The Grandmother Analysis
There are 4,200 religions in the world that people worship. Each religion different from the next, but
there is a catch. Most religions have one thing is common, that all of them believe in a being of
divine or super power. The Grandma is this story references praying to God a lot when conversing
with the Misfit. Her pleads for the Misfit to pray touches on a large theme, God's grace. The
Grandma tries to convince the Misfit that everyone can be saved by God's grace by saying, "'Why
you're one of my babies. You're one of my own children'" (O'Connor 28). Even with the catastrophic
ending of this text, the Misfit did achieve some level of grace. This level of grace is seen in the
Misfit because before the whole family is slaughtered he says, ... Show more content on

The reader is able to see the fate of the family is never actually in the hands of the family. The
family's fate is truly in the hands of the Misfit. The idea of fate is shown through the sky when it
conveyed as: "...see no sun...see no cloud either" (O'Connor 19). The glimmering sun would mean
the family would live, where the dark clouds would mean the family's death. Besides the sky
showing the status of the family's fate, their fate is controlled by a large outside factor, the Misfit.
The Misfit is the one who decides who lives, and who dies. The Misfit is the one who has the gun,
who has the men, and who has the mental advantage over the family. The reader realizes that the
Grandma's fate is sealed when she becomes the last one standing. The setting is illustrated as:
"There was a not a cloud in the sky...there was nothing around her but wood" (O'Connor 25). As the
Misfit stands over the Grandma, the clear open sky indicates that the Grandma has died and gone to
heaven. Even with all of the Grandma's pleads for her life, nothing was able to change her

My Grandmother Paragraph
My grandmother name is Maria Jimenez and she is the mother of my father who was born on
January 10, 1948. My grandmother was born in Puebla, Mexico in a small farm with her mother and
father. She was raised on a farm and had farm life duties as a child. She attended elementary school
and culminated still completing with her farm duties such as feeding the animals, picking up the
crops, watering the plants every morning, watching over the animals, and many other duties. My
grandmother and her parents were less fortunate than others and had to work harder. As a young
girl, her parents always talked to her about being someone is life and that she should go to school to
seek a better life opportunity but as farmers her parents were not able to afford her studies. They
would sell their crops in the market of the town. Maria attended middle school and always got the
highest grade in her class, she graduated with her classmates with good grades but could not attend
high school because her parents could not afford it. She worked for super markets, a farm worker
and maid. She later met my grandpa in the farm she was working in, the farm was in Mexico,
puebla. Maria parents were very religious, they were strict Catholics and tried to teach their children
the bible. My grandpa asked her to marry him at the age of 16 and he was 17. My grandmother's
parents agreed to the marriage because at those times people were getting married at such a young
age. They got married and built their own

Eulogy For Grandmother
When one becomes a sister, a seed is planted in the depths of both of their hearts. In order to grow,
the seed requires the warmth of the other's love, a dousing of compliments, and a breath of
encouragement. After some time, the seed blooms into a beautiful flower and gains the gazes of
many. It is the job of the other sister to protect her flower, so that it never gets picked. I am a sister.
The day I became one, was the first day I left the house without a doll in tow.
"I'm gonna have a new doll now, right Gramma?"
Grandma smiled as she buckled me in.
"Right, but this one you'll have to take extra good care of," she responded with a wink.
When Grandma and I arrived at the hospital, a kind nurse led us down a hall to a window enclosed
room. I immediately pressed my little nose and palms against the glass and peered in with a bit of
confusion. Three years and a couple feet tall, I did not understand why I couldn't hold her yet. I also
expected her to resemble one of my dolls, but that wasn't the case. None of my dolls ever turned
blue or had cords all over their body and face. Mommy and daddy gently rested their hands on my
shoulders. They appeared tired, a way I had never seen them before.
"Meagan is not doing well," they explained.
"Meagan.." I tried the word on my tongue.
The doctors entered behind the glass, and I watched as they began pressing buttons on the machines.
"Well I'm her sister. I can help her. Let me in there," I responded knowingly.

Eulogy For Grandmother
The summer going into 8th, it was both a joyful and unhappy summer. Unfortunately, my grandpa
died in at the very end of my 7th grade year, only a few days before school got out. My grandma
and grandpa lived in a large house in Spring Lake only a few blocks away from the beach, and when
my grandpa passed it was just my grandma living there by herself. Coincidentally, my neighbors
who lived right behind us were selling their house and moving to South Carolina. We talked to my
neighbors before anyone else looked at the house because we knew that the situation could not be
more perfect. Our neighbors were friendly but we were never really that close to them because they
were older and quiet, but we knew that the house would be a perfect spot for my grandma to live so
we can help her out. Our family knew that our grandma needed out help and she did not want to live
alone, this move was great for everyone. It was settled and in about a month my grandma would be
my new neighbor. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She lived in that house for about 40 years so there was a lot of stuff to sort through. The house was
very large with seven bedrooms but was also every old. The new people who were buying it want to

were all happy to have our grandma living directly behind us but also sad to see the house that they
had for so long go. Everything was in boxes and the house seemed lonely the packing was pretty
much done and by the beginning of August everything but the furniture was ready to go. The move
was set for august 8th. The move was now only a week

Emmy Begleiter Begleiter 1 English 11 Personal Essay 11/9/12 "The Loss of a Loved One" The
stillness of your beloved grandmother's face was frightening. She looked almost like a porcelain
doll. You saw your beloved lying in the casket wearing her favorite suit, her hair and makeup done
up nicely. This was goodbye. Your grandmother has now reunited with her husband who died almost
twenty years earlier, in the eternal happiness called heaven. Though you know that all of the pain
and suffering your grandmother endured has ended, it is still hard for you to picture what life will be
like without her. You are forced to go on with your life with your loved one only alive in your heart.

and look in her cubby. Even though you want to look, you can't because the lost memories would
shatter your heart. In some ways you dread the visit; in others you look forward to it. It is hard to
see your grandmother dying and always scared or upset that her days of youth have ended. That
beautiful woman with the perfect posture, the bright blue eyes, and the welcoming smile was gone.
She was in a wheelchair bent over, her hair a mess, and her eyes filled with true terror. It became

"Take me with you to America, dad!" I said. Tears escape my grandmother's eyes. "I am tired of
living the gypsy life!" Sobs thunder out of her, spill over the banks. During this time, my nine–year–
old vocabulary putrefied. Due to my father's recent victory of the Visa Lottery, and victory in
holding his family's one–way ticket to freedom, I became accustomed to and regurgitated my
parent's discontent with Romania. Despite having the opportunity to stay with my grandparents and
knowing that my bond with the most important person in my life–my grandmother–would shatter, I
eagerly leapt out of her arms. I leapt into the train that sped my parents, sister, and I towards an

grandmother because of all of the events that she had to overcome throughout her life have shaped
her into the person she is today. My grandmother, Earline Joy, was born in 1937 and is still living a
wonderful life. The event that affected her life include Civil Rights Movement, segregation, and 9–
ll. Segregation is the first thing that I know affected my grandmother growing up. Although slavery
was abolished in 1865 but, African American we still not being treated as humans. "Whites
completely dominated government and law enforcement. African Americans who even attempted to
register to vote risked being fired, harassed beaten, or killed (Aretha 12)."
Under the Jim crow laws, Whites and blacks were separated in many daily activities (Altman 34).
This made it harder for blacks in the society to get a job, to get an education, and basically forced
them to be inferior to whites. "The Thirteenth through Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution–
known collectively as the Civil War Amendments–granted fundamental citizenship rights to blacks,

putting antidiscrimination laws in place by the end of the century, Southern states were moving in

Grandma's voice was warm, gentle, even beautiful. My grandmother was beautiful, there could be
millions of people singing, and I'd still be able to pick hers out its so beautiful. I laid there on the
couch listening to her gentle voice, smiling every time she brushed her gentle fingers thoroughly my
brown hair. But her voice was quickly silenced by the loud chomps of what sounded like a bear. It

jogged down the stairs, and skipped the rest of the way there. Excitingly, I handed grandpa the

Grandmother And Shining
Old people are very precious people, and they are very fragile. They are respected people because
they are the seniors of everyone else. They also have a very tender heart, so they have to be taken
care of attentively. In both pieces, " The Aged Mother ", by Matsuo Basho and " The Last Words of
my English Grandmother " by William Carlos Williams expand the theme of respecting and caring
for the elders. The theme in both pieces are introduced in different ways, but they show a lot of
similarities. " The Aged Mother " by Matsuo Basho is a folktale that illustrates about a farmer by the
name of Shining and his aged mother who are governed by a leader who grants an inhuman
proclamation that states the aged people living has to be sentenced to death and they no longer can
live. Shining refuses to let his mother die, so he had come up with a plan. In the text, it states, " Oh,
Honorable Mother, your kindness breaks my heart! I will not leave you. Together we will follow the
path of twigs, and together we will die!" This quote indicates that Shining shows a lot of devotion
for his aged mother so he doesn't want her to die alone. In the poem, " The Last Words of my

The Grandmother Deception
Everyone is out for themselves... this is how the grandmother character was. The grandmother only
cared about herself, herself and if there was a little more room it would be herself. However, this
deception might be deceived when she tells her son that she "wouldn't take my children in any
direction with a criminal like that aloose in it. I couldn't answer to my conscience if I did." As the
story progresses we see how the grandmother did not only led them to the criminal on the loose but
also did not show any mercy towards her own blood and only try to save herself.
The most important feature for the grandmother was for other individuals to know she was a lady,
which is humorous, due to the fact that besides appearance, she was everything but a lady. The
grandmother is not only selfish because she wants to manipulate Bailey to go to Tennessee, but also
when she directed them to the plantation she had visited when she was younger, knowing it would
delay them and knowing Bailey did not want to make extra stops; furthermore, causing the accident
and hoping she was injured to avoid repercussions. In addition, we can see what kind of lady she is
when she tells The Misfit that he "wouldn't shoot a lady", as well as offering her soon to be dead
sons clothes to his murder. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In contrast, once Bailey was murdered, the mother did not want to live anymore, however after
every one of the members of her family was dead, the grandmother was still trying to find the weak
spot of The Misfit 'heart' with religion and his family; the grandmother's effort to empathize with
The Misfit through religion and his family was unsuccessful, since The Misfit ends up shooting her
anyway, although she delayed the progress by using her lady characteristics, the grandmother was
only able to delay it enough until she was the last member of the family to be

Racism In The Grandmother
In this short story a family of six plus a cat are going on vacation. The grandmother wanted to go to
Tennessee but everyone else wanted to go to Florida. Driving in the car on a very long drive to
Florida they stopped and seen many things that the Grandmother recalled in her head. This is why
the whole family ended up in a serious situation. The grandmother is mysterious old woman, who is
racist, not smart, and much conceded that caused a problem along the way.
Growing up in the early 1950's people were know to be racist but grandmother took it too far with
her comments. Driving down the road with the family and the grandma makes a racist comment,"

The grandmother wanted to make sure if she died, people would recognize her. All the family was
dressed in t–shirts and pants for the car ride to Florida but "the grandmother had on a navy blue
straw sailor hat with a bunch of white violets on the brim and a navy blue dress with a small white
dot in the print. Her collars and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace and at her neckline she
had pinned a purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet" (368). This just shows that the
grandmother cares about her appearance and what others think about her. It almost makes it seems
like she planned this whole thing in her head. When she was having a conversation with the misfit
she asked, "You wouldn't shoot a lady, would you?" (373). The grandmother seems like she only
cares for safety right now and not anyone else's. As the grandmother, she should be trying to protect
her family instead she's protecting her own life. The grandmother got her own family in a terrible
situation because of one bad memory. She probably did feel really guilty about the situation but
what else could she of done? The moral of the story sometimes it takes a tragic thing to happen to
find out who someone really is. The family never made it out of the crash

The Grandmother Symbolism
The term a good man or a good woman in the story means to be someone that The grandmother
believes to have the same values and beliefs that she had in her younger years. She refers to Red
Sammy as a good man after he explains that he allowed two men to charge their gasoline. "Its
Because you are a good man" (O'Connor 1955 pg 300). The grandmother also uses this term for the
Misfit. "Listen she said, " you shouldn't call yourself the misfit because I know you are a good man
at heart. I can just look at you and tell" (O'Connor 1955 pg 304). Even though this is her way to try

with their grandparents because they are full of stories and always seem to have candy or cookie
with them. Children are always excited about their grandparents ' visitation especially on holidays

world. In the long run, their life turned upside down, and they never get to see that day comes to

have done to keep them longer. First of all, my great–grandmother Akosua, was not just an ordinary

grandmother Akosua was younger, she traveled around the world, serving her famous cuisine to
workers in isolated places. There were any cars during those day so she walked by foot crossing
boarder to boarder entering into other lands. She would take two week trip to the other native land

she would stay longer, and cook for them. She was always trying new things and going beyond her

Some people have grandparents, and others don't. I am so incredibly blessed to be a part of my
grandmother's family. Unfortunately, I don't get to see this loving person very often. She lives in
Canada alongside the rest of my family. When I lived in Michigan my parents, brother and I owned

the trailer. My grandma comes to visit us around three times a year, and we go down to see her on

their grandparents, so I ask them, "Why?" I get many responses like, "They give me expensive

that. She teaches me how to speak with love, encourages me to put in effort, and helps me realize

My Grandmother : My Grandmother
Many of us take people in our lives for granted and don't realize how important these people were
until we've lost them. We often forget to appreciate and cherish the time we have with them and fail
to recognize the impact they have on our life before it's too late. People should treasure the time
they have with their loved ones. Someone who I try to appreciate and cherish the time with is my
grandmother, who I refer to as Nina. My grandmother was a huge part of my childhood; I loved her
dearly. While my mom was busy with college, she was the one with whom I spent most of my days.
I remember disrupting the calm atmosphere of my grandmother's house with my frantic questioning
about food to fill the void in my stomach. By the time I was awake, frozen waffles were placed into
the burgundy toaster, in the burgundy kitchen, in the burgundy house filled with apple decorations.
Afterwards, I'd go alongside her out the door so she could water her plants while the grass watered
my feet with dew. Later on, I'd listen to her sing songs no one else knew but her: "Chicken heart,
chicken gizzards, my true love is as slick as a lizard." She claimed it was an actual song lyric from
an old country song, but I have my suspicions because I have yet to find out what song it came
from. Navarro 1 When I was five, my mother decided we should move twelve hours and nine

people who had to take medicine because she was sick and even some time we would have to take

other time she had to take medication, but she didn't tell no one because she hated the hospitals. We

Manipulative Grandmother
The grandmother of the story, in "A Good Man is Hard to Find," by Flannery O'Connor, a
stereotypical old lady, finds herself in the middle of a life or death situation, her reason for living is
because she is a woman. Not to mention she is selfish, the Grandma is only asking for her survival
when the rest of her family is on the verge of death, including her own son. No one is perfect in this
story. The father of the children has a dry attitude, e.g., "He didn't have a naturally sunny
disposition." The mother shows no emotion/ physical bond towards her children. The children show
no form of manners in public scenarios, e.g., "I wouldn't live in a broken–down place like this for a
million bucks."
As the family voyages on a vacation, a manipulative grandmother insists on visiting an old house
she remembers from when she was young. By persisting and hinting, she gets the entire family to
turn around to search for the house. From the beginning the grandma has not been tolerable. She
argued over going to Tennessee over Florida, she packed her cat into her suitcase knowing it was not
allowed, she did not spare the truth when upon realizing the house they were searching for was in
fact not in Georgia, where they were, but in Tennessee. The family ended in an automobile accident
on their way to the non existing house. They encounter the Misfit as he comes down to conversate

windows were olive shutters located along the pavement five lots down the road. My grandmother,
Darlene was a big component in raising me and my two siblings to be the people we are today since
she was located so close. Let me reveal the life this amazing woman experienced and what made her
whom she is today. In the year of 1956 on June fourteenth, a day we know as flag day my
grandmother was born into this world. The parents of my grandmother were named Effie and
Marvin Smith, although I never met them they were still part of the family. Effie was a stay at home
mom accompanying responsibility of the chores, cooking and the children's wellness. Marvin spent
his days at the nearby post office to support the family of seven. My grandmother grew up with
multiple siblings, being the youngest of three older sisters and one older brother.

are today. When she was a dinky girl they could leave the doors and windows

Hard To Find Grandmother
In "A good man is hard to find", the grandmother is like no other character in the short story. The
grandmother plays a main character that produces much of the conflict and troubles. Have you ever
met anyone that tries to make the best decisions for them, or their family, but ultimately it turns out
to be a disaster? This story tells of the adventure of a man name Billy, his family and his elderly
mother who began on a road trip to Florida. On the trip, the grandmother convinces her son to take a
detour which results in tragedy. My beliefs are the grandma had all good intentions, however, she
has an attitude of being selfish, manipulative and deceitful to make things go her way. This is much
like a friend I know. For this essay, we will call that friend "Tiffany".
At the beginning of the story, we see that the grandmother has good intentions. The grandmother
brings to Bailey, the son, the idea of going to another location for the vacation. She gives Bailey a
newspaper which reads about an escaped convict who is on his way to Florida. Her tone lets me ...

In the story, the grandma begins to tell a story about the old house she used to live in when she was
younger. The grandmother was anxious to revisit the house, but she knew Bailey would not want to
revisit the old house. The grandma manipulates and lies by saying "There was a secret panel in this
house" (p. 443). She said this skilled in deception. She knew that this will stimulate the kids to want
to visit. The kids then proceed to beg and plea to visit the house, which in return, they did. This
resembles how my friend Tiffany is when she is determined to visit somewhere. Tiffany will go to
great lengths by excessively explaining a destination. She will give the best amenities, as well as
fabricate more details. She will not tell you the unsatisfactory or inconvenience it may cause. Her

The Story of Grandmother
Religion has always been around for many years and will continue to live on. Since 2014, there are
an estimated 4,200 different religions, all over the world each believing in different things Having
their own set of rules and tradition that must be followed. Storytelling became a way to give people
advice or telling people what would happen if they disobey their religious rules or tradition. In the
story of a grandmother, it critiques religion for the way it can lead to snap judgments and a loss of
freedom. Religions set a snap judgment of people in the same religion or even in different religions.
Each religion slandering the others, some examples are Christianity believe the pagans worships the
devil while The Romans slandering Christians say that they are atheist and cannibals. Each religion
creating conflict with the next sometimes this can lead to war, which is called the Holy wars killing
each other in the name of their gods. While it can lead to many conflicts outside of their religious
group they are a bigger one inside. If a person from the group ... Show more content on

As we are driving to my grandmother's house in the early morning, my family gets excited about the
upcoming family festivities, and memories to be relived. Family members and friends are so excited
to see each other and those family members we haven't seen in years. As we pass all the decorations
on the houses, mom steps on the gas to make us go a little quicker, so we can see my grandma
faster. When we finally turn down grandma's street, we realize we are almost there. My sisters and I
are jumping out of our seats and unbuckling our seat belts because we know what's inside. We know
there are presents under a decorated, festive tree that need to be opened. As my sisters and I quickly

yellows of the eggs, butter, milk, and the vanilla into a big tarnished pot. I had never seen her make
this before. When the liquid was done brewing, I asked her, " Grandma, where is that white, fluffy
stuff you put on top?" She then got a mixer, put egg whites in a bowl and began mixing. I honestly
didn't know how this slimy, clear liquid would turn into something that was white and fluffy. Before
I knew it, it started to rise as the mixer beat the whites. What I saw next was this soft, white, airy
topping. We scooped the liquid into cups and put the meringue, which is the actual name for the
white fluffy topping, on top. We served it to our family, and everybody was even happier than

Digital Story of My Grandmother Who doesn't love a close relative? Imagine what it is like to be
alone, without a supportive family member. Just like John Lennon's song, Imagine. Think about
what family can do to you, and how they impact your life. Especially, a grandmother.
My grandma Pauline, was literally my world. I loved her so much, and still do. I used to walk to her
house almost every weekend. She knew everything about me. She always had a salver, filled with
my favorite confectionary. A saccharine, vanilla Tootsie Roll. Her countenance would glow, as I ate
the petit, pearly treat. Every time my mother, and my sisters would visit her, she would quote, "You
made my day!" I miss those meaningful days. My granny Pauline, I only had known her for nine
years, but somehow counseled myself to build a limited bond, little did I know, would only last
about nine years. I didn't know what could go wrong. Every night for three years straight, I would
ask, Will Grandma Pauline come to visit me when I'm older? Of course, I was only about ages four
through seven, thinking she will last forever, just like a stone, with a few changes, she would always
be Pauline Martins.
Years past. I am know nine years old. Things have become better, and worse. I remember every nick

The Misfit Grandmother
The grandmother is an old woman who likes it her way or no way. She does this by being talkative
and manipulating others to do what she wants. As said on page 860, "You wouldn't shoot a lady,
would you?" the Grandmother said and removed a clean handkerchief from her cuff and began to
slap at her eyes with it." She is selfish and only cares about herself being shot. She does not care
that the rest of the family was taken to the woods and shot she only cares if she lives. She tries to
manipulate The Misfit to not shoot her because she is a lady and everyone knows it is not proper to
shoot a lady. The Misfit believes her arguments are irrelevant, he doesn't care to shoot a lady
considering he was acknowledged while on the run.
Considering how manipulative the Grandmother is and since her initial tactic did not work how she
planned, she moved toward telling him he is a good man and his parents must have been nice
people. "Listen," the grandmother almost screamed, "I know you're a good man. You don't look a bit
like you have common blood. I know you must come from nice people!"(860). She is hoping that
getting him to believe he is a good man will work, therefore he will not shoot her and instead ...

I interview my maternal great–grandmother, Jane Franklin. She is 81 years old and she was born in
Shelter Island, Long Island, NY. She currently lives in Aiken, SC, but she just recently moved from

Although we were not as well off as we are now, we were still better off than they were. We could
afford most of the foods we wanted as well as items not deemed as necessities. I also am not as
religious as my great–grandmother. I do not consider myself a Christian. I would love to learn about
other religions before I label myself. My family understands this, and they do not pressure me into
being a Christian. I still grew up going to a Christian church throughout my childhood. Another
difference is that my parents have stayed together throughout my childhood and remain together
now. Her father and mother got a divorce, and was not living with them. Like my great–
grandmother, I am an African American woman. I live in a happy and loving household. I was
discipline the same ways she was. Our family also still enjoys the major holidays like Christmas and
Thanksgiving. Even though now our family is not in one single state, we still try to see them at least
once or twice a year. There are some obvious differences in the way my great–grandmother and I
were brought up. There are some things that are alike. But, there are similarities and differences in
the way each generation is brought up. Especially with technology improving and becoming a large
part of our lives. I believe being brought up differently makes us the people we are today.
Nevertheless, I love her with all my heart and I know she feels the

The Misfit Grandmother
From the last quote it is concluded that both the Misfit and the Grandmother are equal to the eyes of
God. Consequently, from a Catholic perspective, when she recognizes him as one of her children,
she is acknowledging their participation in the Mystical Body of Christ.
However, at the same time, the touching of the Misfit by the Grandmother is an acceptance of the
evil by which the Misfit has been treated, "I call myself The Misfit," he say, "because I can't make
what all I done wrong fit what all I gone through in punishment" (O'Connor 142). The touching, as
an act for forgiveness, is what unsteadies the Misfit, who has known only suffering and "meanness"
in this life (142). Then, the act of the Grandmother does correspond to an offering ... Show more

Does her performance fit that of a Catholic? Apparently, it does not. The Grandmother's attitude in
the story echoes that of a Protestant, specifically, that of a Puritan. As the story progresses, the
Grandmother voices the importance of success in redemption. The Grandmother presents herself as
a "lady" who wears "white cotton gloves", "a navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of white
violets in the brim" and a matching dress (O'Connor 130). This lady is quite self–centered,
manipulative, and proud; she is constantly persuading her family to make them do what she wants.
For example, after the Grandmother has convinced them to take the dirt road, and she realizes that
the house they are looking for is not in Georgia, but in Tennessee, the Grandmother stays silent to
avoid the embarrassment. However, the most distinctive aspect of the Grandmother's personality is
her sense of Utopia. She is constantly recoiling better times which she associates with the Old South
of Gone with the Wind, "when there were no paved roads" (135), and more importantly, when good
men were easy to find. There also traces of what Lipset calls morality plays in the Grandmother; at
the beginning of the story, the Grandmother does not want to go to Florida because she "wouldn't
take [her] children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it. [She] couldn't answer to
[her] conscience if [she] did" (129). From the latter is drawn that she sees the Misfit situation as a
battle against the Devil, and then it is unthinkable to get even close to the

When people think about great women many think of Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, and Susan B.
Anthony these women overcame struggles in their life that would change history. While my
grandmother didn't change history she also overcame many struggles in life that would change her.
Marsha Lynn Farrell born January 31, 1948, grew up in a very different America than today. She
would deal with struggles that most girls her age didn't deal with. From her mother and father
getting a divorce, her mother having a kid out of wedlock and dealing with family tragedies. These
struggles in life made her a strong woman and able to adapt to any situation. She grew up fast and
no matter what life threw at her she was able to overcome the problem and put her family first
which has inspired me to do the same. At first, my grandma's life was like anyone else in the 1950s
with a hard–working father and loving and caring mother. This would all change though when she
moved from Kansas City to St. Joseph. After moving her mother and dad split up which at the time
divorce was looked down on and seen as the women's fault. As my grandma says, "People looked
down on my mom but I didn't blame her." Her father was an alcoholic and after he left she only saw
him twice in her life one of those times he was drunk. Growing up with only one parent is hard
especially when you see other kids with both a mom and dad wishing you could be them. This did
not affect my grandmother except for making her closer to

It was 6:25 AM and I was beginning to wake up. I was on my top bunk of our bunk bed and I said to

Essay on My Grandmother
My Grandmother
This poem explores the relationship between the speaker and her grandmother. It focuses on the
remorse and guilt she felt – and perhaps does still feel – about the way she behaved towards her on
one occasion, and can be seen as an attempt to exorcise this.
The poem is divided into four parts: the first stanza describes her grandmother working in the shop;
the second the incident which causes her guilt; the third stanza shows her in retirement. In the final
stanza, after her grandmother has died, the speaker reflects on herself and her grandmother's life.
The first stanza sets the scene – the antique shop reflects the character and life of the grandmother.
The words 'it kept her' suggest that it seems, to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, beneath the images of polish, silver and brass lies someone who can be 'hurt', who feels
though never speaks about how she feels, and who comes to be
'frail'; the poem deals with the speaker's complex response to this realisation. The grandmother's life
is bound up with the antiques even after she no longer keeps the shop. They accompany her to the
'long, narrow room' in which she essentially waits to die. This third stanza is full of unattractive
images – shadows, the smell of absence, things too long shut up – yet the speaker still has to
acknowledge that, to her grandmother, they represent 'all her best things'. This imagery sums up the
lfe of a person who has been defined by her antiques – 'the smell of absences' suggests the memories
that the grandmother attaches to these objects, but it also hints at an unfulfilled existence, while
'the shadows.../ That can't be polished' suggest the grandmother's loss of her habitual control as she
nears death (a state itself often associated with shadow), and are a disturbingly vague image.
In the poem's final image, 'the new dust falling through the air',
Jennings economically suggests the grandmother's joining of the antiques she devoted her life to.
But this image simultaneously reminds us of her absence from the room

Lessons with Grandma Sarah
My grandmother, Sarah, is probably the most knowledgeable person I have known since my
childhood. Whenever our schoolteacher asked us to learn about our heritage, I would call over the
phone so that she could explain things I wanted to know. It was a good way of keeping in touch with
her at the moment. However, with time, the need to learn about my heritage or other things that
required her explanation declined, and we lost touch for a long time. Owing to our busy schedule,
we would only go to visit her on major holidays such as Thanksgiving Day, where all members of
the family dedicated their time to celebrate with each other. In 2005, during the Thanksgiving ...

The Grandmother Analysis

  • 1. The Grandmother Analysis There are 4,200 religions in the world that people worship. Each religion different from the next, but there is a catch. Most religions have one thing is common, that all of them believe in a being of divine or super power. The Grandma is this story references praying to God a lot when conversing with the Misfit. Her pleads for the Misfit to pray touches on a large theme, God's grace. The Grandma tries to convince the Misfit that everyone can be saved by God's grace by saying, "'Why you're one of my babies. You're one of my own children'" (O'Connor 28). Even with the catastrophic ending of this text, the Misfit did achieve some level of grace. This level of grace is seen in the Misfit because before the whole family is slaughtered he says, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reader is able to see the fate of the family is never actually in the hands of the family. The family's fate is truly in the hands of the Misfit. The idea of fate is shown through the sky when it conveyed as: "...see no sun...see no cloud either" (O'Connor 19). The glimmering sun would mean the family would live, where the dark clouds would mean the family's death. Besides the sky showing the status of the family's fate, their fate is controlled by a large outside factor, the Misfit. The Misfit is the one who decides who lives, and who dies. The Misfit is the one who has the gun, who has the men, and who has the mental advantage over the family. The reader realizes that the Grandma's fate is sealed when she becomes the last one standing. The setting is illustrated as: "There was a not a cloud in the sky...there was nothing around her but wood" (O'Connor 25). As the Misfit stands over the Grandma, the clear open sky indicates that the Grandma has died and gone to heaven. Even with all of the Grandma's pleads for her life, nothing was able to change her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. My Grandmother Paragraph My grandmother name is Maria Jimenez and she is the mother of my father who was born on January 10, 1948. My grandmother was born in Puebla, Mexico in a small farm with her mother and father. She was raised on a farm and had farm life duties as a child. She attended elementary school and culminated still completing with her farm duties such as feeding the animals, picking up the crops, watering the plants every morning, watching over the animals, and many other duties. My grandmother and her parents were less fortunate than others and had to work harder. As a young girl, her parents always talked to her about being someone is life and that she should go to school to seek a better life opportunity but as farmers her parents were not able to afford her studies. They would sell their crops in the market of the town. Maria attended middle school and always got the highest grade in her class, she graduated with her classmates with good grades but could not attend high school because her parents could not afford it. She worked for super markets, a farm worker and maid. She later met my grandpa in the farm she was working in, the farm was in Mexico, puebla. Maria parents were very religious, they were strict Catholics and tried to teach their children the bible. My grandpa asked her to marry him at the age of 16 and he was 17. My grandmother's parents agreed to the marriage because at those times people were getting married at such a young age. They got married and built their own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Eulogy For Grandmother When one becomes a sister, a seed is planted in the depths of both of their hearts. In order to grow, the seed requires the warmth of the other's love, a dousing of compliments, and a breath of encouragement. After some time, the seed blooms into a beautiful flower and gains the gazes of many. It is the job of the other sister to protect her flower, so that it never gets picked. I am a sister. The day I became one, was the first day I left the house without a doll in tow. "I'm gonna have a new doll now, right Gramma?" Grandma smiled as she buckled me in. "Right, but this one you'll have to take extra good care of," she responded with a wink. When Grandma and I arrived at the hospital, a kind nurse led us down a hall to a window enclosed room. I immediately pressed my little nose and palms against the glass and peered in with a bit of confusion. Three years and a couple feet tall, I did not understand why I couldn't hold her yet. I also expected her to resemble one of my dolls, but that wasn't the case. None of my dolls ever turned blue or had cords all over their body and face. Mommy and daddy gently rested their hands on my shoulders. "Not right now ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Eulogy For Grandmother The summer going into 8th, it was both a joyful and unhappy summer. Unfortunately, my grandpa died in at the very end of my 7th grade year, only a few days before school got out. My grandma and grandpa lived in a large house in Spring Lake only a few blocks away from the beach, and when my grandpa passed it was just my grandma living there by herself. Coincidentally, my neighbors who lived right behind us were selling their house and moving to South Carolina. We talked to my neighbors before anyone else looked at the house because we knew that the situation could not be more perfect. Our neighbors were friendly but we were never really that close to them because they were older and quiet, but we knew that the house would be a perfect spot for my grandma to live so we can help her out. Our family knew that our grandma needed out help and she did not want to live alone, this move was great for everyone. It was settled and in about a month my grandma would be my new neighbor. ... The new people who were buying it want to renovate it and add onto the back of the house. Everyone had mixed feelings about the move. We were all happy to have our grandma living directly behind us but also sad to see the house that they had for so long go. Everything was in boxes and the house seemed lonely the packing was pretty much done and by the beginning of August everything but the furniture was ready to go. The move was set for august 8th. • 5. Grandmother Emmy Begleiter Begleiter 1 English 11 Personal Essay 11/9/12 "The Loss of a Loved One" The stillness of your beloved grandmother's face was frightening. She looked almost like a porcelain doll. You saw your beloved lying in the casket wearing her favorite suit, her hair and makeup done up nicely. This was goodbye. Your grandmother has now reunited with her husband who died almost twenty years earlier, in the eternal happiness called heaven. Though you know that all of the pain and suffering your grandmother endured has ended, it is still hard for you to picture what life will be like without her. You are forced to go on with your life with your loved one only alive in your heart. In a way, it seemed like your ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the shadowbox outside of each room were relics of their husband or wife, children, grandchildren, and their passions. It filled you with sorrow. You come to your grandmother's room and look in her cubby. Even though you want to look, you can't because the lost memories would shatter your heart. In some ways you dread the visit; in others you look forward to it. It is hard to see your grandmother dying and always scared or upset that her days of youth have ended. That beautiful woman with the perfect posture, the bright blue eyes, and the welcoming smile was gone. She was in a wheelchair bent over, her hair a mess, and her eyes filled with true terror. It became hard to look at your beloved like this; yet you know that you won't be able to be in her company for much longer. So you look forward to spending time in her living presence. Begleiter 4 As you walk in and sign your name in the visitor's book, you begin to wonder if this is a dream. For sixteen years, your grandmother has been by your side. Whether in Florida or Connecticut, she was there. You could always call her and share your feelings, your excitement and your fears. Now you can hardly talk to her. • 6. Eulogy For Grandmother "Take me with you to America, dad!" I said. Tears escape my grandmother's eyes. "I am tired of living the gypsy life!" Sobs thunder out of her, spill over the banks. During this time, my nine–year– old vocabulary putrefied. Due to my father's recent victory of the Visa Lottery, and victory in holding his family's one–way ticket to freedom, I became accustomed to and regurgitated my parent's discontent with Romania. Despite having the opportunity to stay with my grandparents and knowing that my bond with the most important person in my life–my grandmother–would shatter, I eagerly leapt out of her arms. I leapt into the train that sped my parents, sister, and I towards an unknown land: a yellow–colored country that appeared in a weathered atlas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 7. My Grandmother Research paper Every struggle in your life has shaped the person you are today be thankful for hard times; they only can make you stronger– unknown. I feel that this quote best goes with my grandmother because of all of the events that she had to overcome throughout her life have shaped her into the person she is today. My grandmother, Earline Joy, was born in 1937 and is still living a wonderful life. The event that affected her life include Civil Rights Movement, segregation, and 9– ll. Segregation is the first thing that I know affected my grandmother growing up. Although slavery was abolished in 1865 but, African American we still not being treated as humans. "Whites completely dominated government and law enforcement. African Americans who even attempted to register to vote risked being fired, harassed beaten, or killed (Aretha 12)." Under the Jim crow laws, Whites and blacks were separated in many daily activities (Altman 34). This made it harder for blacks in the society to get a job, to get an education, and basically forced them to be inferior to whites. "The Thirteenth through Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution– known collectively as the Civil War Amendments–granted fundamental citizenship rights to blacks, but the reality in the South was quite different. Even as eighteen states in the North and West were putting antidiscrimination laws in place by the end of the century, Southern states were moving in the opposite direction, creating a system of ... • 8. Eulogy For Grandmother Grandma's voice was warm, gentle, even beautiful. My grandmother was beautiful, there could be millions of people singing, and I'd still be able to pick hers out its so beautiful. I laid there on the couch listening to her gentle voice, smiling every time she brushed her gentle fingers thoroughly my brown hair. But her voice was quickly silenced by the loud chomps of what sounded like a bear. It was grandpa he was up, dressed, and gobbling down some eggs and bacon. "We better get a goin Kaybug," Papaw yelled as if I was a mile away from him. Anxious and amused, I went in my room and had grandma help me get dressed. By the time I was dressed and ready to go, grandpa had already gotten the fishing poles and started to head down to the Elk River. We rushed down the hill, jogged down the stairs, and skipped the rest of the way there. Excitingly, I handed grandpa the bucket of squirmy worms, so he could help me put them on the poles. Papaw then took it off the hook, so we could cook and devour it. He sat the fish down on two distorted rocks that were crossed over the fire. Papaw went to go check his pole when all of a sudden, I heard a hissing noise and, apparently grandpa did too. "Kk can you come over here with papaw," he said with a hint of worry in his voice. • 9. Grandmother And Shining Old people are very precious people, and they are very fragile. They are respected people because they are the seniors of everyone else. They also have a very tender heart, so they have to be taken care of attentively. In both pieces, " The Aged Mother ", by Matsuo Basho and " The Last Words of my English Grandmother " by William Carlos Williams expand the theme of respecting and caring for the elders. The theme in both pieces are introduced in different ways, but they show a lot of similarities. " The Aged Mother " by Matsuo Basho is a folktale that illustrates about a farmer by the name of Shining and his aged mother who are governed by a leader who grants an inhuman proclamation that states the aged people living has to be sentenced to death and they no longer can live. Shining refuses to let his mother die, so he had come up with a plan. In the text, it states, " Oh, Honorable Mother, your kindness breaks my heart! I will not leave you. Together we will follow the path of twigs, and together we will die!" This quote indicates that Shining shows a lot of devotion for his aged mother so he doesn't want her to die alone. • 10. The Grandmother Deception Everyone is out for themselves... this is how the grandmother character was. The grandmother only cared about herself, herself and if there was a little more room it would be herself. However, this deception might be deceived when she tells her son that she "wouldn't take my children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it. I couldn't answer to my conscience if I did." As the story progresses we see how the grandmother did not only led them to the criminal on the loose but also did not show any mercy towards her own blood and only try to save herself. The most important feature for the grandmother was for other individuals to know she was a lady, which is humorous, due to the fact that besides appearance, she was everything but a lady. The grandmother is not only selfish because she wants to manipulate Bailey to go to Tennessee, but also when she directed them to the plantation she had visited when she was younger, knowing it would delay them and knowing Bailey did not want to make extra stops; furthermore, causing the accident and hoping she was injured to avoid repercussions. In addition, we can see what kind of lady she is when she tells The Misfit that he "wouldn't shoot a lady", as well as offering her soon to be dead sons clothes to his murder. ... Driving in the car on a very long drive to Florida they stopped and seen many things that the Grandmother recalled in her head. This is why the whole family ended up in a serious situation. The grandmother is mysterious old woman, who is racist, not smart, and much conceded that caused a problem along the way. Growing up in the early 1950's people were know to be racist but grandmother took it too far with her comments. Her collars and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace and at her neckline she had pinned a purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet" (368). This just shows that the grandmother cares about her appearance and what others think about her. It almost makes it seems like she planned this whole thing in her head. When she was having a conversation with the misfit she asked, "You wouldn't shoot a lady, would you?" (373). The grandmother seems like she only cares for safety right now and not anyone else's. As the grandmother, she should be trying to protect her family instead she's protecting her own life. The grandmother got her own family in a terrible situation because of one bad memory. She probably did feel really guilty about the situation but what else could she of done? The moral of the story sometimes it takes a tragic thing to happen to find out who someone really is. • 13. The Remembrance Of A Grandmother In Remembrance OF A Grandmother Grandparents are the best of friend and gentle person you will ever meet. They love and care about their granddaughters very much. Children enjoy spending time with their grandparents because they are full of stories and always seem to have candy or cookie with them. Children are always excited about their grandparents ' visitation especially on holidays and birthdays. They hoped that one day they will see their granddaughters grow up and change the world. In the long run, their life turned upside down, and they never get to see that day comes to pass. One day they are here and then they are gone, leaving you behind wondering what you could have done to keep them longer. First of all, my great–grandmother Akosua, was not just an ordinary woman. She was talented, adventurous, friendly and joyful person you will ever meet. When grandmother Akosua was younger, she traveled around the world, serving her famous cuisine to workers in isolated places. There were any cars during those day so she walked by foot crossing boarder to boarder entering into other lands. She would take two week trip to the other native land and sell food to the people who were living or working there. Sometimes when her food is finished, she would stay longer, and cook for them. Unfortunately, I don't get to see this loving person very often. She lives in Canada alongside the rest of my family. When I lived in Michigan my parents, brother and I owned a trailer in Canada that we would go to all of the time. In 2012 we moved to Ohio, so we had to sell the trailer. My grandma comes to visit us around three times a year, and we go down to see her on some holidays. I have grown to appreciate her more and more. I hear a lot of people say they love their grandparents, so I ask them, "Why?" I get many responses like, "They give me expensive presents!" or "They make really good food!" My grandma does this, too, but it's so much more than that. She teaches me how to speak with love, encourages me to put in effort, and helps me realize that the little things matter. As Emma continued her story, her voice got louder, and louder. It just kept climbing and climbing until she finally reached the pinnacle of her voice, and just broke down. We often forget to appreciate and cherish the time we have with them and fail to recognize the impact they have on our life before it's too late. People should treasure the time they have with their loved ones. Someone who I try to appreciate and cherish the time with is my grandmother, who I refer to as Nina. My grandmother was a huge part of my childhood; I loved her dearly. While my mom was busy with college, she was the one with whom I spent most of my days. I remember disrupting the calm atmosphere of my grandmother's house with my frantic questioning about food to fill the void in my stomach. By the time I was awake, frozen waffles were placed into the burgundy toaster, in the burgundy kitchen, in the burgundy house filled with apple decorations. Afterwards, I'd go alongside her out the door so she could water her plants while the grass watered my feet with dew. Later on, I'd listen to her sing songs no one else knew but her: "Chicken heart, chicken gizzards, my true love is as slick as a lizard." She claimed it was an actual song lyric from an old country song, but I have my suspicions because I have yet to find out what song it came from. My grandma was known by many people in our neighborhood everybody used to think of her as a mom so we would go out with chairs and just sit in the front of the house just watching everyone pass by and wave. My grandma was one of the people who had to take medicine because she was sick and even some time we would have to take her to the hospital and stay overnight because of her illness. But that day she felt worse than any other time she had to take medication, but she didn't tell no one because she hated the hospitals. We went back inside when my mom came home really happy to see both of us. When my grandma has taken her pill, she started feeling dizzy and fainted but my dad caught her just on time and took her to her bed to get some rest. She always denied getting some rest but for once in her life she had agreed to rest. • 20. Manipulative Grandmother The grandmother of the story, in "A Good Man is Hard to Find," by Flannery O'Connor, a stereotypical old lady, finds herself in the middle of a life or death situation, her reason for living is because she is a woman. Not to mention she is selfish, the Grandma is only asking for her survival when the rest of her family is on the verge of death, including her own son. No one is perfect in this story. The father of the children has a dry attitude, e.g., "He didn't have a naturally sunny disposition." The mother shows no emotion/ physical bond towards her children. The children show no form of manners in public scenarios, e.g., "I wouldn't live in a broken–down place like this for a million bucks." As the family voyages on a vacation, a manipulative grandmother insists on visiting an old house she remembers from when she was young. By persisting and hinting, she gets the entire family to turn around to search for the house. From the beginning the grandma has not been tolerable. She argued over going to Tennessee over Florida, she packed her cat into her suitcase knowing it was not allowed, she did not spare the truth when upon realizing the house they were searching for was in fact not in Georgia, where they were, but in Tennessee. This story tells of the adventure of a man name Billy, his family and his elderly mother who began on a road trip to Florida. On the trip, the grandmother convinces her son to take a detour which results in tragedy. My beliefs are the grandma had all good intentions, however, she has an attitude of being selfish, manipulative and deceitful to make things go her way. This is much like a friend I know. Consequently, from a Catholic perspective, when she recognizes him as one of her children, she is acknowledging their participation in the Mystical Body of Christ. However, at the same time, the touching of the Misfit by the Grandmother is an acceptance of the evil by which the Misfit has been treated, "I call myself The Misfit," he say, "because I can't make what all I done wrong fit what all I gone through in punishment" (O'Connor 142). The Grandmother's attitude in the story echoes that of a Protestant, specifically, that of a Puritan. As the story progresses, the Grandmother voices the importance of success in redemption. The Grandmother presents herself as a "lady" who wears "white cotton gloves", "a navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of white violets in the brim" and a matching dress (O'Connor 130). This lady is quite self–centered, manipulative, and proud; she is constantly persuading her family to make them do what she wants. For example, after the Grandmother has convinced them to take the dirt road, and she realizes that the house they are looking for is not in Georgia, but in Tennessee, the Grandmother stays silent to avoid the embarrassment. However, the most distinctive aspect of the Grandmother's personality is her sense of Utopia. She is constantly recoiling better times which she associates with the Old South of Gone with the Wind, "when there were no paved roads" (135), and more importantly, when good men were easy to find. There also traces of what Lipset calls morality plays in the Grandmother; at the beginning of the story, the Grandmother does not want to go to Florida because she "wouldn't take [her] children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it. As soon as we untied the rope the weight of the tire made it fall about 70mph. It made a loud thud on impact and just from the fall made me realize it was gonna be hard to take it back to our place. I told Izzy to open the gate I rushed to the tire and grabbed the rope and pulled it towards the opening in the fence. My step sister was still in the tree when I made my escape with Izzy. I was trying to run with the tire on the rope down the hot road. I was trying to run as fast as I could with the tire on my 6. I was telling Izzy to look out for anyone as a witness but, there wasn't since we lived in a dead neighborhood. While running my step sister came spriting behind me saying the other dog was after her. I looked back and saw the dad weiner dog sprinting toward us. It was cute with it's little leg and long body but it was also terrifying with the foam coming out of its mouth also its grunting was crazy. We began to run from it and with all my might I managed to out run a short stubby weiner dog while carrying a tire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Eulogy For Grandmother Jesse sat cross–legged on the floor in Nana's library with a perplexed frown as she studied the book on her lap. She was only sixteen, but the circumstances of her life had made her wiser than her years. She had been orphaned at the age of two and her grandmother, whom she adored and affectionately called Nana, was the one person in her life she could always count on. Well, that was until just a couple of months ago when Nana had died after a long struggle with cancer. She had been seventy–six, but Jesse had thought of her as the youngest, old person she knew. While living with Nana, she had grown into a lanky teenager with long, straight black hair, usually pulled back into a ponytail, and eyes so piercingly blue that she could make ... She knew it was her grandmother's influence that guided her each day, drove her to excel in college, and helped her make those difficult, life–altering decisions. She had graduated from college with a doctorate in psychology. It had always been her plan to move back home and into her grandmother's house after college. However, she had been offered an incredible opportunity in New York that she just couldn't refuse. She knew her grandmother would be beaming with approval. Funding had been made available for building and organizing a dozen women's shelters in New York. The terms of the anonymous benefactor's offer had been very specific: "The position is only available to an individual qualified to provide professional counseling, who has the necessary skills to supervise construction, and a desire to manage the operation of the shelters once completed." The unspoken, but clearly necessary condition, was that they had to be willing to live in New York, the intended location of all the shelters. As if by divine intervention, a developer had made a very reasonable offer for her grandmother's house and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. After the worms were on the hooks papaw helped me cast the pole out into the vast water. We just sat there waiting, I gazed at the orange and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Papaw," I whisper, "my fishing pole moved." Papaw peered up at me and hollered, "REEL IT IN KAYBUG." Cheerfully, I reeled in the fishing line and there it was the tiny baby sunfish. I don't think the fish was any smaller than an inch worm. But, it was my very first fish. The fish dangled there on the line, the hook in its musty mouth it was almost sad. I didn't reply I just rushed over to him confusingly. Just then I realized the hissing noise was a snake; an ugly scrawny ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Essay on My Grandmother My Grandmother This poem explores the relationship between the speaker and her grandmother. It focuses on the remorse and guilt she felt – and perhaps does still feel – about the way she behaved towards her on one occasion, and can be seen as an attempt to exorcise this. The poem is divided into four parts: the first stanza describes her grandmother working in the shop; the second the incident which causes her guilt; the third stanza shows her in retirement. In the final stanza, after her grandmother has died, the speaker reflects on herself and her grandmother's life. The first stanza sets the scene – the antique shop reflects the character and life of the grandmother. The words 'it kept her' suggest that it seems, to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, beneath the images of polish, silver and brass lies someone who can be 'hurt', who feels though never speaks about how she feels, and who comes to be 'frail'; the poem deals with the speaker's complex response to this realisation. The grandmother's life is bound up with the antiques even after she no longer keeps the shop. They accompany her to the 'long, narrow room' in which she essentially waits to die. This third stanza is full of unattractive images – shadows, the smell of absence, things too long shut up – yet the speaker still has to acknowledge that, to her grandmother, they represent 'all her best things'. This imagery sums up the lfe of a person who has been defined by her antiques – 'the smell of absences' suggests the memories that the grandmother attaches to these objects, but it also hints at an unfulfilled existence, while 'the shadows.../ That can't be polished' suggest the grandmother's loss of her habitual control as she nears death (a state itself often associated with shadow), and are a disturbingly vague image. In the poem's final image, 'the new dust falling through the air', Jennings economically suggests the grandmother's joining of the antiques she devoted her life to. But this image simultaneously reminds us of her absence from the room ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Eulogy For Grandmother It was a wonderful September Sunday morning. I woke up to the smell of delicious chocolate chip pancakes. I jumped outta bed, put on my clothes and rushed to the kitchen. My mom had just finished preparing the chocolate chip pancakes and also had made eggs and bacon. The bacon was slightly crispy just how I like it. I ate my breakfast and asked my mom what we would do that day. She thought for a while and meandered over what we should do. In my mind I already knew what I wanted to do and that was go to the farm and do stuff out there. I told her what I wanted to do and she said that it sounded like a plan. After I concluded that everything I looked over was ok I walked to the barn and asked my uncle what I should do. He said I should haul manure. I thought that instead of hauling out of the big lots with the skid steer and the big manure spreader that I would get the small spreader out and manually scoop this room out with a pitchfork. It manure was very hard because the manure had been in there for about 5 years and it was very high. I got the door was cleaned out and I was very tired the spreader was about ⅔ full and I decided to stop and take a break. Maybe 5 minutes later I started again, going at it really fast and I was not paying much attention. Then after almost 5 minutes of scooping it happened. I was walking up a slippery incline and at the same time trying to scoop some from the top of the pile. I slipped and when I slipped my foot positioned itself right under one of the tines on the pitchfork. I could not stop it the pitchfork penetrated my boot. I thought it had just gone through my boot but I was terribly wrong. I took my boot off and there was blood all over my sock. I then glanced over to the pitchfork it was laying there with the tiniest bit of blood on one of the forks. • 36. Grandmother Lessons Daniel Vunyagane. Tasha Haas English 101. 07/03/15 Lessons with Grandma Sarah My grandmother, Sarah, is probably the most knowledgeable person I have known since my childhood. Whenever our schoolteacher asked us to learn about our heritage, I would call over the phone so that she could explain things I wanted to know. It was a good way of keeping in touch with her at the moment. However, with time, the need to learn about my heritage or other things that required her explanation declined, and we lost touch for a long time. Owing to our busy schedule, we would only go to visit her on major holidays such as Thanksgiving Day, where all members of the family dedicated their time to celebrate with each other. She was jubilant and would talk throughout the recording process, which also made that moment memorable since her voice overrode all others. When it was all done, everybody wanted a copy of it because it was hilarious having her voice in the background throughout the video. Seeing how happy she was to have learnt something new, I decided to stay longer and teach her several things including connecting via Skype. She was thrilled to get to communicate with her children and grandchildren on Skype from my laptop.
