Discussion Questions (from the podcast)
 What sorts of things do you
buy on impulse?
 What recent product or service
that you’ve seen do you think is
impressive?
 If you could start a business, or invent a
product or service, what would it be?
Conditionals Review
 To talk about some that is always or generally true,
use:
 If /When + S + present simple, S + present simple
 If I drink too much coffee, I can’t get to sleep.
 To talk about something that is likely to happen in
the future as a result of a possible action/situation,
use:
 If + S + present simple, S + will (won’t) + V
 If it rains this weekend, I’ll stay at Songdo.
 To talk about a present/future result of something
that is unreal, imaginary, or very unlikely to happen,
use:
 If + S + past simple, S + would(n’t) + V
 If I won the lottery, I would quit school and go travelling.
Conditionals Review
 Instead of using ‘if’, which other words can
you use:
 to mean ‘if not’
 unless
 to mean ‘if, and only if’
 providing, provided, on condition that, as long as (inf.)
 to show that the situation is unreal or very
unlikely
 supposing, suppose, imagine, let’s say (inf.)

 What do you generally do if your roommates are being too

 When you have a lot of homework, do you normally do it right

  • 2. Discussion Questions (from the podcast)  What sorts of things do you buy on impulse?  What recent product or service that you’ve seen do you think is impressive?  If you could start a business, or invent a product or service, what would it be?
  • 3. Conditionals Review  To talk about some that is always or generally true, use:  If /When + S + present simple, S + present simple  If I drink too much coffee, I can’t get to sleep.  To talk about something that is likely to happen in the future as a result of a possible action/situation, use:  If + S + present simple, S + will (won’t) + V  If it rains this weekend, I’ll stay at Songdo.  To talk about a present/future result of something that is unreal, imaginary, or very unlikely to happen, use:  If + S + past simple, S + would(n’t) + V  If I won the lottery, I would quit school and go travelling.
  • 4. Conditionals Review  Instead of using ‘if’, which other words can you use:  to mean ‘if not’  unless  to mean ‘if, and only if’  providing, provided, on condition that, as long as (inf.)  to show that the situation is unreal or very unlikely  supposing, suppose, imagine, let’s say (inf.)  p. 60 #5B - check
  • 5. Discuss  What do you generally do if your roommates are being too noisy? Why?  When you have a lot of homework, do you normally do it right away, or do you put it off until the last minute?  If the weather is nice this weekend, what will you do?  If you get really good grades this semester, what will your parents do/say?  Supposing you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live? Why?  If you could change one thing about your life right now, what would it be? Why?  Imagine you were the opposite sex for one day. How would things be different?  What would you do if you could do one thing to make the world a better place?
  • 6. genius  Do you ever watch reality TV or game shows? Why/why not?  What is your opinion of these types of shows? Why?  BBC had a comedy game show called “Genius”. What do you think the game involved?  p. 64, 1A & B – read and answer the questions  2A – discuss with a partner  2B – watch and check  2C – answer the questions  2D – discuss
  • 7.  What is your opinion of Dan’s idea? Do you think it is ‘genius’? Why/why not?  Do you think this kind of show would be popular in Korea? Why/why not?  If you could go on this show and submit an idea or invention, what would it be?  What do you think is the best invention in the last ten or twenty years? Why?  What do you think are some of the worst inventions over the last 100-200 years? Why?  Look at the list of “the world’s worst inventions” at the top of pages 56-57.  Do you agree? Why/why not?
