Past habits & states that have changed or stopped
 I lived in Saskatoon in the past. Now I live in Seoul.
 I used to live in Saskatoon. (+ past state that has changed)
 When I was young, I read books every day. Now I don’t have very
much time to read.
 I would read books every day. / I used to read books every day. (+ past
habit that has changed)
 I didn’t get along with my sisters when I was young – we fought all
the time. Now we get along really well.
 I didn’t use to get along with my sisters. / I never used to get along with
my sisters. (- past state that has changed)
 When I was young, I didn’t eat vegetables (except carrots ). Now I
love all vegetables!
 I wouldn’t eat vegetables. / I didn’t use to eat vegetables. / I never used
to eat vegetables. ( - past habit that has changed)
 I lived in Toronto for five years.
 *No change* – don’t use “used to” if you say the length of time or the
number of times

Note: to make a question, use “did…use to”, not “would”
e.g. Did you use to do taekwondo when you were young?
Which TV shows did you use to watch?
 What kind of job did you use to dream of doing? Why?
 Who did you use to admire when you were growing up?

 What did your favourite toy use to be?
 Do you still have it?
 How much time did you use to spend doing homework?
 Do you spend more or less time now?

  • 3. Past habits & states that have changed or stopped  I lived in Saskatoon in the past. Now I live in Seoul.  I used to live in Saskatoon. (+ past state that has changed)  When I was young, I read books every day. Now I don’t have very much time to read.  I would read books every day. / I used to read books every day. (+ past habit that has changed)  I didn’t get along with my sisters when I was young – we fought all the time. Now we get along really well.  I didn’t use to get along with my sisters. / I never used to get along with my sisters. (- past state that has changed)  When I was young, I didn’t eat vegetables (except carrots ). Now I love all vegetables!  I wouldn’t eat vegetables. / I didn’t use to eat vegetables. / I never used to eat vegetables. ( - past habit that has changed)  I lived in Toronto for five years.  *No change* – don’t use “used to” if you say the length of time or the number of times
  • 4. Check the Language bank 4.2 on page 134 for more information. Note: to make a question, use “did…use to”, not “would” e.g. Did you use to do taekwondo when you were young? Which TV shows did you use to watch?  What kind of job did you use to dream of doing? Why?  Who did you use to admire when you were growing up? Why?  What did your favourite toy use to be?  Do you still have it?  How much time did you use to spend doing homework?  Do you spend more or less time now?  What are some things your parents’ generation used to do that people don’t do any more? - Ask follow-up questions!
