Question 3: What have you learnt from your audience feedbacks?
Unfortunately, we could not create a prezi presentation for this area of our evaluation as one student in the other classes lost the tape on which we had recorded our audience feedback, so this is a big loss to this part of the evaluation but thankfully we have the rest of the audience research and feedback.
Maslow’s Hierarchy Firstly, to identify what target audience we were going to aim our products at we used Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to identify what our products would offer to the audience. Firstly, to identify what target audience we were going to aim our products at we used Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to identify what our products would offer to the audience. Maslow's hierarchy of needs helped us quite a bit with our research as it enabled us to see what needs were being met by consumers when being given our products (video, digipack etc.). The feedback was interesting because it showed that 4 out of the 5 needs were being met, safety, love/belonging, esteem and self actualization. This was the type of feedback we intended to receive back but it was far better than we hoped for. Because the questions that were asked in the questionnaire were closely linked to answers we were looking for from Maslow's hierarchy of needs, we already had an idea of what answers and feedback we were expecting to look for as we researched how our products influenced ourselves, and how we saw them as part of the audiences view.
A.I.D.AWe also used AIDA as part of our research to further inquire about how our products affected the target audience. We decided that our target audience was going to be a niche target market because of the specific genre of the music. The Attention of the audience was firmly attracted by the digipack and the magazine advertisement firstly because the digipack was seen as eye catching because of the use of fonts and especially background pictures and shots that were used. The magazine advert stood out to the audience and the feedback we got back was that it stood out because of the contrasting black and white colours but also because of the way the shapes had been arranged to create a ‘1’ shape. The audience were then further Interested by the digipack and magazine, but also the music video as there is a kind of narrative hook right at the beginning of the video when the main protagonist is hit by a car, and this keeps the audience interested. From the feedback we received, majority of the audience also felt that they wanted to be secondary character which was the artist, and so had a Desire to be him and do the actions that he was doing, e.g. Puppeteer and mind and body control etc. The action that the audience reacted to when they saw the music video and ancillary task and digipack was that nearly all of the audience said that they would buy the album, and they went further on to say that they wouldn't mind watching the music video over and over again on a music channel. From this type of feedback we received we were ecstatic about what the audience thought of our music project, and we thought we had received very good feedback except for a few anomalies, which will be explained further on.
Demographic profiling ( GRASS)For our niche target audience we decided that with the help of G.R.A.S.S, which enables society to be put into groups where the particular group share the same key ideas, beliefs and values. The gender that we decided would be suitable for our music project would be both males and females as the electronica/ rnb/grime genre consists of both males and females, and is also enjoyed by both sexes as well so both males and females were targeted.Any race were also included into this because throughout our research we found out that there are a number of different artists from various backgrounds which gives the genre of music a great deal odehnic diversity, and so race was defined as open to all. Age however was put into the category of target age of around 16 – 25, because this genre of music is quite new and appeals mostly to teenagers and young adults. For our target audience, the socio economic status that we targeted our products to were the skilled working class, lower working class and subsidence (band C2-E).
Questionnaire feedback This is a copy of the questionnaire that was handed out to the target audience who viewed our music video, digipack and magazine advertisement. After the audience viewed our music video and both pieces of print work, the questionnaire feedback that we received was quite good compared to what we thought we would actually get. Overall, the feedback was quite good as everyone in the target audience complimented our groups skills in producing the music video, but also for the digipack and ancillary task. They also felt that the contrasting colours between the music video and the magazine advert worked well together. However, the negative feedback was that the digipack looked good with good editing and background shots and they were very creative and imaginative, but because both the video and the magazine advert had contrasting black and white colours used in them, the album cover didn't fit in with these two other pieces, and so looked out of place when put together with the music video and magazine advert. Also, a few people mentioned that in the music video there were quite too many black and white flashes to and from scene to scene.
Conclusion After carrying out extensive audience research, music genre research and target market research, we have learnt that from our audience feedback, we produced very good pieces of coursework for our A2 media project which looked fantastic, but because of the anomaly which was the digipack, we learnt from this that no matter how well production of media texts is going, there is no margin for error or lapse in concentration because this will affect the whole project completely as it will be clearly visible where and when the differences are in the work produced. So overall in conclusion, I think that the work that our group had produced was to a top high quality standard which impressed the teaching staff and technicians, but because of the great compliments that we received from staff, we ‘stepped off the gas’ if you like, and just felt as if we could relax for a little while as all work was going well. However this was our downfall and could be the reason why maybe some marks could be lost for our coursework because of one little simple error, which was a lapse in concentration which lead to the simplest of mistakes but went unnoticed. On the other hand the digipack that was produced also received various compliments from staff and other students in other groups but the negative feedback that was received was entirely negative, but ‘ if the digipack had the same font and colour scheme as the video and magazine ad, then it would have all fitted well together’ – Polly and jillOur group is very proud of what we have produced and this is the first time that any project like this was given to us, and we knew that it would be a hard task for us to complete in minimal time, but the standard and quality that the work was produced at gave us both self belief and confidence that we could finish this task, and after feedback was brought in from the target audience and we both read what people had to say about our media project, we felt proud and good about the work we had produced, but a bit of self pity and anger also crept into us; where we should have kept our concentration and provided no means for any excuses or criticisms of our project.
