Superstitions around the world
Superstition is a form of belief in supernatural
events that are the cause of other events. They are
closely connected with omen, religion, astrology
and culture.
Friday the 13th
In western cultures many
people believe that
Friday the 13th is a day
that brings bad luck and
ill fortune. People avoid

any important meetings or plans on this
day. However, in asian cultures there is no such
supersitition. In Japan, for example, number 4
is pronounced as both ‘Shi‘ and ‘Yon‘ where
‚Shi‘
means death. If you go to a Japanese hospital, you
will find that there is
no 4th Floor there.
Horseshoe
If you hang a horseshoe in
the bedroom, you will

never have nightmares.
The possible reason
for this superstition is
the number of holes in
the horseshoe which is
7.
Many people consider 7
a lucky number.

had many cats were
believed to be witches.
In Asia, however, this
superstition doesn‘t exist.
Four-leaf clover
People call this leaf a ‘lucky clover‘,or ‘lucky leaf.
If you find a four-leave clover, it will bring you
fortune and good luck. Each leaf represents
different things: hope, love, faith, and luck.
However, they are not easy to find.

Broken dishes
This supersitition has
many variations in
different European
countries.
In Denmark, for example, if
you put broken dishes near
your friend‘s doorstep on
New Year‘s Eve, you will
have a fortunate year. In the
Netherlands if you

In China, it is
considered a bad
luck omen if you
break cups, plates, or
any other tableware.
