4. Context Clues
Context clues are hints found within a
sentence, paragraph, or passage that a
reader can use to understand the
meanings of new or unfamiliar words.

6. FINDING THE MEANING OF UNFAMILIAR
WORDS USING DEFINITION
Definition is a statement of a
meaning of a word found in the
same sentence. It gives a brief
meaning of the difficult word. This is
is usually signaled by a comma (,), is
called, or, is, and are.
7. Look at the following examples:
1. A group of crows or ravens is collectively
called a murder.
2. Being in a prolonged state of ennui, or
intense boredom, can cause a lot of mental
distress.
3. A domain is a specific territory owned by
a ruler or government.
8. Murder, ennui, and domain may seem so
difficult. However, a word or words within these
sentences may give us some clues.
Let’s look at the first sentence. A group of
crows or ravens is collectively called a murder.
Analyze. Which words may signal the meaning
of the word murder?
Follow suit for the other two examples:
ď‚·ď€ ennui - state of intense boredom
ď‚·ď€ domain - specific territory owned by a ruler or
government

usually signaled by the following words:

Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, in books about Ancient
Greece.
2. There is a surprising variety of breeds of felines,

at bunches of circles due to my severe trypophobia.

sentences. You can read a lot about Greek deities, such as
