This essay will show you why Captain Scott
was completely different to Shackleton.
I will address two subjects here between the two men. I will tell their story,
then their traits. After the two stories and traits, we will compare them. So
prepare to be teleported to Antarctica.
…Hmm, I need to fix up that teleporter, good
thing too because its cold in Antarctica.
No real matter, I’ll fix it up while you read the story of Shackleton and the
Endurance.Ahh, theTeleporter is fixed. Let us go to Antarctica.
Shackleton
The story.
Shackleton Pg. 1
Shackleton had received a letter asking him to go to the South Pole. He named his
ship the Endurance. Little did he know, that name (for the fatalists) would jinx the
whole trip. He reached south America and learned about the ice flows. Ignoring the
advice, Shackleton sailed right into the ice with not a care for the world.
About a week or two later however, the ship became trapped in ice. Shackleton could
not contact anyone, he could only save his men. About 2 days before abandoning
ship, the Endurance keeled over at about 45 degrees to the port (left) side. He said to
the crew “leave everything behind.” captainWorsley asked if he should give the order
to abandon ship. Shackleton said he should and the ship was abandoned. (continued
on next page)
Shackleton Pg. 2
He also said “we shall not surrender” meaning he will not give in to the ice.The English flag
was raised and the emergency light was left on. CaptainWorsley said it was like the ship
saying ‘farewell’ and giving them a signal she was still alive. The life boats were brought, 3 of
them. 9 people in two and 10 people in Shackleton's boat. They set up a camp and then the
breakup of the ship began. But before the whole ship sank, photos, and other objects were
recovered, nearly 6 hours later, the ship was crushed and it sank beneath the ice.The
Endurance did not endure. But the men did. After the ice broke up around their 6th night, a
crack appeared and one person fell into the ice. He was rescued but Shackleton said “we need
to use the boats”.The boats were named the James Caired which Shackleton went in. and two
other ones which are irrelevant. They rowed to Elephant Island, which is uninhabited so
Shackleton took his boat through to worst to the island of South Georgia. (Continued on next
page)
Shackleton Pg. 3
From there, Shackleton got help. He had 4 failed attempts to get a ship, then
he managed to get back to Elephant Island. They went back to south Georgia
with the rest of the crew, and counted. He had started with 28 men inclusive.
Now he only had 27 men not inclusive. Incredibly, he rescued all his men.
Through snow, sleet, hail, seas, only to have all his men rescued. The only
thing that died was the ship. That is his story.
Shackleton
His traits
Shackleton Pg. 4
• he was…
• Brave, courageous, unselfish.
• But what about his mistakes.
• He did not listen to the advice. And that’s basically it.
• We could give Shackleton the title Spirited Shackleton
• He put others above himself. He gave his gloves to other people.
More traits
• He was humble, he basically thought that he was just a sailor
• He was voracious in reading.
• He was a strong leader, he kept the men busy
• He was passionate about interests
• He could put himself in others shoes.
• Maintained his faith and moral compass. He could balance the completive with the
practical

Scott
His story
Scott Pg. 1
Scott had a ship, which did not sink but, either way, he would not return to it. He made so
many mistakes, that he died from them.
Scott set up a depot to store food. He stayed there until summer. The winters were bad for
training. But there was a first mistake. He was not used to the Antarctic environment. Only
penguins,Orcas (killer whales), and sea lions, dwelt there. What's more, he rushed around
because he was being raced. Amundsen from Norway had challenged him to be the first to the
pole. He had also trained in Greenland for -30 degree temperatures. Scott on the other hand,
had not. Scott left with 56 people, about 20 returned. He was one of the 36 who died. He split
the people into groups. But he asked Owens to join his group. Food rations grew less. What's
more, the other group had only 3 people to pull the very heavy sleds. (continued on next page)
Scott Pg. 2
Scott not only lost the race, but he also had poor equipment. His companions
died, then he did.
Scott
His traits
Scott Pg. 3
• Scott made many errors.
• He asked Owens to join his group.
• Took ponies.
• Not enough food.
• No training.
Scott
Sorry for the bad quality
There is no ‘what did we learn’ for this lesson,
because it is just a comparison.
Stay tuned in for the next episode on planets.
