the main component of civil engineering is concrete and this presentation is based on the different types of concrete used in civil engineering that will help students
3. normal concrete
⢠The concrete in which common ingredients i.e
aggregates, water, cement are used is known as
normal concrete.
⢠It is also called normal weight concrete or normal
strength concrete..
4. Importance of normal concrete
⢠Normal concrete has the following important
properties
⢠It has a setting time of 30-90 minutes.
⢠The development of the strength starts after 7 days
the common strength values is 1450psi to 5800psi. At
about 28 days 75-80% of the total strength is attained.
⢠Almost at 90 days 95% of the strength is achieved.
5. Properties of normal concrete
⢠Its slump varies from 1-4 inches.
⢠Density ranges from 140-175pcf.
⢠It is strong in compression.
⢠Air content 1-2%
⢠Normal concrete is not durable against serve
conditions e.g freezing and thawing.
7. Definition
⢠High performance concrete is a concrete mixture
which posses one or more of the cementious material
such as fly ash , silica fume etc. And usually a super
plasticizer .This concrete posses high durability and
high strength when compared to conventional
concrete.
8. Properties of HPC
ďąThis mix has the following main properties
⢠High strength
⢠High workability
⢠Ease of placement
⢠Early age strength
⢠Permeability
⢠Density
⢠Heat of hydration
⢠Long life in serve environment
9. preparation
⢠High strength concrete mix can be prepared with careful selection of
ingredients and optimization of mix design.
⢠HIGH WORKABILITY: High workability is attained by super
plasticizers, they lower the water cement ratio to 0.25
⢠. HIGH DURABILITY: High durability is attributed to fly ash and silica
fume which modify the properties of concrete. Fly ash also causes an
increase in workability.
⢠The admixtures are usually durable against freezing and thawing so air
entrained agents can also be utilized.
⢠The admixtures are 20-25% fly ash of partial replacement of cement
10. ADVANTAGES of high performance concrete mix
⢠Strength of high performance concrete mix ranges from
10000psi â 15000psi.
⢠Water cement ratio can be reduced to 0.25.
⢠Increase durability against chloride attack.
⢠Higher seismic resistance.
⢠Most economical materials in terms of time and money.
11. limitation
⢠High performance concrete has to manufactured and placed
much more carefully than normal concrete .
⢠An extended quality control is required.
⢠In concrete plant and at delivery site , additional tests are
required.
13. Water permeability test of concrete
⢠Cast 3 specimen of concrete each of 200mm dia and 120mm height.
⢠After 24 hours, the middle portion of 100mm dia is roughened and
the remaining portion is sealed with cement paste.
⢠The specimen are cured for 28days then water pressure is applied on
the middle roughened portion so that water can penetrate inside the
concrete.
⢠After this, the specimen are split in compression machine by applying
load.
⢠The average of three maximum values of penetration is calculated.
14. Result
⢠The depth of penetration of water should not be more
than 25mm otherwise the specimen are considered to
be failed in permeability test and the concrete is said
to be less durable.
