BADMINTON
THE AIM OF BADMINTON
Badminton is a raquet sport, which is played by two opposing players (singles) or
two opposing pairs (doubles). The main goal is try to score points by striking a
shuttlecock with their raquets so it passes over a net and lands in their opposing
court.
The shuttlecock can only be striked once before it passes over the net.
Competitive badminton is always played indoor because the wind can affect
shuttlecock flights; badminton outside is also played as a recreational activity.
Badminton demands excellent fitness: endurance, agility, strenght, and a good
coordination. Badminton is one of the fastest sports in the world. The shuttlecock
can reach a speed as high as more than 300 km/h. The top speed measured in
a professional tournament is 325km/h.
HISTORY OF BADMINTON
Badminton has been played since ancient times, however we can find a similar
local game in India, called “Poona”.
This game was taken back to England where the rules were set out. The new
sport was finally played at Badminton house, and during this time the game was
referred as “The game of Badminton”.
Little by little this game became more popular and nowadays badminton has been
extended all over the world.
Since 1992 badminton has been an Olympic sport and the best countries in
international competitions are China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Denmark.
Recently, the Spanish talent Carolina Marín has reached the number 1 in female
circuit.

Badminton courts are marked for singles and doubles. The doubles court are
wider but both are the same length. The court length is 13,4 mts and the court
wide is 6,1m.
The net is 1.55 mts high.
BASIC RULES
A. The player must not step on the service line.
B. When the serve is played the shuttlecock must be hit below waist height.
C. The serve must be hit in a diagonal direction towards the opposite side of
the court.
D. Even numbers are served from the right side, odd numbers are played
from the left.

E. In individual badminton the player has only one serve, but in doubles if the
first player fail the serve the second player has one more chance (second
serve).
F. The shuttlecock is allowed to hit the net and pass to the opposing side.
G. The shuttlecock must not hit any other piece of the indoor stadium.
H. Players are not permitted to contact any part of the net.
I. The shuttlecock cannot be hit more than once.
J. Each game lasts 21 points. A match is the best of three games.
BADMINTON BASIC SKILLS
Badminton offers a wide variety of basic strokes, all of them can be played
either forehand or backhand.
CLEAR: when you hit the shuttlecock from one backline to the other trying to
fix the opposing player on the backline.
LOB: when you try to hit the shuttlecock close to the net passing over the
opponent´s head.
DROP: When you try to land the shuttlecock close to the net of your opponent.

SMASH: this is the most powerful stroke whereby you use a power hit to land
the shuttlecock in the opponent´s court.
HIGH SERVE (FOREHAND): you try to move your opponent as far back in
court as possible. It is done with the forehand and underarm action.
It is More commonly used in singles.
LOW SERVE ( BACKHAND): Try to attract your opponent close to the net, it
is done with a backhand and underarm action.
It is more commonly used in doubles.
