2. This is the opening scene, when the two people (including the
star) emerge from the plane wreckage. This particular screen
shot of the video shows a mid shot of the star (Katy Perry) in
order to show her clothing, which is ripped and dirty which
emphasises the fact that she is an explorer that has just come
out of a plane crash. The background has also been blurred in
order to make the star clearer and in the centre of the whole
scene. Her facial expression and gesture also adds emphasis
to this as she looks shocked and afraid This links to Andrew
Goodwin’s theory of there being constant close ups and shots
of the star. This scene also links to one of Goodwin’s theories
of ‘sound and vision’ which is when the lyrics match the video.
At the start, the lyrics are negative (‘I used to bite my tongue
and hold my breath’) and as this scene shows, she is in a
negative situation. There is also a long shot of the man in the
back ground, to show the viewer his explorer clothing,
however his gesture and stance are the opposite to Katy's
reaction and it also creates contrast to this situation as he
doesn’t seem shocked or afraid at all.
This is an over the shoulder shot that shows her
making a weapon out of her shoe. This shot also
shows her clothing which ripped and dirty and
indicates to the audience, she is perhaps tired and
afraid.
Her surroundings are bright and inviting yet due to her
clothing and the fact she is making a weapon, creates
contrast as this indicates that she is in a dangerous
place. This also links to Goodwin’s theory of ‘sound
and vison’ as the lyrics in this scene say how she is
getting stronger (‘now I'm floating like a butterfly,
stinging like bee’), because she is building a weapon
in the video, this matches the positive feel of the
lyrics.
3. This is a close up of the star, that shows her
showering. This allows the audience to see her
facial expression which is now calm, this suggests
to the audience that she has gotten used to the
environment and now links to the lyrics of the song,
which is a positive. This links to Andrew Goodwin’s
theory of ‘sound and vision’ where the lyrics match
the video (the lyrics are positive and the she scene
is now positive). This also links to the Mulvy’s Male
Gaze theory, as in this scene she is nude and is in
a seductive position, which is used to attract the
opposite sex.
This is a wide shot of the star that shows the full
length of the star, showing mise-en-scene, and her
clothing. This shot shows how her clothing
matches her surroundings and how she has
become a part of the jungle and how she in the
shot she blends in, however she wears vibrant
colours to make sure she still stands out. This shot
also makes her Katy look powerful and in charge,
resulting in the audience to automatically look at
her.
4. This is a wide shot that shows Katy sitting on a jungle
throne. This shot allows the audience to see her
surroundings of vibrant colours and different shades of
green which bring out the fact that she is in the jungle.
The flowers springing out from her help her to jump out
to the audience helping her again to me the main image
of this shot. This also indicates that she is now the
‘queen of the jungle’. There are bits of the plane in the
shot and the hat of the other explorer in the lower corner
of the shot which shows she has conquered the plane
crash and are only a small part of her life now. Her facial
expression shows she is happy and confident also her
stance with one foot up further emphasises the power
she has in that jungle.
This is a close up of a tiger which is wearing a
colour that says ‘Katy purry’. This suggests to
the audience that this tiger is now owned by
Katy which further emphasises her power. In
contrast the tiger still looks dangerous and
strong however this again makes Katy look
even more dominant as she is able to ‘tame ‘
this powerful tiger.
