2. INTRODUCTION.
• He was born near Lucknow in the small town of Rai Bareli in
1786.His father passed away whilst he was young and in 1806 he
traveled to Delhi and enrolled in the Madrassa Rahimiya. He
learned Quran and Hadith for two years under the knowledge of
shah Wali Ullah sons.He was more a man of action than scholar.He
joined the forces of Amir Khan
• in 1810.In that era Syed Ahmad learned how to use modern
European Weapon.He was given command of a group of soldiers
due to his abilities.His piety made him responsible for leading
troops in prayer.He returned to Delhi in 1817
3. INTRODUCTION.
• He went to Arabia in 1821 and returned in 1823, where he got
knowledge of religion Islam under Sheikh Abdul wahab. His work
became important in trying to resumption of Islam to its original
values.
4. Beliefs of syed Ahmad Shaheed Barailvi.
• He was not only man of action but also was an ideal person to act
as a leader to work against power of British in India.He tried to
ensure that Muslims were ruled by fellow Muslims. He clearly
believed that the freedom of Muslims could only come as a result
of armed quest against the foreign and non-Muslim forces which
were oppressing them.
• He believed that there was was a dire need to end the evils that
had corrupted the Islamic society.He served as an army officer, he
surrounded himself with men of great piety who were prepared to
reject worldly wealth and work for improving the moral and
intellectual lives of Muslims.
5. Beliefs of syed Ahmad Shaheed Barailvi.
• British had cleared on Mughals that the Mughals had little power
and Sikhs were dominated in the Punjab.He laid the founded of
Jihad movement, which he called armed struggle to overthrow
non-Muslim oppression and restore Muslim power.He believed that
once this was done, Islam could be revitalized and rescued from
believes and customs contrary to Islamic beliefs which had
entered into every individual life.
6. Working of Syed Ahmad shaheed Barailvi.
• He went for Hajj in 1821; before going he traveled across India
and convened meeting in order to spread the message of Jihad.He
returned from Arabia in 1823 and was ready to take action.
• At that time, Punjab was under the control of Sikh government of
Raja Ranjit Singh. Ranjit had extended his authority into the North
West Frontier.Muslims were suffering under Sikh rule because they
were not able to carry out many of their religious practices.At
some places call to prayer was banned for Muslims.This was not
bearable for Syed Ahmad and decided to launch Jihad against the
non-Muslims in the Punjab.
7. Working of Syed Ahmad shaheed Barailvi.
• He toured the Punjab and North West Frontier to enlist men to
fight against the Sikh rule.He traveled many hundreds of miles to
raise a Mujaheddin force.He visited Rajasthan,Sindh,Baluchistan
and entered into the Afghanistan.
• He established his headquarter near Peshawar in 1826.He sent a
message to Ranjit Singh allow the Religious freedom for Muslims
otherwise ready to face the Mujaheddin.He turned down the
proposal of Syed Ahmad Shaheed. Syed Ahmad was forced to
attack first at Okara on 21 December 1826, and then shortly
afterwards at Hazrothe; the Sikhs suffered defeat.
8. Working of Syed Ahmad shaheed Barailvi.
• This victory made him a successful leader and encouraged other
tribes to join the Mujaheddin force.Soon the army number crossed
the 80,000.Sikhs tried to call his army an un-Islamic to create
differences.They claimed that by following the teachings of shah
Wali Ullah, Syed Ahmad’s forces were not true Muslims.
• In 1827, they agreed unanimously that Syed Ahmad should assume
the authority of an Imam.He united the Muslims.
9. Working of Syed Ahmad shaheed Barailvi.
• Sikhs was preparing to attack the fort of Attock when he encountered an
army of 35,000 Sikhs near Okara. A pathan chief Yar Muhammad was
bribed against Syed Ahmad.First one of his servants tried to poison Syed
Ahmad, then Yar Muhammad Khan deserted the battlefield along with his
men thus creating confusion and chaos in the ranks which finally led to
the defeat of Syed Ahmad’s forces.He moved his headquarter to the
reasons of safety of Panjtrar near Kashmir.
• Later,Yar Muhammad was killed in battle against the Mujaheddin,his
brother Sultan Muhammad Khan also waged war against Syed Ahmad.This
constant campaign against Syed Ahmad forced to move his forces to
Balakot.
10. Working of Syed Ahmad shaheed Barailvi.
• He wanted freedom of Kashmir and Hazara. Balakot was thought
safe because it was covered on three sides by Mountains.Enemy
made a surprise attack on the forces of syed Ahmad.
• The battle of Balakot was a fiercely contested one.Mujaheddin
fought bravely but Sikh Army was in large number and
Mujaheddins were unable to resist the Sikhs.Nearly six hundred
Mujaheddin soldiers were killed in the battle. Syed Ahmad and his
commander Shah Ismail also killed. Syed Ahmad Saheed was buried
in Balakot.
11. Why Syed Ahmad shaheed was important?
• Mujaheddins were defeated in the battle of Balakot. This was a
big setback for the Jihad movement and it carried on struggle in
the following years.This agitation continued on in the hills of the
North West Frontier until 1863 until British sent a large army to
deal with the Mujaheddin threat.The deed of Syed Ahmad shaheed
had been important because of following ways.
• This was the first example in the history of India, a movement
came into being to free the Muslims from the brutality of non-
Muslims or foreign rulers.
12. Why Syed Ahmad shaheed was important?
• The fundamental aim behind this movement was to achieve religious and
spiritual freedom.
• The movement for Jihad was a uniting force for Muslims.The fact that they
were ready to die for their cause was an inspiration to all Muslims.
• Syed Ahmad Shaheed was an inspiration to all Muslims in defending their
religion, culture and freedom.Later, coming leaders followed Syed Ahmad
Shaheed as an example.They wanted to see a state which was based on the
principles of the Islam
