2. What is Universal Design for Learning?
It is a set of principles that educators can use to create
more engaging lesson plans to meet the needs of
diverse learners.
With more research being done on different learning
disabilities and handicaps, teachers need to be
equipped to teach these students within their inclusive
classrooms.
There are 3 principles of UDL
3. 1. Providing Multiple Means of
Representation
Everyone learns differently
Visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners
Students learn content through different methods
that best fit their learning needs.
These children could learn to
build a plane through reading,
watching a video, hearing
someone, or by trail and error.
They all learn to build the plane,
but in the way that fits their
learning needs best
4. 2. Provide Multiple Means of
Action and Expression
Students are given different assignments
Students could be learning about plot. Their
choice of projects could be to create and act
out a play, write a story, create a visual drawing
of plot in a story and so on.
5. 3. Provide Multiple Means of
Engagement
Students can learn on their own or with others
Students can learn through inquiry, problem
solving, and so on.
Students need to be engaged in their learning in
order to reach their fullest potential. The “One
size fits all” teaching methods of today with a
large emphases on standardized tests will not
meet the needs of all students.
