2. Essential Questions:
Can you think about why you think it is important
to learn about the number system?
How is it important in our lives?
(students will be given 2 minutes to think about their responses before being
asked to share their response with their partner, and then to the whole class)
3. What is the number system?
• Writing system for expressing and representing numbers of a
given set.
• Helps us understand the relationship between numbers.
(have a student read aloud the definition)
4. Real Numbers
• Written with a decimal point
• It includes a set of real numbers
such as natural, whole, integers,
rational and irrational numbers
• 2 kinds: rational and irrational
numbers
• Ex: -5 , 4/3, √2
(video clip)
6. Whole Numbers
• All positive numbers that are counting numbers
including zero. (natural numbers+0)
• Ex: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…
• Clarification Question: In comparison to the natural
numbers, what number do I start with when dealing with
whole numbers that sets them apart?
7. • Integers are rational
numbers because they
can be written as
fraction with 1 as the
denominator.
• Positive, negative
numbers on a number
line, including zero “0”
• No fractions
Ex. 10, -6, 8, 4
(musical clips)
Integers
8. In reference to the previous slide
about integers, can you hypothesize
why integers are over 1, and not 0 ?
9. Rational Numbers
• real number that can
be written as a ratio
(fraction) of two
integers.
• written in decimal
form is terminating
(ends) or repeating
(same pattern of
numbers).
• terminating: to end,
“terminar” in Spanish
Examples:
•-10
•1.555…
•4.25
•1/4
10. Now that we know what rational numbers are, what do
you assume irrational (not rational) numbers are then?
How did you reach that conclusion?
Can you provide an example of what you think an
irrational number is then?
11. Irrational Numbers
• a number that
CANNOT be written
as a ratio (fraction) of
two integers.
• written as decimals
are non-terminating
(do NOT end) and
non-repeating (no
pattern)
Examples:
•Non-perfect
square roots
√19
•1.58962…
13. Classify the following Numbers:
EX. 1 ) 5
Answer: natural, whole, integer, rational, real
EX. 2) -12
Answer: integer, rational, real
EX. 3) Π (pi)
Answer: irrational, real
