11. Introduction to Global Mindsets
What is a Global Mindset – The Academic Perspective
Holden (2016) defines a Global Mindset as a set of individual attributes. A Global Mindset
profile comprises three capitals according to
Javidan & Teagarden (2011):
“Intellectual Capital, which refers to one’s global savvy,
cosmopolitan outlook and cognitive complexity” (Javidan &
Teagarden 2011)
“Psychological Capital, which refers to one’s
passion for diversity, quest for adventure, and
self-assurance.” (Javidan & Teagarden, 2011)
“Social Capital, which refers to one’s intercultural
empathy, interpersonal impact, and diplomacy ”
((Javidan & Teagarden, 2011)

12. Introduction to Global Mindsets
What is a Global Mindset – A Leadership Perspective
• They are able to interpret and decode situations from multiple, even competing,
points of view (HBR, 2012).
• They have an insatiable interest to learn about other cultures (HBR, 2012).
• They care to understand other people’s perspectives and suspend their judgment
to do so (HBR, 2012).
“Leaders with a global mindset nurture relationships with associates and
friends around the world and have a unique ability to transcend cultural
barriers and cultivate trust.” Harvard Business Review (2012)
“Leaders with a global mindset are knowledgeable about economic and political
issues around the world and can grasp the inherent complexity of international
affairs from multiple national perspectives (HBR, 2012)
13. Introduction to Global Mindsets
What is Global Mindset – A Health and Social Care Perspective
“There is urgent need to develop nurse leaders who have a global mindset and who can advance
nursing scholarship and health policies worldwide.” (Kim, 2005)
“A global mindset should be coupled with efforts to master the interplay of complexities
between the culture of nursing and the business of nursing.” (Kim, 2005)
“Developing global nurse leaders may begin to develop a global mindset by undoing
unproductive old habits and norms, and enveloping or growing our global knowledge and skills.”
(Kim, 2005)
“As the next generation works, travels, and lives with a global mindset unlike
any generation before them, they will start to see health and well-being as
common values shared by all people and realized by all people working
together.” (World Bank, 2016)
What does having a Global Mindset in the health and social care mean?
14. Introduction to Global Mindsets
What is a Global Mindset – An Industry Perspective
“Modern businesses need a workforce that is able to communicate, influence and build
connections with people from all over the world. Although language skills are a key part,
a global mindset extends well beyond this, into understanding subtle cultural differences,
having a more open and flexible approach, and knowing how to deal with an international
environment.”

27. Top 10 Global Trends
Top 10 Global Trends on the World Economic
Forum’s Global Agenda Series include:
28. Top 10 Global Trends
Global Trend 1: Deepening income inequality
“In developed and developing countries
alike, the poorest half of the population
often controls less than 10% of its wealth.
This is a universal challenge that the whole
world must address.” (WEF, 2015)
29. Top 10 Global Trends
Global Trend 2: Persistent jobless growth
“The term ‘persistent jobless growth’ refers
to the phenomenon in which economies
exiting recessions demonstrate economic
growth while merely maintaining – or, in
some cases, decreasing – their level of
employment.” (WEF, 2015)
30. Top 10 Global Trends
Global Trend 3: Lack of leadership
86% of respondents to the Survey on
the Global Agenda agree that we have
a leadership crisis in the world today…
(WEF, 2015)
31. Top 10 Global Trends
Global Trend 4: Rising geostrategic competition
“Today’s renewed competition between
key actors is a concern. While the old
Cold War is not making a resurgence,
recent developments have led to
tectonic shifts in state interaction.” (WEF,
2015)
32. Top 10 Global Trends
Global Trend 5: The weakening of representative democracy
“Since the global economy crashed in
2008, there has been an erosion of trust
in political institutions and processes.
Citizens now place more faith in
companies than in their own leaders.”
(WEF, 2015)
33. Top 10 Global Trends
Global Trend 6: Rising pollution in the developing world
“The industrialisation of the
developing world is creating
unsustainable pollution levels. The
solution requires a technological and
an intellectual revolution”
(WEF, 2015)
34. Top 10 Global Trends
Global Trend 7: Increasing occurrence of severe weather events
“Extreme weather events are a major
consequence of climate change, and are
becoming more frequent, powerful and
erratic. What is needed is not just relief
when disaster strikes, but adaptation to the
massive effects these phenomena produce.”
(WEF, 2015)
35. Top 10 Global Trends
Global Trend 8: Intensifying nationalism
“For just as in the years of the Industrial
Revolution people turned to political
nationalism to protect and shelter their
communities against the uneven and
inequitable patterns of growth…” (WEF, 2015)
36. Top 10 Global Trends
Global Trend 9: Increasing water stress
“Due to a combination of problems,
including rapid population growth,
constrained water supplies and high
levels of poverty, countries such as
India, Indonesia, Bangladesh and
Nigeria will be hit the hardest by this
trend.” (WEF, 2015)
37. Top 10 Global Trends
Global Trend 10: Growing importance of health in the economy
“Health presents a challenge for all
nations; in a study by the Pew
Research Center, a median of 85%
of respondents believe it was a
problem in their country.”(WEF, 2015)

The Outlook on the Global Agenda Series produced by the World Economic Forum features the Top 10 trends and challenges facing the world’s regions
We face a number of diverse and significant challenges: growing income inequality, heightened geo-strategic tensions, the unsustainable use of our planet’s natural resources and, of course, the climate crisis and more…
The world not only feels different. The data tell us it is different. Based on years of research by the directors of the McKinsey Global Institute, No Ordinary Disruption: The Four Forces Breaking All the Trends is a timely and important analysis of how we need to reset our intuition as a result of four forces colliding and transforming the global economy: the rise of emerging markets, the accelerating impact of technology on the natural forces of market competition, an aging world population, and accelerating flows of trade, capital, people, and data.

A startling 86% of respondents to the Survey on the Global Agenda agree that we have a leadership crisis in the world today. Why would they say this? Perhaps because the international community has largely failed to address any major global issue in recent years.
