2. WHAT IS A DYNASTY ?
• The word dynasty means, quite simply, a
succession of rulers from the same family.
Beginning with the Bronze Age Shang
dynasty, historical eras in China have borne
the name of the family or clan that
dominated during that period. Some
dynasties, such as the Chou and the Ming,
lasted for centuries.
4. SHANG VS. QIN
During the Shang Dynasty the Chinese domesticated the
horse. An important achievement of the Shang was the
development of the chariot. The chariot was an
important weapon used in battle enabling soldiers to
move long distances quickly. The earliest known
mathematics dates back to the Shang Dynasty.
The Shang dynasty lasted more than the Qin dynasty.
Achievements. The main achievement
of the Qin is the fact that it unified
China, creating the first dynasty ruled
by the first emperor Qin Shi Huang.
Other well-known achievements is the
creation of the Great Wall and a large
army of Terracotta Warriors.
5. ZHOU VS. HAN
The Zhou Dynasty, which existed around
1046 to 256 BCE, was the second Chinese
dynasty and one of the most influential eras
in Chinese history, that followed the Shang
Dynasty, the first Chinese dynasty. ... The
Zhou emperors promoted the concept of the
Mandate of Heaven, the divine and morally
sustained right to rule.
The achievements of the Han dynasty (206 BCE
- 220 CE), often regarded by scholars and the
ancient Chinese themselves as the golden era of
Chinese culture, would have lasting effects on
all who followed, particularly in the areas of
government, law, philosophy, history, and art.
The thirst for new knowledge, ambitious
experimentation, and unstinting intellectual
enquiry are hallmarks of Han culture, and they
helped, amongst other achievements, to develop
the Silk Road trade network, invent new
materials such as paper and glazed pottery,
formulate history writing, and greatly improve
agricultural tools, techniques, and yields.
6. LEIZU
• Leizu, also known as Xi Lingshi, was a legendary Chinese empress and
wife of the Yellow Emperor. According to tradition, she discovered
sericulture, and invented the silk loom, in the 27th century BC.

• Silk road was important because one of the major products traded was from
China.
