15. WHAT IS IT, AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
VISUAL DATA DISCOVERY

17. • Charts & Graphs?
– Well, that’s a start. We’ve had the ability to present
information graphically for decades, so what’s the big deal?
• Visualization gives meaning to the data, allowing humans
to more quickly and effectively glean insight from the
information
• This makes the data more valuable, increasing time to
decision
• As the availability and volume of data grow, so does the
demand on knowledge workers to assemble, interpret,
and deliver that information in a meaningful way, SO…
• How should we do it???
VISUAL DATA DISCOVERY
18. • Delivering more information in traditional formats will
overwhelm decision makers
– Granular detail is typically not a useful way to gain insight
into key performance indicators
– Massive amounts of tabular data do not tell a story, analysts
are saturated with numbers while lacking an understanding
of their impact
• Well-designed visual representations of the same
information can trigger a visceral response that drives us
to ACT!
• So, how do we get to the right level of Visualization
versus traditional Charts & Graphs?
VISUAL DATA DISCOVERY VS. TRADITIONAL REPORTING
19. • Leverage modern display families:
– Tree Maps, Heat Maps, Network Diagrams, Waterfall, Bullet
Charts, Tag Cloud, Box Plot
• Make the displays Interactive
– Ability to slice and dice data by one or more additional
dimension, or attribute, should be built-in and intuitive
– Ability to drill-down to detail
– Some level of Filtering and Calculating should be embedded
• Integrate Visualization across all levels of users
– Dashboards for Consumers
– Self-service Authoring for Analysts
– Professional Authoring for BI Professionals
VISUAL DATA DISCOVERY VS. TRADITIONAL CHARTS
20. 1. Purpose
– This is the specification for your entire effort. It defines what success
means and how to get there, usually in the form of what knowledge you
are trying to communicate.
2. Content
– The data and relationships that are represented in your visualization.
3. Structure
– The physical layout of your visualization. It may be a line graph,
scatterplot, entity relationship diagram, histogram, map, or any other
spatial representation of your content. The appropriate structure is
informed by your purpose, and by the content you’ve selected to convey
this knowledge.
4. Formatting
– All of the other visual treatments that go into your visualization. This
includes both non-spatial visual encodings of the data (size, shape, color,
texture, arrows, boxes, etc.), and all of the supporting labels, axes, grid
lines, highlights, notes, etc.
