Graduation Speech : Special Education Program
Students enrolled in special education programs are generally defined as passive learners. Many students in the special education program transfer their
passive classroom learning into their knowledge of their Individualized Education Program (IEP) and rarely demonstrate self–determination skills. Few
students attend their IEP meeting and fewer students know their IEP goals and goal areas. Thus, the students in thespecial education setting display a
lack of involvement and participation in their IEP, including the accommodations and modifications available to help them succeed. This researcher has
found that most of the students in the special education program at a rural northwest Iowa high school where she teaches are not actively involved in
their own IEP process. Also, the students do not understand why they are in the special education program; therefore, they do not attend IEP meetings
and are not active participants in goal setting and transition planning.
Context of the Problem
Only two of the 24 students being served in the researcher's rural school district could explain when and why they were placed in the special education
program, the purpose of the IEP meeting, and accommodations available to help them succeed. These same two students were the only two to attend
their annual IEP meeting. When asked by the researcher why the students did not attend the IEP annual meeting the most common response was, "They
don't need me."

After collaborating with my mentor teacher about the curriculum, she asked me to look over the 1st grade and 2nd grade curriculum and pick

Jostens Renaissance Education Program Analysis
As my school's class president, there have been various times where my school was impacted through Jostens. Through the Jostens Renaissance
Education program, there have been numerous positive outcomes. There has been an increase in our school spirit along with the engagement of the
students in school activities and events. Students are developing their own unique character which they spread through the halls of our school. More

Sex Education Programs
Sex education programs were created to reduce the number of teen pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV/AIDS. For a long time there has
been a debate over which sex education method, comprehensive or abstinence only, should be taught to adolescents. Comprehensive sex education is
an approach that "advocates giving teens age–appropriate instruction concerning birth control methods, safe sex, and differing sexual orientations"
(Kelly, 2011, p. 153). This method may encourage abstinence or waiting until marriage, but they also want to inform adolescents about the potential
risks and how to protect themselves from pregnancy or disease. Abstinence only education is "an approach to educating young people that emphasizes
the need to abstain from sexual relations until marriage" (Kelly, 2011, p. 154). People who strongly believe in this method may think that informing
young people about contraception and sexual behaviors will encourage the behavior rather than deter it. The effectiveness of a program is dependant on
the training provided to the educators and how well young people are interpreting and applying the information. According to the textbook, "one study
found that adolescents who received comprehensive sexuality education had a slightly lower rate of intercourse and were less likely to report

of decades has shown that prisons that have higher education programs created lower recidivism rates, reduction in crimes, saving to taxpayers, and

Graduation Speech : Special Education Program
Usually high school students meet with the counselor and follow a determined set of coursework in order to graduate high school. However, if a
student has been identified as a special needs student, the process of signing up for classes is not as simple as for other students. When trying to earn a
high school diploma, special education students encounter difficulties not faced by their peers. The first step is for parents, school staff, and the student
to meet and determine the best option for the student in order to receive a diploma. Determining the student's path is called an IEP, individualized
education plan. All special education students have an IEP that identifies the courses they will take in high school and the plans they will pursue after
graduation. Students may choose from four paths: the traditional pathway, the career pathway, the occupational pathway, or the certificate of
completion. The traditional pathway, which most advisors put the student on at first, allows the student the option of going to college. The next is the
career pathway, which does not require a student to have an eligibility ruling for special education but still is another option if the student cannot
obtain a high school diploma through the traditional path. Third, occupational pathway is a way to receive a diploma and not have to achieve as many
credits or pass state test, but is still a difficult process. The last option for special education students is certificate of completion.

All students need to be able to get the most out of school as they can and it is important to give all student the same opportunity. There are programs are
made specifically for students that have learning impairment, physical disabilities, mental handicaps or language barriers to help them succeed like any
other student.
In Texas we have Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD), with is a document that explains an individual educational program (IEP) for students
within the special education program. When determining the child's placement it is necessary to keep in mind the student's level of academic
performance, functional performance and if the disability affects their participation in the classroom. The individuals involved in these meetings are the
parents, the regular teacher, special educational teacher, representative knowledgeable about resources in the local district, and a translator if needed.
Parental participation is the most effective way to help the student succeed under ARD, the parents are given a parent's guide which contains
information, their right and responsibility, which should be constantly reviewed to have accurate information about the child. The child's ARD record
should be at the school, in the school district, and with the local education agency to insure the student is being well instructed for the disability they

I believe that the job analysis was extremely accurate; however the Myers–Briggs Test was not what I expected. All these years I hadthought I was an
ENFJ, but this test classified me as an ISFJ. I hypothesis this change was due to me taking the test much later. We as people go through many changes
and develop different habits throughout our life and the last time I took this test was in high school so perhaps I too have changed.
As for my personality traits matching with my dream job, strangely enough, instructional coordinators tend to be ENFJs, which is the Myer's Briggs

(Wood, 2006; 2012). When I was a high school sophomore, I sat in an Introductory Accounting course taught by a gruff teacher named Edward Key.
