to go to a priest. Father Karras, a priest and psychiatrist, declined the idea of performing an exorcism on the girl after Mrs. MacNeil asked him for the favor. Father Karras tried to reason with Mrs. MacNeil that the girl, Regan MacNeil, was likely to have a mental illness. Father Karras finally agreed to perform the exorcism after he was unable to diagnose Regan. In his novel, The Exorcist, William Peter Blatty argues that religion is the antidote to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Besides the doctors who tried diagnosing Regan, Father Karras suggested that Regan had split personality and tried to explain it to Chris: The human brain contains, say, seventeen billion cells... we see that they handle approximately a hundred million messages per second; that's the number of sensations bombarding your body. They not only integrate all of these messages, but they do it efficiently... Now imagine that the human body is a massive ocean liner... all of your brain cells are the crew... Now the captain is you, it's your waking consciousness. And what happens in dual personality is that one of those crew cells down below deck comes up on the bridge and takes over command. In other words, mutiny. (Blatty 240) Father Karras suggests that Regan has multiple personalities rather than being possessed because he believes that an exorcism is not the solution for what Regan is experiencing. Chris is told that her daughter is not possessed, but she is sick. In order to find the correct illness, Chris took Regan to multiple doctors so that they could properly diagnose her. The first doctor that Regan went to gave her an electroencephalograph, or an EEG, which shows the doctors the pattern of her brain waves and would indicate abnormal functioning of the brain (Blatty 108). With the test being done on Regan, the doctor hoped to find symptoms that could match an illness. As a result, the EEG showed that Regan did not have abnormal functioning due ... • 34. Alastair Pennycook's: The Meaning Of Authorship Fading authorship and what leads to its demise For a long period of time, there has not been any crime that is as severe as plagiarism in either the literary field or the academic realm. Ostensibly, modern people have made considerable effort in avoiding plagiarism, punishing plagiarists, protecting intellectual rights and maintaining textual authorship. Alastair Pennycook, as a linguist who specializes in English language, showed that plagiarism would put writers' authorship at stake. In this essay I will argue that, notwithstanding the earnest ethical endeavor people have made, there is an irreversible trend in the fading of the authorship from the aspects of postmodern actualities, power relations in society, and the essence of language... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pennycook concluded his essay by reemphasizing that "all language learning is to some extent a process of borrowing others' words" (227). Indeed, we seldom create new words on our own. What we write and say is a borrowing of words since the first day we began to learn this language. It is impossible for any language learner to pick up one language without repeating or memorizing others' words. When Pennycook constantly used the word "borrow" in his essay, he had acknowledged that those who used those words do not actually possess the words, rather they need to "borrow" the words from elsewhere. He unconsciously denied the authorship due to the essence of the language learning as a massive textual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. The Message For Original Audience Message for Original Audience/Contemporary Audience: Original Audience: How did Jesus/Mark want to transform the audience? Summarize: What is the starting state of the implied audience? What is the new state to which they should move? What strategies does Jesus/Mark use to move them from starting state to end state? Mark presents a confrontation between Jesus and the evil spirits that controlled the man. Mark impressed the audience of the horrible situation the man was in as described in 5:3 using ОїбЅђОґбЅІ (not even) бјЃО»ПЌПѓОµО№ (anymore) ОїбЅђОґОµбЅ¶П‚ (no one). The evil spirits were a legion and they attempted to resist exorcism but fail. They went into the pigs and went into the sea. People in the town were afraid of the scene and saw the man restored back to his right mind. They had no idea about Jesus and how this could happen. The name of Jesus was spread in the Decapolis through the healed demon–possessed man and people were amazed. People should know that Jesus is not the only the Messiah of the Jewish people but also the savior of the Gentiles. He has authority over the evil spirits. Mark is using this confrontation to show that Jesus is the Son of God and has authority over the evil spirits. The healed man is a good testimony and he is the one spreading the good news about Jesus. Message for Contemporary Audience: What is the message of our passage for a contemporary audience? • 37. Finding Deep Meaning Of Film Finding Deep Meaning in Film As was demonstrated in my analysis of Uys' (1980) film, the techniques used for biblical interpretation may be used not merely for biblical interpretation or as a means to read literature as an example of the modern parable. These techniques may also be used to the interpretation of film as a medium of communication. Rosenberg, Lucchesi, Boardman, Vinson, Flynn, and Derrickson's (2005), The exorcism of Emily Rose, provides a wonderful platform for examining these techniques as it is fraught with meaning, should the viewer take time to peel back the layers of the onion. Rosenberg et al. (2005) tells the story of the death of Emily Rose and the Catholic priest who is charged with the negligent homicide. On ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many theological themes that flow from the basic narrative if one takes time to consider them. Beyond the question of the cause of Emily's death, one finds themes that relate to faith and rational thought, the existence of God and demons, the relationship between faith and science, suffering and faith, compassion and pain, and submission to a higher authority. While I will not take the time to delve into each one of these themes independently, I will select a few that are the most critical to this author. The first theme that becomes apparent is an overt attack on religion. Early on in the film, we find a group of lawyers talking about who will prosecute the case. It is stated that, "We need a Christian on this, preferably a Catholic. Someone who knows this stuff inside and out, and who the public will see as unbiased. We're going after a holy man here" (Rosenberg et al, 2005). It was not merely about identifying a prosecutor who was capable, but one who took attack the faith and discredit the exorcism rite. The courtroom attacks on Father Moore continue in this vain claiming that his views were based upon, "archaic and irrational superstition" (Rosenberg et al, 2005). The Christian faith is depicted as the product of fiction; because it cannot be rationalized. A second theme that flows from the film is the question of the existence of God and demons. • 39. The Biblical Warning Of God We all have that concept of evil. Each religion has that dark figure that beckons enticingly to pull us from the path of whatever deity we've devoted ourselves to. Lucifer for the Judeo–Christians, Iblees for the Muslims, Mara for the Buddhists; whatever one calls it, there is evil that looks to sway people from their path of faith. So of course we as people, feel the need to set up defenses to prevent such a thing. The biblical warning that "Your adversary the Devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour" (1 Peter 5:8) made the Devil an even more horrifying. The concept of demonic possession is something that's existed for an unclear amount of time.
